Research Suggests Cats Like Their Owners as Much as Dogs

Cats are famously temperamental and are generally considered to be less loyal and social than dogs. But recent research suggests that cats actually have similar levels of attachment to their human caregivers as dogs and infants. WIRED’s Arielle Pardes spoke with Kristyn Vitale from Oregon State University’s Human-Animal Interaction Lab to find out more.

Based on a true story, the film follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a $ 300 million deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

Some friendships transcend lifetimes. In A Dog’s Journey, the sequel to the heartwarming global hit A Dog’s Purpose, beloved dog Bailey finds his new destiny and forms an unbreakable bond that will lead him, and the people he loves, to places they never imagined. Bailey (voiced by Josh Gad, Frozen) is living the good life on the Michigan farm of his "boy," Ethan (Dennis Quaid, The Special Relationship) and Ethan’s wife, Hannah (Marg Helgenberger, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation). He even has a new playmate: Ethan and Hannah’s baby granddaughter, CJ. The problem is that CJ’s mom, Gloria (Betty Gilpin, Netflix’s GLOW), decides to take CJ away. As Bailey’s soul prepares to leave this life for a new one, he makes a promise to Ethan to find CJ and protect her at any cost. Thus begins Bailey’s adventure through multiple lives filled with love, friendship and devotion as he, CJ (Kathryn Prescott, 24: Legacy) and CJ’s best friend, Trent (Henry Lau, Oh My Venus), experience joy and heartbreak, music and laughter, and a few really good belly rubs. Directed by two-time Emmy® Award winner Gail Mancuso (TV’s Modern Family), A Dog’s Journey is produced by Gavin Polone (A Dog’s Purpose, Zombieland) and written by returning screenwriters W. Bruce Cameron & Cathryn Michon and Maya Forbes & Wally Wolodarsky, based on the best-selling novel by Cameron. The film, from Amblin Entertainment and Reliance Entertainment, in association with Walden Media and Alibaba Pictures, is distributed by Universal Pictures domestically, and by Universal and Amblin Partners internationally. Mancuso’s talented collaborators include cinematographer Rogier Stoffers (The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan), production designer Eric Fraser (The Journey Home, The Girl in the Photographs), editor Robert Komatsu (TV’s The X-Files, Jobs), costume designer Patti Henderson (A Dog’s Purpose, Siberia) and composer Mark Isham (The Accountant, 42). A Dog’s Journey is executive produced by Seth William Meier (Happy Death Day), Lasse Hallström (A Dog’s Purpose, The Hundred-Foot Journey), Luyuan Fan (Last Letter) and Wei Zhang (Factory Boss).

The Secret World Of The Flag Mod: No Dogs, No Dongs

Flag Mod (noun) The special users on dating sites that determine if flagged posts are actually inappropriate.

I don’t know about your experience, but when I dip my toe into the murky waters of online dating, I find myself hitting the button marked “Report It” more often than the one marked “Like.” The and OKCupid algorithms do their best, bless their little robot hearts, but a lot of scammers, frauds, and just plain dirtbags still slink through. After flagging yet another oh-so-phony profile, I was invited to become an OKC Flag Mod. The skill-set required for the job appears to be: a working command of the English language, a computer (mobile apps don’t work), and the ability to look at a random selection of erections without losing your lunch.

So here I am, your Flag Mod. When you flag that obscene photo or report that fake profile, I’m one of the “special users” who determines whether it should in fact be deleted, or if you were overreacting. The position is both unpaid and unsung, two job descriptions I usually avoid, but I do it because it’s a fascinating glimpse into the psyche — and often the boxers — of the dating public.

Most of the deleted photos are simple “NTU” violations: Not The User. On OKC, you’re asked to post only photos of yourself in the main Profile Photos folder. Your dogs — and there are lots of dogs, hundreds upon hundreds of dogs — your artwork, your adorable niece, that amazing dinner you cooked, a view of the Grand Canyon … all of those have to go into a different folder, or they get deleted. It’s a technicality, and personally I like a nice travel photo, but them’s the rules. I don’t know why anyone even bothers to narc on a picture of a vegetable garden or a sunset, but they do.

The second most frequent violation I see is the Scammer, or Fake Profile. Usually the flagged photo is an informal selfie of a late teen/early 20’s girl, invariably with impressive cleavage and pouty lips and who, for some reason, is almost always a brunette. The reporting party is invariably an affronted suitor who huffs “NTU! Not the user! This is porn star Janessa Brazil!!” A quick Google Image Search reveals that, indeed, the pics were copied from the Instagram feeds or web pages of an adult model or porn actress. I don’t know why the reporters are so proud of their working knowledge of the porn industry, but there you go.

