The Boom, The Bip: The 30th Anniversary Of A Tribe Called Quest’s People’s Instinctive Travels And The Paths of Rhythm

A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip

Source: Steve Eichner / Getty

Writer’s Note: I distinctly remember purchasing the cassette for A Tribe Called Quest’s debut; this was the old days when new albums dropped on Tuesdays and us young Hip-Hop fanatics lined up at our local record store. I owned a low-budget radio system that was my refuge from the tension of growing up poor, marginalized,, and on the cusp of manhood, rushing home with the gold in hand.

People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was unlike anything I ever heard. I was familiar with Q-Tip and the late Phife Dawg, having heard them on De La Soul’s epic “Buddy” Native Tongues remix. I had school the next day, but I stayed up attempting to learn the entire album in a night. I didn’t achieve that feat, but I’ll never forget playing the album for a friend the following afternoon and his boisterous “OH SH*T!” because of the horn loop on the album’s opener, “Push It Along,” which we learned way later in life was sampled from Grover Washington’s “Loran’s Dance.”

This album will always hold a special place in my development as a music lover and, frankly, as a Black man in America. Tip, Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Jarobi were just a few years older than me but were still in that space of discovering themselves. I too was searching answers, and ACTQ were companions in that journey, unbeknownst to them. By now, the surviving members of the group are well aware of their legacy and what they helped pioneer. The entire culture of Hip-Hop owes them a great deal of gratitude.

The late 1980s has long been considered the height of Hip-Hop’s Golden Age by some observers, and it isn’t difficult to assume why. Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick, and The Ultramagnetic MCs helped change the entire approach to rapping. De La Soul and their producer Prince Paul transformed how beats were made by digging deep into the archives of the acts of old and creating something otherworldly. And on the other side of the map, N.W.A. became talented, foul-mouthed superstars that took the industry by storm.

A Tribe Called Quest almost didn’t happen as we know it. The group’s frontman, Q-Tip, was a curious and studious Hip-Hop hopeful who landed on The Jungle Brothers’ 1988 debut album, Straight Out The Jungle. From there, Q-Tip immersed himself in all aspects of production and music, having already been blessed with one of the genre’s best vocal instruments even then. For all of the group’s talent, record labels didn’t know what to do with Tip and his three brethren, considering then that Hip-Hop was not the cultural powerhouse it is today.

Luckily for the listeners, and with Kool DJ Red Alert’s guidance, the eccentric Queens-Brooklyn quartet inked a deal with Jive Records and released their stellar debut album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. The album was a continuation of the warmth and lyrical depth exhibited by the aforementioned Plugs and the JBs, firmly anchored by the complex schemes of The Abstract and the straight-ahead grit of the Five Foot Assassin. And it is no doubt that the album was primarily a vehicle for Q-Tip to come into his own.

Overall, the album’s themes are typical of coming of age fare, but with considerable nods towards what it meant to be young and Black in New York City. It would also serve as a necessary jumpstart for Phife, who didn’t take music seriously as his longtime friend in Q-Tip, but saw the later value after coming into his own in subsequent releases. But it was People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm that gave way to the years of amazing music we’ve been blessed to experience.

It isn’t known if it was planned, but Q-Tip, real name Kamaal Fareed, turned 20 the day his album hit shelves and he turns 50 today. He may not have the world’s most extensive catalog of music, but it certainly is one of the most potent with three solo albums, dozens of guest appearances, and production credits for the likes of talented wordsmiths such as Roc Marci, Danny Brown, and more. Q-Tip was also named was named the artistic director for hip hop culture at the Kennedy Center in 2015.

Phife Dawg, who struggled with health issues later in life, passed in 2016 from complications arising from diabetes. But he too left behind a body of work that has garnered recognition and was cemented via Tribe’s final album, We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service, released in 2016. Jarobi, who showed off his little known rapping ability on Tribe’s last set, found success as a chef and also formed a group with fellow Native Tongues member, Dres The Black Sheep known as evitaN. Muhammad has gone on to great heights as a DJ and producer, working alongside fellow producer, Adrian Younge in recent times.

For those of us who were alive when the album was released, and especially for those of us who purchased the record those three decades ago, it should be especially important for us to reconnect with the sound that helped shape our mental landscapes and our spiritual pursuits. Every era of Hip-Hop has its share of classic releases and the debates have raged on inside barbershop and backyards for years. Yet it should come to little surprise that even the harshest critic can find the resounding merit in comfortably placing People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm far ahead of other releases of the era.

Check out the streams of the album below.

The Osiris Of This: Celebrating The 25th Anniversary Of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s ‘Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version’

Ol' Dirty Bastard Shoots "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" Video

Source: Al Pereira / Getty

The Wu-Tang Clan shifted the recording industry in the 1990s by not only emerging as an unstoppable collective but also securing solo deals for the nine members of the group’s top tier. Ol’ Dirty Bastard emerged as a star for the New York crew by way of his debut album Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, which was released 25 years ago today (March 28).

RZA, GZA, the aforementioned Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, and Masta Killa transformed the Hip-Hop landscape with their debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) in 1993. The single “Protect Your Neck,” which introduced much of the world to the Wu Swordsman, featured a verse from ODB that, alongside Method Man’s scene-stealing turn, burned itself into the memory of fans for good reason.

Hip-Hop fans approached ODB’s solo album with hopes that it would feature more of the same left-field styled coupled with the “what will he do next” personality the rapper born Russell Jones became famous for. They were not disappointed on that front.

After an intro that puts all of the zaniness of ODB at the front of the mind for the listeners, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” blares through with RZA’s signature thump and ODB’s performance set the tone early. The following track “Baby C’Mon” features more of that Ruler Zig Zag Zig Allah dust, and the album’s first single “Brooklyn Zoo” sounds as timeless as ever with True Master delivering one of the few tracks not helmed by The Abbot.

Rapping in stunted growling grunts and breaking into off-key song at times where it doesn’t even make sense, ODB appeared larger than life. He instantly became an undeniable presence across the album, most certainly propelled by RZA’s guidance on the tracks. The production is decidedly muddy as if it were recorded in a Brooklyn closet; the bass bleeds on even the best-quality speakers and it sounds that this was the intention.

By the time listeners reached “Raw Hide,” there are still dips and turns left in ODB’s rap arsenal:

Tired of sittin’ on my f*ckin ass
N*ggas I know be runnin’ around with mad f*ckin’ cash
Who the f*ck wanna be an emcee
If you can’t get paid to be a f*ckin’ emcee?
I came out my momma p*ssy, I’m on welfare
Twenty-six years old, still on welfare
So I gotta get paid fully
Whether it’s truthfully or untruthfully

In past interviews, Method Man stated that a bulk of the album consisted of old rhymes from RZA and GZA’s rhyme books but he did admit that ODB did know how to write his own verses. But because of his voice, style and natural charisma, it didn’t matter what the source of the lyrics, especially with the level of performance ODB presented across the album.

A remastered version of Return to the 36 Chambers has been released to commemorate the 25 years since its release, along with a mini-documentary from Amazon Music that features words from RZA, Raekwon, his widow, Icelene Jones, and his son Barson “Young Dirty Bastard” Jones. ODB is a sorely missed voice in Hip-Hop and would probably still find a way to bulldoze his way onto the airwaves despite the genre’s many shifts in sounds in the years since his untimely passing.

