Rob Lowe doesn't want to get serious. Demi Moore doesn't want to get used. Together, they're an unforgettable couple in the sexy, contemporary comedy, ABOUT LAST NIGHT…After drinks at a favorite Chicago hang-out, Danny Martin (Lowe) and Debbie Sullivan (Moore) head to Danny's place to indulge in the predictable single's quest: the one-night stand. Their affair is casual, sensual, and supposedly over until something surprising happens. They want to see each other again. It's the start of an intense relationship that irritates Danny's rowdy best friend (James Belushi) and astounds Debbie's cynical buddy/roomie (Elizabeth Perkins), who do everything possible to break them up. But, Danny and Debbie wind up living together and amidst the daily drudge of domestic life, they begin to realize that making love is easy, saying I love you is more difficult, and being in love the hardest of all. Based on David Mamet's Obie Award-winning play, Sexual Perversity in Chicago, ABOUT LAST NIGHT… is an insightful, provocative and often funny look at romance in the '80s.

The Dumbest Arguments about Gun Control

People routinely have different priorities and different information, so it is no surprise we also have different opinions on what to do about gun violence in this country. As a public service, I will separate out the good arguments from the dumb ones. Reasonable people who have different priorities can still debate the stronger arguments, so there’s no point in anyone wasting time on dumb arguments. I’ll show you the dumbest arguments on both sides. Maybe we can collectively stop using them.

Look how optimistic I am!

Other Countries Argument

The Other Countries argument suggests that because tight gun control works in other countries, we should expect it would work in the United States. That is an irrational argument because the United States is different from every other country in more ways than I can list. At most, the Other Countries argument suggests gun control isn’t guaranteed to be a disaster. But that is different from saying it is likely such laws would turn out well in the United States. We simply can’t know that the experience of other countries would translate to our situation.

Nor does it matter.

The Americans who want to maintain gun rights to protect against potential tyranny from our own government are specifically worried about future events. We can’t look at the history of Denmark (for example) to know anything about the future of the United States. Nor would it matter if we could somehow magically calculate the risk of tyranny springing up in Denmark versus it happening in the United States, because any risk above zero would be enough to justify gun ownership.

The more rational approach than looking at other countries would involve trying some changes in the law in a few states or cities in this country and tracking how much difference it makes compared to states or cities that are comparable.

No match for a standing army

Gun control advocates often like to point out that private gun owners in this country would never be a match for a standing army, should we ever get to the point of some sort of dictator situation in which the military is turned on the public. But that isn’t the right question. The right question is whether the guns in this country would be sufficient to handle assassinations, kidnapping of family members of both the military and the rogue government, and economic disruption in general. For those tasks, citizens are already sufficiently armed.

Slippery slope

Slippery slope arguments are magical thinking. Everything in this world changes until it has a reason to stop. There is nothing special about being “on a slippery slope.” It is an empty idea. Society regulates all manner of products and activities, but we don’t worry about those other regulations becoming a slippery slope. We observe that change stops when the majority (or vocal minority) decide enough is enough. To put it another way, mowing the lawn does not lead to shaving your dog.

It’s in the Constitution

Gun advocates like to remind us that gun ownership is a protected right that is in the Constitution, end of story. But that ignores the fact that the Constitution was written to be updated. The process for changing the Constitution is well understood, and difficult by design, so it doesn’t happen often. But we can change the Constitution, and in the past we have. “It’s a Constitutional right” is a meaningless thing to say because we voters decide what is in and out of the Constitution. On top of that, we can, and do, create laws that constrict gun ownership all the time. Apparently the Supreme Court agrees that’s allowed.

The Constitution refers to militias, not ordinary gun ownership

I’m no Constitutional scholar, but in all likelihood neither are you. But I do know it doesn’t matter how you and I interpret the Constitution, because the Supreme Court apparently thinks private gun ownership is a right, and that doesn’t look likely to change any time soon. While I understand how people can be on both sides of the militia interpretation, I reserve the right to not listen to your blabber until you are on the Supreme Court. My opinion on what is or is not Constitutional doesn’t count. Neither does yours. So let’s take this argument off the table because we are not on the Supreme Court.

People will just use other tools to kill

This argument assumes adding friction to a process had no impact. But in the real world, adding friction to just about anything changes behavior. Extra friction might not eliminate a behavior you want to curtail, but it generally has an impact. As evidence of my point, we don’t see fully automatic weapons being used in mass shootings despite the fact they would be the best weapon for the job. They don’t overheat, for example. You can buy a fully automatic weapon in the United States, but they are super expensive and raise some flags in the system if you try. That bit of friction (price and visibility) made them effectively disappear from crime scenes. Friction works.

Friction almost always changes behavior. We’d need to do some testing to see how any particular gun law changes the variables in play, but most of human experience suggests friction — of any kind — will change behavior a bit. It is rational to say we don’t know how much impact any particular law will have. It is not rational to say we shouldn’t test some changes locally and see what happens.

Criminals can always get guns

Criminals can always get guns if they try hard enough. But I’m more concerned about the 18-year old who has no criminal record but does have some mental illness. That kid is not as resourceful as career criminals. If that kid can’t get a firearm through the normal and legal process, the friction can be enough to reduce the odds of getting one illegally.

Gun deaths are not that high

About half of gun deaths are suicides. Lots of other gun deaths involve criminals shooting each other. If you subtract out those deaths, the number of gun deaths is low compared to other risks we routinely accept, such as the risk of auto accidents, overeating, sports, etc. If the current amount of gun violence seems worth the price to you, that would be a rational point of view. But it would not be rational to avoid testing some methods to reduce gun violence even further. Americans don’t stop trying to fix a problem just because only 10,000 people per year are dying from it. That’s still a lot. And if we can test new approaches in one city or state, why not?

I might update the list of bad arguments as I see new ones.

Update:

You are ignoring the lives saved by guns

No, I’m not. I’m looking at the net deaths by guns, which is what matters. If a new law improves the net death rate, that’s good enough, unless it causes some other problem.

Testing in one state won’t work because people can just drive across the border to get guns

We might also need to restrict in-person gun purchases to residents of the state. That’s a simple Federal change, for example.

But even without that limitation, we can often tell where guns came from, at least for perps who are caught. We would soon know if the state line issue made all the difference, some difference, or no difference in gun deaths. Because all friction works (to some degree), one would expect that making people drive to another state changes behavior. We would also expect to see the least reduction in gun deaths from residents who live nearest other state borders. This is all testable and measurable.

Chicago has tight gun laws and also high gun violence

The intended point is that tighter gun restrictions do not reduce gun violence, because it isn’t working in Chicago. But the point ignores the obvious, that the places with the worst gun violence are likely to pass the strictest gun laws in response. We should expect that most if not all the places with the most gun laws violence have the most restrictive gun laws, or will soon.

The Chicago example also ignores the fact we have no way of knowing how much more gun violence would have occurred without the current laws in place.

Starbucks In Philly Under Fire For Islamophobic Name Jab At Muslim Man, Lied About Apologizing

racism-Starbucks-US-POLITICS-RACISM-EDUCATION-STARBUCKS

Source: KENA BETANCUR / Getty

Once again, a Starbucks in Philadelphia is under fire for making another racist inference according to the claims of a patron who says staff in the store took a swipe at his name. Niquel Johnson, a 40-year-old Muslim man who goes by the name Aziz, says an employee at Starbucks wrote “ISIS” as his name and he adds that they also lied about speaking with his niece to issue an apology.

The Washington Post exclusively reports:

Niquel Johnson paid for three drinks in Philadelphia on Sunday, and in typical Starbucks fashion, an employee asked for his name. Johnson, 40, told them “Aziz,” his Islamic name pronounced ah-zeez. He has used it for 25 years — and “countless” times at that particular store.

But three unusual things happened on this occasion, he said. When his order was ready, a staffer announced them by drink type, not his name.

The second unusual part was the employee wrote his name as “ISIS” — the acronym for the Islamic terror group — in the printout attached to all three drinks.

Johnson didn’t even realize it until later, when a friend pointed it out at a bookstore.

“I was shocked and angry. I felt it was discrimination,” Johnson told The Washington Post on Friday.

The outlet writes that Starbucks claimed they spoke with Johnson’s niece and settled the matter. The kicker is that Johnson says whoever the company claims they spoke with, a woman named Alora, isn’t someone known to him in his life.

Johnson is considering legal action.

There’s no way to deny it, Kanye West grabbed the mic and wrecked Taylor Swift’s VMA’s back in 2009. The Pop singer recently shared her diary entry about that incident.

Page Six reports that a reprint of her diaries is included in the deluxe edition of her new Lover album, so of course that page has made it onto the Internets.

“Let’s just say, if you had told me Kanye West would have been the number one focus of my week, the media, and my part in the VMA’s I would’ve looked at you crossed-eyed,” reads part of the entry from September 18, 2009, five days after Yeezy grabbed the mic and said Beyonce should have gotten the Female Video of the Year award.

She added, “If you had told me that one of the biggest stars in music was going to jump up onstage and announce that he thought I shouldn’t have won on live television, I would’ve said ‘That stuff doesn’t really happen in real life…,”

7 Stylish and Sustainable Clothing Brands You Can Feel Good About Wearing

Great style shouldn’t come at the cost of sacrificing your ethical and sustainable values. The global clothing and footwear industries account for about 8 percent of the world´s greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2018 study from Quantis, a group that studies sustainability. Of course, you don’t want to contribute to that number by buying a closet filled with short-lived, eco-depleting, fast fashion. On the other hand, that stained T-shirt and crusty flip-flops from summers past aren’t doing you any favors.

Three Sustainable Clothing Companies That Are (Figuratively) Killing It

Thankfully, updating your closet and maintaining your consciousness is as easy as supporting companies that do good. These seven sustainable brands with out-of-the-box social, environmental, and ethical responsibility initiatives can elevate your style.