As a female over 50, I am approached by a different kind of con artist: The Beverly Hills Millionaire. He looks like a suit model (because the picture was clipped from the Spiegel catalog) and he “will love to know you more,” (because Google Translate still hasn’t quite gotten a handle on the future perfect tense.) He’s always “a God-fearing man,” “humble” and “of great integrity” — often a widower with a daughter. And it’s always a daughter, never a son. I find it interesting that these scammers are sophisticated enough to know that “daughter” elicits more sympathy than “son,” but un-American enough not to know that the number of widowers under age 60 within walking distance of Cedars Sinai Medical Center approaches zero.

The least common variety of flagged photos are Obscene Content, but I do see them. I can’t unsee them. The OKC rule is “Ladies, no nips. Guys, no dongs.” And yet dongs there be. There are men who have posted pictures of penises that, trust me, are not ready for their close-up. “I don’t know why you’re so proud of that, sir,” I want to write in the Comment box, but the users never see the feedback of the Flag Mods.

There are a few other violation categories, like Extreme Close Up (eyeballs, tattoos), or Childhood Photo. Yet there’s no rule against hiding your face entirely, or being a married couple — both of which strike me as playing fast and loose with the definition of “dating site.” But, hey, I don’t have to go out with them. That’s the secret superpower of all online dating: It doesn’t matter how vulgar the guy is, or how phony the girl is; bottom line, you don’t have to go out with them if you don’t want to.

Models Who Love Their Dogs More Than Their Selfies

Photo: Courtesy of Jessica Hart / @jessicahart

If your feed was infiltrated by tail-wagging, floppy-tongued pups juxtaposed with the gleaming faces of models today, you can thank National Dog Day. And it was courtesy of that trending hashtag that we found that plenty of pretty catwalkers lead pooch-centric lives, on and off the runway. Take it from Miranda Kerr, who has posed for editorials and campaigns alongside her Yorkie, Frankie; or Jessica Hart and her dog, Floyd, who has his own instagram account dedicated to his adventures. And even Angel Rutledge, Chipotle’s finest find, maintains a social media presence for her hound dog, Mo.

There’s also Alana Zimmer, who has mastered the art of selfies with her tuft-coiffed canines, Angel Rea and Zip, while Willow Hand always seems able to have her bite-sized little one ready for a snap. Suvi Koponen Riggs gets her exercise at the dog park, while Martha Hunt takes her little one, Bear, for long walks on the beach. But who has the best time of all? Georgia May Jagger knows how to capture a heartwearming, pillow-laden moment with her four-legged “Dink.” Woof!

Pup Calls Adorable Ceasefire On These Two Dogs Stuck In Serious Gridlock

This pup just wants everyone to give peace a chance.

After watching her mother, Nancy, and brother, Bosco, remain in a deadlocked game of tug-of-war, Casley the dog decided to intervene, shown in the video above.

According to its description, the video was first shared on Facebook where it quickly went viral — and we completely understand why.

Watch as the pair of pups, with noses smooshed together, clutch the tennis ball with no signs of letting go. Casley comes along to break up the little disagreement and sticks her head on the pair’s snouts.

While it doesn’t seem that she really helped solve the problem, we’re happy she tried. If only there were more Casleys in the world.

‘Puppies Are Dicks’ Hilariously Makes The Case That Old Dogs Rule

Let’s get something straight: we aren’t the ones dissing puppies here. That’s Eric and Sara Sims, authors of the new book “Puppies Are Dicks: Adopt An Older Dog.”

puppies are dicks

But we have to admit, the pair make a hilariously compelling case. Not just for why puppies are — as they put it in the book — “8 pound dicks,” but also why puppy mills are evil and pet adopters should open their hearts to a pooch with a few years under his or her collar.

puppies are dicks

Eric Sims, a producer for the TV show “Archer,” says he and his speech pathologist wife came up with the idea for the book while drunk-watching a “Golden Girls” marathon, with their own blended family of three cats and two dogs.

“It’s like the Brady Bunch only way smellier,” he says. “The biggest inspirations were our older dogs Penny and Riley, who are f’ing awesome. They are so laid back and funny.”

puppies are dicks

Older dogs come with other appealing qualities, too, like being house trained and calm, and “they love to eat spiders for some reason, which helps, kinda. Oh, and also their teeth look like candy corn, which is festive,” Sims says.