For now, we’ll hold on tight to the audio memory of Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Hopefully, tonight somewhere in ODB’s beloved “Brooklyn Zoo,” a 40 or two will be cracked, safely indoors of course, with the speakers blasting the record in Ason Unique Allah’s honor.

You Nice, Lord: The 20th Anniversary Of Ghostface Killah’s ‘Supreme Clientele’

Loud Records 25th Anniversary Concert

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

February on the east coast, especially north of the Carolinas, places a familiar winter chill over the cities and towns that make up the region. A common theme of the lower temps is music that fits the barren trees and concrete backdrops, and Ghostface Killah‘s sublime album Supreme Clientele, celebrating its 20th anniversary today, embodies the best of that audio tradition.

With the turn of the century, the Wu-Tang Clan became a household name and a steady string of solo releases from the founding members set in motion the crew’s dominance within the culture. Method Man’s November 1994 debut album Tical, Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s March 1995 debut Return To The 36 Chambers, Raekwon’s August 1995 debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, and GZA’s November 1995 second album, his first under the Wu-Tang banner, Liquid Swords, all cemented RZA as the visionary of the sprawling collective.

In October 1996, Ghostface Killah’s debut Ironman gave way to the manic and impassioned delivery of the once-mysterious swordsman, with plenty of assistance from his brethren in Raekwon, Cappadonna, and RZA’s guiding hand on production. And 1997’s Wu-Tang Forever double-disc featuring the entire Clan along with other releases from U-God, Sunz Of Man, Killah Priest, Killarmy and other We affiliates ended out the decade.

Supreme Clientele was a welcomed shift in sound from Ironman and highlighted other producers aside from the RZA, who still oversaw the project’s sonic direction and produced around half of the songs. The end result of the project was more lyrically dense than Ghostface’s previous efforts. And while GFK’s freewheeling style was refined, there was also a tangible level of renewed hunger present in his verses along with sprinklings of street tales, fly imagery, and Five Percent Nation teachings.

Consider the opening track “Nutmeg,” and the stream of consciousness displayed throughout:

Bout it, bout it, Lord forgive me, Ms. Sally shouted
Tracey got shot in the face, my house was overcrowded
You fake cats done heard it first
On how I sh*tted on your turf that time, Cuban Link verse yo
Check out the rap kingpin, summertime, fine jewelry dripping
Face to the box, I seen your ear twitching
As soon as I drove off, Cap’ came to me with three sawed-offs
Give one to Rae’, let’s season they broth

This was followed by the word wizardry of the following track “One” which featured more of Ghost’s random stylings:

Ayo, we at the weed gate, waiting for jake
We want eight ravioli bags, two thirsty villains yelling bellyaches
Heavyweight rhyme writers, hitting the grass that’s the ripest
Pull out this kite from this white b*tch
Talking ’bout, “Dear Ghost, you the only n*gga I know
Like when the cops come, you never hide your toast”
Guest starred in mad sh*t, CBL, Ice Water metallic
Past tense placed in gold caskets
Dru Hill bitches, specialist lounging at the mosque
Suede kufi wrap, undercover dentist
Rhymes is made of garlic, never in the target when the NARCs hit
Rumor is you might start to spit
You nice Lord, sweet daddy Grace, wind lifted
On the dancefloor, makeover’s free followed by gauze
Duncan Hines monument cakes, we never half-baked
Alaskan, sexcapade, push your new court dates
Trauma, hands is like candy canes, lay my balls on ice
The branches in my weed be the vein
Swimsuit issue, darts sent truly from the heart, boo, I miss you
See daddy rock a wristful

There isn’t much of a narrative present across Supreme Clientele, although Ghost’s penchant for storytelling was on display on tracks like “Saturday Nite” and “Child’s Play” but for the most part, it was just darts upon darts.

Two strong posse cuts, “Buck 50” featuring Redman and Wu members Method Man and Cappadona, and “Wu Banga 101” with GZA, Cappadonna, Masta Killah, and Raekwon are notable for their potency. The late Lord Superb also shined brightly on the tracks “Ghost Deini” and “We Made It” while “Cherchez La Ghost” became an unexpected club hit with U-God on the assist.

Ghostface’s momentum continued in the following year with his album Bulletproof Wallets ahead of moving to Def Jam Records in 2004 with the release of The Pretty Toney Album. Ghost is still going as he approaches his 50th birthday this coming May, this after dropping Ghostface Killahs last year.

The high quality of Supreme Clientele has allowed it to retain its influence over the past two decades as it inspired the current generation’s leaders of the underground in Griselda, with Westside Gunn naming his second studio album Supreme Blientele in tribute.

Ask any Wu-Tang Clan fan and they’ll rattle off their picks for the best of the crew’s best material, but a significant portion of that group will undoubtedly name Supreme Clientele as their favorite for good reason. From start to finish, Toney Starks’ microphone prowess and passion are undeniable and, for many listeners, it remains his crown jewel. You nice, lord, indeed.

Take a listen to the classic Supreme Clientele below.

Timz N Hoodz: The 25th Anniversary Of Smif-N-Wessun’s Classic Debut Dah Shinin’

Soul Rebels with Talib Kweli, Buckshot, Smif N Wessun In Concert - New York, NY

Source: Johnny Nunez / Getty

The Boot Camp Clik is, without doubt, one of the signature crews of the 1990s alongside the Wu-Tang Clan and many other collectives, ushering in a hard-edged style that has slowly remerged in recent times. Leading the charge for the BCC 25 years ago was the duo of Smif-N-Wessun with their debut album, Dah Shinin’, one of the brightest examples of wintertime corner boy music ever created.

The emergence of Duck Down Music as a record label after serving as a management company for the groups Black Moon and Smif-N-Wessun was cemented with the release of Tek and General Steele’s Dah Shinin’, a menacing and relentless boom-bap affair that still holds well today.  Helmed by the sprawling production crew Da Beatminerz, Smif-N-Wessun burst on the scene on the heels of the 1994 single “Bucktown” with the Brooklyn rappers sounded at home over crackling drums and dusty loops.

The appearance of Clik crew members Rockness Monsta, Ruck aka the late Sean Price, Starang Wondah, Louisville Sluggah aka Hennyville, Top Dog, and Buckshot gave the album the necessary lyrical balance and grit that defined the times. But it was the chemistry and notably strong bond between Tek and Steele was undeniable, as heard on the Dah Shinin’s closing track “P.N.C.”

With their distinct, Jamaican patois-tinged verses, Smif-N-Wessun and the BCC went on an unstoppable run that year culminating into the release of The Fab 5’s “Blah” single and its b-side “”Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka” becoming a smash hit. The following year, the Fab 5 split into two groups, Ruck and Rock with Heltah Skeltah and Starang, Louisville and Top Dog forming O.G.C. with both crews dropping their respective debuts in 1996.

However, credit should be rightly given to Smif-N-Wessun’s bone-chilling debut that set the tone for the Clik and we’re happy to report that the duo is still active and released the incredibly solid The All in 2019 with production from longtime Clik collaborator 9th Wonder and The Soul Council.

