IN HER HONOR: Iman will be the third recipient of the Franca Sozzani Award, which recognizes women who stand out for their artistic careers and their social commitment.
Starting her career as a pioneering model in 1975, Iman has developed skin-care collections designed for women with skin of color and has been involved in humanitarian work for The Children’s Defense Fund, Action Against Hunger and the Raise Hope For Congo campaign. In 2010, she was recognized with the CFDA’s Fashion Icon Award.

The Franca Sozzani Award was established by the family of the late Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani.
Salma Hayek was the second recipient last year, following Julianne Moore in 2017.
The event will be held on Aug. 27, ahead of the 76th edition of the Venice International Film Festival, running Aug. 28 to Sept. 7. The ceremony will take place at Sozzani’s favorite Belmond Hotel Cipriani, a five-star hotel on Venice’s Giudecca island, and it will be hosted by Sozzani’s son, photographer and film director Francesco Carrozzini, who established the award, and his wife Bee, daughter of Anna Wintour.
“Iman’s work has disrupted the fashion industry in a way similar to Franca’s: bold, innovative and inclusive,” said Carrozzini. “Using her platform

Viola Davis Is First Black Lead Actress To Win Emmy Award [VIDEO]

Well it’s about time. Tonight (Sept. 20), Viola Davis became the first Black lead actress to win an Emmy award for her performance on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder

Davis started her moving acceptance speech by quoting Harriet Tubman.

“In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely glowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line,” she said. “I can’t seem to get over that line.”

She added, “The only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity,” to a round of applause.

Davis beat out actresses including Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Claire Danes (Homeland).

Also winning an Emmy award tonight was Uzo Aduba for her portrayal of “Crazy Eyes” on Orange Is The New Black.

Needless to say, the Internet reacted with plenty of celebrities giving their kudos. See below and on the flip.

Victoria Justice Presents Teen Choice Award To Her ‘Doppelgänger’ Nina Dobrev

In case you needed proof that Victoria Justice and Nina Dobrev are two different people, both actresses were in the same place at the same time at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday Night.

Justice, 22, presented Dobrev, 26, with the award for Choice TV Actress, Sci-Fi/Fantasy for her role on “The Vampire Diaries,”and introduced her as “my doppelgänger, Nina Dobrev.”

Dobrev hugged her lookalike, and after removing an oversized pair of fangs from her mouth, she gave an emotional speech thanking fans for the award.

“As this chapter of my life comes to an end, I look back on it with a grateful heart and a big smile,” she told the crowd. “Just like my character Elena, I started this show as a young girl. … These were six incredible years I’ve had the pleasure of spending with all of you guys.”

D.L. Hughley Slanders Caitlyn Jenner & Her ESPYS Award [VIDEO]

The 2015 ESPYs will be one to remember for years, mainly because Caitlyn Jenner stole the show by taking home the Arthur Ashe Courage Award.

Not everyone agrees with the athlete formerly known as Bruce Jenner’s newfound social role for fame and D.L. Hughley is one of them. The comedian turned political pundit shared his thoughts with TMZ on the situation and they were as candid as they come.

D.L. Hughley thinks it’s absurd the legacy of Arthur Ashe lives on in Caitlyn Jenner, who simply “put on a dress.”

Hughley was in NYC Thursday and was as clear as he could be … it’s a travesty that the ESPYs passed over Lauren Hill (the college basketball player who passed away this year from cancer) in favor of Caitlyn.

The comedian didn’t stop there, trashing the way Jenner looks, comparing her to a Robin Williams character.

And D.L.’s incredulous that members of the media dare to describe Serena Williams as man-like when, as he puts it, Caitlyn looks like a P.E. teacher.

“In a Mrs. Doubtfire type of way.” Bruh…

Watch Hughley give his two cent on the Caitlyn Jenner ESPYs award below.

