Zac Posen Shuttering Business

Fashion has another major casualty: Zac Posen. The designer is shuttering the business that he founded in 2001.
“Horrible.” “Pretty intense.” “Surreal.” Posen thus described the closure in a conversation with WWD on Friday afternoon. “We had to close up House of Z, Z-Spoke, the whole company,” he said.
The decision came today, a move Posen called “surprising and immediate.” Employees were informed this afternoon. The company will cease operations immediately, and the spring collection Posen showed in September will not be shipped. “The board made a difficult decision,” he said. “We were in a sale process and we ran out of time.
“There was a board vote. We had to make the call,” Posen continued. “My partners and I tried everything possible within our means to find solutions to keep it going. I have been trying to find the right strategic partners at this tough time in retail and in the industry. The clock ran out.”
As reported in April Yucaipa Cos., Ron Berkle’s investment firm, which has owned a stake in the brand for more 15 years, was looking to sell. According to Posen, there had been discussions with several potential buyers, but ultimately noting came to fruition. “I’ve been trying to

Anne Barge Celebrates 20 Years in Bridal Business, Readies to Launch Little White Dress Collection

NEW YORK – Anne Barge celebrated its 20th anniversary Thursday with a New York fashion show and a one-night retrospective, and creative director Shawne Jacobs is planning for the company’s next chapter.
A graduate of the American Intercontinental University in Atlanta, she joined the company in 2001. In 2012, during a trip to one of the company’s factories in China, Jacobs and her husband learned of Barge’s succession idea. “She saw us really working together as a team. Me working as creative director designing for the brand and my husband running the financial side of it,” Jacobs said.
For Thursday night’s Anne Barge runway show, gowns from the namesake’s archives were reimagined to infuse new elements to some traditional and classic styles. The result led to architectural designs made with Italian Kalika and allover floral Alençon laces for more feminine accents. There were also tulle designs with 3-D textures and metallic floral embroidery. To give brides-to-be more youthful options, the company offered jumpsuits, bustiers and illusion necklines.
Having attended its first bridal market in China in July, the company aims to build sales in China, which is not overflowing with Western bridal designers. In addition, brides in China typically wear four or five different

7 Strategies To Launching A Matchmaking Business

In conclusion, one of the most efficient and proven methods of launching a new matchmaking business is to build critical mass, which is a size, number, or amount large enough to produce a particular result. Once you reach critical mass by offering free memberships initially, you have many opportunities to up sell your members based on what they need and what they might be interested in. The best marketers use the 1-2-3 approach where they offer a free membership, then a small up sell and then a larger up sell. Its a funnel, whereby the largest pool of members will be free, then a smaller pool will up sell and even smaller pool will reach the final up sell. There is no limit to up selling members once you figure out what they need, what they want and what they are willing to pay for. Impress them with a free membership and give them the very best service for free and they will gladly up sell for additional products and services.

Versace Provides Travel Kits for Turkish Airlines Business Class Intercontinental Travelers

VERSACE FRESHENS UP: Duty-free shopping in airports can be a blood sport for harried travelers who tend to fall into two camps — killing time or crunched for time.
Turkish Airlines travelers can skip the last-minute blitz for moisturizer, lip balm and other in-flight sundries, since the carrier will be providing them with travel kits from Versace or Mandarina Duck. Business-class passengers taking intercontinental flights will get the Versace assortment. Female fliers will find socks, earplugs, a sleep mask, warning stickers, Versace lip balm, hand lotion, facial mist and a hair clasp all contained in a zippered orange case. The men’s version is slightly different and is stowed away on a black case. To keep the pearly whites intact, there are travel-size Colgate toothpaste tubes as part of the deal.
Staying squeaky clean is truly in fashion, as evidenced by Naomi Campbell’s viral “airport routine” video, which was filmed on a Qatar Airways plane. More than 1.4 million people have watched the five-minute spot on her YouTube channel. The supermodel breaks out her pre-packed plastic gloves to scrub down her business class surroundings, “cleaning anything that you touch or could possibly touch.”
Turkish Airlines isn’t just offering its business-class passengers some special pampering

Mia Becar Launches With Direct-to-Consumer Business Model to Sell Footwear

SURE-FOOTED: The direct-to-consumer footwear company Mia Becar is up and running.
The West Hollywood-based company was started by Betzabe “Betsy” Gonzalez and Carolina Lujan. Aiming to establish repeat customers, Mia Becar will offer monthly drops of capsule collections to try to keep shoppers coming back. The shoes retail from $ 575 to $ 875. “We thought this was the future of a luxury shoe brand. We want to keep the brand fresh. We also wanted to be able to control our message and our story.”
Gonzalez and Lujan were both born in Mexico and they studied shoe design and graduated from Arsutoria School in Milan in 2017. Their debut collection was inspired by the Golden Age of Hollywood and features such looks as D’Orsat pumps, peep-toe mules and stiletto booties.
Married to former New York Mets player Adrian Gonzalez, Betsy has lived in different cities over the years due to his Major League Baseball career. On the road, she noticed a need “for brands that supported noble causes, elevated women and held themselves to the highest standards.” Motivated partially by the belief that “good shoes simply make life better,” she and her cofounder Lujan visited numerous factories in Italy before starting their Italian-made footwear brand.

Zimmermann Expands Its Resort Business With Boutique in Capri

CAPRI — “You have to be physically fit to work in fashion. The pace is frenetic and it’s a lot of work.” Nicky Zimmermann, cofounder and creative director of Australian women’s brand Zimmermann, confessed during an interview on Friday in Capri, where the fashion label organized a two-day event to mark the opening of its first store on the chic Mediterranean island.
Despite her busy schedule and the frequent trips from her native Australia to other countries, the designer revealed she enjoys her working life. “Having fun is so important for us. I’m so lucky that I work with my sister [the brand’s cofounder, Simone Zimmermann] and my husband [the company’s chief executive officer Chris Olliver] and we truly enjoy what we do,” Zimmermann said.

The brand made a name for itself with its signature feminine, colorful and lively take on ready-to-wear and swimwear. That touch was translated into the brand’s new store here, designed by Australian architect Don McQualter of Studio McQualter. The boutique is located on a pink building on Via Vittorio Emanuele, the island’s beating heart a few steps from the legendary Piazzetta square and the luxury Quisisana hotel, the 764-square-foot boutique.

Welcome To Reality: Rihanna Says She Experiences Racism During Business Deals

In news that’s right up there with the sky being blue and water being wet, Rihanna believes that even she has been a victim of racial prejudice. Go figure.