Although the East Coast is going through an unusually warm spell in 2020, when it surely gets brick outdoors again, put on Dah Shinin’ and watch the landscape get grittier by the second.

Listen to Smif-N-Wessun’s Dah Shinin’ below.

Tatler Dedicates 310th Anniversary Issue to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex

Tatler’s 310th anniversary edition is dedicated to today’s most buzzed-about British royal: Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.
While the Duchess herself did not sit for an interview or photoshoot for the issue (the magazine ran a photo of Markle from 2015 as the cover shot) four Tatler writers — Lynn Barber, Afua Hirsch, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown and Lionel Shriver provide their takes on the new royal. Tatler also conducted a nationwide poll, canvassing the public as to whether she conquers or divides the nation.
The magazine feature comes at a time when Markle is under even more scrutiny than usual. In the documentary “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey” — which follows Prince Harry and Markle on their recent royal tour of Africa — Markle admits that she’s been struggling to deal with the increasing negative press since joining the royal family.

The 25th Anniversary of Digable Planets’ 2nd LP, ‘Blowout Comb’

House Of Vans Chicago Grand Opening

Source: Daniel Boczarski / Getty

Blowout Comb, the second and final studio album from the Digable Planets, has reached the quarter-century mark of existence and improves upon the trio’s debut for several reasons we’ll cover in this piece. Beyond its dense production, muddied vocals, and pro-Black leanings, the record also retains its timelessness and kaleidoscopic lyricism.

A note from the author:

I usually steer away from injecting my personal connections to music in my writing, but it’s more so because I’m largely uninterested in reading myself wax poetic about the sounds I’ve enjoyed as it’s largely subjective. There is no reason for me to tell the reader how much this record means to me because then, it builds up an expectation that it might not meet. However, I’m compelled to share my experiences with Blowout Comb as I need to share why this album holds such a dear space in my heart.

Some who know me personally might know that I’m a member of the Five Percent Nation or the Nation of Gods and Earth, also known as “Five Percenters” and I won’t belabor that point. I also do not freely write about that part of my life in my writing because, once again, it’s not just a passing fancy, it has literally transformed my life.  I am devoted to our teachings like never before and relistening to Blowout Comb this year to place my mind back into 1994 has supported that effort.

Listening to this album, 25 years later, I feel emboldened, reinvigorated. When Ish raps, “My hero died in prison, George Jackson” on the song “Jettin’,” I still raise my fist just as I did the first time I heard it when I listened to this album on my Walkman riding home on the Red Line Metro train in Washington, D.C. One has to remember: this is the mid-90s and Hip-Hop was shifting away from its Afrocentric phase and moving into becoming a heavier cultural presence in America and across the globe. Hip-Hop fans saw the surging and focused lyrics from rappers in the East, while G-Funk was enjoying a prominent period in the west.

George Jackson is also a hero of mine. I read his 1970 book Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson when I was around eight years old. My mother, not at all an activist, did her best to instill Black pride in my sibling and I, and this book helped. To hear Jackson’s name via a music form I love more than any other, it was transformative. Adding to that, Cee Knowledge consistently “dropping jewels” — placing Five Percent terminology and themes in his rhymes — brought the whole project home.

Then, Mecca proved she was no slouch lyrically, sometimes outshining her two male musical partners. It is fair to say that my fandom of Blowout Comb easily makes it a personal classic and one of my favorite pieces of art ever created. I must end this here because I feel compelled to walk you through every emotion I’m feeling and there’s a lot to cover here.

And I still don’t know what a creamy spy is.

Blowout Comb
was released on October 18, 1994, just as Fall was taking hold on the East Coast. The group’s debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), was a Jazz-inflected breezy affair that was pushed to the forefront of the industry on the heels of its huge smash hit “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like That),” which earned the trio a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The follow up was an abrupt shift in sound. Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving best known as Cee Knowledge, and Mary Ann [Khalilah-Azraa Vieira] “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, all sharp rhymers with distinct styles, saw their voices sunk deeper into the mix to the point one would need to lean in to catch every reference.

From the onset of the album, the opening track “The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug” set the tone early. Mecca leads the song’s chorus and potent opening verse:

One time for your mind/Two times for Mumia, Sekou/Three times for my Brooklyn dimes/Seven times for pleasure/I don’t trip, I don’t trip/We don’t trip, nah we don’t trip/We don’t trip, please don’t trip/We don’t trip, pleasure/

Now, sixteen times for the mind thieves/For my thinking Intel, I am Erica/Counterfeits don’t stop the wettest of us/We Brooklyn we define the black people equal to who, yeah/What you supply/I know when I know when I drop dip/That was in beetle’s but a snake try to spill a score/On my pride I’m in my Cammy/We bust at COINTELPRO we creamy like/F*ck that we Creamy Spies tell you scheme-y lies/We let our creamy bullets fly/Should it reflect the sun/We say yes when we think of gettin’ dipped/We says guess say yo comrades rest

The presence of unabashed Black pride was blunted somewhat by the warmness of Ish, Mecca, and Cee Knowledge clear-eyed if subdued vocals, which matched against some of the energetic production, it shouldn’t have worked considering Hip-Hop’s aggression during this period. But it succeeded according to many critics during its initial release.

The album’s lead single, “9th Wonder (Blackitolism),” was a reintroduction. If fans and critics were expecting “Cool Like That” part two, they were in for a shock. The video for the single is cinematic, showing a much Blacker Brooklyn than what exists today. Ish strolling through the borough as he ascends to the graffiti-tagged Dean Street MTA station stop, complete with his afro boldly picked out complete with a Black pick, remains just as resonant today as it did then.

As strong as Ish and Cee Knowledge’s verse were, Mecca’s closing verse also highlighted something that was sorely missing in Hip-Hop then and just correcting itself now: Black women featured as prominent fixtures of the culture. At the end of Mecca’s verse, her call and response with DJ Jazzy Joyce was a pleasant rarity as their routine and Jazzy Joyce’s focused cutting and scratching take the song out.

None of the members of Digable Planets were natives of New York. Ish hailed from Seattle, Wash., Cee Knowledge was from Philadelphia, Pa., and Mecca was raised in the Washington suburb of Silver Spring, Md. Ish and Knowledge met in Philadelphia, while Knowledge struck up a kinship with Mecca in Washington when he attended Howard University. Knowledge also crossed paths with some members of Washington, D.C.’s Hip-Hop elite in the late Father Lord of Actual Facts, better known as Tha Beggas, and that connection is made known several times over the course of the trio’s two releases.

Brooklyn, then, similar to Baltimore with The Wire, is just as much a character or group member on Blowout Comb. The transplants voiced pride in living in the New York borough, to the point one would believe that the group’s formative years were spent there. Production on the album also figures heavily in how the project should be absorbed, shifting between dusty looped samples and live instrumentation so seamless that it is hard to tell when the shift from man to machine happens. There is also the heavy influence of the Black Panthers and straight-up Black nationalism. Again, this may have been the last gasp of Afrocentrism in Hip-Hop on a grand scale, and it never once felt overbearing.