In other words, no one’s trading entirely in the world of facts here.

puppies are dicks

Sims and his wife self-published the book, which contains illustrations by Jason Barnes. Sims’ next literary adventures also involve a saucy look at animals who are, at times, misunderstood.

“I’m writing a book titled ‘Fuck You Cat, I Love You’ about the abusive relationship I’m in with my cat, Waffles,” he says. “Also, there is a weird phenomenon of people not adopting all black animals for some reason. So, I’m writing a book titled ‘Why Won’t You Adopt Me, ‘Cause I’m Black?'”

A third project, which is unrelated to shelter pets but undoubtedly still eye-opening, is a scratch-and-sniff celebrity book that’s “currently untitled.”

puppies are dicks

“Puppies Are Dicks,” meantime, does have a very serious aim: getting folks to think about adopting a canine companion who’s already been around the block a few times, and might be having a hard time making it out of the shelter.

“I personally love it when a dog has the grey face and milky eyes of, say, an Ernest Borgnine. So cute,” Sims says. “We’re hoping that people will read ‘Puppies Are Dicks,’ laugh, learn a thing or two, and share its message with their friends and family simply because it’s a fun read.”

“Puppies Are Dicks” is available for purchase on Amazon, with a portion of the proceeds designated for the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. Older dogs are available for adoption at your local shelter.

How Walt Disney Animation Studios Kept Feast From Looking Like a Dog’s Dinner

Patrick Osborne tried something interesting back in 2012: He set up two 1 Second Everyday accounts. With one he used the app to capture brief glimpses of his day-to-day life, and with the other he recorded quick footage of many of the meals he consumed that year.

“And it was the 1 Second Everyday footage of all that food which turned out to be the far more compelling recording,” Patrick explained during a recent phone interview. “There’s something cool about the amount of life you see just in showing your meals, these hints of intriguing and exciting things happening out beyond the edges of the plate.”

Coincidentally, right after Paperman took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short in February 2013, Walt Disney Animation Studios announced that it was formally reviving its shorts program. What’s more, studio staffers were then invited to submit pitches to WDAS’ new shorts trust.

“And as I was trying to come up with some ideas for films that I then could pitch to the shorts trust, my mind kept circling back to that 1 Second Everyday recording that I did of all that food,” Patrick continued. “It just felt like that there was something there that I could center a short around. So I started with that concept and then mixed it in with the patterning and the color of different foods placed on the table, just to see what that might be like.”

But in the end, in spite of the obvious potential for doing fun things with sound design and color, Patrick’s app-driven idea came up short, mostly because Patrick’s short idea lacked a through line, a reason for an audience to sit and watch this parade of food go by.

“But then I thought: What if we put a dog under that table?” Patrick stated. “That’s a character who would be supremely interested in what was being served for breakfast, lunch and dinner within that household. Which then gave us a strong reason to focus on all that food. And what if this dog had been newly adopted by this family? Maybe in the background of all these brief snippets of meals, we could then show how this dog’s relationship with his new family was unfolding.”

This was one of the three ideas that Patrick pitched to WDAS’s story trust. (“John Lasseter won’t allow you to come into a pitch session with just one idea,” he explained. “He doesn’t want you to put all of your creative eggs in one basket. So you always have to come into these shorts pitch sessions with three distinctly different ideas.”) Then he went back to his day job, which was working as the co-Head of Animation of Big Hero 6.

“And then, in October of 2013, they called and said they were going to make my short,” Patrick said. “And then, in an instant, everything changes. I’m no longer working on Big Hero 6, and I now have a deadline for story, which is something that I’ve never done. So I immediately began trying to figure out how I was going to turn my pitch into an emotionally satisfying short film.”

And given that Feast‘s green light also came with a delivery date (this new WDAS short had to be completed by June 10, 2014, so that it could then have its world premiere at the annual Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France), Patrick didn’t have any time to dither — especially since before production could actually begin on Feast, he and his team first had to nail down this short’s story.

“That’s the real difference between making a full-length animated feature and an animated short,” Patrick explained. “When you work on a feature, a little bit of story gets approved and then moves into production. But when you work on a short, all of your story gets approved at once, which is kind of a blessing and a curse, given that you know as soon as your story gets approved, layout needs to get done by next week.”

Getting that final story approval wasn’t easy, though. The first three Feast story reels that Patrick and his team submitted didn’t pass muster with Lasseter, largely because they hadn’t yet realized the vision for this animated short that he had originally pitched.