Reports Page Six:

In a profile in the upcoming issue of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, the pop star, 27, opens up about what it was like being made aware of her race after moving to the US from her home country of Barbados when she was still a teen.

“You know, when I started to experience the difference — or even have my race be highlighted — it was mostly when I would do business deals,” she tells interviewer Miranda July.

No one cared about the “Bitch Better Have My Money” singer’s race when it came to performing. And while some may attribute the change in attitude that she noticed to her age at the time, Rihanna made clear that it’s something that continues to this day.

“And, you know, that never ends, by the way. It’s still a thing,” she said. “And it’s the thing that makes me want to prove people wrong. It almost excites me; I know what they’re expecting and I can’t wait to show them that I’m here to exceed those expectations.”

For the record, they probably did notice Rihanna race when it comes to performances—there is nothing wrong with acknowledging it—because the powers that be were strictly thinking about the money to be made. To think racism only happens when business is at hand is just plain naive.

Let us know what you think in the comments.

Who is the Better Business Person – Trump or Fiorina?

The common wisdom goes like this:

1. Fiorina ruined HP and Lucent totally by herself yet made a fortune in CEO pay. Therefore, Fiorina is bad at business. She only makes money for herself, not the stockholders. Also, she eats employees and poops them out.

2. On the other hand, Donald Trump is a successful entrepreneur across several lines of business. Therefore, he is the better business person.

But then you say…

3. “But what about Trump’s four bankruptcies? His partners lost money!”

Then someone with more than ten minutes of business experience says…

4. Trump had a diversified portfolio of holdings. Some were guaranteed to be better than others. So he did the smart thing and created separate entities that could fail individually, just like any stock investor with a diversified portfolio. Plus, banks and investors require that sort of separation as a requirement for funding. There really wasn’t a second way to do it.

But then you say…

5. “I saw a calculation that said Trump would be richer now if all he did was invest the tens-of-millions he got in inheritance in stocks. So he must be bad at business.”

Then I say…

6. Trump’s successful run for the presidency (if he succeeds) will make the Trump brand ten-times more valuable by the time he leaves office. The presidency is an investment for Trump in ways it would not be for anyone else. Becoming President, should it happen, makes the Trump brand valuable in perpetuity whereas otherwise it might have withered after his passing.

After you hear that last point, perhaps you think Trump is a far better business person than Fiorina. All she did was ruin HP and Lucent. At least Trump built some businesses and created jobs, even if several of his ventures could have worked out better.

Now I will convince you that Fiorina is Trump’s equal in business, as far as we can tell.

For starters, both Trump and Fiorina are capitalists operating within the rules of the system. The point of capitalism is to maximize your own gain, not the gain of your customers or your stockholders. We like to happy-talk about how everyone is in it as a team, but capitalism only works if we all know that to be a lie. The system works best when people pursue an enlightened selfishness that understands how things work. Here I am not judging capitalism; I am simply describing it.

So, by the standards of business, and the rules of capitalism, Fiorina elbowed her way to the top of two enormous companies and walked away richer each time. That is an A+ performance under the rules of capitalism.

Was Fiorina’s management bad for shareholders and employees? Maybe. But since we don’t know how another CEO would have performed in each of her situations we are left to imagine it. And then we confuse our biases with reason.

There’s a reason that science demands a control case. Without the control, test results have no meaning. Yet we think we can judge Fiorina’s job performance without a control. If there is no control, it ain’t science. And if it ain’t science, it is just guessing.

I know I haven’t changed your mind about Fiorina’s business skills yet. But I’m not done either. I was saving my best point for last.

I call this move The High Ground Maneuver, and by now my regular readers are alert to this method of persuasion. Watch how powerful it is even though I pointed out my method in advance.

— The High Ground Maneuver —

I say…

Every seasoned business person knows that failure teaches you more than success. Trump has had plenty of failures. He knows what they look like, he knows how to manage risk, and he knows how to recover.

Likewise, Fiorina has been in the corporate cage-fights for years. One assumes she picked up some skills because – in case you haven’t noticed – she shook off all of that bad press from HP and Lucent and made herself a legitimate contender to lead the largest economy on the planet.

Is Fiornia bad at business? Maybe. But the scoreboard (her bank account and her surge in the polls) say otherwise. That is the only objective data we have. To say more would involve imagining how things would have gone at HP and Lucent without Fiorina. And your imagination is not evidence.

I say Trump and Fiorina are both super-hardened by failure. Both are at the tops of their games, and both are serious contenders for the presidency. Given the data at hand, if you don’t see Trump and Fiorina as equals in terms of business skills, you might want to have a talk with yourself about gender bias.

If you would like to learn more about how companies can extract value from failure, read The Other F-Word, by John Danner and Mark Coopersmith. They teach at Haas School of Business (Berkeley), where I got my MBA long ago. Now I work with them in the Berkeley start-up ecosystem.

My book takes a similar view on failure, but in the context of the individual.

In Top Tech Blog, whenever I see a story that says science has figured out a way to “mimic a spleen,” I get worried that the rest of my body will become worthless too. The spleen is like the canary in the colon. It always goes first.

The Braid That Means Business: Proenza Schouler’s Strict Single Plait

proenza braids

Individuality seems to be the word on the tip of everyone’s tongues backstage at New York Fashion Week this season, which is exactly why Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez decided to offer a refreshing counterpoint to the undone, come-as-you-are beauty that’s been ruling the runways. “They were looking at images of Frida Kahlo and documentary photos of Cuban women. Braids were a consistent theme throughout all of the pictures,” explained hairstylist Anthony Turner of the last-minute decision to fasten each model’s hair into a slick, substantial single plait.

This being Proenza Schouler, of course, there was an urban twist in store: Turner gathered the models’ hair at the nape of the neck in a strict low ponytail, before tightly weaving it into a thick, flat braid. A homemade effect that Turner characterized as “a bit screwy” came at the hands of Bumble and Bumble Thickening and Prep sprays instead of a hairbrush. Instead, he was raking his fingers through it to create a messy, rough center part: “We wanted the hair to feel a few days old,” he said. “She knows she’s amazing. She doesn’t care too much.” The final effect was a gutsy Cuba-by-way-of–New York City braid that elongated the neck, showcasing the fashion house’s new dangling earrings and high-collared silhouettes and offering up a fresh confidence. Or, as Turner put it with a twinkle: “She means business.”

Only six models with short curly hair were left that way, including newcomer Shelby Hayes, who was discovered just two weeks ago in Orange County, California. Just yesterday, Turner shaped her shoulder-length Afro into a tomboyish crop. “It’s really cute,” said Hayes, feeling her new short lengths with a smile. Standing out from the crowd has never sounded easier.