Headphone Hip-Hop isn’t an official team, far as we know, but if it were, Blowout Comb would be the shining example of it. With the muted deliveries from the group, the panning of vocals, and the aforementioned murkiness of the mix, repeated listens will uncover new treasures over time. In comparison to the clean mixes of modern-day Hip-Hop, audiophiles will spend more time picking apart the auditory flaws instead of experiencing the moment.

The years have been kind to the songs the members wrote when they were wide-eyed yet talented twenty-somethings. After mending their professional rifts and exploring creative endeavors outside of what made them notable artists, Digable Planets have reunited and are delivering their sound to crowds around the globe.

Blowout Comb is Black, bold, and Brooklyn beautiful. Still. And if musical art of high quality and value truly does live forever, it will always remain as such to anyone who approaches the album.

Peace.

Anniversary: 1978 – 2018 Live In Hyde Park London (Live)

The Cure

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: October 11, 2019

At 8pm on Sunday 9th July 1978 in the rocket, a small smokey pub in Crawley Sussex, The Cure performed their very first show. Around 65 people joined in the fun. At 8pm on Saturday 7th July 2018 in Hyde park, a big green space in London, The Cure took to the stage to celebrate 40 years of playing live. Around 65,000 people joined in the fun. To capture this second historic event in all its technicolour glory, the band turned to the man responsible for most of The Cure’s iconic videos, as well as their award winning 1986 film ‘in orange’ – long-time collaborator and maverick director Tim Pope. The performance Tim Pope filmed that perfect summer evening was one of the most memorable concerts of The Cure’s long career; as giant sized screens danced, glitched and fizzled with images of raging seas, shimmering webs and broken hearts, The Cure flowed, floated, pushed, pounded and powered their way through a 29 song 135 minute spectacular, on a spellbinding trip through four decades of alternative popular music. Says pope: “I went to rehearsals in a very cramped studio just the day before the show, and sat in the group’s midst as they ran through the songs. I knew as the set list unfolded that the only way to show people the real cure was to capture not only the grand, epic dimension of their stage show, but also the close, intimate side of this band simply making music together. Never has Robert sung so well, nor has the cure played more passionately, more tightly, more powerfully.” As the film was edited together across the ensuing months, smith and pope working closely together, Cure FOH sound man Paul cornett, who had mixed the show live on the night, was brought in to help Robert create the accompanying soundscape. Mixing took place at Brighton electric studios in late 2018, final tweaks to the theatrical 5.1 audio being carried out at abbey road studios in early 2019. As with the 4k visuals pope had snared with his cameras, the aim was to create a totally immersive experience for cinema-goers. Looking back near the end of the show, Robert says to the audience “if you’d asked me in the rocket what I’d be doing in 40 years, I would have got the answer very wrong… but it’s thanks to everyone around me, and to you all as well that I’m still here… so thank you very much! It’s been a good four decades… here’s to the next one!” In march 2019 smith and the rest of The Cure – Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell and reeves Gabrels – were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, announcing exciting news later that same night about the progress of the group’s first new studio album in more than a decade. “Anniversary 1978-2018” was and is The Cure drawing a quite remarkable line between their past and their future.

Sentaler Unveils 10-Year Anniversary Campaign

Bojana Sentaler has achieved a milestone with Canadian luxury outerwear brand Sentaler.
On Thursday night, the designer celebrated the brand’s 10-year anniversary at the EY Tower in Downtown Toronto, where she unveiled the Sentaler X campaign with Canadian model Danielle Knudson and revealed the launch of men’s outerwear.
“To be celebrating 10 years is incredible,” Sentaler said. “The current collection for fall 2019 is the largest collection to date with a lot of references to previous styles and accent colors. Coats that were in fashion 10 years ago are still in fashion today. It’s really nice to see how diversified the collections are and can be worn by so many different women.”
A few of the different women Sentaler is referring to include British royals Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle and Canada’s First Lady Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, who have been spotted in the brand in recent years.
“One of the key reasons for the high demand is the fit,” Sentaler said. “It’s really important to me that the coats have a high visual appeal, but at the same time are very functional and comfortable.”
Sentaler launched the outerwear label in 2009 after meeting Karl Lagerfeld in Dubai. He encouraged her to follow her childhood passion

On October 16, 1992, New York City's hottest concert ticket was the live gathering of musical giants, legend and archetypes who'd come to Madison Square Garden to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Bob Dylan's first Columbia Records album and play a selection of Dylan songs—from culturally iconic (John Mellencamp's no-nonsense "Like A Rolling Stone") to bootleg obscure (Lou Reed's acerbic take on "Foot of Pride")—that had moved and inspired them over the decades. The four hour show, performed for a sold-out audience of more than 18,000 fans and live-cast around the world, brought together an unprecedented roster of artists and icons including Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, Lou Reed, The Clancy Brothers, Ritchie Havens, Johnny Winter, Roger McGuinn, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Stevie Wonder, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Ron Wood, Chrissie Hynde, The O'Jays, Eddie Vedder, Sinéad O'Connor, Tracy Chapman, George Harrison (then making his first US concert appearance in 18 years) and more. Providing musical backing throughout the show was an ensemble dream team featuring three members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s, G.E. Smith on guitar with Jim Keltner and Anton Fig on drums. Dubbed "Bobfest" on stage by a jubilant Neil Young, the 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration reached a transcendent crescendo with an unforgettable performance and all-star jam featuring the evening's honoree. Viewed anew from a 20-year perspective, Bob Dylan – The 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration – Deluxe Edition is a remarkable testament to the enduring legacy and ongoing musical influence of Bob Dylan. That valedictory gathering from more than 20 years ago proved to be a mid-career retrospective of a recording artist and performer who continues to inform and transform the cultural landscape.

LOUD Records 25th Anniversary Concert To Feature Wu-Tang Clan, Three 6 Mafia & More

10th Annual ONE Musicfest

Source: Paras Griffin / Getty

Though Def Jam, Death Row and Bad Boy were considered the 90’s biggest and baddest Hip-Hop record labels, real heads know that LOUD Records was responsible for dropping just as much classic material (if not more) as the aforementioned companies. To celebrate its 25th Anniversary, LOUD Records will be throwing a OG star-studded concert on October 11 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ dubbed LOUD Twenty-Five.

Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, Big Pun, and Xzibit are just a few names that the house that Steve Rifkind and Rich Issacson built. They helped push the rap game forward and the sounds that they created still reverberate in the culture to this day.

Slated to feature performances from LOUD alumni such as the Wu-Tang Clan, Three 6 Mafia, Mobb Deep (R.I.P. Prodigy), dead prez, Pete Rock, and a Big Pun tribute courtesy of Fat Joe and Remy Ma, the concert event is poised to become a night to remember for the heads who lived Hip-Hop’s golden era.

Steve Rifkind perfectly summed up why this concert means so much to him.

“This celebration means the world to me,” said Rifkind via a press statement. “LOUD was born out of a love for hip hop and a childhood fantasy. To see it grow into one of the most iconic and storied hip hop labels in history and having the opportunity to celebrate with our amazing artists 25 years later leaves me speechless about our journey.”

Get tickets to the OG Hip-Hop concert of 2019 at Ticketmaster and let us know if you’re looking forward to partying like it’s nineteen ninety-something once again come October 11.