ESPY Host Joel McHale Responds To Criticism Of Caitlyn Jenner’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award

There’s been some serious backlash to ESPN’s decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, but that doesn’t bother ESPY Awards host Joel McHale.

The comedian and host of “The Soup” told HuffPost Live on Wednesday that he’s been asked a lot about Jenner’s award in the run-up to the ESPYs, which will air July 15, and he only has words of support for the Olympic legend and new transgender icon.

“There’s no time limit, I don’t think, on when you’ve accomplished something athletically for this award. Obviously it’s very controversial. People have very strong opinions about Caitlyn Jenner. But I think being the most famous American decathlete is a massive achievement, and there’s no doubt — some people don’t think it, but I think it’s courageous what she did,” McHale said.

And controversy aside, McHale added that he’s got more pressing concerns about his own job at the ESPYs.

“People are constantly asking me, ‘So, what do you think of [the award]?’ I’m like, ‘I didn’t decide this. I’m hosting the show. I’m just hoping the jokes land. That’s all I care about,'” he said.

Kelli O’Hara Receives “Our Leading Lady” Award for 15 Years On Broadway (VIDEO)

2015-06-12-1434133235-5861471-KelliSteve2.jpg

By Steve Schonberg; Video Producer: Meredith Ganzman

SCROLL DOWN TO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AND SEE KELLI RECEIVE THE “OUR LEADING LADY” AWARD!

On Sunday, June 7, famed Broadway actress and fan favorite, Kelli O’Hara (who I profiled here, last year) was finally recognized by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing for her remarkable contributions to the stage, taking home her very first TONY Award following a total of six nominations over several years.

In the weeks leading up, fans took to social media with a fervor, debating who exactly should win for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical. Many were in “Camp Kristin” for Chenoweth’s outstanding performance as Lily Garland in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of On The 20th Century. Others rooted for theater legend Chita Rivera and her performance as Claire Zachanassian in Kander and Ebb’s final musical, The Visit (which Rivera has said will likely be her final role on Broadway).

However, the support for O’Hara was fierce, and her fans were ultimately vindicated on TONY night as she received the award for her stunning and complex performance as Anna Leonowens in the Lincoln Center revival of The King and I.

Weeks before the TONY Awards, our team at Center On The Aisle (#COTA – the website I run in addition to contributing here on The Huffington Post) was also split, but peace came by acknowledging exactly what this incredible recognition represents. All three of these women were frontrunners, and deserved to win for different reasons. However, if the TONY Awards have a weakness, it’s that other than its Lifetime Achievement awards, they celebrate only a single performance–not the performer’s body of work and total contribution to the art form.

Realizing this, our team did a little research and found out that this year did not just bring Kelli her sixth nomination, her performance in The King and I marked a total of 15 years on Broadway, and her 10th Broadway show.

To acknowledge this, the #COTA team (with the help of a special celebrity guest included in the video below!) decided to take matters into our own hands and recognize Kelli O’Hara for all of these incredible performances (whether she won the TONY Award or not), which collectively have made her one of the most recognizable and talented actresses on stage today.

Check out the video below to see me present Kelli with Center On The Aisle’s first ever award, titled “Our Leading Lady.”

Why We Should Award Courage

It could not be more fitting that Caitlyn Jenner will be receiving the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at this year’s ESPYs, as the internet continues to both praise and debate what it means to have a beloved Olympian come out as a trans woman. I can’t help but smile thinking about how apropos and fitting it is that Caitlyn receives this award.

Growing up as a black person in this country, Arthur Ashe was always a role model for me. An outspoken, talented and smart black man who confronted the inequality in our world. Silence is violence, and those who speak up not only spark change, but go down in history as leaders for future generations to look up to and aspire to be. Black kids, much like trans kids need adult leaders telling them that there is a life meant to be lived.