Cole has redesigned its logo and Web site, will launch a multimedia ad campaign called “Courageous Class,” has elevated its women’s and men’s sportswear and accessories offerings for fall and will open a new prototype store on Bond and Bowery on the Lower East Side of Manhattan on Sept. 15, which incorporates both omnichannel strategies and social initiatives benefiting the neighborhood.
In a recent interview at the company’s headquarters, founder, executive chairman and chief creative officer Kenneth Cole and chief executive officer Marc Schneider described what prompted the rebranding of the business, which generates $ 1 billion in retail sales worldwide across all licenses and product categories.
Cole said he had an epiphany a few years ago and decided that “in an effort to revitalize and re-energize and make the company relevant again, that we needed to make some significant changes.” It became apparent, he added, that all the things the brand needed to be doing, it couldn’t do as a public company.
“You can’t do it in a public arena

Trump Excels at Business, But He Has No Business in International Politics

Listening to Donald Trump’s egotistical take, you’d think his loud business personality translates perfectly into international politics. Mexico acting up? No matter; he’ll hop on the phone and curse Mexico out. China spiffing us in trade deals? Who cares! A solution is a phone call and an immature insult away. “Your country sucks, China!” Problem solved.

Except while that might work on TV, it would backfire in reality. As several commentators have already pointed out, Trump’s “refusal to act diplomatically [would be] catastrophic for the lead diplomat of the United States.” Diplomacy requires subtlety, tact and restraint — something everyone from Sun Tzu to Henry Kissinger agrees on. But screaming insults like a petulant toddler? That sort of behavior is best left on The Apprentice.

I’m not saying business experience has no place in politics. It obviously does. Outsiders bring valuable insights into the political process, and a more realistic representation of how business works — stressing restraint and negotiation over needless offense — translates extremely well into international diplomacy.

But Trump’s view of how his own bombastic business personality would play in the political realm is remarkably shortsighted. He speaks of countries as if they were individuals, and he acts like solutions to complex problems lie in three-word slogans. That pithy ideology might work for Trump’s personal life, but it would spell disaster if adopted by the president of the United States. In Trump’s worldview as presented thus far, one gets the impression that Israel-Palestine can be solved by a few stern phone calls and maybe a fancy steak dinner afterwards. If that fails, then bombs should do the trick. Yeah right.

Obviously, Trump’s oversimplification of international relations has appeal. Most people don’t have the background knowledge, the patience, or the time to truly consider the intricacies of, say, the development of ISIL. As Robert Greene writes in The 48 Laws of Power, short mantras have an intrinsic draw, a resonance that longer, more nuanced takes on things just don’t have. And that’s fine — for the average citizen. But the president of the United States, wielding a governmental branch clothed in immense executive power, should have a more thorough understanding of foreign policy.

He or she should understand that illegal immigration is not a problem the Mexican government alone can control, or that empirical evidence suggests undocumented immigrants actually commit less crime than native-born Americans. He or she should acknowledge that a disgusting phenomenon like ISIL has complex political, religious, and historical underpinnings that will not be, cannot be, dismantled by a few well-placed explosives — rhetorical or military. A responsible president should know that criticisms of China and Japan for manipulating currency should be restrained and qualified, to acknowledge (for example) Japan’s two decades of careful economic policy aimed at counteracting slumping fiscal performance. And so on.

Because in foreign policy, jabs aren’t taken lightly; and unlike in Trump’s business affairs, insulting a country ticks off a heck of a lot more people than the one person on the other side of the phone line.

Business isn’t simple; foreign policy isn’t either. If Trump wants to be taken seriously by the general electorate, he should demonstrate the nuanced understanding of foreign policy exemplified by candidates ranging from Jeb Bush to Hillary Clinton.

As things stand now, the world is far too dangerous and complex a place for Donald Trump to be at its helm, his hand hovering over the nuclear button, ready to shout “you’re fired!” at anyone who ticks him off.

Political Reporters Cover a Business Candidate

The presidential campaign is being covered by political reporters, for the most part. That makes perfect sense because the subjects of the reporting are mostly politicians.

But Donald Trump is a business person. If you apply a political filter to a business person, you get nonsense. Likewise, if you have a goal-oriented view of the world, as politicians typically do, a business person with a “systems” approach would appear crazy.

That brings me to Trump’s newly-published immigration policy. For our purposes here, you don’t need to know the details. All you need to know is that it sounds totally impractical and draconian.

If you apply a political filter to his proposal, it is pure nonsense mixed with evil and flavored with crazy. That’s how the media is reporting it all over the Internet. Just like Trump planned.

If Trump were a goal-oriented thinker, or even a real politician, the reporters would be interpreting this situation correctly. They would report that Trump’s plan is ridiculously impractical and even inhumane. And they would be right.

But reset your filter for a minute. Remember that Trump is a business person who promises to bring a deal-maker to the job of President. Now look at his crazy plan again but use your business filter this time.

Trump sees immigration as a negotiation. His opening offer is an anchor. This is how world-class negotiators work. The first offer has no purpose except to create contrast to whatever you eventually agree.

For example, Trump’s plan has two ridiculous ideas that will never happen. One involves a change of the constitution to remove the right of citizenship for people born in this country. The other involves rounding up 11 million aliens and shipping them home.

Not going to happen.

If Trump were a goal-oriented thinker, or a politician, he would be setting himself up for failure. His plan has zero chance of success as it stands.

But Trump is a systems thinker. He plays the long game. Every move is a negotiation.

Trump wants a wall on the border, and he wants Mexico to pay for it. That is such a big ask that few people think it possible. I can only imagine one way a wizard with Trump’s skills could convince TWO countries to do this thing that is amazingly hard to get done.

You start with an opening offer that anchors people’s minds to the most outrageous parts of the plan and then you trade those things away until you get the only thing you wanted: the fence. Negotiators (Congress in this case) will feel that a negotiation happened and all parties met in the middle.

But only Trump decided where the middle is. The debate is already over and Trump won. We’re getting a wall. But my guess is that America will create some sort of a path to citizenship for current illegals after the wall gets built. That will make both sides feel like they won something.

Trump can’t say he will give illegal immigrants a free pass while at the same time trying to get a wall built. That would trigger a wave of immigrants trying to beat the wall construction.

There was exactly one path available for Trump to get his wall. He had to set an anchor in the negotiations that inspires his core anti-immigration crowd to vote for him while setting the stage to negotiate away the crazy parts of the plan and keep the fence.