Oscar de la Renta, Saks Fifth Avenue Partner to Mark Save Lake Tahoe’s 50th Anniversary

When models walked the runway at the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s fund-raiser in 1969, they were barefoot on a beach.
“It was raw,” said Saks Fifth Avenue’s president Marc Metrick, of the original setting. “It was fashion at its core.”
Held at a Rubicon Bay beach house on the lake, the function began as a collaboration between the late Bill Blass and Saks Fifth Avenue’s James J. Ludwig, a vice president and general manager of the retailer’s San Francisco branch at the time. Along with Eugene Levin, owner of Maurice Rentner (Blass was its designer), they took notice of Bay Area customers vacationing in Lake Tahoe for the summer and relocated their habitual fall presentation, usually held in August, to the Sierra Nevada area.
“It moved from a fashion show with boxed lunches — literally, there were boxed picnic lunches — to an involved community event,” continued Metrick.
What started as an intimate show has evolved into a significant production that has raised $ 1 million this year and a total of more than $ 18 million for programs dedicated to the protection and preservation of the Lake Tahoe Basin. The affair, which now showcases Oscar de la Renta designs, celebrates its 50th anniversary this weekend.

TALENTS ON SHOW: To mark its 10th anniversary, Vogue Talents, Vogue Italia’s fashion talent scouting project, will be celebrated during the upcoming Milan Fashion Week with an exhibition at Brera’s Palazzo Cusani, running Sept. 20 and 21.
The exhibit will include the creations of 70 designers who in the past 10 years were involved in the program, which was founded in 2009 by the magazine’s late editor in chief Franca Sozzani and Sara Sozzani Maino, currently head of Vogue Talents and Vogue Italia deputy editor for special fashion projects.
“Vogue Talents was created to support the new generation of creatives at a time when few people believed in talent,” Sozzani Maino said. “It’s borderless and barrier-free, and it searches the world, because there’s talent everywhere. Our mission going forward is to act responsibly and set an example that the world needs to change.”
The list of designers scouted by the team of Vogue Talents includes names such as Jonathan Anderson, Aquazzura, Giannico, Paula Cademartori, Arthur Arbesser, Simone Rocha and Bethany Williams.
In keeping with the 10th anniversary celebrations, some of the aforementioned designers will explain the role that Vogue Talents had in the development of their careers with short movies which will be posted

Donnie Darko: Anniversary Special Edition

Richard Kelly

Genre: Sci-Fi & Fantasy

Price: $ 3.99

Rental Price: $ 4.99

Release Date: January 19, 2001

Fifteen years before Stranger Things combined science-fiction, Spielberg-ian touches and 80s nostalgia to much acclaim, Richard Kelly set the template – and the high-water mark – with his debut feature, Donnie Darko. Initially beset with distribution problems, it would slowly find its audience and emerge as arguably the first cult classic of the new millennium. Donnie is a troubled high school student: in therapy, prone to sleepwalking and in possession of an imaginary friend, a six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him the world is going to end in 28 days 06 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds. During that time he will navigate teenage life, narrowly avoid death in the form of a falling jet engine, follow Frank’s maladjusted instructions and try to maintain the space-time continuum. Described by its director as “The Catcher in the Rye as told by Philip K. Dick”, Donnie Darko combines an eye-catching, eclectic cast – pre-stardom Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, heartthrob Patrick Swayze, former child star Drew Barrymore, Oscar nominees Mary McDonnell and Katherine Ross, and television favourite Noah Wyle – and an evocative soundtrack of 80s classics by Echo and the Bunnymen, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran. This brand-new 4K restoration, carried out exclusively for this release by Arrow Video, allows a modern classic to finally receive the home video treatment it deserves.

London’s Fashion and Textile Museum Celebrates Liberty’s 140th Anniversary With the Exhibition “Liberty in Fashion”

liberty of london

Rewind to London, 1875. The style of the moment favored bright aniline-dyed gowns whose rigidity required mechanical nips and tucks through corsetry. But then, as now, trends change, and eventually the fashion pendulum swung back the other way. Among those who welcomed the change were the Aesthetes, an alternative set of 19th-century Londoners who valued art for art’s sake. Fixtures of the movement included Oscar Wilde, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and the Pre-Raphaelites, with London-based Liberty at the forefront of Aesthetic dress.

While Liberty is an apt name for a label whose followers were thought to be liberated from the cult of fashion, it also happened to be the surname of Arthur Lasenby Liberty, who founded the company in 1875. Subscribing to Arts and Crafts principles, Liberty designs flouted tight lacing and the trickery of naturalistic patterns in favor of free-flowing gowns and textiles printed in flat patterns and rendered in two-dimensional repeats. The brand became famous for Japonisme-inspired prints of peacock feathers and sunflowers in muted colors borrowed from nature.

This year marks the 140th anniversary of the storied house, which has kept up with the times via ties to fashion designers including Paul Poiret, Mary Quant, Jean Muir, Yves Saint Laurent, and Vivienne Westwood. Beloved today for its ditzy floral prints, the quintessentially British brand is the subject of the exhibition “Liberty in Fashion,” opening this weekend at London’s Fashion and Textile Museum.

Above, we celebrate 140 years of the label with a look back at Liberty’s best and brightest moments in Vogue.

Ralph Lauren Heading to Althorp to Mark Pink Pony Anniversary

GRAND DESIGNS: Downton Abbey isn’t the only British stately home on Ralph Lauren’s radar.
Later this week, the brand will head to Althorp, home of the Spencer family for more than 500 years, for a black-tie dinner to mark the 15th anniversary of Ralph Lauren’s Pink Pony charity.
The dinner, on Oct. 8, will be hosted by Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl Spencer, and Andrew Lauren. Lauren, a filmmaker and a son of the company’s founder, is the face of the Purple Label men’s campaign, which was shot at Althorp.
A women’s wear presentation will take place in the Picture Gallery, before dinner in the Marlborough Room.
Spencer is the younger brother of the late Princess Diana, and Althorp, in Northamptonshire, England, has been the family’s home for 19 generations. It is surrounded by 13,000 acres of parkland, and Diana is buried on the grounds of the estate.
Pink Pony benefits cancer research and the Royal Marsden hospital in the U.K. Founded in 2000, its mission is to raise cancer awareness and support programs for cancer screening, early diagnosis, treatment, research and patient navigation.

Kanye West, Rihanna & A$AP Rocky Attend Vogue 95th Anniversary Party [Photos]

Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2016 was lit with who’s who’s yesterday thanks to the Vogue 95th Anniversary Party.

Kanye West was the HNIP as he was surrounded by his family, Kris Jenner and her boyfriend, Corey Gamble and his sister-in-law Kendall Jenner. Also in attendance was Pretty Flaco himself, A$ AP Rocky, Rihanna, The Weeknd’s model girfriend Gigi Hadid, newlywed Bar Refaeli, Oscar winner Jared Leto and the gorgeous Zoë Kravitz.

Emmanuelle Alt, the editor-of-chief of the longstanding publication, is being showered with praise for not throwing a snobbish snooze fest as she reportedly told the famous attendees, “All I wanted to do tonight was have a big party. I’ve been to so many fashion events that were, oh no—so many boring fashion parties. Tonight is about fun, and friends, and dancing.”