OluKai

Summer footwear can seem like an afterthought if you’re used to wearing a pair of forgettable flip-flops. But when you slide on a pair of OluKai slip-ons or sandals, not only will your feet get the support they need on the boat or beach, but your purchase will actually contribute toward the brand’s impressive social-responsibility mission. The California-based casual footwear brand inspired by Hawaii is a Certified B Corporation, which means it balances profitability with purpose and meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance and transparency. It even has its own Ama OluKai Foundation. Their foundation funds nine organizations with aims of restoring traditional Hawaiian culture and encouraging new growth with nonprofits for everything from at-risk youth, local arts organizations, traditional Polynesian sailing, and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association. This classic ʻOhana sandal pictured has custom artwork laser-etched on the footbed by Hawaiʻi artist Matthew Tapia.

Patagonia

The OG of sustainability and responsibility isn’t one to rest on its proverbial laurels. When it’s not suing the government to protect national parks, the Certified B Corp—which donated its $ 10 million tax refund to environmental groups this year—is consistently challenging the norm, protecting the environment, and creating innovative products. Their new Hot Weather Naturals Hemp Blends collection is the latest example. The Fair Trade Certified pieces are made with organic cotton, Tencel, and hemp (commercial hemp growing has been federally prohibited for almost 50 years in the U.S.). The result? A light, breathable, durable collection of shirts and shorts. The Trail Harbor Polo will keep you feeling dry and looking cool.

Outerknown

Plastic bottles and single-use packaging aren’t the only things hurting the environment. Tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics, like polyester swim trunks, enter our waterways each time they’re washed or worn in water—eventually to be consumed by sea life and later ingested by you. Outerknown, founded by pro surfer Kelly Slater (already known for making clothing from recycled fishing nets), has a new line of Australian merino wool trunks called Woolaroo that leave no trace. Before you imagine a thick, soggy sweater soaking up water, know that they’re woven with special technology to make them quick-drying, water-wicking, odor-resistant, and fully biodegradable. Bonus: They’re as easy on the eyes as they are on the environment.

SOLO Eyewear

You’ll feel better sliding on these stylish sunnies that not only protect your eyes but also help restore vision to those in need: SOLO Eyewear donates 10 percent of its profits. The San Diego-based brand has helped more than 15,000 people in 32 countries see better by funding eye exams, eyeglasses, and cataract surgeries. The sunglasses are also eco-friendly, made from repurposed bamboo and recycled plastic, which has saved hundreds of pounds of new plastic from being produced each year. Even the sunglass cases and cords are thoughtful: They’re made by a group of female artisans in Panajachel, Guatemala. If that’s not enough, the startup also repurposes packing materials and defective sunglasses for parts.

[$ 89, Guyana; soloeyewear.com]

United By Blue

More than one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. And every year around the world, 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used. In addition to using organic and recycled fabrics, United By Blue takes their commitment to the environment further by organizing cleanups aimed at plastic pollution. Last year, it hosted 45 trash removal events in 21 states, removing more than 500,000 pounds of trash. But that’s just the tip of the pile. The Philadelphia-based company cleans up a pound of trash for every product sold—and currently it’s at 1,756,888 pounds. They don’t sacrifice style for substance, and these chambray shorts made from organic cotton and a blend of new and recycled hemp are proof.

[$ 62, Selby Short; unitedbyblue.com]

JCRT

Clothes headed to a landfill aren’t the only kind of waste that comes from fabric production. Aside from scraps of fabric left behind on the factory floor, the process requires significant amounts of energy and water. Not so with JCRT, makers of hand-crafted, limited-edition plaid shirts. The brand partners with Resonance’s Factory, which handles everything in its Dominican Republic space, rather than the usual method of sending pieces across the globe for completion. In addition to cutting back on environmentally unfriendly transportation, the factory’s advanced and very precise printing technology uses about two-thirds less material per garment, limiting damaging dye and water usage. Order online and your piece, like this cotton twill shirt, will be made on demand and shipped directly to you.

[$ 95, The Wrinkle In Time Short Sleeve Shirt; jc-rt.com]

Tact & Stone

The amount of water it takes to create a single cotton T-shirt is pretty shocking—around 650–700 gallons. If you’re a number-driven kind of guy, you’ll appreciate Tact & Stone, an LA-based brand that launched in February 2019. They aim for all-around sustainability, with a modern collection that’s not only stylish but transparent (they share the names of the ethical factories they work with); low-impact (they use organic, recycled, and upcycled materials); and forward-thinking (they engineer garments for a second and third life). A Tact & Stone upcycled pocket T-shirt saves 538 gallons of water, and their French terry hoodie saves a whopping 1,197 gallons. And similar to the circular economy concept used by Taylor Stitch, Patagonia, REI, and The North Face, once you’re done with a Tact & Stone piece, send it back for upcycling and you’ll get a discount on your next purchase.

Social Media Has a Lot to Say About Nars’ Phallic Lipstick Campaign

Nars is taking risqué marketing to the next level.
The 25-year-old beauty company, best known for its Orgasm blush — among other shade names that are sexual innuendos — has social media abuzz over its newest campaign.
Nars posted the raunchy video — which shows a nude lipstick melting into the phallic shape — to its Instagram account with the caption: “When the nudes keep you up all night.” Social media was quick to react, with many expressing their shock at the campaign. Model Chrissy Teigen, for one, poked fun at the campaign on her Twitter account.

honestly in love with this color and now I must have it to soften my boner
— christine teigen (@chrissyteigen) August 12, 2019

“The View” cohost Meghan McCain for another, responded to the video campaign, claiming the brand’s blush is her favorite to use.

It’s my favorite blush 😕
— Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) August 12, 2019

Beauty influencers, including Nicolette Mason and Manny Gutierrez, have also reacted to the campaign, praising the brand for its unique marketing.

Francois Nars is our sex positive makeup king!!!!
— nicolette mason (@nicolettemason) August 12, 2019

Honestly I live for NARS branding lol ❤️ #orgasm

What You Need to Know About Scott Eastwood’s New Made Here Collection

Scott Eastwood is stepping into some new territory. After starring in big films like Pacific Rim: Uprising and The Fate of the Furious over the last couple years, the actor is launching a new style collection, Made Here, which will have products that are inspired by the American worker.

Cover Story: Scott Eastwood on ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ and Living an Adventurous Life

So what exactly is Made Here about? While you’ll have to wait to see, the upcoming new line will include shirts, boxers, socks, hats and other accessories for both men and women. The idea behind the brand is that everything will be made in the United States and also will “celebrate the American worker” through its designs. Eastwood has partnered with entrepreneur Dane Chapin for the new collection.

“For hundreds of years, ‘American-made’ has been synonymous with high quality,” said Eastwood in a press release. “It’s all the hard-working folks across the country that make our brand possible. I want to honor the iconic heritage of American manufacturing and let people know it’s very much alive and well. The essence of Made Here is really very simple: it’s to celebrate the excellence of the American worker.”

While Eastwood has been hard at work on launching Made Here, he hasn’t slowed down in his acting career. Eastwood has multiple projects coming up, including the Afghanistan war drama The Outpost with Orlando Bloom, and the crime thriller The Manuscript, where he’ll star alongside Oscar winner Jamie Foxx for director Nick Cassavettes.

Scott Eastwood on Flying Helicopters and His Favorite Adventures in the United States

While you wait for the Made Here launch, you can read up on Eastwood’s previous cover story, where he told us about the time he took a road trip through the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, the time he almost crashed in a helicopter on a snowboarding trip in the Canadian Rockies, and the time he was held down by a massive wave in Australia. Yeah, Eastwood knows how to have an adventure.

The collection is set to launch in August 2019 and customers can get a head start by signing up on the Made Here website to get 10-percent off on launch day. See more at the Made Here site.

The Interview That Crossed The Line — And What I Still Believe About Vulnerability

At the 2014 Grammys, I performed “Same Love” alongside Madonna, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Queen Latifah while 33 couples were married on live television. And then I floated to the planet Orkjar on a golden pop-tart, because in what universe does a chubby lesbian get to be a red sparkling princess lady that sings about gay love? I cried for hours in the rehearsal, overwhelmed by the implications of what we were about to do.

465369213

The day after that surreal performance, I felt electric. I was in the middle of recording my first full-length album, and was scheduled to appear on a live celebrity talk show to promote my single. It was one of those shows where they recap vapid useless celebrity gossip, so naturally I couldn’t wait to dish on the moment when I pulled up to the glitzy after-party in a dirty red minivan with my parents, or when my girlfriend and I danced with a tipsy Anna Kendrick, or that my mom continued to insist that Skrillex was the nicest boy she’d ever met, and we ought to “sing a duet.” Unfortunately, this interview on this TV show was nothing like that. This interview pulled the golden pop-tart rug out from underneath me.

The morning-after interview started the way most interviews do: “How was working with Macklemore? Did you know Madonna was going to come out on stage? Do you shit cupcakes?” For some reason, the interview took a strange turn. Perhaps it was the interviewer’s hunger to be taken more seriously, to have a compelling story, to catch tears falling on the couch a la Barbara Walters. But whatever the reason, I was asked without relevance or warning about my childhood abuse, as well as being raped in an army barracks as a teenager. Any hopes of giggling about Skrillex evaporated quickly. I was aware that the information of my sexual abuse was out in the world, but that morning, when I was putting the final touches on my makeup, my sexual traumas hadn’t crossed my mind once. Why would they? I tried to respond as best I could, knowing that it was live television, but everything afterward was a blur. As soon as the cameras were off, I went into a full-blown panic attack. I didn’t know it then, but this same situation would happen multiple times in the year.

I questioned so much after that interview. Have I done this to myself? Is this what happens when you are vulnerable and open? How do I take back control of the telling of my own story? I started noticing weird shit after that interview — the disassociation we create between us and celebrity. How much I craved honest connection, and how I realized I was only receiving a strange form of being collected. I started realizing my own fascination with celebrity culture. Started wondering why people hate the Kardashians so vehemently — or, on the other side of the coin, adore them and obsess over their facial structures. It dawned on me — people have misdirected anger at the Kardashians or celebrities who have a disproportionate ratio of fame to talent. They don’t actually hate Kim Kardashian. They are upset with the culture that fetishizes them — where media prioritizes and praises ratings rather than substance. The Kardashians are simply opportunists. I began fearing the heavy societal commodification of celebrity culture, and was deeply saddened with the realization that music consumption is only vaguely a part of the equation for successful artists.