Another way to look at Trump’s immigration plan is that he’s working on America’s branding. That’s Trump’s area of expertise. If you want your brand to have value, the first thing you do is make sure no one can get if for free. You need a sense of exclusivity. Tightening immigration does that.

Keep in mind that trump is open to legal immigration for people who bring technical skill to the country. He wants more of that and less of the criminal element. That’s hard to argue against in principle. And if he succeeds in branding America as the only place you want to work if you have tech skills, imagine what that does to the economy over time.

Bonus Thought 1: When Trump stuck an anchor in the immigration problem by calling the Mexican immigrants rapists, he also established himself as the only Republican who is talking about violence to women. Name the other Republican candidate who is out front on a gender issue. You can’t.

Bonus Thought 2: On the question of abortion, if Trump says he doesn’t understand why men even get a vote on the question of abortion he would take that issue off the table while keeping his personal views intact.

Bonus Thought 3: Much has been reported about Trump’s bankruptcies. If you view Trump as a goal-oriented thinker, those are examples of failures. If you view him as a systems-oriented thinker, he built a diversified portfolio of holdings and kept the bad ones from infecting the others by creating separate entities that could fail by themselves.

Bonus Thought 4: In all likelihood, Donald Trump will pick our next president. If he runs as a Republican, he will be picking himself, and winning, assuming he keeps going this way. If he runs as an independent he will be picking Clinton as president. There’s your republic: One guy gets to vote for President this year.

Here I’ll remind new readers that I have no idea if Trump would be a good president. In my view, all the candidates are within the realm of competence. How they might perform as president depends on what future they are paired with. For example, the best president for winning a war might be the worst one for fixing a recession. You can’t know who will be good on the job if you don’t know what the job will entail.

Ivanka Trump Discusses Fashion and Business — But No Politics, Please

With an expanding signature collection of her own, an executive role at the Trump Organization and a father who’s poking the political hornet’s nest with his decidedly non-PC style, it’s safe to say Ivanka Trump has a lot going on.
Accustomed to operating in overdrive, the Wharton grad is now suiting up 3,500 Trump Hotel staffers in uniforms she designed. Trump handles design and the creative vision for the company’s nine existing properties and four yet-to-be-opened ones in Baku, Azerbaijan; Rio de Janeiro; Vancouver, and Washington, D.C. She also serves as executive vice president of development and acquisitions at the Trump Organization. With two young children and an equally ambitious husband in Jared Kushner, the self-described “American wife, mother and entrepreneur” may represent a different sort of bold-faced paradigm in the fashion business. While that alone is something of a feat, it is not a moniker the former model acknowledged in any way during an interview last week.
Speaking about her new uniform designs, Trump very much stayed on message. While she has cheered on her father Donald’s take-no-prisoners presidential bid to her nearly 1.7 million Twitter followers and 582,000 more on Instagram, she wasn’t about to engage on political matters. “I

Christian Louboutin Adds to His Formidable Business

Why shouldn’t a tube of lipstick be so gorgeous you could wear it like an amulet dangling from a fine chain? And why shouldn’t a handbag be imbued with all the drama and sass of a cabaret performer, the flesh-toned handles kicking out of the black leather side panels like Dita Von Teese’s gams from a velvet curtain?
One has to hand it to Christian Louboutin: He thinks differently, strives for the exceptional and continues to add heat to his formidable footwear-based business.
Later this year, the Paris-based designer will introduce Rouge Christian Louboutin Lip Color to echo his famous soles — plus 37 other shades — and he’ll start shipping the Paloma bag, the linchpin model of a revved-up leather-goods range hinged more emphatically on brand codes such as spikes, animal prints and that famous red.
Unveiling the twin product volleys exclusively to WWD, Louboutin describes an unhurried, organic and hands-on approach to extending his brand and his business, embarking only on projects that feel legitimate and tickle his creative fancy.
“I take time to think,” he says over the line from New Delhi, where he flew in late July to design shoes for fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee, who opened this year’s Amazon

News in Brief: Trump Delivers Anecdote About Small Business Owner Who Isn’t Half The Man He Is

CLEVELAND—Noting that there are millions of entrepreneurs throughout the country who are in the same difficult position, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump responded to a question about the economy at Thursday night’s primary debate by sharing an anecdote about meeting a struggling small business owner who isn’t half the man he is. “Last month, I was speaking with John Perkins, a good, hardworking fellow who runs his own grocery store in Waterloo, Iowa, and who, like so many others out there, is a pathetic, small-time loser without a single shred of my business skills,” said Trump, who explained that Perkins’ recent struggles to keep his business afloat are a direct result of his incompetence and total lack of qualifications for the job, adding that Perkins’ “embarrassing rinky-dink operation is peanuts” compared to The Trump Organization. “This bozo has no idea what he’s doing. Improv + Entrepreneurship: 5 Ways Improv Makes You Better in Business

I saw my first improv show back when I was in college at Northeastern in Boston. We’d trek to the North End to catch the late night show at Improv Asylum and each time, without fail, laugh our bums off.

Fast forward 5 years, I’m living in Norfolk, Virginia and spending my days as a Head Project Manager + Writer at Your Hot Copy. At the beginning of the year, I set some goals and declared that this would be the year I took an Improv class.

Why Improv? Lots of reasons.
The players all seemed to be having an awesome time. Getting on stage and making everything up as you go seemed scary as hell, but why let fear lead?
That little whispering intuitive voice in my head was telling me to (and that voice is pretty damn smart).

Because being self-employed can be LONELY. AS. HELL. But it doesn’t have to be. Taking a class that allows you to interact with others and be silly is a brilliant remedy for self-employed blues.

Ultimately, I chose to take Improv at Push Comedy Theater because I thought it would be fun. Little did I know it would teach me all sorts of business lessons, too.

  1. Follow the fun. When you’re lost and not sure what to do next on stage, the rule of thumb is to follow the fun. And let’s be real, if you’re not enjoying your work, what’s the point of being self-employed? Figure out what would be the most fun and satisfying for you to help others, DO THAT, the money will follow.
  2. LISTEN! Hearing and listening are two VERY different things. When you’re creating scenes with other players, you have to actively listen to what your partner is saying. Imagine what you might create if you really listened to your clients. What would you be inspired to create if you were truly listening?
  3. Yes and… is the first thing you learn in Improv. When someone speaks to you on stage, you have to respond with “Yes, and…”. This sets the foundation for you to build off of what the other person said. Try this in real life– it leaves people (ahem, like your clients) feeling listened to and affirmed rather than negated. Fun fact: people who are listened to feel more valued and perceive the listener as more valuable.
  4. Stop controlling and be in control. To create an exceptional scene in Improv, you have to start as a blank slate. This means, if you step off the back line to enter a scene with the intention of being Farmer Brown, you have to be ready to drop that idea the second your partner calls you Mom. You have to be comfortable living in the unknown for a little while because ultimately, that’s what gives you the power to create an amazing scene (and life).
  5. Don’t be afraid to fail. Here’s the thing, not every scene you do is gonna be a hit. Does that mean you shouldn’t do it? Hell no. It’s ok to fail. It’s ok to be vulnerable. It’s ok if all of your ideas don’t work. The important thing is to get up and do it again. Keep putting yourself out there, keep taking chances. When you’re most vulnerable, when put it all out there regardless of the outcome, when you surrender to the vulnerability, that the real magic happens.