Barack And Michelle Obama Celebrate 23rd Wedding Anniversary

President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary on Saturday.

The two were married on Oct. 3, 1992, at Trinity United Church in Chicago. A year later, Michelle apparently forgot the couple’s first wedding anniversary.

Over time, Michelle has said that she has learned to forgive some of the president’s habits.

“What I’ve come to find is, you don’t sweat the small stuff,” she told Ellen DeGeneres in March. “The journey that we’ve taken together, the fun we’ve had, the challenges we’ve faced, the two beautiful children that we’re raising — I kind of give him a pass now when he leaves his socks on the floor or tells that story for the one hundredth time and wants us to laugh at it as if we first heard it.”

Happy anniversary!

Rochas Celebrates Its 90th Anniversary

NINETY CANDLES: To help celebrate its 90th anniversary this year, Rochas hosted an exhibition including vintage fashion, fragrance and advertising and a party on Wednesday in its soon-to-be-open new headquarters at 1 Rond-Point du Champs-Élysées in Paris.
“It all goes with the global intention of the brand to really push it forward and to make it much more visible,” said Stéphane Lemonnier, fashion and accessories director at Rochas.
On display were some pieces by Marcel Rochas, the label’s namesake designer, as well as creations by Peter O’Brien, Olivier Theyskens, Marco Zanini and Alessandro Dell’Acqua.
One room specifically devoted to fashion included 28 looks — dresses, pantsuits and even pajamas — shown alongside accessories and perfume. Especially in keeping with the birthday theme were a few pieces bedecked with swallow imagery from Rochas’ fall 2015 show, which marked the label’s 90 years with the print inspired by the house’s 1934 collection.
Lining the walls next door were copies of ads dating back to Rochas’ start. Kicking that off was an image from 1925, a black-and-white drawing depicting the entryway to Rochas’ headquarters framed by two fir trees.
There was also the 1936 campaign for Les Parfums Marcel Rochas framed with a colored rectangle, which originally appeared on

RZA Honored At PETA’s 35th Anniversary Bash [Photos]

Yesterday evening (September 30), the Wu-Tang Clan’s leader RZA was honored for his years of disciple within diet at PETA’s 35th Anniversary party.

The event, which was hosted by Pamela Anderson and Anjelica Huston and featured exclusive performances by Grammy Award-winning icons Sir Paul McCartney and Beck, took place at the Hollywood Palladium.

“I would like to thank PETA for honoring me with a Humanitarian Award. It’s an award that does not aim to reflect my art—it instead reflects my heart. With the abundance of … alternatives, I don’t think it’s mandatory to kill animals in order … to thrive and survive. And, more importantly, it’s definitely not mandatory to kill each other,” the Hip-Hop legend and longtime vegan said after accepting his award on stage.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is the largest animal rights organization in the world and focuses its attention on the safety and well-being of animals through public education, animal rescue, celebrity involvement and protest campaigns. Even if you can’t commit to the RZA’s lifestyle, they still offer various vegan recipes that get solid reviews.

Check out the pictures of RZA getting his shine on at PETA’s 35th Anniversary, as well as several attractive celebrities such as Carrie Ann Inaba and Christen Press.

Istituto Marangoni Continues 80th Anniversary Celebrations in Milan

Fashion and design school Istituto Marangoni continued its 80-year birthday celebrations here on Tuesday night with a runway show and exhibition at The Mall in the new Porta Nuova business complex. Curated from four international satellite schools across Milan, Paris, London and Shanghai, the “80th Anniversary Back to the Roots Celebration” paraded 96 spring ready-to-wear looks from 16 graduates of its three-year undergraduate courses.
The show honored the inaugural campus established here in 1935 by Giulio Marangoni, which over eight decades has grown to five campuses, most recently a School of Design, which opened here in January 2014. Currently, more than 3,500 international fashion students from 106 countries study undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses on design, styling and business.
In an adjacent hall, the “Degree Show” exhibition illustrated student projects from 2014-15 courses on interior design, product design, fashion design and fashion styling through clothing and accessories displays.
Milan-campus graduate and winner of the “Fashion Warrior”-themed show, Lu Huiyang, will continue with a master’s degree next month. “The teachers here taught me how to turn my ideas into reality using precise techniques,” she said about her collection of cocoonlike Neoprene dresses with woven rubber houndstooth panels. Giorgio Armani Autobiography Mark’s Company’s 40th Anniversary

MILAN — “I’m a man who gets things done, not one who just talks about them — a man of action, not of celebration or, worse still, self-celebration.”
That is how Giorgio Armani describes himself in his new autobiography, which is being released during his company’s 40th anniversary year. Published by Rizzoli, the book, simply titled “Giorgio Armani,” will be presented Sept. 28 at a press conference following the designer’s signature runway show and will hit stores the next day.
A range of both unpublished and well-known images by international photographers such as Craig McDean, Aldo Fallai and Peter Lindbergh are juxtaposed with the concise yet revealing text written by Armani himself.
“I’m focused and controlled, but behind the iciness is a hot-blooded and sensitive personality. I have learned to protect myself, otherwise the world might have taken advantage of me,” the designer writes. “I’m introverted and reserved: I have always preferred my studio to parties and social events and, even today, I’m still the first to arrive at work in the morning and the last one to leave at night. I have found a way to not be overwhelmed by the indispensable performative side of my work: I have surrounded myself with

The Big D: Marking a Strange Anniversary

There’s a joke that goes something like this:

Why is divorce so expensive?

Because it’s worth it.

Ha.  Ha.  Ha.

I recently marked the anniversary of the longest, strangest day of my life: the day I went to family court to have my marriage dissolved.

Even that term seems strange. Dissolved. As if our union was solid and real prior to entering court, then magically swirled and separated into tiny particles that simply disappeared.

If only it were that simple.

I was wearing the dress I’d intended to wear to my wedding rehearsal dinner years earlier. That dinner had been canceled because Hurricane Irene forced us to bump our whole carefully-planned wedding up by 36 hours. It’s a thing friends and I have since joked about — that if even Mother Nature objects to your nuptials, maybe you ought to take the hint.

That day in court, though, nothing was a joking matter. I had to face a courtroom full of strangers and answer intimate questions about my marriage and how it all went fabulously to shit.  I suppose that’s not exactly how my attorney phrased it, but that’s what I heard. I went into defensive mode. I didn’t feel it all went fabulously to shit. I felt that much of the time it was all pretty damn good — lots of love and happy times — but something important at the core of it went quietly, insidiously to shit. Did I not get to explain that? Should these voyeurs not at least be required to hear the full story?

It seemed not.

Worst of all, there was my husband — very, very soon to be my ex-husband — sitting next to his lawyer, somehow looking to me just like he did on our wedding day.  Handsome and stoic and uncomfortable in his button-down shirt.

I lost it.

In front of all those strangers, I dissolved into a shaking, blubbering mass of jelly.  I’m pretty sure I looked like this:

2015-09-11-1441936306-6209496-AliceCooper.jpg

Do you need time?”  the judge asked.