I wrote “Ribcage” because I was exhausted. I wrote it because my truth was hungover and needed a sarcastic joke. I wrote it because “Secrets” was an optimistic version of vulnerability, and because self-empowerment doesn’t always come wrapped in a bow.

I will continue to talk about my own sexual trauma when I feel safe enough to, and when I’m in control. I still believe in the power of vulnerability — that openness is the key to empathy, and that empathy is the key to human connection.

Nataly recounts her story, flashing back to Paula helping her to find a new path in life. The girls are getting ready for an evening out, but Nataly is nervous. Paula calms her by kissing her gently. In Iowa, Hillary Shows She’s Learned Something About Running While Female

This post originally appeared on The Cut.
By Rebecca Traister

For all those Democrats who fretted for the past year about the probability of a listless primary, and for any who (inanely) predicted a “coronation” for Hillary Clinton (I mean, just as a point of fact, in the U.S. we don’t hand out president crowns, and especially not to women), Monday night put every fear to rest. Democrats could not have asked for a more riveting nail-biter. As of this writing, it’s still not clear whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton “won,” and I gather, after eleventy hours of listening to polling analysis, that it may not be clear for another eleventy hours.

That’s pretty thrilling. Democrats have two candidates about whom voters feel passionate. The win/tie is tremendous for Sanders, the long-shot challenger from the left. But it’s also pretty great for Clinton, who could have decisively lost Iowa but hung on, and who also became the first Clinton (and the first woman ever) not to have outright lost the state.

Clinton’s approach tonight — her ballsy power-play move of stepping over Republican winner Ted Cruz’s victory speech, and her happy-warrior tone — showed a marked contrast from her 2008 loss in Iowa, a night when she came in nine points behind Barack Obama and one point behind John Edwards. Back then, her concession was dismal, wan, practically consumptive. Eight years later, she was energetic, brassy, and seemed to show she’s learning something about navigating the choppy waters of running for president while female.

The key thing she did in her “sigh of relief” speech on Monday was right her flailing message about health-care reform, which in recent days had gone off the rails for her in a very familiar way.

She was firm and positive in her framing of her goal: “I know that we can finish the job of universal health-care coverage for every man, woman, and child!” she shouted affirmatively and warmly, in sharp contrast to the sharper tone she’d deployed in recent days, culminating in a YouTube clip that was swiftly dubbed by her critics “Hillary’s Mean Scream.” In it, Clinton had bellowed about how “people who have health emergencies can’t wait for us to have some theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass!”

Clinton, who has in one way or another spent decades of her career pushing for universal health-care reform, was expressing her obvious lack of patience for a candidate whose idea of starting from scratch, rather than building on the reforms of the flawed but hard-won Affordable Care Act, strikes her as pie-in-the-sky.

But in failing to present an upbeat take on her disagreement with Sanders, Clinton had sounded like a scold, the disciplinarian, the mean mommy, the pragmatic downer — all versions of a feminized role that she and many, many women have long found it incredibly difficult to escape.

Recall the days following the 2008 Iowa caucus, when the media took advantage of Clinton’s defeat to let loose with their resentment and animosity toward her. That was when conservative Marc Rudov told Fox News that Clinton lost because “When Barack Obama speaks, men hear ‘Take off for the future!’ When Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear ‘Take out the garbage!'” It was in the days after Iowa that Clinton infamously got asked about how voters believed her to be “the most experienced and the most electable” candidate but “are hesitating on the likability issue.” In late January, columnist Mike Barnicle told a laughing all-male panel on Morning Joe that Clinton’s challenge was that she looks “like everyone’s first wife standing outside of probate court.”

What was true in ’08 remains true this year. From her entrance into the campaign, Clinton has been tagged as unlikable, as the practical buzzkill, the boring one with the wonky facts and figures and experience who’s going to show up and tell you that your big plans are impossible, but that she’s thought of some smaller and more doable fixes. Meanwhile, Sanders, who entered the race shouting righteously and correctly about a system that’s broken, has, as his campaign has strengthened, become the unlikely vehicle of idealistic hopes and dreams for America — Free college! Free health care! A $ 15 minimum wage! The breakup of the big banks!

His vision of revolution, as Bryce Covert wrote in Monday’s New York Times, differs significantly from Clinton’s approach, which Covert described accurately as “pragmatism incarnate.” Critics argue that his promises have no chance of coming to fruition, but their soaring scale — and the righteous ideals to which they speak — make him a candidate it is infinitely easier to feel emotionally inspired by. Clinton’s realism may in fact be one of the reasons that her supporters believe that she’d make a more prepared and effective commander-in-chief than Sanders — something that in fact provokes rational excitement, especially by those thrilled at the idea of an experienced, capable, hard-assed Democratic woman president. But hers is not an easy pose to pull off, if you’re trying to win the hearts of America. In fact, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported tonight that many young voters in Iowa had told her that their decision between Clinton and Sanders had come down to head versus heart, respectively.

That hurts, and it falls into a very old, very well-worn gendered pattern, in which women — understanding that making promises they cannot back up will not get them taken seriously and that they must prove themselves extra-competent in order to be understood as basically competent — become the nose-to-the-grindstone wonks, easily compared to know-it-all bores like Tracy Flick and Hermione Granger. They’re the wet blankets, the ones all too acquainted with the limitations imposed by the world, and all too eager to explain their various ideas for working around them. Men, and especially white men, whose claims to public or political power are more easily understood, are permitted a slightly looser approach.

There’s been some talk about how a female candidate could never be as scruffy as Bernie Sanders, as uncombed and unkempt. A woman could never be as grumpy as Bernie, as left-leaning as Bernie, as uncooperative with party machinery as Bernie. And that stuff is true enough. But the bigger truth is that what Bernie does, to great acclaim, that Hillary Clinton could never do is make big promises of institutional overthrow, tug on our imaginative heartstrings by laying out a future that might not be grounded in reality, and urge a revolution.

Here is a truth about America: No one likes a woman who yells loudly about revolution.

And no, it’s not just this woman. This is a paradigm; it’s why Mom is the disciplinarian and Dad is the fun guy, why women remain the brains and organizational workhorses behind social movements while men get to be the gut-ripping orators, why so many women still manage campaigns and so many men are still candidates.

So here we are! On our way to New Hampshire, a state that inspiring Bernie Sanders is overwhelmingly favored to win. But for one of the first times, in her speech in Iowa, I saw Clinton work effectively to turn the pragmatic ship around, to take what she wants to say — that Sanders’s soaring promises are empty but her more modest proposals might come to pass — and make it sound almost exciting.

What People Wish They Knew About Divorce after Decades Together

When we plan our wedding, when we stand on the alter and say “I do,” and perhaps for many years after, we can’t imagine our life without our chosen partner. While some people only have a short time together before they divorce, there are the couples who have decades together before they decide that divorce is the only option.

This may be after numerous attempts at couple’s therapy, many years of a strained relationship, or even comes as a complete blindside to one of the partners. While this process may be exceptionally confusing and painful, there are some facts that many people wish they knew while going through the process and in the time after the divorce. These are the things that people wish they knew before, or while going through the process, that would have made the experience easier than it was. These tidbits would have made many realize that things were not as dire and permanent as they may have felt.

What are some of these things? You may not be able to live in the same place that you have lived for years, and you may need to adjust your standard of living. This may sound awful, but it does not have to be. When we think back at what we were able to live on, and the contentment we experienced with much less than we have now, we are able to realize that the adjustment may not be as bad as we imagine.

This is actually the opportunity for an exciting new start for you. Who wants to roam around that big house anyway? The kids are grown and have homes of their own, it is too much space, and far too much upkeep. Get a cute place, in a great area, that is simple to take care of. Did the two of you have a relationship where one spouse worked and one spouse helped raise the kids and take care of the house? Now is your time to shine and do all those things that you dreamed of doing. Volunteer, take some classes, work part-time, your options are endless and exhilarating.

Do you fear that you are going to spend the rest of your life alone, and never find love again? Think again! Unfortunately, at least 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. That leaves a lot of options and lonely people looking to meet a new match. While the idea of dating may be nerve wracking at first, it can be thrilling if you give it a chance. Are there great qualities about you that your partner always took for granted?

Perhaps there is someone out there looking for someone with those exact qualities. Maybe there is someone out there who treats you in a way that you never knew was possible. Of course you need to take the time to heal and be ready for a new romance or dating, but once you are, the possibilities are endless. This is your chance to date and do all those things you never got a chance to do in your previous relationship. Your ex hated to dance? Take some ballroom dancing lessons with your new potential suitor. Did your ex prefer to stay at home, now is your chance to see the world with a willing and excited partner.

The bottom line is that life does not end just because your relationship did. Things could not have been ideal if they ended in divorce, and there were likely numerous things that did not make you happy. While it may take some time, healing, and getting to know who you are as the individual you are now, this truly can be a fresh start and a reinvention of self.

You now have the chance to explore all the things you always wanted to do, but were not supported in doing. You have a chance to explore, learn, and put your unique mark on the world. When you are ready, you have a chance to meet someone who appreciates you for the unique person you are, and who has goals and interests in line with yours. Life is far from over, in fact some would argue it can just begin. Do not drop anchor, do not allow yourself to feel that things are hopeless when you divorce after decades, because there are many years and many adventures ahead if you are open to them.

A Woman Says She Believes Her Ex Molested Their Daughter; Why Dr. Phil Has Questions About Her Claims

“I believe that Dan sexually molested our daughter,” says Gina about her ex-husband. “When Alexis was 2 ½, out of the blue Alexis told me that her dad gave her “owies [in her private parts].”

Gina says she confronted Dan about it 16 years ago, and he denied then, and continues to absolutely deny, the accusations, but she says she believed her daughter. “She would say that Daddy touched her with a scissors, or she would say that Daddy touched her with a knife,” Gina claims. “I watched Alexis’ behaviors totally just change. She started becoming withdrawn. She had nightmares, she was wetting the bed.”

Gina claims she went to the police but says, “There was no physical evidence, so they said it was his word against hers.”