“John was always quick to point out all of the stuff that was already worked,” Patrick recalled. “He loved Feast‘s look right from the get-go, how strong the design of the food was, how you could immediately identify every meal that was being served no matter how briefly that food item was up on screen. But what John really pushed us on was this short’s through line. At every meeting John would remind us that the reason he selected my pitch for development was because something felt emotionally right to him about this story idea. He just kept after us to deliver on the emotional promise of that pitch.”

And in the end Patrick and his storyboard artists did finally find a way to deliver on Feast‘s initial promise. But a lot of that was because of many of the behind-the-scenes creative decisions that these WDAS staffers made as they rushed to put this new animated short together.

Take, for example, Winston, the cartoon canine who serves as Feast‘s central character. Given that this animated short was mostly going to be made up of sequences that were less than five seconds long, it was crucial that audiences be able to quickly find Winston in every single scene. What’s more, audience members had to be able to immediately read all this dog’s emotions.

“That’s why, after looking at all of these breeds of dog, we decided to make Winston a Boston Terrier,” Patrick said. “Given this breed’s distinctive black-and-white coat, that was then going to make Winston very easy to find in every scene. More to the point, given that Boston Terriers have these big, expressive eyes, that was then going to make possible for audience members to quickly determine what this dog is thinking and feeling.”

Of course, to make sure that audiences absolutely knew for sure what was going on at all times in Feast, Patrick and company did employ a few cinematic cheats, like how Winston is placed in the very center of most shots in this short.

“We also don’t immediately start in with those three- and five-second-long shots,” Patrick continued. “What we learned from our first few story reels is that if we started too quickly, we then didn’t give our audience enough time to get on board with the creative conceit of this short. That’s why Feast‘s first few shots are the longest. We wanted to give the audience a chance to get to know these characters first, let them take in a little of their world and enjoy the performances before this short then really kicks into gear.”

And to make sure that the cartoon canine at the very center of Feast came across as an authentic dog, WDAS brought in a trio of Boston Terriers — Gizmo, Chibi and Swee’Pea — for Patrick and his animators to observe.

“And we took full advantage of our time with those Boston Terriers,” Patrick laughed. “That scene in Feast where Winston is trying to lick peanut butter off of his muzzle comes straight from the afternoon that our artists spent watching and drawing those dogs.”

And in the end Patrick and his team met their deadline and delivered a fully realized version of Feast just three days before this short was supposed to have its world premiere at Annecy 2013. And to now have Feast screening in front of Big Hero 6 in theaters around the globe little more than a year after this WDAS production was first officially put into development just seems kind of amazing to Patrick.

“John always says to trust the process,” Patrick said. “But to be right in the middle of that process, trying to get the hang of things like scoring? I won’t lie to you: It was very challenging and often pretty scary. But to be honest, the best part of working on Feast was that the team at WDAS got to build on everything that we’d learned from our last couple of shorts. We got to use Meander again like we did in Paperman, but do it in more of a naturalistic style of shooting film, with a little bit more focus on cuts and cinematography.”

Which is perhaps a polite way of saying that just because Walt Disney Animation Studios’ newest short stars a dog doesn’t mean that Feast then had to looks like a dog’s dinner.

Old Dogs & New Tricks: The Oral History of a ‘Gay’ Web Series (Part 5)

The Anti-Ari

“Nathan Adler was actually a name I’d carried around for a while,” Acord says as our chat finally turns to his own alter ego, ODNT‘s big-hearted, fabulously follicled leading man. “I knew I was going to play him — although I did toy with the idea of playing Brad for a while — and I didn’t want him to be an actor, because I didn’t want an actor playing an actor, especially as the lead.”

For Leon that would have felt way too similar to another über-buzzy former HBO series about four close buds living in Lalaland: Entourage. But even at the risk of comparisons to the bro-ified version of Sex and the City, the actor was sure that he wanted Nathan to be in show business, or, more importantly, “to have access to actors and musicians.” So having Adler own a talent agency seemed like the most reasonable bet — provided that one thing be made quite clear: “Arvin, in the early days, thought Nathan should be a bit meaner, be more of an agent like [Ari Gold on Entourage], and I was like, ‘No, we see that all the time. Let’s make him a nice agent — even if they don’t really exist.'”

We share a laugh, but Acord makes it quite clear that his own experience with representation hasn’t been nearly as malevolent. Instead the longtime actor characterizes it as much more “uneventful” — occasionally helpful in a decidedly hands-off, anti-Nathan sort of way, which means no late-night counseling sessions, no open office hours, and absolutely no putting their asses on the line for him, all of which Adler has done simply for Ross Stein alone (especially this upcoming season, which finds the tightly wound thespian straddling the edge of professional glory — or a nervous breakdown, depending on how you look at it — when certain proclivities of his are made public).