Why It’s None of My Business

So, unless you live under a rock and have an endless supply of food and drink there, chances are good at some point in the past few weeks you have happened upon a story about Caitlyn Jenner. I have not personally read any of these stories, but the number I have happened upon is legion. For the record, I admired Bruce Jenner when he was an Olympic athlete and I admire Caitlyn for living her truth. Folks are trumpeting the coverage this woman is getting as “groundbreaking” and a triumph for transgender people everywhere. But I perceive it a bit differently. For me, what would be “groundbreaking” is if we just left her in peace and didn’t turn her life into some kind of circus side show. Now, I do understand that Caitlyn courts the press; “Keeping up with the Kardashians” is a chapter of this person’s life I do not particularly admire…although to be fair, I have never seen it. But from my point of view, Caitlyn has a perfect right to live her life now as a woman without questions or scrutiny. I believe that her life is none of my business.

Obviously I am in minority here and know a lot of people would want to argue with me about how good it is to have “the conversation” and how wonderful it is to live an open life. These things are both true, but only up to a point. I think a big problem in society today is that we are having conversations about things that are none of our business. Case and point: a woman’s right to choose. How did this become a topic for national debate? How can it POSSIBLY be anyone’s business but the woman in question? It boggles my mind to think there are people who feel within their right to make major, life altering decisions for someone they have never met. It disturbs me to consider anyone thinks it is appropriate to legislate what is 100% a deeply personal, soul wrenching choice. A woman’s right to choose is the epitome of nobody’s damn business but her own.

Gay marriage is another subject that I believe is a non-subject. When two consenting adults decide they want to make a commitment to each other, that is none of my business. Why does anyone in the world believe they have any legitimate call to tell another person, especially a stranger, who to marry? The religious people who make ridiculous arguments for the sanctity of the institution need a serious reality check: marriage is what you make of it, nothing more and nothing less. If people still marry and divorce multiple times, get hitched in Vegas on a whim, marry for legal status in the country, marry for financial security, marry for any reason other than the nonsensical belief that God has sanctified this particular union, then all arguments about whether or not gay marriage is right or proper are off the table. When two grown people decide to marry, it is none of our business.

Not to pick on Mark Zuckerberg, but I do think Facebook along with reality TV and omnipresent phones with cameras installed in them have fooled us all a little bit into thinking other people’s business is our own. We are so up in each other’s trees, it is sometimes hard to stay grounded and maintain a healthy neutrality. As for forming opinions about other people’s business, I am as guilty as anyone. Long before the Duggar scandal broke, I was grumbling to anyone who would listen about these folks who apparently believe their genes are so superior they are out to single handedly populate the earth and somehow this narcissism makes them newsworthy. Keeping in mind I never watched the show; it’s existence so irritated me that I started to believe the Duggar’s overactive sex glands were my business, because I was forced to hear about them against my will. This leads me back to Caitlyn Jenner. There is absolutely no avoiding her, so how many people will resent her merely for that, as I did the Duggar family? The Duggar family is none of my business and I wish I had never heard of them. Bet a few of their fans are feeling the same way nowadays. Being famous for being famous is insidious and simply courts scorn. Ask Monica Lewinsky.

Familiarity breeds contempt, as anyone who is currently living their life in front of the camera knows. We used to revere celebrity, but now those idols are being torn down as we are allowed to see more and more behind the masks. This one has cellulite, that one has a drinking problem, this one’s marriage is crumbling…none of our business. But the omnipresence and unavoidability of the information makes it seem otherwise. No one and nothing is sacred anymore, and while on the face of it that may seem like progress, the reality is that we are all vulnerable to this kind of scrutiny. Those cell phone cameras mean that your hangover, your bad mood, your bad hair day all have the potential to “go viral” against your will. Victims are humiliated in their greatest moment of weakness; misguided children seeking approval are degraded in front of millions and it is all available for public consumption. Lives are being ruined for nothing. Because it really is none of our business. Live and let live could be our salvation if we could tear ourselves away from the endless news cycle. The next time you find yourself getting worked up about anything, gut check with this: is it really any of my business? I think we would all be a lot happier if we could agree that most often, it is not.

Summer Business Attire for Women: Basic Do’s and Don’ts

It’s time to focus on your summer office wardrobe as you rotate your closet and store away the heavy winter coat until next year. Though it may be tempting to relax your wardrobe when you see your office mates come into work wearing clothes that could pass for a Saturday pizza and movie date, you’ll look and feel more professional with a few updates. I recently posted my thoughts on pulling together a fresh summer business look and have a few more tips to share.

Do build your wardrobe around some key color classics. Soft colors such gray, light blue, and champagne always look smart and sophisticated. Wear a neutral color on top and a brighter bottom, or go for tone-on-tone for a sophisticated office ready outfit.

Don’t wear heavy hosiery. Put away your black tights. While they may be your signature look in winter, a heavy opaque leg covering is uncomfortable and too dark for the summer heat. If your office dress policy requires hosiery, do your homework and find a brand that is sheer and lightweight.

Do reach for a sheath dress. I love color and you can find a wide selection of professional dresses at your nearest department store. Look for options with a short sleeve. A little stretch will also help as you dash from one meeting to the next. A sleeveless dress is a good choice if your office allows your shoulders to show, but take into consideration the corporate dress code.

Don’t make skinny jeans, leggings and yoga pants a part of your daily work routine. If you work in an office where jeans are the norm at least one day a week, add a cotton tee, a blazer and a nice pair of heels. You will be ready for a client meeting, a day at the office, and an after work happy hour. Take off the jacket and enjoy the breeze on the patio of your favorite bar or restaurant.

Do accessorize. A simple top and a great necklace, or a bold purse, an interesting scarf (worn around your neck, or the strap of your purse), a statement bracelet, or some small scale earrings will add attention grabbing detail. When you have one standout piece, minimize the rest of your jewelry. A bold lipstick can do wonders for your overall look…just go lighter on the rest of your makeup.