Dan is adamant that he has never molested his daughter and claims that Gina unleashed a campaign to destroy him after he broke up with her. “She wasn’t letting me see my kids, so I took her to court. That’s when she said, ‘Oh, by the way, he’s molesting his daughter,’” Dan says. “To hear those words come out of her mouth when everyone’s looking at you, it makes you want to crawl underneath a rock and just die. She decided she would use the kids as pawns to hurt me. The accusations completely destroyed my relationship with my daughter.”

Dan continues, “I waited for the last 15 years to clear my name, a chance to let my daughter know that I’m not the monster her mother has portrayed me to be, a chance to start healing our relationship and be in her life.”

“Did you or did you not molest your daughter?” Dr. Phil asks Dan in the video above.

“One hundred percent did not,” Dan replies.

After reviewing a timeline of events from back then, Dr. Phil asks Gina why she would willingly have her daughter spend time with a man she claimed molested their child, after she had first made the allegations. “As a mother, believing that this man molested your daughter, you consciously and knowingly continued to deliver her into his hands for four months,” he says. “You are the first mother, first, in 45 years, that has ever said, ‘My daughter is being molested by a man, and I’m going to deliver her into his hands for four more months,’ knowing what he is doing to her. In 45 years, this is a first for me. You are the first.”

“I didn’t want to believe it,” Gina says.

On Tuesday’s episode of Dr. Phil, see what happens when Dan takes a polygraph. Will it help clear his name? And, find out what happens after the show, when Gina asks to take a polygraph. Check here to see where you can watch.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Opens Up About His Battle With Depression

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently shared some inspiring words to encourage others battling with depression.

“I found that, with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you’re not alone,” Johnson said on the OWN network’s “Oprah’s Master Class” series. “You’re not the first to go through it; you’re not going to be the last to go through it … I wish I had someone at that time who could just pull me aside and [say], ‘Hey, it’s gonna be OK. It’ll be OK.'”

“Hold on to that fundamental quality of faith,” the 43-year-old movie star said. “Have faith that on the other side of your pain is something good.”

According to OWN, Johnson struggled with depression in his early 20s as his football career began to flounder.

After graduating from the University of Miami, where he played for the football team, Johnson was passed over by the NFL. He was cut from the Calgary Stampeders, a Canadian Football League team, after just two months on the practice roster.

Then 23 and living with his parents in a small apartment, Johnson said he hit a real low point.

“You just feel like you’re alone. You feel like it’s only you. You’re in your bubble.”

It was only after deciding to quit football for good that Johnson said he began building a new life for himself as a professional wrestler.

With the help of his dad, a pro wrestler himself, Johnson would go on to become the WWE superstar known as “The Rock.”

“It wound up being one of the greatest chapters in my life,” he said.

In a series of intimate monologues released by OWN, Johnson has revealed much about his personal life.

In another “Master Class” clip, the wrestler-turned-actor described how at the age of 15, he saved his mother’s life. He also opened up about his relationship with his daughter, and about the philosophy behind his persona as “The Rock.”

Johnson’s full ”Oprah’s Master Class” interview aired Sunday on OWN.

The Truth About Moving On From Your Ex After Divorce

Some people find the process of moving on after divorce surprisingly uncomplicated. (You know, the kind of folks who say they had moved on from their ex long before their marriage was legally over.) For others, closure is a lot harder to come by.

The good news? Your brain may be hardwired to help you move on. According to a study published earlier this year in the journal Review of General Psychology, humans may be built to experience the pain of a split and move on to a new partner.

Even so, getting through those first initial months and even years after divorce isn’t going to be easy. To help you out, we asked relationship experts and HuffPost Divorce readers for their best advice on moving forward after divorce. Read their tried-and-true tips below.

1. Understand that there’s no timeframe for recovering from divorce — and that’s OK.

There will be days when you feel amazing and glad to be free of your ex — and days when getting out of bed seems like more trouble than it’s worth. As divorce coach Kira Gould discovered firsthand, divorce recovery is not a linear process.

“There were times in the beginning of my divorce when I knew in my soul that I was done and over it — and there are days now, six years later, when I am surprised to think fondly of my ex,” she said. “When you have a past that was long and intricately entwined, those feelings don’t go away overnight.”

2. If you have kids, note that the process will be even harder.

While it’s great to behave like grownups and co-parent for your kids’ sake, having to see your ex every time he or she swings by makes it a lot harder to move on, said HuffPost reader Diane Caron.

“Whether you have children together does make a difference,” she said. ”It’s something that we have to live with for the rest of our lives, even if we do move on.”

3. Remind yourself that you’re capable of moving on after divorce.

Don’t get too hung up on the theory that it takes half the length of the relationship‘s duration to process a breakup. You’ll feel more empowered once you accept that you’re in charge of moving on, not a calendar, divorce coach Emma Heptonstall said.

“Recovering from divorce is ultimately about being willing to let go,” she said. “Letting go frees up emotional space, physical space and creates a path on which you can move forward. Being open to the possibility that you might be able to move on is the first sign that you already have.”

4. Make a point to define who you are outside of the marriage.

Instead of fixating on moving on, try focusing on yourself and re-embracing the goals and interests you may have put aside during your marriage, said reader Barry Fraser.

“I don’t think there’s an exact timeframe for moving on but what I do think helps immensely is regaining confidence in yourself,” he said. “Chances are, your relationship changed who you were and you lost your identity or self worth.”

5.  Take comfort in knowing you might experience a moment where you finally feel free of the past.

For writer Amy Koko, the moment she knew she was over her ex (or as over an ex as you can be when you have kids) happened unexpectedly on Thanksgiving, two years post-split.

“The year before I had looked around and felt an overwhelming sadness for the one person who would never again be sitting at head of my table,” she said. “This year as we laughed at the table, I felt a flush of warmth remembering how my ex always drank a glass of egg nog with his turkey dinner. In that moment, I hoped he was enjoying his day as much as I was…and that’s when I knew.”

6. But don’t be surprised if a new wave of sadness hits after you thought you had processed your grief.

Six months after her “drama”-filled divorce was finalized, HuffPost blogger Lindsey Light felt emotionally ready to date again. But then, seemingly out of the nowhere, she experienced another bout of sadness.

“Today, I find myself still dealing with some of the repercussions of my divorce and marriage,” she said. “We were together seven years; I think it’s good that I’m aware of this as I move forward in my life and relationships. That said, I can say with certainty that I am no longer bitter or heartbroken — and I definitely don’t have any romantic feelings left for my ex.”

7. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get over it.

We put a lot of pressure on ourselves to move on after divorce — but maybe instead the goal should be some version of closure from the past, said psychologist Andra Brosh.

“One of the greatest misperceptions of divorce is that it’s something you move on from,” she said. “The end of a marriage can be grieved and embraced as a life experience, but the mark it leaves can never be erased.”

8. Down the road, try to look back fondly on the good times you had with your ex. (You know there were some good times.)

It’s healing in its own way to look back on the years you spent with your ex with a sense of appreciation, said Gould.

“I like to think that my ex still has a small place in my heart that’s compartmentalized,” she said. “I honor the time we had together, but limited in a healthy way.”

10 Lessons I Learned About Infidelity After Being Cheated On

2015-08-28-1440727931-5262209-sWOMANSTRESSCOUCHsmall.jpg

Finding out you have been cheated on sucks. No matter how marvelous, monotonous, or miserable you thought your marriage was, discovering the person you trusted most has betrayed you is like being sucker punched by Mike Tyson at church on Sunday.

Not only did my husband cheat, he also left me for his mistress and married her a little more than three years later which was just a few short months ago. They are now expecting their first child.

Sure, this would be a lot for any jilted spouse to absorb. In my case, I met my husband when I was 15, married at 22, and was separated by the time I was 39. Marriage was all I knew and suddenly becoming single in middle age was a lot to wrap my brain around. Sometimes, I admit, I still catch myself wondering how in the world this happened to me – to us – and why.

But there are reasons. And lasting effects.

Three years has provided me with ample opportunity to reflect on how infidelity has impacted my life and what I have learned from the experience, even though I am humble enough to know I am still learning. Here are my takeaways as of today.

1. Infidelity has little to do with appearance, money, education, or social status. Yours or the person with whom your spouse cheats. While I was married I was one of many onlookers who would make snap judgments about why someone else’s spouse was unfaithful. I never failed to weigh in when the husband of a friend left his wife for someone who was less attractive, less successful, less educated, and less respected in the community than she. Or vice versa. What I learned is none of these things matter. What matters is how we each feel in our partner’s company. Anything else takes a distant second place.

2. Infidelity is not your fault. Cheating is an act. When your spouse cheats it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with him or her. Cheating is a unilateral decision, a choice your spouse made without you. Your spouse could just as easily have made the choice to leave your marriage without betraying you first. His or her behavior is not a reflection of you, only of himself or herself.

3. But your marital problems are. To varying degrees. Sorry, but it’s true. I am always skeptical whenever I hear someone attribute the breakdown of a marriage entirely to his or her spouse, especially in those cases where one spouse was unfaithful. “I was the perfect wife.” “I was the greatest husband.” No, you weren’t. Nobody is all of those things all of the time even when a marriage is strong.

4. Infidelity changes you. The key is to make sure those changes become positive forces in your life, ones that make you wiser and stronger in your future relationships. Maybe you are more distrustful now. It’s understandable. But if that distrust begets more open communication with a new partner by inspiring you to ask questions rather than accept “bad behavior” at face value, you are giving yourself the respect you deserve. It’s up to you to show the world how you want and expect to be treated. If someone is not giving you respect, walk.

5. But not entirely. Meaning no one can take from you what you aren’t willing to give away. When someone doesn’t value you it doesn’t mean you don’t have value. My mother has a cousin whose first husband treated her badly. After being married to her second husband for some time, she was surprised to discover that everything her first husband said she did wrong her second husband said she did right! Remember who you are and rejoice in it. Guaranteed if you do someone else will, too.

6. If your spouse wants to leave, let him or her go. When my husband told me he was leaving I dropped to my knees and begged him to stay, to which he responded that HE would give ME one more week to become a “better wife” (translation: give up my autonomy and self-respect, what little I had left). He also agreed to have no contact with his mistress during that time, a promise I later learned he didn’t keep (thank you, Verizon). My husband never wanted or intended to stay which meant he had nothing to lose by negotiating with me. My weakened bargaining position, however, meant I did. The point is if both partners aren’t dedicated to repairing the marriage, the marriage cannot be repaired. Your spouse wants to leave? A friendly reminder to not to let the door hit him or her on the ass is actually more than he or she deserves.