A voice barked sharply: “No. I need this to be over.”

It was me.

Snapping at the judge.

Luckily, it seems if you are forty-ish, wearing a rumpled sundress, flapping your hands like the wings of some deranged bird and sending mascara down your face in rivulets reminiscent of Alice Cooper circa 1973, you get a pass on some things, even in court. The bailiff handed me water, which my shaking hands promptly spilled everywhere. The judge and attorneys waited for me to pull myself together. I dried my eyes and looked at my husband, who was looking carefully at the ceiling.

Ultimately, the divorce was granted, and The Ex and I did what any newly-divorced couple would do.

We went fishing.

Yeah.  Not kidding.  I kind of feel like when it comes to the whole Conscious Uncoupling thing, we out-Gwyneth-ed Gwyneth Paltrow on this one.

With no children — named after fruit or otherwise — we still decided to at least try to replace a negative experience with a positive one.  We went out on the boat (his boat, by court decree) and drank beer (his beer, because, well, we’d filled the cooler from what was now his fridge) and cast lines into the water.  The fish never bothered us.

At some point, it began to irritate me that we were out on the water enjoying a gorgeous summer day as we had so many, many times before.  As if we hadn’t just been granted an “absolute divorce” by one stranger in a room full of them.  Seven years together.  Seven months apart.  One hour and fifty-three minutes in family court, and it was done.  I tried talking politics, hoping for an argument that would remind me of why we separated in the first place.  But The Ex wasn’t taking the bait any more than the fish were.

So we just took the boat out into the chop outside the harbor.  I love choppy seas.  I always want to go as fast as possible, while The Ex generally prefers to take it slow.

“Go fast,” I said.

The man who wouldn’t look at me in court turned to me and smiled.  It was the thinnest, saddest smile at first, but it grew. He leaned on the throttle and aimed into the whitecaps.

And I felt the smile creep back onto my own face as well.

News in Brief: Department Of Homeland Security Not About To Raise Alert Level For 14th Anniversary Of 9/11

WASHINGTON—Explaining that the preventative measure was totally unnecessary, Department of Homeland Security officials announced Friday that they were not about to raise the country’s alert level for the 14th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. “Let’s be honest, if groups like al-Qaeda or ISIS were planning an attack to coincide with the anniversary of 9/11, they would choose one of the big ones like the fifth or the 10th, not this one,” said Department of Homeland Security secretary Jeh Johnson, adding that as far as symbolically meaningful anniversaries go, the 14th “doesn’t even come close.” “Trust us, when 9/11 rolls around again next year the threat level will be through the roof, but we should be fine today. If you’re going to worry about anything, it should be the big 2-0 coming up in 2021.” Johnson later confirmed that a large-scale attack on …

Jessica Simpson Brand Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

A decade in, Jessica Simpson’s label has evolved into a $ 1 billion lifestyle brand at retail, and the company has aspirations to double — or even triple — volume in the next 10 years.
Part of the route to this lofty goal includes new product lines, such as activewear and another fragrance developed especially for the decade milestone. Yehuda Shmidman, chief executive officer of Sequential Brands Group, which acquired a majority interest in the Jessica Simpson brand in April, pointed to several avenues of growth potential for the label.
“There’s growth outside America,” he said. “We’ve already had interest from several parties [for freestanding stores]. We also see certain pillar categories for the brand, such as activewear. And there are some other channels for growth, such as e-commerce and mobile commerce. We’re looking at all different ways to get the product into the hands of her customers.”
While the business has an extensive wholesale component, the e-commerce and mobile platforms need to be built. As for international options, the company hopes to capitalize on footwear’s distribution base in 55 countries. Sequential is considering markets in which it should enter or expand, and the right operating partners for various regions. Shmidman said interest has

My One-Of-A-Kind Anniversary Gift For Robin

In honor of our 39th wedding anniversary, I’ve created a “mixtape” for Robin. Check out some of our favorite songs, and what they mean to us. Then, listen to the entire playlist on Spotify! Hope you love it, Robin!

  • Abba: Take A Chance On Me
  • Phil Collins: Easy Lover
  • Elvis Presley: Can’t Help falling In Love
  • Dorothy Moore: Misty Blue (Robin’s favorite)
  • Seal: A Change Is Gonna Come (I find inspirational, almost gospel!)
  • Four Tops: Ain’t No Woman (Like The One I Got) (I mean, really! I married way over my head!)
  • Everclear: AM Radio (Nostalgic!)
  • George Strait: Amarillo By Morning (We both love this one. It was released at a time that I was traveling almost nonstop, so I really related.)
  • Four Tops: Baby I Need Your Loving
  • Ronan Keating: When You Say Nothing At All (Like a lot of couples, it really describes our bond and ease of being together without having to flap our mouths all the time!)
  • Led Zeppelin: Whole Lotta Love (Me, an old rocker at heart!)
  • Mel Carter: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (OK, a little sappy but have you seen her up close?)
  • Michael Bublé: Home (Speaks to the road warrior in me. Like Dorothy said, “There’s no place like home!”)
  • The Mamas & The Papas: I Saw Her Again (Just my vibe)
  • Dionne Warwick: Walk On By (First full-blown concert I ever attended. Incredible voice and experience. Will never forget it.)
  • Cher: Believe (This whole album dropped right when I was launching the Dr. Phil show, and I played it EVERY MORNING in my office before walking over to the stage. EVERY MORNING!)
  • Kid Rock: Only God Knows Why (Except for “the pills,” it was like he read my mind!)
  • Buffalo Springfield: For What It’s Worth (Race riots KC, high school)
  • George Thorogood & The Destroyers: Bad To The Bone (Every guy’s secret fantasy self-image! HA!)
  • Smokey Robinson: Cruisin’ (What Robin and I did AND to this song. Too broke to do anything else! Now, we have the honor of calling Smokey a friend! How surreal is that?)
  • Tina Turner: The Best (Inspirational to Robin, and now we have the honor of calling HER a friend! How blessed are our lives?)
  • Brooks & Dunn: Neon Moon (Our dear friends Ronnie and Kix, and one of the all-time great songs in any genre! LOVE IT!)
  • Janis Joplin: Piece of My Heart
  • Redbone: Come and Get Your Love
  • Anne Murray: Snow Bird and Could I Have This Dance (These 2 songs accompanied Robin in the wee hours of the mornings when she was up feeding and rocking Jay when he was first born. So peaceful and so soothing. Robin recently has become friends with sweet Anne and loved telling her this story of such a loving time in her life.)

Jeezy Brings Out Kanye West, OutKast, T.I. & More At Epic ‘Let’s Get It: TM 101′ 10th Anniversary Concert

Saturday night it was history celebrating history as Atlanta belonged to Grammy nominated star Jeezy. He performed to a sold out house at the iconic Fox Theatre (the show sold out day it went on sale) and the crowd, who rapped all of the lyrics with him, showed love to their city’s own in an incredible way. As he was celebrating the 10 year anniversary of his classic debut (on a major label) album, Thug Motivation 101, he was joined by his friends to help him celebrate.