Don’t opt for cargo pants. If your office encourages casual wear and khaki pants are the rule of thumb, steer clear from cargo detailing. Instead, look for crisp, clean lines in a quality fabric and an appropriate length. I am often asked about cropped pants in the workplace. While some companies have no policy on ankle length slacks, others are clear about their preference for a full length trouser. Another consideration is knowing how to wear a cropped pant with your body style. Some people can pull it off marvelously, while others tend to look frumpy. Experiment with different styles and various heel heights to find the look that works best on you. If you are wearing tennis shoes with your cropped pants, it’s the wrong look altogether. Athletic shoes and flip flops are another don’t.

Do try mixing patterns. If you work in a creative environment, a striped shirt with a floral skirt, or a pinstripe blue and ivory wide leg pant with a floral shirt can be both chic and eye appealing. A pencil skirt in a geometric pattern, with a polka dot cotton blouse, can create a great look when worn with confidence.

Music streaming business targets CD-crazy Japanese

A new music streaming service in Japan is aiming to make a dent in the world's second-largest music marketA new music streaming service in Japan is aiming to make a dent in the world's second-largest music market, but it could face a tough challenge from the undisputed king of the sector — the good old compact disc. While digital music now eclipses CD sales in the United States, Japanese music lovers tend to be big on showing off their disc collections — e-books have also struggled — and the industry is heavily geared toward sales of physical media. This week, mobile messaging giant Line said it was going where others including Sony and games giant DeNA had failed, with a streaming service that offers unlimited access to a collection of more than 1.5 million songs for 1,000 yen (US$ 8) a month.

The “Systems” Business Model

A typical start-up created by an inexperienced entrepreneur has about a 10% chance of success.

But if that same entrepreneur pivots, or starts a second company, the odds of the next venture succeeding jumps to about 20%. And that makes sense because you learn a lot during your first failure, and you make a lot of contacts that can be useful later.

If you go up the odds chain, an angel investor with twenty investments in different companies might have a 70% chance of doing well because of the value of diversification.

A start-up incubator does a similar thing by holding equity in a diverse portfolio of start-ups. If only one out of ten succeeds, that can be enough to make the incubator profitable.

You get even better odds investing in established companies that are part of an index fund, so long as you hold for a long time. Let’s say the odds of that working out for you are closer to 90%. Diversification always seems to be a good idea.

So I asked myself how a start-up could get some of the benefits of diversification while still keeping the advantages of being a start-up with a single focus. The answer, I hope, is a Systems Business Model.

I wrote the book (literally) on why systems are better than goals in most complex environments. Most start-ups are goal-focused. They might have one product (plus a few features) and too much optimism about market demand. That’s how you get to a 10% odds of success, or 20% if you are experienced at this sort of thing. A Systems Business Model attempts to improve those odds.

The start-up I co-founded (CalendarTree.com) might be the first example of a systems approach to a start-up. When we relaunch this summer you will see a portfolio of software solutions around the domain of scheduling, calendars, and time. We are able to quickly create solutions in this area because we developed a deep understanding of the market and the relevant technology while creating our original scheduling product. Once we had the knowledge and the technology platform in place we could add a dozen related but independent products to the upcoming relaunch. We’ll change our name to better fit the new offerings.

We have no idea which ones of the new products will capture people’s attention. When we relaunch we will solve about fifty common problems (I counted them) in the schedule and calendar field. (Note: We do not compete with calendars. Our job is to make your existing calendar more useful, among other things.)

If you ask me how we plan to make money, I’ll tell you I have no idea. But if any one of our products is a runaway hit, we will organize around it. If people like them as a package, we can work with that too. Maybe someday we will add some premium features. Maybe someday the app upgrade will cost one dollar. Maybe someday there will be an advertising component. We can go in any of those directions. We designed those doors to stay open.

Clearly this is not the kind of story you want to tell your potential angel investors. Those cats want to know the names of your first customers, see letters of intent, or know that you are already experiencing organic growth. No investor wants to hear “whatever” as part of your plan to monetize.

But “whatever” is exactly what makes a diversified portfolio of stocks a good investment. The whole point of “whatever” is that humans are shitty predictors of anything. But numbers are numbers. Diversification always seems to improve odds.

A Systems Business Model is designed to improve your odds of success even as you are failing on individual tasks and projects. Each failure increases our insight into what works and what does not in our chosen field. And you decide in advance that you will be taking a deep dive to find value. You won’t find many diamonds on the surface. Each failure makes us technically smarter and more insightful. And soon we will have diversification on our side. If you don’t feel a compelling need for nine of our solutions, you might get jazzed about the tenth.

This model obviously has big challenges for branding. But we figured out a way to make it work for us in this case. I’ll tell you more over the summer.

And obviously funding is a problem with the “whatever” story. But we’ll be fine long enough to know what we have. Maybe if the Systems Business Model works for us, investors will take notice.

Is this sort of blog post interesting? I really can’t tell.

Women in Business Spotlight: Kathryn Johann Brings Mermaids to Life

“It’s been a passion of mine to help women feel as good as possible so they can enjoy their time at the beach.” – Kathryn Johann

Buying a bathing suit is scary. Even the most confident, empowered, ball-busting corporate executive will admit it, if only to herself. It’s scary. Because unlike lingerie, which only you and possibly a significant other will ever intimately know, or a power suit that intimidates and defines, wearing a swimsuit in public is the equivalent of letting your intimacy hang out there for all the world to see in all its vulnerable glory, and to hold your head up and fake the confidence you may not necessarily feel while you try to relax at the pool or on the beach. And though, yeah, intellectually you know nobody’s really watching you or judging you or your body by what you wear, psychologically it feels like you’re frozen in a huge spotlight, especially if the bathing suit on your body is just wrong, wrong, wrong, and you’re uncomfortable in addition to being self-conscious. At least this is how it is for me.

And apparently, it’s exactly what happened to Kathryn Johann too. As an un-waifish, normal, average-sized beautiful woman, she was constantly searching for a bathing suit she just felt comfortable in, as well as attractive, and especially sexy. A bathing suit with high quality “stronger, thicker fabric” that, as she puts it, “does miracles with sucking in any flaws.” A bathing suit that had proven elusive so many times, she decided to solve this problem for herself, and she hoped for other women who were facing similar obstacles, by creating the Morada Blue swimwear line.