7. It’s okay to forgive your spouse. Even if your spouse doesn’t believe or acknowledge he or she did anything wrong and doesn’t need or want your forgiveness. I forgave my ex-husband because it enabled me to move on. True forgiveness is a gift we give ourselves when we are ready and willing to give it, if ever.

8. It’s okay not to. For that repentant spouse who shows up out of the clear blue begging for your forgiveness so he or she can move on, remember you don’t owe anybody anything. Only yourself. Take as much time, even if it’s a lifetime, to heal. You are worth it. Anyone who truly values your forgiveness will wait for it.

9. Not everyone cheats. Nowadays cheating is rampant and it’s easy to become jaded as you hear more and more stories of infidelity. But it’s important to remember that not everyone cheats. Nothing is more unattractive than bashing an entire sex based on the behavior of some or even one. To combat such temptation choose a couple you know, the couple who enjoys or enjoyed the relationship you aspire to have and deserve to have one day, and make them your role model. For me, that couple remains my late grandparents. Whenever I get down in the dumps and think a healthy relationship isn’t possible, I remind myself how my very own grandmother and grandfather remained devoted to each other for nearly 60 years!

10. It’s better to be alone than to be cheated on. I was recently speaking with my ex-husband’s sister at a birthday dinner my ex-husband hosted for our daughter. His sister and I hadn’t spoken in years and while chatting with her about how challenging dating in today’s “hookup” culture can be, she quipped that in hindsight her brother must not look so bad to me now. I couldn’t disagree more and told her so (with him in earshot). Though I have endured my share of lonely nights and bad date nights in between, being with a man, whether my ex or someone new, who thinks so little of me that he could be unfaithful is simply not acceptable. After being cheated on, it’s not that I now expect more from any man who comes into my life. It’s that I no longer accept less.

Tab Hunter on Sophia Loren and the New Documentary About His Life

During Hollywood’s Golden Age, dreamy matinee idol Tab Hunter was the highest grossing movie star for Warner Bros. More than just a Hollywood heartthrob he starred in over 40 films including critically acclaimed movies like Battle Cry, That Kind of Woman and Damn Yankees. Hunter played opposite legends like Tallulah Bankhead, John Wayne, Sophia Loren, Natalie Wood, Gary Cooper, Rita Hayworth, Geraldine Page and Fred Astaire. He appeared on Broadway and on live TV. And if that wasn’t enough, his hit single “Young Love” exploded on the Billboard charts. The record took over the No. 1 spot knocking out a guy named Elvis Presley.

Last month, Tab Hunter Confidential, the documentary feature film about Hunter’s life and career, opened throughout the United States. When the film was shown at the esteemed Film Forum in New York City and the Cinema Arts Centre in Long Island, Hunter made an appearance at both locales and talked about the movie. Based on his autobiography of the same name, Tab Hunter Confidential features interviews with George Takei, Debbie Reynolds, Portia De Rossi, John Waters, Debbie Reynolds, Lainie Kazan, Connie Stevens and others.

For the very private Hunter, it took interviews conducted over the course of many years to have him share his stories. “At first I said who’d want to read a book on me…,” said Hunter about his autobiography which preceded and inspired the film. “But then I thought, why not get it from the horse’s mouth and not from some horse’s ass after I’m dead and gone?”

What was it like to work with Sophia Loren? And to dance for Bob Fosse? Will he ever go back to acting? Why did he turn down a part in the TV series 77 Sunset Strip? Tab Hunter gave Parade this exclusive interview.

Man In Bitter Custody Battle Claims Ex-Wife Is Coaching Kids To Make False Statements About Him

Amid accusations that include abuse, inappropriate touching, poisoning ice cream, and even putting a child in a garbage bag filled with rocks inside a bathtub with the water running, Sandra and Joey say they’ve been to court about 10 times fighting over the custody of their children.

Watch Sandra’s claim that she fears Joey could kill them; Joey says his ex is “crazy.”

“Sandra is coaching my children to make me look like a bad father,” claims Joey. “These stories are absolutely insane and they keep getting worse … Sandra is absolutely crazy and she’s making my kids believe these outlandish things about me, brainwashing them. She’s manipulating my children, and it’s disgusting.”

Sandra responds, “I am not coaching my daughters to lie. The stories that the girls come home saying are beyond insane, and there’s no way I could even make them up.”

The One Thing Bill Maher Loves About Donald Trump

On “Real Time With Bill Maher” Friday night, Maher led a panel discussion about the Republican presidential candidates’ greatest weaknesses, inspired by the question that opened the GOP debate Wednesday.

While Maher has expressed clearly negative feelings about Trump in the past, he did reveal one thing he appreciates about the candidate.

“Trump [was] the only guy who was honest,” Maher said to his panelists. “He said, ‘I don’t forgive.’ I love Trump for that. He’s like, I don’t forgive. You fuck with me, I’m Vito Corleone, I will follow you back to Italy. I will find you in your old age and I will stick a knife in your stomach.'”

Back in September, Maher called out Trump’s ignorant comments about undocumented workers by channeling him in a segment jokingly telling Americans to rally against Australians “taking” our jobs.

“Australia is not sending us its best people,” he said. “They’re bringing drugs — yes, enough for everybody, but still — they’re rapists — OK, not rapists, but they do a lot of fucking — and I assume some are good people.”

Sigh. It’s not too surprising that Maher had trouble finding something about Trump to like.

17 Celebrities Who Will Forever Be Haunted by the Songs About Them

Whenever a celebrity singer releases a breakup anthem, the public can't help but do some digging as to which of their famous significant others the song could be about. From Justin Timberlake's overt shout-out to Britney Spears in his "Cry Me a River" video to Taylor Swift's plethora of cryptic lyrics referencing past paramours, it's hard not to play detective and try to decode the possible messages. Justin Bieber recently dropped a new single called "Sorry," and people wasted no time declaring it a public apology to his ex Selena Gomez (for her part, Selena's 2014 hit "The Heart Wants What It Wants" was widely speculated to be about Justin as well). High-profile musicians write song lyrics about their wayward romances just like most nonfamous people would write in their journals – the only difference is that while your diary entry may be for your eyes only, their scrawled-on, tear-stained pages become chart-topping radio staples and songs of the Summer, popping up on postsplit playlists around the globe. Can you imagine being out with your friends, dancing the night away in a bar, when all of a sudden your ex's hit song (the one that everyone knows is about you) starts blaring from the speakers? Picture yourself in a beautiful restaurant on a third date, sipping wine and listening intently to them talk about their day before . . . what's that sound? Oh, it's just that person you dated for six months singing about how you broke their heart into a million tiny pieces. Such a bummer, right? We may never, ever find out who Carly Simon thought was "so vain," but at least we have these modern breakups tunes to scrutinize. Keep reading for 17 celebrities who will likely be haunted by the songs about them for the rest of their lives.

Usher And Nas Release Interactive Video For Song About Police Brutality, ‘Chains’

Nas and Usher have collaborated on a track aimed at addressing police brutality against people of color. The song, titled “Chains,” comes with an interactive video released via TIDAL that uses facial recognition technology in order to play. Viewers must look at the screen continuously as the faces of victims, like Trayvon Martin and Rekia Boyd, appear on the screen or the video will stop playing.

“In writing this song, I was motivated by the events involving prejudicial injustice that are still happening today,” Usher said in a statement. “The reality is that racial bigotry diminishes the lives of too many people in our country. We have to come together as a country to solve these problems and this is one way I can contribute.”

The “I Don’t Mind” singer also explained the concept behind using the “Don’t Look Away” theme.

“I chose to introduce the song through the ‘Don’t Look Away’ experience because it is important not only to feel the issue but to face it. The pain and suffering that these victims and their families have endured is something we must never forget. When we look away from this problem it gets worse. To fix it, we have to face it.”

News in Brief: Report: Nation Spends $50 Billion Annually To Get Kids Excited About Things

WASHINGTON—Taking into account investments by government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private industry, a report released Friday by the Pew Research Center revealed that a total of $ 50 billion is spent annually in the U.S. to get kids excited about things. “Each day in this country, well over $ 100 million is spent on efforts to take something, such as reading, science, going outdoors, or breakfast, and get kids excited about it,” said lead researcher Michael Hazlett, adding that in 2014 alone, over $ 10 billion was spent on getting kids excited about fruit. “In addition to the $ 50 billion that goes toward getting kids excited about fitness or dental hygiene or any number of other things, we found that an even larger sum of $ 65 billion is then spent each year on making those things fun.” The report concluded that at any given moment, an average of 0.3 percent …

Creator of Peeple, App That Lets You Rate Other People, Sets Record Straight About Product

Do you want to know what strangers, neighbors and friends really think of you? Or what if you could rate people you like or dislike for the rest of the world to see? A new app called Peeple, slated to launch later this year, will let you do just that. Originally designed to let others rate you in the areas of personal, professional and romance — similar to the way other apps rate businesses — Peeple is making headlines and causing controversy for what some say is its potential to lead to online harassment and bullying — or even ruin lives.

Peeple’s co-creator, Julia Cordray, says, in part, that the media has overreacted to what the app actually will do, and sits down to set the record straight on Dr. Phil.

“What is it that people misunderstand about this?” Dr. Phil asks.

“With the feedback, we’ve made some really great movements toward more positivity for our app,” Cordray says. “You are not anonymous on our app, you cannot have your profile started by anybody else. You have 100 percent opt-in ability. We really want to make sure that you have full control over what goes live on our app.”

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil asks Cordray how it could have never occurred to her or her investors that this app could ruin lives. “Seriously, you went to your VCs to raise money, and nobody around the conference table said, ‘What about cyberbullying?’” he asks.

“No, that was never anybody’s concern. So you have to imagine how surprised all of us were,” she replies. “We never would intend harm with a product or app. That’s just not who we are. I didn’t really anticipate this negative attention.”

Cordray’s entire interview airs on Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil.