Yet rather than fixate entirely on Adler’s job title/professional temperament, the Old Dogs & New Tricks creator had more important plans for his meaty creation. “One of the first ideas I had for Nathan,” he shares, “was right before I met Laurence. When I was just 29, I got involved with this kid who was 21 — which is not that big of a gap — but I remember thinking even then, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so fucking old and he’s so fucking young! And I really wanted to deal with that, because I’m still undecided about whether relationships with big age differences work or not. I think they can be very passionate short-term, but what happens when one of them turns 70 and one of them is still only 40?”

You can find these ambivalent feelings expressed in the on-again, off-again love affair between Nathan and his sweet but conflicted young paramour, Damian Johns (played by Ryland Shelton, who, despite Acord’s blessing, politely declined to comment for this blog post. I press the ODNT creator about this, and he will only say, “I am not, and never claimed to be, Doris Day.”)

Whatever their off-camera issues might be, there’s no denying that Shelton’s ODNT character is the cutest small-town refugee to hit Hollywood with big dreams since Janet Gaynor, or that Johns’ relationship with Adler, while most certainly hot and heavy, is also unsubstantiated, undefined, and, as of “Weho Horry Story,” off again.

In real life things are obviously a bit different for Acord, who married Laurence Whiting, his longtime partner and contemporary, last December in an intimate civil ceremony. Though they met in San Francisco in the early ’90s, Whiting, a successful restaurateur who has worked at some of the swankiest places in this town, is a true Angelino. He’s also — to use Leon’s words — “absolutely critical to the success of the show.”

“When it comes to show business, I handle the show, and he handles the business,” Acord reveals, attempting to describe what makes their professional partnership so successful. That means that Whiting, aside from offering up his and Leon’s home carte blanch as a critical filming location, handles everything from weekly budgets to daily catering and all sorts of seemingly mundane but vital tasks in between. I ask Laurence how he manages to do it all and still keep his sanity intact, and he credits the “amazing” ODNT crew: “producer/magician Steve Curtis, [DP] Kiko [Suura], [sound technician] Taiwo [Heard], [production designer] Danielle [Lee], [producer] Nicole [J. Adelman], and way too many people to mention” for making the set “a happy one.”

Having been there myself for the entirety of the filming of Season 3 this past spring, I can easily corroborate Mr. Whiting’s statement: The set is definitely a happy one. However, with complex shoots that usually occur over the course of two to four action-packed weekends (aside from the pilot, or the massive wedding episode in Season 2, or the Halloween special, which all required extended and/or varied schedules), everyone, from the grips to the extras, has to be 100-percent on top of their game.

“When we do need a voice of authority, I’d much rather it be him,” Leon admits after I question how he and Laurence keep the proverbial train running so smoothly. Acord is quick to point out that this rarely if ever has to occur, but nonetheless, rather than envision a good-cop/bad-cop scenario, I can’t help but imagine the guy as an effervescent if mischievous Lucy Ricardo, bopping about the kitchen, flour flying, while Whiting’s stern but loving Ricky stands akimbo, shaking his finger.

Obviously, things aren’t nearly as comically exaggerated, but to an extent the couple — who had previously worked together producing several stage shows — is very much like Ball and Arnaz: the archetypal and complementary pairing of unfettered right-brain creativity and problem-solving left-brain logic, only in this case, each man possesses a little bit of both. Where Leon is charismatic, self-deprecating, and occasionally shy, Laurence is warm, outgoing, and quietly confident in a don’t-mess-with-me kind of way. They endearingly call each other “Lee” and “Larry,” genuinely seem to enjoy each other’s passion and intellect, and, not surprisingly, obsess over every detail of their baby: Old Dogs & New Tricks.

That’s not to say that things are absolutely perfect for the Acord-Whitings. In fact, as Leon reveals, the couple even separated for a month after Season 1: “There was so much tension, pressure, and angst with the show taking off so quickly, and I was ready to jump into Season 2, but Laurence was a little hesitant.” Instead, it speaks to a pair who’ve reached a hard-earned but healthy symbiosis, a point at which they can each finally sit back and appreciate this so-called “happy ending” that we all fight so hard for. Either that or they both figure, “Who has time for drama? We’ve got a 3-year-old to raise!”