Islamorada, Florida, where her family keeps their vacation home, was the inspiration for the Morada Blue swimwear name, and like so many small businesses dreamed up from scratch, it started really small. Beginning with trunk shows at friends houses, and through word-of-mouth, it quickly grew into runway shows and bikini parties, eventually making its debut in swim shops in Michigan, California and Florida. It also flourishes as an online apparel store as well at moradablue.com. She plans to open her own full-scale beachwear shop within a few years.

Drawing from her formal education in art and design at Lafayette College and her studies abroad in Florence, Italy, Kathryn focuses on classic styles and slim lines with flattering accents ranging from contemporary shapes to fluttery romance for just the right touch of flair and individuality. She takes this further by selling all her suits as separates and adding cups and underwire for extra support and comfort. Her latest brainchild for this upcoming swimsuit season is her Swim Like a Mermaid campaign, where she will be doing underwater photo shoots with models that embody the spirit and joy of mermaids of the sea.

Building on the momentum the last year has brought to her business, Kathryn tells us, “I will be hosting model search events in Florida, doing runway shows and photo shoots and will be participating in a Maxim Magazine event in Miami during Swim Week [in July].” As an independent, empowered and driven woman she admits she “knew that eventually I wanted to be my own boss and start a company that I would be proud of.” Working hard and enjoying what she does with gratitude for the opportunites she’s had along the way, she doesn’t worry about or “feel stress of the competition,” seeing the work as its own reward and hoping to make even a small contribution to helping women “feel and look as good as possible.”

Mad Men: Clearing the Decks for “New Business”

In a sense, the title of the latest episode of Mad Men, “New Business,” is a misnomer. For most of it concerns old business. Yet dispensing with old business as good a way as any to get on with the new, and this episode clears the decks of much that remains from the past.

Spoilers follow.

Even with Don Draper looking for something more meaningful in the wake of his successes in casual, er, dating, the two Mrs. Drapers are set on escape trajectories beyond the orbit of Planet Don. He’s more than all right with that. An interlude with the Francis family, which aside from Republican pol Henry, is mostly Don’s, finds Betty Draper Francis brightly announcing her intent to pursue a career in psychology. See, those shrink sessions Don employed early in the series as a means to find out what was bothering his neglected trophy wife out in the suburbs are paying off again.

People enjoy talking with her, Betty brightly announces. But of course they do. Just as they always have. Where did anyone ever get the idea that Betty was a pill? Don is wryly pleased for her.

Things with the much younger and decidedly still estranged Megan Calvet Draper are more complex. Having completely eschewed the advertising career she was so good at when they first married, she’s still struggling to make it as an actress out in Hollywood. And she blames Don for, you know a lot of things, some of them fair, despite the fact that he’s been supporting her in her quest to do something he’s not interested in and would really rather she not.

Now it’s time to settle up and move on, as Don and Roger Sterling discuss. Don insists that Megan is more reasonable and down to earth than Roger’s young ex, Jane Siegel, was.

Which does not account for Megan’s formidable maman who, unbeknownst to Don, takes it upon herself to empty Chez Draper of most everything in it! This, after again pursuing, ah, rogering with Roger.

This distressing development occurs after Don, to clear everything up, decides to present Megan with a check for a million dollars and his apologies for disappointing her.

Earlier in the episode, Don pursued a relationship with the waitress we met last week who reminded him of his most intriguing past inamorata, Rachel Menken, who passed away just before Don reached out to her again. Reminded more in look than in station in life, though she does read John Dos Passos during breaks. She also attracts because she harkens back to some of Don’s hardscrabble Dick Whitman past.

Something kindles between them, but she seems as if she may be too frightened to continue. Perhaps now Don can not so much ricochet as actually move forward.

Elsewhere in the story, we dally with Peggy Olsen, who decides not to dally with a multilaterally seductive female photographer who does not fail to ensure Peggy’s old pal Stan.

And Megan suffers through a career discussion lunch with Harry Crane, who begins by extolling her utter awesomeness and ends by deriding her after she passes on his crude pass.

What, he thought it was going to be that easy? That’s our sleazy Harry, insincere and rat-like as ever, though occasionally clued in.

Not that Megan should have been too surprised. This is the fellow who, while they both worked at Sterling Cooper, regaled colleagues in the office with his fantasy of placing her legs and his shoulders.

Just four more episodes till we get to the conclusion of the “new business” to come.

This Business Model Cuts Profits To Give Poor Communities Access To Healthy Food

One nonprofit is using its expertise on bringing better foods into underserved areas to help other groups hoping to do the same.

D.C. Central Kitchen (DCCK) — an organization fighting hunger — produced a manual for other nonprofits to utilize based off of its successful Healthy Corners program. The manual — made available for free in February, according to the Chronicle of Philanthropy — provides crucial information on how the program got off the ground, why it was successful and what tactics didn’t work along the way.

The Healthy Corners program partners with dozens of local businesses to provide fresh produce and nutritional snacks to corner stores in the capital’s food deserts — low-income neighborhoods that lack grocery stores or markets.

Through the program, DCCK sells produce to local stores at wholesale prices without trying to make a profit — something other food distributors don’t do — which helps the businesses sell the food at affordable, below-market rates.

According to the nonprofit’s website, Healthy Corners sold nearly 141,368 units of produce and snacks at participating locations in the last year.

A lot can happen in a year. Our Healthy Corners program went from partnering with 29 to 68 corner store locations,…

Posted by DC Central Kitchen on Monday, December 29, 2014

“We don’t have all the answers,” Michael F. Curtin, Jr., CEO of the nonprofit, wrote in the manual. “We do have a few though, and we’ve asked lots of questions over the past four years.”

He noted that, despite what some may believe, poor community members will buy healthy foods if they have access to them.

Often, available options in food deserts consist of fast food restaurants and convenience stores offering limited choices when it comes to affordable fruits and vegetables, according to the Department of Agriculture. The department — which deems an area a food desert if it meets specific criteria concerning poverty and access to supermarkets — reports there are about 23.5 million Americans living in such communities.

Although DCCK has celebrated progress with its Healthy Corners program, research suggests advocates need to do more than simply place healthier options in food deserts, such as provide nutrition education to community members, NPR reported. That’s why DCCK offers services like cooking demonstrations and marketing support to stores — so residents understand the benefits of eating healthier and can learn how to incorporate doing so into their lives.

Oakland, California-based Food Shift is one of four groups that have taken advantage of the manual thus far, Erica Teti-Zilinskas of DCCK told the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Food Shift is partnering with other groups to create a similar program bringing healthy foods to local stores, and plans on benefitting from the DCCK manual in making its own initiative successful.

“It’s really helpful to have a model that has already done this and is working,” Food Shift Director Dana Frasz told the outlet.