Port 101: Everything You Need to Know About This Oft-Misunderstood Wine

port

Slowly, port is shedding its image of old-fashioned grandeur. While the sweet after-dinner quaff still suffers from stodgy connotations of a pipe-smoking grandfather reading Proust by the fireplace, this antiquated perception is unfortunate. Like sherry, which has seen an explosive nationwide resurgence thanks to bartenders weaving it into their contemporary concoctions, port is a fortified wine modern-day imbibers are beginning to rediscover. Sipped on its own, it’s a silky complement to the likes of post-prandial bleu cheese and bittersweet chocolate ganache tarts, or can even be relished alongside pork tenderloin; incorporated into cocktails, it adds a luxurious heft welcomed in autumnal tipples. Behold, an abbreviated primer on Portugal’s oft-misunderstood wine.

What Is Port?

In the same company as sherry, Madeira, and Marsala, port is a fortified wine—not to be confused with dessert wines like foie gras–happy Sauternes from France or Tokaji from Hungary, which boast large quantities of natural sugar. A fortified wine means its fermentation process has been halted by a jolt of grape spirit or brandy. This additional surge of alcohol ensures residual sugar and the sweet, lush mouthfeel synonymous with port. History buffs, take note: This process traces its roots back to the 18th century, when a spat between Great Britain and France led the Brits to Portugal to indulge their usually French-sated wine habits. A reinforcement of brandy ensured the wine they procured would still be fresh after the long haul back home. A roll call of such well-known port producers, including Taylor’s, Croft, Sandeman, and Graham’s, signifies how intertwined port’s history is with Great Britain’s.

Port is made exclusively in Portugal’s remote, verdant Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northern part of the country that is hailed as the world’s oldest demarcated wine region. On intensely steep hillsides, narrow terraces of vineyards teem with indigenous grape varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cão.

The mountainous landscape is staggering, best glimpsed from a train winding its way up from charming Oporto, the coastal city from which the wine takes its name. Although the grapes are grown in the Douro Valley, they have long been brought down the river in rabelo boats to be aged and bottled in the more weather-opportune caves of Vila Nova de Gaia, then marketed and exported from Oporto. At least one night in Oporto, say, dining on cod with “exploding” olives at Cantinho do Avillez and sleeping at the glamorous wine-themed The Yeatman hotel—where a treatment at the Caudalíe Vinothérapie Spa is mandatory—provides an urban contrast to the appealing rusticity of the Douro.

The Murderer’s Row, developed by cocktail educator Andy Seymour, features Fonseca Bin No. 27, bourbon, pear juice, muddled blackberries, lemon juice, and agave syrup.

What Are the Styles?

Given port’s tremendous aging potential, it is available in a number of (admittedly confusing) varieties. These are the different types one is most likely to encounter on a wine list:

White port: Port immediately conjures the image of a brooding red wine, but less well-known white port is its drier, zippier sibling. Bartenders, realizing its potential as a quenching alternative to gin, are now keen to meld it with tonic in myriad permutations. In this form, or simply on the rocks with a slice of citrus, it makes for a perfect summertime aperitif.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Siroco

Pink port: Spawned from red grapes, pink port is a relative newcomer to the category. Fresh and light-bodied, it can be served chilled and mixes rather nicely in bright cocktails.
Bottle to try: Croft Pink Port

Ruby port: Affordable and accessible, ruby is a great entry point for port drinkers. Comprised of a blend of grapes that hasn’t been aged for more than three years, it’s fruity and meant to be savored young.
Bottle to try: Fonseca Bin No. 27

Tawny port: This blended port, a go-to companion for dessert, acquires its distinctive amber hue from prolonged aging in oak before bottling. When a tawny is designated a colheita, it means the bottle contains grapes from one stellar vintage.
Bottle to try: Taylor Fladgate 20-Year-Old

Vintage port: This top-notch port is the most revered, but constitutes just a tiny portion of port sales. Aged in a barrel, then unfiltered and further aged in the bottle, it acquires complexity (and crust) and stars the grapes of one spectacular vintage. Save it for special occasions.
Bottle to try: Croft 2011 Vintage Port

Late-bottled vintage port: Less expensive than coveted vintage port, these wines spend more time softening in wood and are ready to be drunk as soon as they are bottled.
Bottle to try: Niepoort 2011 Late Bottled Vintage

The By the Fireside, served at Manhattan bar the Up & Up, is made with Croft 10-Year-Old tawny port, Café du Monde chicory coffee syrup, lemon juice, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

How Do You Drink It?

Port, in its naked, unadulterated state, is firmly entrenched in nightcap territory with good reason: It’s a heady send-off that lingers. Splurge on one of the great vintage ports and one might not crave anything else beyond good company and music. But it would also mesh nicely with aged Gouda or hearty venison. A ruby, abundant in fruit flavors, is a natural complement to desserts like blackberry cobbler or a juicy juxtaposition to a platter of smoked meats, while washing down salted almonds with white port is a magical sensation. Whether it’s with caramel flan or a chocolate layer cake, tawnies are what to seek out when the sweet tooth strikes.

But there’s now another alluring way to acquaint oneself with port, and that’s by drinking cocktails. Adrian Bridge, CEO of the Fladgate Partnership, which encompasses the brands Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft, says that Croft Pink was developed with cocktails especially in mind. “Port has an immense range of styles. The sommelier cares about the vintage port, but give the more accessible Croft Pink to a bartender and there are no rules. Bartenders have proven that port isn’t this scary thing that can only be sipped to toast the Queen of England,” he jokes.

At The Yeatman, which Bridge also runs, the Port Tonic is a staple, blending one part white port with two parts tonic, ice, and mint. An ideal summer tipple, it has been reimagined by countless bartenders, who turn to unexpected ingredients like basil and marmalade to give it depth. As the colder months wear on, however, it’s time for more nuanced creations like the holiday-perfect Coffee Cocktail. This frothy classic, which first appeared in the circa-1887 third edition of Jerry Thomas’s cocktail behemoth The Bartenders Guide, contains no energizing caffeine, but does unite ruby port and Cognac with a whole egg and simple syrup.

“The use of port in cocktails creates a great flavor combination because, depending on the style, it can add sweetness, tannins, and color at the same time,” says Alba Huerta, proprietress of hit Houston bar Julep. “The sugar levels are high, but the traces of wine production are also present. It can usually keep for a few weeks, unlike wine that keeps for a few days, so you can use it several times without the concern of it turning too quickly.”

Last holiday season, patrons of Cure, in New Orleans, were treated to the Bird of Paradise, mingling white port with Bittermens’ Commonwealth Tonic Liqueur, lemon juice, and whole nutmeg. Those who settle into Chicago joint Parson’s Chicken & Fish for the night can wait for their hush puppies with a Purple Drink, a mélange of table wine, port, and orange blossom water that tastes like a melted Popsicle. In New York City, at Brooklyn hangout Dram, Tonia Guffey makes the Feed Me Diamonds, an ode to the MNDR song of the same name. “It’s so eerie and beautiful,” Guffey points out. “It made me want to craft a drink around it.” The result was mixing Taylor Fladgate 10 Year Old Tawny Port with Armagnac, lemon juice, crème de cassis, and cinnamon simple syrup capped off with champagne.

“To be fed diamonds was something people would allegedly do to overthrow tyrannical figures. In this song, the dictator is her head fighting with her heart. She’s consumed by love. She says, ‘What’s the good in being good?’ To me that was like, ‘Yeah, fuck being good and behaving. Give me luxuries.’ So naturally I picked up a rich, round 10-year tawny port because it’s so decadent and elegant,” explains Guffey. “While it makes an excellent sipper, mixing with port is really sneaky and awesome because it’s got the body to hold up to spirits and the complexity is really wonderful. After shaking it up, I topped it with sparkling Brut, because again, if you’re going to be bad, be downright sinful.”

What Your Favorite Go-To Clothing Color Says About You Personality

By Christine Schoenwald

I recently read a piece in The Elephant Journal by Alex Myles where she talks about how the color of our clothes reveals a lot about our personality type. It made me consider how dressing can be a form of personal expression and how the clothes we wear send out messages to the world.

You can tell a great deal about a person by the colors they wear.

Color plays a major role in our lives by the way it influences our moods and emotions. You wouldn’t think that a color can make you feel secure or make you feel un-easy, but it can. When you choose to use a color or avoid it, that action can reveal much about your personality.

Even if you aren’t consciously aware of the symbolic meanings of certain colors, your subconscious is. What one color means to you may have a completely different meaning to me.

Here’s a guide to what the color of your clothing may be saying about you (with or without your knowledge):

Black colors: It used to be that black was the color of mourning. You only wore black while you were grieving. Luckily, wearing black is no longer just to respect the dead, and it’s perfectly acceptable to wear it at any time.

Punk, Goth, and clubs kids are known to wear a lot of black, and almost every woman has that perfect black dress that’s flattering to her body in her closet. Black symbolizes extremes — all or nothing — and is a color of strength, power, sophistication, elegance, and authority.

Photo: H&M

Blue colors: Blue soothes and cools. When you wear blue, you’re broadcasting creativity, positivity, peace, loyalty, and you’re saying that you’ve decided to live by your own rules, and by your own truth. Because blue wearers think for themselves, they’re smart, have a quick wit, and are independent.
2015-10-13-1444750101-311204-blue.png
Photo: H&M

Brown colors: When you wear brown, you’re representing all things solid and grounded such as the color of the earth. Brown is the color that people associate with someone who’s stable, smart, and dependable (like the UPS driver).
2015-10-13-1444750163-3124889-brown.png
Photo: H&M

Grey shades: One thing we all know is that there are many different variations, shades if you will, of grey. Wearing grey can wash you out, and make you seem indifferent, depressed, and apathetic. It can also seem suppressive and give off the impression of a lack of confidence. There’s a reason the classic color of sweatpants is grey.
2015-10-13-1444750266-3276750-grey.png
Photo: H&M

Silver colors: Wearing metallic colors like silver isn’t just for hookers or socialites any more; metallic clothing comes in everything from cute tops to sophisticated dresses. If you wear metallic, you’re letting the world know that you aren’t shy, but that you’re adventurous, up for anything, and hip.
2015-10-13-1444750340-2709379-silver.png
Photo: Macy’s

Not everybody can wear metallic; it reflects the light, which will make you look older, so either you’re young when you wear silver, or you’re a bad*ss.