Camera, Arthur Ashe’s daughter, is my oldest and closest friend. When I came out years ago as gay, she didn’t bat an eye. Years later when I came out as trans, the exact same occurred. Our friendship has not only withstood the test of time, but also been tightly bound by unequivocal acceptance. Knowing now, as a happily out trans person, that Caitlyn is being given an award in her father’s name is truly love and advocacy coming beautifully full circle. As the young black kid who admired her father, words can’t express what it feels, as a young black trans man to see an out and proud trans woman receive an award in his name. We are all truly so much more alike than we will ever know and when we take the time to connect the dots, we are so much closer to those who seemed the farthest.

Arthur Ashe became a tennis megastar, in a time when Apartheid still existed, a time where no black man before him (or after him) had won a Grand Slam, and a time when our country was still reeling from decades of segregation.

The fight for LGBTQ equality has always mirrored in many ways, the movements prompted by racial disparity. As we approach an age where gay rights are no longer being seen as a radical fight but instead a humane and righteous step for our country, transgender folks often find themselves left out of the rally cry.

Slowly the media has begun to embrace those who are transgender as equals. Granted, those we do see are often flawless and gorgeous examples of femininity, the presence of Janet Mock and Laverne Cox in the mainstream is incredibly important for trans visibility.

Caitlyn Jenner was setting world records in the world of track and field whilst Ashe was crushing his competition in the tennis world. We didn’t know then that the former was a trans woman, or that the latter would lose his life to AIDS, another crushing common bond shared with many in the trans community, as black transgender women have the highest percentage of new HIV-positive test results.

Our country has seen the bloodshed of far too many blacks just as our country has seen the bloodshed of far too many trans people. When we put into place systems of hate and continually perpetuate them with wrongful facts in the media what often results is the loss of lives and the erasure of groups of people. This is why we need the Arthur Ashe’s of the world, this is why we need the Caitlyn Jenners.

Somebody Give This High Schooler An Award For Her (Fake) Harvard Rejection Letter

The “Harvard rejection letter” that went viral earlier this week? Yeah, it’s fake. But you should still read it.

Molly McGaan, the letter’s author and a student at Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, wrote the cheeky piece of satire for her school’s humor publication, “Citizen Poke,” and it viral — for obvious, hilarious reasons:

fake harvard rejection letter

The letter purported to come from the Harvard College Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. It regretfully informs Ms. McGaan her application, which rested on a solid foundation of “proficiency in ‘dank memes’” and a respectable level of “$ wagg moneyyyy,” wouldn’t be enough to earn admission despite a solid GPA and test scores.

“We also suggest obtaining recommendation letters from teachers or trusted mentors,” the letter advises, “not ‘my #4 side ho Derek’ or Chief Keef, who submitted a picture of a dinosaur drawn in crayon on a rolling paper.”

McGaan told The Huffington Post she was inspired to lighten the load of applying to schools.

“I’ve had a lot of friends … really stressed out about college admissions,” McGaan said, “and I just wanted to make some people smile.”

She said she never expected the letter to resonate so much outside of her friend group. But it clearly has, racking up millions of views across Reddit, Tumblr, Facebook, and elsewhere since she posted it to the Citizen Poke Facebook page on Tuesday.

“To me it was just this very juvenile little joke that I wrote,” she added. “I couldn’t believe it got picked up so fast. I write this magazine at my school, and the most amount of ‘likes’ [a story has had on Facebook] before this was about four.”

The 18-year-old has actually applied to Harvard, and is slightly concerned the tongue-in-cheek letter may harm her admissions odds. School officials told The Boston Globe they have indeed seen McGaan’s handiwork, but declined to comment further.

“People legitimately think it’s real, which is so bizarre to me.” McGaan told the Globe. “It’s just so insane.”

McGaan doesn’t expect to hear back from Harvard for another couple weeks. Thankfully, the stress of admissions season doesn’t seem to have affected her sense of humor:

Upcoming Award Show — Honoring Celebrities: Film and Television

Question: What do science fiction, fantasy and horror have in common? Answer: they are the genres honored annually, for the past four decades, by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films.