House Judiciary Committee Now In The Business Of Publishing ‘Little Mermaid’ GIFs

The House Judiciary Committee posted a press release to its website in the form of a GIF-laden listicle on Wednesday.

In a departure from the traditional practice of using prose to convey official messages, the committee chaired by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) criticized President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration using quips illustrated by GIFs of celebrities gesticulating.

“Right now, one single person — the President of the United States — can turn off the enforcement of our immigration laws unilaterally,” the press release begins. “For real.”

Below that text appears a GIF of actress Anna Camp from the movie “Pitch Perfect” making an incredulous facial expression. The GIF is emblazoned with a line of dialogue from the film: “aca-scuse me?”

judiciary

The press release takes issue with Obama’s use of executive authority to allow undocumented immigrants who are parents of U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents to apply for deportation relief and work authorization in the United States. The program, which was the most important element of a set of immigration changes announced by Obama in November, has been halted by an injunction while a lawsuit against it proceeds.

A House Judiciary aide told The Huffington Post in an email that the committee is always exploring new ways of communicating its message.

“GIF op-eds are being used more and more, including here in the halls of Congress,” the aide said.

Indeed, politicians from both parties have occasionally used GIFs in recent years to illustrate policy points. In 2013, the House Energy and Commerce Committee published a timeline of the Keystone XL pipeline controversy illustrated with GIFs from “New Girl,” “Napoleon Dynamite” and more. And this January, the office of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) used Taylor Swift GIFs to explain Boehner’s opposition to Obama’s plan of offering two free years of community college.

The White House, meanwhile, recapped its favorite moments of 2013 in GIF form on its official Tumblr, and used GIFs last year to urge people to get health insurance under Obamacare.

In a reflection of the racial demographics of House Republicans, all of the GIFs in Wednesday’s Judiciary Committee press release depict white people, among them Jennifer Lawrence, Britney Spears and Steve Carell. The vast majority of the 245 House Republicans are white. Seven are Hispanic, and two are black.

Unlike House Republicans, however, the people seen in the GIFs are nearly all female. Only 23 House Republicans, or a little less than 10 percent, are women.

“The Little Mermaid” tells the story of a woman who is part fish and who longs to emigrate from sea to land. In the 1989 Disney film, the mermaid stays on land.

This post has been updated to include previous instances of government communications that used GIFs.

My Stepmother Plan Was Harder to Write Than My Business Plan

As the daughter of an entrepreneur, it was always expected that I would create my own life path. My dad would tell me that people could achieve amazing things and although I had my fair share of hurdles, by my late twenties I was happily working for myself in a rewarding portfolio career. The academic in me loved the detail and ambition of the hypotheses I set myself and I was hungry to test out my ideas. I like plans; because without a plan, how can you measure your success?

This is not a post about how becoming a stepmother changed me and taught me compromise and patience. The qualities that make me good in business were not something I was willing to be flexible on. I have high standards and I wasn’t about to surrender to a messy home with chaotic bedtimes, a lack of personal space and feeling like an impostor. I loved my boyfriend but I was very clear that I wasn’t going to be the kind of stepmother that wrote forum posts out of exasperation at her partner mollycoddling brats and kowtowing to a woman he left in order to get out from under the thumb.

It was clear to me I needed some kind of plan but here was a situation where one of the largest stakeholders in my business (aka my new family) was someone I had never interviewed, let alone approved (the ex-wife). As for the co-founder (my husband), while not without his own charms, he was unconditionally attached to the junior members (my stepsons). With the organizational chart set in stone, I was evidently going to have to use every ounce of my creativity to find a mutually beneficial structure.

Kathryn’s Stepmother Plan:

1. Vision

A stepfamily which was harmonious and loving with the same nuclear family format that I grew up in. The parents are in charge together, backing each other up on all occasions. This mutual support is based upon absolute trust that each of them want the best for every member of the family.

2. Mission

To meet the demand for a family unit which nurtures each individual whilst maintaining a focus on the overall good of the organization.

3. Objectives

3.1 Have a working culture based upon mutual respect and cooperation.

I’m something of a home girl but that means I like arranging flowers next to the sofa and curling up with a good book. I’m nobody’s maid! Everyone in the house helps out with housework but everyone gets a say. Given that my toddler can load the dishwasher, I have unwavering faith in the capabilities of my stepsons. That faith is applied to their ability to choose where we go for the day just as often as it is to their ability to put laundry away.

3.2 Enable the personal goals and advancement of each individual

As a single parent my husband would have my stepsons together. One of my greatest contributions to our family has been giving them one to one time. My stepsons are very different people and enjoy different activities. Having their father entirely to themselves has been great for both kids. It also helps them appreciate that we like our time alone as well. We do not treat the children equally but we treat them with equal love.

3.3 Develop consensus for key values

I believe the three values which generate the most happiness are gratitude, living in the moment and developing meaningful relationships. I began asking the children to list three good things that had happened to them that day when I collected them from school. At first they struggled, but now they regularly point out things to me which make them happy. While never seeking to stifle their feelings, I was a fan of ‘Let it go’ long before we saw Frozen. They rarely complain about petty things in the past these days as they hate my singing (thanks for that one Disney!). As for meaningful relationships, I listened. Hard. I learned about them and looked for interests we could share.

4. Strategies

4.1 Ownership

I believe people are happiest when they have things which are their own; projects, space, belongings. As such, I sought to take on board the opinions of my stepsons from a very young age. I cut them the slack you would an apprentice but made it clear that I expected them to take responsibility for themselves. As they grew within our new family, their tasks and rewards increased.

4.2 Leadership

My worst boss was inconsistent, overly emotional and lacked vision. For my new team I knew that these were the characteristics I would most need to avoid. I don’t always get it right (I’m not sure I ever get it right!) but I know the boys view me as fair and reasonable. I apologize when I make mistakes and I never lie to them. They respect me because I work for it not because I demand it.

4.3 Team spirit

Prior to the arrival of my biological son, we were a gang. I haven’t let that fade. I make the effort for us to do things still as a foursome such as board games that are beyond their little brother’s understanding.

5. Action Plans

The number one plan within my plan is regular meetings at both board and company level with a safe space for discussion. Topics which have been covered include the meals we eat, where we’ll go on holiday and the “intern’s” behavior (the consensus was that the baby could stay).

This plan is an utterly simplistic summary of the last six years and as my eldest stepson begins to show hints of puberty I’m certain that I’m going to have to adapt fast. But I do believe that while we cannot plan a family, we can plan our behavior within it and for now I just appreciate that I haven’t been fired!