Red colors: If you want to stand out and grab the spotlight, wear red. It’s the color of energy and is the symbol of life. An Indian bride wears red instead of white. Wearing red is empowering and can give you confidence. Red is also the color of sensuality, aggression, passion, and boldness.
2015-10-13-1444750403-7162386-red.png
Photo: H&M

Orange colors: Orange is known as the color that makes new possibilities happen. It’s creative, enthusiastic, and is associated with good times, warmth, and ambition. If you wear orange, you like to be the life of the party, and are in a positive, energizing, and engaging mood.
2015-10-13-1444750483-3690520-orange.png
Photo: H&M

Pink colors: Pink is very much associated with femininity, but when a man is comfortable with both the masculine and the feminine side to his personality, he can really rock a pink shirt or jacket. Pink is the unconditional love color and it’s known to sooth out aggression.
2015-10-13-1444750544-1192361-pink.png

Purple colors: Prince’s nickname of His Royal Purpleness is kind of redundant as purple is the color of royalty and is a symbol of wealth. If you want to convey that you’re rich — both of possessions and spirituality — then wear purple. Purple shows that you have a rich inner life, are intuitive, artistic, creative, and have great instincts about people.

Yellow colors: There’s no mistaking yellow, as it’s logical, happy, cheerful, and optimistic. It has the power to bring out creativity, but is completely overpowering if too much is used (you don’t want to dress head to toe in yellow or you’ll look like Big Bird). Yellow encourages intelligence and inspiration, and is a good color to wear when you need that added boost to finish a work project or ace those exams.

Green colors: Nature and money are green and both things are very important. Green is a calming color and is associated with generosity, healing, and a rejuvenated state of mind. People who wear green are charismatic and care deeply about the feelings of others.

White shades: Wearing white signifies cleansing and new beginnings. When you put on a white shirt or skirt, you feel as if you’re staring the day with a clean slate, and you appear to have a fresh and bright outlook. White is the color of balance, harmony, purity, and courage.

The color of clothing we wear tells the world and ourselves a little bit about us. We can use those colors to feel better and brighter. Once you know, you’ll have a secret method to feeling good about yourself and your day, even if that wasn’t the way it started out.

Guess What Famous Baby Mama Was Called Out About Hypocritical Matt Barnes-Derek Fisher Comments?

Photo via Kim Porter’s Instagram

Everyone has had something to say about the recent incident of Matt Barnes driving 95 miles to assault Derek Fisher, but it seems like everyone shouldn’t have an opinion, or some definitely shouldn’t express it. Fans recently roasted one of Diddy’s baby mamas, Kim Porter, as she offered her opinion on the situation. She basically said you shouldn’t sleep with a close friend or associate’s ex. Fans wasted no time in the comments “reminding” Kim that she was Diddy’s first baby mama Misa Hylton’s friend, and she was allegedly sleeping on Puff & Misa’s couch when her an Al B. Sure! broke up. To take it a step further they “reminded” Kim that Diddy and Al B. Sure! were very close and worked on music together. Well if all of this is the case, isn’t that the pot calling the kettle……..

9 Super Awkward Things About Sex After 50

We all know that sex doesn’t stop at age 50. For proof, look no further than the high rates of sexually transmitted disease that plague the 50+ population. But things do change a bit in the bedroom.

1. You may decide that beach sex is not worth it.

The urban dictionary defines “having sand in your vagina” as someone who complains about the little things or is unduly irritated by something. We would like to set the record straight: Real sand in your real vagina is a real thing and is way more than a little irritating. Nobody wants to have it, or the vaginal infection that invariably follows.

 2. It could take longer to get the ball rolling, so to speak.

Some older men experience erectile dysfunction and have a harder time getting and sustaining an erection. Some older women take longer to get aroused. The end result is that sometimes, you both may fall asleep trying.

3. You only think that sending your kids off to college will make the living room rug a clothing-optional location.

4. The dog believes her job is to sleep between you and if you were being honest, sometimes you’re not totally unhappy about it.

5. Women in the throes of hot flashes do not want anyone to touch them — anywhere.

6. While “Modern Family’s” Claire and Phil Dunphy can pretend they are strangers who meet in a hotel bar and get a room, one of you is bound to laugh and the other one is likely to fret over the cost of a hotel tryst.

But you can certainly endorse the poor man’s version where you arrive in separate cars in a bar and sit across the room making goo-goo eyes until one of you sends over a drink.

7. Leakage happens.

My oh my, the things we don’t talk about! Urinary incontinence during sexual intercourse is a common, but rarely volunteered, problem. A British study found that 24 percent of women experience it. In about two-thirds of the cases, the leakage occurs when the penis penetrates the vagina. One-third of the time, the leakage occurs only at orgasm. The likely cause is an irritable bladder or a weakness at the neck of the bladder. See your doctor; there’s a pill for that.

 8. The kitchen counter was never comfortable but now you are old enough to say it.

But sharing a bath? That’s another story, one with a happy ending even if one partner needs to be persuaded.

9. If someone mentions Plato’s Retreat, you have a senior moment.

Right along with swinger parties, there are some things best left in the past.

Obama Gives Kanye West Some Advice About Getting Into Politics

President Barack Obama gave Kanye West some advice about getting elected on Saturday.

The rapper recently announced he was running for president in 2020. Obama, alluding to the inability of House Republicans to find a new speaker, suggested Kanye could be a candidate for that position instead.

“You may have heard that Kanye is thinking about running for Speaker of the House. It couldn’t get any stranger,” Obama said at a fundraiser in San Francisco. He dispensed some tips ”in case Kanye is serious about this whole POTUS thing, or as Kanye calls it, ‘Peezy.'”

“Do you really think this country is going to elect a black guy from the south side of Chicago with a funny name to be president of the United States?” Obama said. “That’s cray.”

“Saying you have a beautiful dark twisted fantasy — that’s what’s known as ‘off message’ in politics,” he continued.

Obama also suggested that West’s appearances on “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” might serve him well in politics.

“You got to deal with strange characters who behave as if they are on a reality TV show,” Obama said.

Infographic: How To Talk To Your Child About Sex

It’s not easy to decide when and how to have a discussion with children about sex, and many parents wonder how explicit they should be or where to establish boundaries. Here are The Onion’s tips for having “the talk” with your kids:

  • Avoid being too vague or abstract when explaining sexual acts by using examples from your own life.
  • Make sure your children are paying close attention to what you’re saying, as it will undoubtedly inform their future memoir.
  • It’s also constructive to highlight for your child all the healthy alternatives to sex, such as youth groups and proselytizing.
  • Be an open book. Go ahead and tell them about all three sex positions.
  • Emphasize that sex is, above all, a consensual act. These are great lessons your child will carry with them until Beta Delta Tau initiation night.
  • If in doubt, let Coach Michelson handle it …

Robots Read News – About Humans in Metal Cages

If your firewall is blocking the image, see it on my Twitter page here.

image

On an unrelated topic…

When I wrote God’s Debris in 2001, I thought it would be a decade or more before it caught on. The zeitgeist wasn’t ready, but it was heading in that direction. So I engineered the book to have a time-release trigger. (That was literally my plan.) Looks like we’re on schedule. It is number one in its sub-category.

image

And what triggered the time release?

Donald Trump.

I did not predict Trump specifically, but I did expect society to start realizing that humans do not use reason to make decisions. (That’s the lesson I learned in hypnosis class in my twenties.) Trump is demonstrating – via his powers of persuasion – that free will is an illusion, at least for some voters, and the impact of that realization will change the world in subtle but important ways. Once you let go of your certainty about your view of reality, God’s Debris is a fun read. Or so I hoped when I wrote it.

The sequel, The Religion War, published in 2004, also has a time-release trigger. I designed the trigger to activate when three specific things happened in the world:

A caliphate forms in the Middle East. (check)

There is talk of walling off the caliphate. (check)

Terrorists use hobby-sized drones for attacks on U.S. soil. (soon)

In the book, a conservative leader named Cruz rises to power in the United States and gains control of the military. That part seems unlikely. Right?

That’s what makes it fiction.

The Hardest Part About Dating As A Divorced 20-Something

I was 28 years old when I filed for divorce and became single again for the first time since I was legally allowed to drink. But walking around the streets of Manhattan, I was just another twenty-something-year-old single girl. I didn’t “look” divorced.

I know this doesn’t really seem like a big deal — or if anything, it seems like a good thing, right? No visible scars. I was young, I didn’t have any kids and I was in the “typical” age range for dating and all that.

But this meant that anyone I dated automatically assumed that my single status was the same as everyone else’s: maybe I had some prior relationships, but I still hadn’t found the right guy.

And the way dating works if you’re seemingly just-a-regular-girl-in-the-big-city is that there is a common set of expectations around the timeline of how things go down:

  • First kiss: fair game for the first date.
  • More er, intimate stuff: sometime after the third date.
  • Meet the friends: after a couple months of consistent dating.
  • Mention that you’re in the process of getting a divorce: ummmmm… ?!!!?

Dilemma. When do you mention that you’ve been married before?

I had some friends who told me, “You don’t have to tell him about your situation, that’s none of his business”. But those people just didn’t understand what being divorced at 28 really feels like. And since you’ve lived within a marriage, you know better than anyone just how important honesty and trust are to a healthy relationship.

If you get far enough along dating someone where it feels like it’s time to broach the topic of previous relationships, you’ve probably built up some intimacy between you. Therefore, waiting too long to mention, “By the way I’m divorced,” might erode some of that trust you’ve worked hard to establish.

I mean, imagine saying that to someone who thinks they know you. Feels like a huge deal, right? My biggest fear about this situation was that nobody would want to be with me once they found out I was going through a divorce.

The good news is that this fear turned out to be totally unfounded. Here are some of the typical responses I got:

  • Disbelief: “You’re divorced?”
  • Digging deeper: “Do you have kids?”
  • Security check: “Is there still anything between you two?”
  • Gathering facts: “How long has it been?”
  • Trying to make you feel good about yourself: “His loss.”
  • Awkward commentary: “It’s not weird. It would be weird if you were still married.” (… the paperwork for my divorce took three years to finalize, I was technically still married for most of my dating life…awkward!).