2014-06-11-Saturn_Award_Groupsmaller.JPG

On June 26th, actors, filmmakers, and a whole host of other entertainment professionals and artisans will gather in Burbank, CA, to celebrate their capacity to engage you in intergalactic war, have you hobnobbing with kings, dragons, hobbits, and zombies, transform you into some alternate life form, get you chewing your fingernails down to little nubs, or simply scare the pants off of you … and do it all with your unequivocal, enthusiastic consent!

To the uninitiated, this could sound like a whole lot of fanfare and purple prose … in which case, may I suggest you take a few days and immerse yourself in some of the films and television shows which are on the Academy’s slate for its coveted Saturn Award. Some of these include: Gravity, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Pacific Rim, Game of Thrones, Falling Skies, Carrie, The Conjuring, The Place Beyond The Pines, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Blacklist, and Under The Dome.

The lineup of directors, actors, and actresses is no less impressive, including such luminaries as J.J. Abrams, Alfonso Cuaron, Kevin Bacon, James Spader, Peter Jackson, Guillermo del Toro, Jessica Lang, Halle Barry, Sandra Bullock, Emma Thompson, Mia Wasikowska, George Clooney, Ben Kinglsey, Harrison Ford, Bill Nighy (I have a particular soft spot for him!), and Scarlett Johansson.

The complete list of nominees can be found on the Academy’s website.

Honoring entertainment industry greats from both television and the silver screen, from studio productions as well as independents, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films takes its nomination cues from the public. Yes, nominators and voters must be members, but the Academy’s membership is still open to the public, thereby affording fans the opportunity to voice their opinions and be champions for their heroes. In addition to that, members get to attend about 130 screenings and numerous special events each year.

The Academy was founded four decades ago by a man who adored the genres which, with each new film, pushed the envelope right over the edge and stretched the imagination beyond its breaking point so it could transport its fans into worlds and experiences so extraordinary, that they all but defied definition or explanation.

Fearing that those genres, particularly horror, might never garner the attention they deserved from the Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes, Dr. Donald A. Reed founded the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. He wanted the films he felt so passionate about, and all the people and faces behind them, to receive the recognition they so richly deserved. And now they do.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Reed, the Academy’s Award Ceremony is now celebrating its 40th anniversary, with a list of past honorees as brilliant as that of any Academy red carpet, including Vincent Price, Rock Hudson, Lon Chaney Jr., Leonard Nimoy, Steven Spielberg, Burgess Meredith, Nicholas Cage, George Lucas, James Cameron, Peter Bogdanovich, Rod Serling, Robert Downey Jr., Boris Karloff, Nathan Fillion, Mel Brooks, Gene Roddenberry, Ray Bradbury, and Frank Darabont.

(Darabont I especially enjoyed when met him at the 2009 Saturn Awards ceremony … spending about 15 or 20 minutes talking about, of all things, fuel cells, hydrogen generation, and alternative energy! Of course … what else would you discuss with a three-time Oscar-nominated director at a film and television award show?!)

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Robert Holguin, the Academy’s CEO and president. Through his efforts over the past several years, the independent filmmaking community’s contribution to the entertainment industry is now an integral part of the annual Saturn Awards event, accounting for approx. 40 percent of the nominees. “There’s a lot of talent that can be found in independent film,” he told me, “Because they have more freedom to work outside the box, they can bring something to the screen that’s more original.”

And if anything is likely to have a good shot at being original, it’s something in the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Horror genres. Who could ever forget Jack Nicholson’s terrifying and incomparable “Here’s Johnny!” in The Shining? And, as Holguin also pointed out, “Who would have ever thought a show about zombies could be so successful?”

Clearly, the public has gone way beyond ‘ready for it’; they are demanding it – greater quantities, higher quality, superior intellect, and further and further out of the box each year. Isn’t that just fantastic!