Performing the classic album in its entirety, Jeezy also wanted to remind the crowd that he has other huge hits. He ran through a string of classics, including “I Do,” with Andre 3000 joining him on stage, “Love In The Club,” with Usher on stage, “Put On” with Kanye West joining him on stage and more. Other artists who graced the stage included Big Boi, Mannie Fresh, Lloyd, Bun B, T.I. and Lil’ Scrappy. There was even a Boyz N Da Hood reunion! Almost all of Atlanta showed up and showed out in celebration of Jeezy’s 10 years of success. ATLiens brought the house down! Other celebs who came out included Monica, Da Brat, Jermaine Dupri and more.

Jeezy kicked off his 10th anniversary weekend with a private dinner to honor his accomplishments as well as relaunch his charity, Street Dreamz Foundation, on Friday. The dinner brought out everyone from the Mayor of Atlanta to other artists and key influencers. Mayor Kasim Reed gave Jeezy the highest honor a city can give. On Saturday morning, Jeezy and Street Dreamz Foundation organized a community event to help clean up a neighborhood in the 4th District. Check out photos from the classic concert below. To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary and its enduring ability to scare audiences both new and old, Dark Sky Films proudly presents THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE in an all-new 4k digital transfer and with a newly created 7.1 surround sound mix supervised by Tobe Hooper. 2 Chainz, Sa Roc And Others Prepare For 20th Anniversary Of The Million Man March

Rappers like 2Chainz, Sa-Roc and others have opted to join Minister Louis Farrakhan’s massive rally in Washington D.C. to mark the 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March. This is not a celebration though, as the theme of the movement is deemed “Justice Or Else.”

The march is slated for October 10, 2015.

Farrakhan has met with a number of notables over the last year as instances of injustice and police brutality have increased. There have been images with Dame Dash, Ice Cube, Young Thug, Sway, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian on social media and traditional media.

In this promotional video, #JusticeOrElse gets shout outs from 2 Chainz, Ezzy, Lil Bibby, Palo Mula, Bone Crusher, Kaleena Harper, and Sa-Roc.

The original Million Man March convened over a million men (and others) that gathered peacefully on the National Mall in D.C. The march focused on personal atonement, social and societal ills, economic empowerment and the negative portrayal of African American men in media outlets.

Many Black women were upset that they were not included in the plans. The Justice Of Else rally includes all races, genders and others who opposes injustice and systemic wrongdoing .

McFly document their recent show stopping 10th anniversary celebrations at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall. Across four incredible sold-out nights, the band – Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd – performed their greatest hits and exclusive tracks with their trademark showmanship, verve and personality. This film captures the excitement and energy of those shows and also includes their incredible, headline-making collaboration with ex-Busted members James Bourne and Matt Willis. Highlights across the release include a debut performance of ’Love Is On The Radio’, the first single from McFly’s forthcoming sixth album, while the main set each night ended with a specially-written musical number performed by Tom entitled ’McFly The Musical’ – telling the story of the band in his own inimitable, humorous style. One of the major talking points of the shows, one kept secret all the way up to opening night, was the ’McBusted’ team-up. Each night McFly were joined onstage by former Busted boys James Bourne and Matt Willis to perform the latter’s huge hits ’Year 3000’ and ’Air Hostess’ as well as McFly’s own ’Shine A Light.’

Gola Toasts 110th Anniversary in L.A.

A KICK IN L.A.: U.K. sneaker brand Gola is coming to California to celebrate its 110th anniversary with a pop-up shop at Fred Segal Santa Monica and a party on Friday night. The brand, which has been distributed in the U.S. for a decade, recently set up its own distribution Stateside, along with a Nordstrom partnership. “From a U.S. point of view, our distribution has been much more East Coast so we’re looking to branch out in the West,” said Gola president Tony Evans. The pop-up, which will be open for four weeks, will feature a museumlike installation of the brand’s print advertisements and greatest moments in soccer — or football — history. “A lot of new brands come along every week or every month it seems, but to have a heritage is a great U.S. play for us,” said Evans, who noted that Gola’s classic styles Harrier, Comet, Quota and Equipment have been trending strongly here. The men’s Made in England collection will launch exclusively at Fred Segal, while Barcelona retailer Limited Editions will collaborate on three styles to celebrate the anniversary.

Simple Minds Celebrates The 30th Anniversary Of ‘The Breakfast Club’ At Billboard Music Awards

Thirty years ago, while cooped up in Saturday morning detention, a group of teens learned that people categorize one another in certain ways, and discovered that each one of them is a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

Earlier this year “The Breakfast Club” celebrated its 30th anniversary and at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night, the film’s star Molly Ringwald introduced the band Simple Minds to perform their 1985 hit song “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” which plays in both the opening credits and final scene of the movie.

The band got the crowd singing along to the 80s hit and it looked like Ringwald, who joked about wanting to be in Taylor Swift’s club, got her wish:

Pringle’s 200th Anniversary Retrospective Opens in Edinburgh: Queen Elizabeth II, Grace Kelly Memorabilia, and More

Pringle of Scotland

Little known royal fact: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has received a piece of Pringle of Scotland knitwear every year since 1947, when she was but a 21-year-old uncrowned Princess—and every year, she’s sat to write them a thank-you letter from her desk in Buckingham Palace. Royal links and Pringle sweaters stretched to the House of Grimaldi too: Princess Grace of Monaco was a major fan of the house cashmere, passing many of her sweaters down to her daughter, Princess Caroline. Grace is seen wearing one of her many favorite twinsets in a snap from her private photo album; she’s captured in a morning-after moment, looking over her own wedding photo in 1956. Fashion curator Alistair O’Neill has gathered all this memorabilia—it includes a photo of a sweater with a Corgi on it, made for Princess Anne—to trace the history of 200 years of one of the world’s oldest brands. It’s all in “Fully Fashioned: The Pringle of Scotland Story,” an exhibition which opened at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh last night.

With the British general election coming up and Nicola Sturgeon, the firebrand leader of the Scottish National Party cutting a swathe through male opponents in televised debates, the spotlight on Scotland hasn’t been as intense since, well, anyone can remember. Pride in its manufacturing heritage is part of that: The cashmere-makers of the tiny town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders have reached the world with their inimitable products, and, as this exhibition suggests, played a surprising hand in women’s long march toward liberation from Victorian times into the 20th century. O’Neill’s research shows how Pringle’s original remit as a manufacturer of fine-gauge hosiery and underwear gradually developed until elements of the style migrated into the design of supple, knitted long-line jackets around World War I, a move which is at least contemporaneous with Coco Chanel’s first use of jersey, or maybe a shade before. The upshot? The softness of cashmere knits gave women the ability to move and be active, a freedom seized on by the first women who invaded the all-male enclave of the Scottish golfing world in the twenties, enthusiastically swinging their clubs in their Pringle of Scotland argyle sweaters.

This long history—which comes bang up to date with an Aran knit incorporating 3-D-printed panels by current designer Massimo Nicosia—is spliced with many illuminating sidelights on fashion. One of them is a filmed ballet composed by Michael Clark’s company which shows Pringle’s twinsets and several pearl necklaces being put through avant-garde paces, all the better to demonstrate knit in movement. And what’s the connection with Clark? Well, he’s a proud Scot, too, of course.
