Google to Foster Professional Artists With Creator Labs Initiative

Google wants to align itself with creators.
The tech giant is launching Creator Labs, an incubator for professional photographers, videographers, directors, YouTubers and artists. The initiative is meant to highlight the camera capabilities of Google’s Pixel 4 phone, aka the tool with which the creators are capturing content. The program also creates opportunity for Google to be a part of current and future social and cultural conversations.
“Our goal is to commission content that’s captured on Pixel 4, both photo and video, that is grounded in social impact and cultural narrative,” said Ava Donaldson, influencer manager at Google who oversees Google Pixel influencer activations. “It goes back to the DNA of what YouTube is, which is to nurture and give a platform to people that want to create content and artists on the rise.”
Creator Labs was formed in partnership with Lens, a division of IMG helmed by Steven Chaiken that seeks to represent visual artists in a forward-thinking way.
“We look to rethink and reimagine how artists should and can be represented and how we can be nurturing and fostering their creativity in the best possible way, especially with a rapidly changing content creation landscape,” explained Chaiken. Lens, he added, consists of a

Creator of Peeple, App That Lets You Rate Other People, Sets Record Straight About Product

Do you want to know what strangers, neighbors and friends really think of you? Or what if you could rate people you like or dislike for the rest of the world to see? A new app called Peeple, slated to launch later this year, will let you do just that. Originally designed to let others rate you in the areas of personal, professional and romance — similar to the way other apps rate businesses — Peeple is making headlines and causing controversy for what some say is its potential to lead to online harassment and bullying — or even ruin lives.

Peeple’s co-creator, Julia Cordray, says, in part, that the media has overreacted to what the app actually will do, and sits down to set the record straight on Dr. Phil.

“What is it that people misunderstand about this?” Dr. Phil asks.

“With the feedback, we’ve made some really great movements toward more positivity for our app,” Cordray says. “You are not anonymous on our app, you cannot have your profile started by anybody else. You have 100 percent opt-in ability. We really want to make sure that you have full control over what goes live on our app.”

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil asks Cordray how it could have never occurred to her or her investors that this app could ruin lives. “Seriously, you went to your VCs to raise money, and nobody around the conference table said, ‘What about cyberbullying?’” he asks.

“No, that was never anybody’s concern. So you have to imagine how surprised all of us were,” she replies. “We never would intend harm with a product or app. That’s just not who we are. I didn’t really anticipate this negative attention.”

Cordray’s entire interview airs on Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil.

Tyler The Creator “Buffalo,” Run The Jewels “Oh My Darling” & More | Daily Visuals 10.2.15

If you thought Young Thug going whiteface in his visuals to “Best Friend” was pushing the envelope then Tyler The Creator’s latest video clip is a packaged bomb.

The Unabomber status visuals for “Buffalo” finds the ever socially-conscious man from Odd Future being lynched while sporting a skin pigment straight out of the movie Powder which temporarily hides a blackface to boot. Ultimately he makes his way unto a Soul Train-ish kind of program – sans the Don – where he proceeds to perform the Cherry Bomb slow jam, “Find Your Wings.”

Ty Dolla $ ign gets real American Horror Story-ish with it himself for the visuals to “When I See Ya.” Occupying a room with Fetty Wap and a few scantly clad women, Ty Dolla and Fetty do what it do while ghostly images of satin bed sheets and floating pillow feathers tell the tales that many a groupie can confirm…if they dare.

Check out the rest of today’s visuals which include work from Run The Jewels, Ne-Yo, and more.

Tyler, The Creator Calls Out Manager Who Fired Him From Starbucks

One venti-sized order of payback coming right up!

Before Tyler, The Creator hit it big with Odd Future, the rapper had two other jobs, he told Jimmy Kimmel Thursday. His job at FedEx was “so depressing” and lasted less than two weeks, but he worked at Starbucks for more than two years. According to Tyler, a new manager came in, hated on him and eventually fired him. But he had a special message he wanted her to have.