The common thread through all of this was that the guy on the receiving end of the information was trying to make sense of what it meant in terms of him and me. Nobody ever seemed bothered by this news. Nor did anyone (who was nice/sane) try to use my past against me. Ever.

So fear not. I found that the “I have an ex husband” thing doesn’t have to be a big deal in your new relationship as long as you take care of a couple things:

  • Be honest before you get too serious or intimate with someone.
  • Make sure that he feels secure in your relationship with him.

And if you are divorced and out in the wild, dating again, please remember that getting divorced when you’re this young isn’t “just a break-up.” Your ex-husband was a member of your family and since you’re still so young, he also probably was a part of your world for most or all of your adult life. Dealing with that kind of loss, especially when the vast majority of your peers just can’t relate to your situation is not easy. Take it slow while you heal, and always trust your instincts.

If you divorced in your 20s and learned a lot about love, life and yourself in the process, we’d love to hear your story for our series, Divorced By 30. Send us a 500-800-word essay or an idea for a blog post to divorcedby30@huffingtonpost.com

6 Things Men Complain About In Marriage Counseling

What do husbands talk about — and more pointedly, complain about — when they sit down with their partner and a marriage therapist?

Below, three psychotherapists who work extensively with couples share the biggest issues that men say cause friction in their marriages.

1. My wife expects me to be a mind reader.

Men talk a lot about how unfair it is that they’re expected to know exactly what their wives are thinking and feeling at all times, said Marcia Naomi Berger, a psychotherapist and author of Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes to the Relationship You’ve Always Wanted. Then when the husbands misread the situation, they feel like they’re somehow the bad guy.

“It’s so wrong for women to assume, ‘My partner should know how I feel and what I want. I shouldn’t have to tell him,'” said Berger. “Wives should be direct but husbands can also help by encouraging their spouses to say specifically what they want. Then, he should either accommodate or negotiate so both of their needs are met.”

2. The late night arguments are getting out of hand.

He’s just about to drift off to sleep… and then his wife rolls over and brings up some major household or relationship issue that needs addressing right away, sleep be damned. It may sound like a relatively minor problem, but it’s an almost universal complaint among married men, said Elisabeth J. LaMotte, a couples psychotherapist and founder of the DC Counseling and Psychotherapy Center.

“Often, from the woman’s perspective, the topic feels so important that she can’t possibly sleep until things have been adequately discussed,” LaMotte explained. “But for many men, this is the least appealing time to talk. They feel like their exhaustion and need to sleep is being dismissed by their wives.”

To curb unexpected late-night convos, LaMotte suggests carving out some time — maybe it’s 10 minutes after work or right after dinner — when spouses can give their full attention and mental energy to issues that matter.

3. She doesn’t appreciate me.

When speaking with husbands who’ve cheated, psychotherapist and Neuman Method co-creator M. Gary Neuman said the biggest complaint usually isn’t a lackluster sex life, but rather feeling under-appreciated by their wives.

“The problem is, too many women think that if they are overly appreciative to their husbands, they’ll reduce their husband’s desire to please her. It’s quite the opposite. actually. Men are energized when they feel their wives are appreciating them,” he said.

4. She doesn’t back me up when I discipline the kids.

To be an effective parenting team, you need to establish a genuinely united front for the kids’ sake: When dad says to take it easy on the Halloween candy, mom needs to back him up. But Berger said many husbands complain about having to go it alone on discipline.

“They feel like there’s no backup,’ she said. “Couples really need to support each other in front of the kids and talk to each other in advance so they can agree on what disciplinary action will occur. When children know their parents disagree about what they’re allowed to do or on consequences for breaking rules, they’re likely to play one parent against the other — and that only results in stress for the couple.”

5.  She’s not interested in sex.

Sex may not be as hot and heavy as it used to be, but for most couples, it still needs to be a priority. Neuman said that men often complain that they’re starting to feel more like roommates than spouses — their wives just don’t seem interested in sex anymore.

“The biggest complaint in the intimacy department for men is not about how satisfying sex is with their wives, but that they feel there’s simply not enough,” he said.

The solution doesn’t rest squarely on wives’ shoulders, said Neuman; husbands need to work on fostering intimacy by lending their wives some support outside the bedroom.

“Research shows that when men split the duties of household chores and child-rearing, they have more sex,” he said. “Couples need to talk about what will make both of them happier — what each need in order to create a more intimate relationship.”

6. Our marriage is no longer a priority for her.

In therapy sessions, men tell Berger that at some point in time, they feel like their marriage took a backseat to nearly everything else in their wives’ lives: the kids, her career, nights out with friends. To rebuild that sense of partnership, Berger tells couples to make a real effort to go on date nights once a week.

“It should be a time to relax and daydream out loud, like when you were courting — before the responsibilities of married life kicked in!” she said. “Then also schedule marriage meetings where you work on resolving issues and fostering teamwork within your marriage.”

Date nights — along with loosely structured conversations about marriage and family responsibilities – should go a long way in bringing spouses closer together, Berger said.

Comedian Who Lied About Surviving 9/11 Opens Up For The First Time

Comedian Steve Rannazzisi, in his first public comments since he was exposed for lying he was in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks, explained how he believed his deception protected him from “cruel” fellow comedians and defined his career.

Rannazzisi, star of “The League,” apologized Tuesday during a 40-minute interview on Howard Stern’s radio show and addressed last months’ New York Times story that revealed he wasn’t working in the Merrill Lynch office on the 54th floor of the World Trade Center south tower when the north tower was hit. Rannazzisi recounted the fake experience to interviewers for years and claimed the ordeal motivated him to follow his dreams of being an entertainer.

“Do you think of yourself as psychologically disturbed? How do you view yourself after doing this thing?” Stern asked.

“Psychologically disturbed — I don’t know if that’s the way to put it,” Rannazzisi said. “I do see someone and am starting to figure out more about myself: codependency and wanting people to like me and to make people happy.”

The “why” is still unclear, he said.

“It wasn’t calculated at all,” he said. “It was as simple as sitting at the Comedy Store and everyone being like, ‘Hey, you’re from New York?’ ‘Yeah.’ ‘Were you just there? You were around?’ ‘Yeah, I was downtown.’ ‘You worked there?’ ‘Yeah, I did.’”

Within seconds, Rannazzisi said he felt he couldn’t set the record straight.

“You have like 15 seconds, I think, to kind of go, ‘Wait, hold on. Stop. I’m sorry. That’s not true.'” he said. “If you pass that 15 seconds … now, it becomes a thing where you’re like, ‘Now, I have to be the guy that’s very strange and weird and just said I lied about 9/11.’”

Once the fake story gained traction, Rannazzisi said the resulting sympathy gave him security in the brutal comedy community.

“I think it might have been like, comedians are cruel people, especially in the beginning,” he said. “And I kind of was like, well maybe people will not be as mean to me or not make as many jokes about me because they think that this is what I went through.”

When the Times confronted him last month with conflicting versions of his 9/11 story, Rannazzisi responded with a statement confirming that he had lied. The confession may be damning to his career, but he said he feels relief and is glad he can finally apologize.

“I know what I did was terrible, and I know that I hurt a lot of people — people that lost people, people that helped people survive — and those people, those are the people that I truly am sorry,” he said. “That’s why I wanted to come on here.”

Amber Rose Breaks Down While Speaking About Wiz Khalifa (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Amber Rose hosted her “Slut Walk” in Los Angeles this weekend, and she used that event as an opportunity to address her critics. While speaking with supporters, Rose discussed her past relationships with Hip Hop stars Kanye West and Wiz Khalifa.

Amber’s speech included her reflecting on Kanye saying he had to take thirty showers after being with her. She also called Wiz the most amazing guy she ever met and admitted they still love each other. The former exotic dancer began to cry as she tried to talk about her ex’s lyrics in the song “For Everybody.”

“[Wiz] went on to make a song saying he, ‘fell in love with a stripper, but fell out of love quicker.’ As you can imagine, him being the love of my life – regardless if we’re going through a separation or not – that was extremely hurtful,” said Amber before breaking down.

The crowd started clapping and shouting words of encouragement at Amber. She then continued speaking about being hurt by Wiz’s words.

“So he came out with that song, and that really hurt me, because all I did was love him,” stated Amber. “I just loved him so much and gave him a beautiful son. To be told I was nothing but a stripper… it hurt.”

Hillary Clinton: I Learn Something About Myself From ‘SNL’ Impersonations

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is excited to appear on “Saturday Night Live” this week, but wouldn’t say whether she prefers Amy Poehler or Kate McKinnon‘s impersonations of her more.

While Clinton said that she was more familiar with Poehler’s impressions of her, she added that she looked forward to seeing more of McKinnon’s. She added that she was happy “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels had both women do impersonations of her on the show.

“They come at it from a slightly different perspective, and I learn something about myself watching them pretending to be me, so I’m looking forward to spending the time with Kate,” the presidential hopeful said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Friday. “I mean, I’m just thrilled that he’s got these amazing women doing these impersonations. I want to see how it goes.”

Clinton added that she loved the atmosphere of rehearsal, where one often has to fly by the seat of one’s pants.

“It is crazy. I mean, you show up and they’re still writing it and, you know, putting together the airplane in the air and they’re showing you what they want you to say and where they want you to stand and then they decide, no, they want to do it different,” she said. “I love it because it is almost like a creative act that you’re in the middle of, and you’re participating but you’re also watching and learning from it.”

Neil deGrasse Tyson Changed Bill Maher’s Mind About Water On Mars

Bill Maher was not into the big Mars news when it came out. Then Neil deGrasse Tyson came along.

On Friday’s “Real Time,” Maher explained deGrasse Tyson actually convinced him that the discovery of water on Mars was extremely important.

“I’m admitting, you know, I changed my mind,” Maher said before deGrasse Tyson went into his “spiel” about how many important discoveries like atoms and electricity were also written off at first and how life on Earth could’ve possibly been “seeded” from Mars.

More importantly, the scientist also says there is ice at the poles of Mars, prompting Maher to ask the most vital question, “So they might have room service?”

“Possibly,” deGrasse Tyson laughed.

“Real Time with Bill Maher” airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on HBO.