“I hope she’s watching because I still hate her,” Tyler said.

“I hate you so much,” he added.

The rapper recalled that another manager warned him 10 minutes before the firing, giving Tyler just enough time to call his mom, who wanted to sue Starbucks before she figured out they did nothing wrong. So he just accepted his fate and went on to become a mega-successful recording artist.

So, really, things probably could’ve been worse. At least they didn’t spell his name wrong on a coffee cup or anything.

Ryan Gosling Eats His Cereal As A Touching Tribute To Meme’s Creator

Ryan Gosling has finally eaten his cereal.

The actor posted a Vine clip of himself pouring a bowl of cereal and eating it. Gosling pauses briefly to raise his spoon, a silent tribute to Ryan McHenry, the Scottish filmmaker and creator of the “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal” meme who died on Sunday.

McHenry, who had bone cancer, was 27.

The meme McHenry created in 2013 features himself offering a spoonful of cereal to video clips of Gosling from his various movies, timed in such a way to make it appear as if the actor was refusing the breakfast treat.

The clips went viral, but shortly afterward McHenry noticed a painful bump in his leg that was later diagnosed as osteosarcoma. He said the popularity of the meme helped him to stay positive as he fought the disease.

A lot of my positivity has come down to knowing that I’ve got a small audience out there,” he told the Verge in 2013. “I kind of feel like I need to be positive for them. If I was on my Twitter or on my Vine being really negative, like ‘this is the worst thing ever, this is horrible,’ it just wouldn’t be nice for people to hear.”

Last month, Gosling told fans on Twitter that he actually loves cereal, prompting a joking apology from McHenry on Twitter:

Gosling’s joking response:

It was a moment made for one last McHenry meme:

Along with the Vine of himself eating cereal, Gosling sent out a message of sympathy via Twitter:

For those who took joy in McHenry’s clips and wish to contribute, a campaign has been launched in his name to raise money for Sarcoma UK, a British charity that aims to “increase knowledge and awareness of sarcoma through ground-breaking programmes to transform the landscape for everyone affected by sarcoma.”

‘I Love Lucy & Bekka’ Creator Talks Female Friendships, Diversity And Gang-Bang Porn

Standing in her bathroom, Bekka passionately belts out an out-of-tune rendition of Katy Perry’s “Firework,” while her best friend Lucy sits on the toilet trying to decide whether her roommate has what it takes to audition for “The Voice.”

And that’s just the first episode of the web series “I Love Lucy & Bekka,” which seeks to give an honest look into the friendship of two girls via snippets of the quirky conversations and small experiences that bind them together. Roommates Lucy and Bekka, played, respectively, by Kristolyn Lloyd (“The Bold and the Beautiful”) and Gina Rodriguez (“Jane The Virgin”), are the main focus of the Los Angeles-set web series, which was released in full on YouTube late last month. The twelve episodes, each only an average of two minutes in length, cover everything from the similarities between gang bang porn and “The Bachelor” to what crosses your mind when you find out via Facebook that a past acquaintance has died.

The series began through a Kickstarter campaign in 2013. The show’s creator, NYU Tisch alumna and playwright Rachael Holder, 31, needed $ 5,500 to create the series, and ended up surpassing that target. The first episode has garnered nearly 15,000 views.

Holder spoke to The Huffington Post about what inspired the web series, what makes strong female friendships so unique and how she feels about writing for a diverse cast as a woman of color.

lucky and bekka

Kristolyn Lloyd (left) and Gina Rodriguez on the set of “I Love Lucy & Bekka.”

“I Love Lucy & Bekka” is a very focused web series. There’s almost zero emphasis on who these girls are as individuals, and all about who they are as best friends. Why did you decide to make their friendship the centerpiece?

I think that I really love writing women and I really like writing about female relationships because our friendships are really unique and intimate and interesting in that way. Men have bromances, and women have very complicated and glorious connections. I haven’t really seen much of that in TV. And I’m obsessed with my girlfriends. These conversations are very similar to the conversations that I had in my early 20s. You know, four hours a day just talking to each other on the phone or talking in the bathroom about whether or not we would still be friends if we were ghosts, and stuff like that.

I loved that time so much and I wanted to showcase a friendship that was about immediate forgiveness. There’s so many “odd couple” shows where the girls or the guys are so different that they clash and there is conflict all the time. I thought it would be interesting — just like in my own best friendship, when the conflict is that you love that person so much, and you’re still having intellectual conversations and giving them good advice, but it’s through love.

What truly caught my attention, though, was the fact that these episodes are incredibly short.

“Men have bromances, and women have very complicated and glorious connections.”

I think that I wanted to make sure that I was accomplishing the nugget of what was good about these conversations, instead of just waiting around to get to the golden part of it. I wanted to just get to the juice, get in and get out. … I wanted [the episodes] to be like Skittles, instead of long meals.

Gina Rodriguez is having a big moment right now with The CW’s “Jane The Virgin.” I know the web series was filmed before the show’s success, so how did you two connect for this project?

I met Gina my first year in LA. I met her at a party and she grabbed me and she was like, “You write funny stuff, we should work together one day.” So when we were casting this, Gina was one of the first names that came up in my mind. Then I just wanted to make sure that the person that we cast as Lucy had genuine chemistry with Gina. … When Kristolyn sat with her and they were just talking together, you could see the real friendship and the real chemistry between the two. It was a no-brainer.

And your two leads are actresses of color. That’s more diversity than you see on many shows today. Was that an intentional part of your casting process?

We did audition white actresses, we auditioned the entire rainbow, [but] when Kristolyn came in — as a person of color, as a writer of color — I crushed, to be completely honest. I was so excited and happy because I’m a person of color and I like to write for people of color and I especially like to write my voice for people of color. I think it’s a really exciting time right now … I think people are really excited to see more characters and actors of color on their screen.

lucy and bekka
Holder (left) behind the scenes of “I Love Lucy & Bekka.”

Writers approach their characters of color in different ways. Some feel it’s best to keep a character’s ethnicity or race in the background rather than emphasizing it. How do you feel on the subject?

I think in this first season of the show it wasn’t a focus of mine, because I was really focused on the girls. I’m not a colorblind person, and so when I write people of color, I am taking what makes them who they are into account. So I don’t think it’s something that I have to decide. But I never, ever want to put the color of someone’s skin to the side.

One of the more interesting episodes for me was “Porn.” I thought it made a unique comparison between how women are portrayed in gang-bang porn and how women are treated on “The Bachelor.” What prompted that one?

I think that porn is really interesting. I don’t like to watch women in porn. I think watching gay porn, like male gay porn to be specific, is just so much better because you don’t have to watch women crying. It’s just bad — female porn is just bad. Not gay female porn, but heterosexual girl-on-guy porn is the saddest thing I’ve seen in my life. And “The Bachelor” is incredibly similar to that kind of porn in that you do have a wide shot of a mansion, and then you do find these girls in pretty, nice dresses saying what they think love is. And by the end of the episode their mascara is running down their face and they’re crying.

The comparison is being done for me. I watched an episode from this past season and the farmer had them do a competition where they had to milk cows and then drink the milk as fast as possible while in bikinis. I mean they’re in bikinis, there’s white liquid coming out of their mouths.

That’s an image that’s going to be hard to get out of my head.

It’s crazy how similar it is. I find it really interesting that all of America is obsessed with “The Bachelor,” they think it’s an amazing show about love.

But shifting gears back to Lucy and Bekka, will viewers get to see more from these two soon?

Creatively, there is a second season. I have one, but we’re just not sure right now whether or not it will be in web series form or in a long-form context. … If people would like to know what happens next with Lucy and Bekka, they will probably learn what happens next. We’re excited to put that out there.

This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
