The Emmy Awards will likely feature plenty of big names and nostalgia. But the safest bet in handicapping the night might be that no matter who wins in key categories, there will be fewer viewers watching, perhaps than ever before.

Viola Davis Makes History, Tracy Morgan Makes His Return & ‘Bessie’ Wins At 2015 Emmy Awards (VIDEOS)

(AllHipHop News) It took 67 years, but finally an African-American woman was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The honor went to Viola Davis for her portrayal of Annalise Keating in ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder.

“‘In my mind, I see a line, and over that line I see green fields and lovely flowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line. But I can’t seem to get there no how. I can’t seem to get over that line.’ That was Harriet Tubman in the 1800’s,” said Davis during her acceptance speech. “And let me tell you something. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.”

The night also saw the return to the Emmys for comedian/actor Tracy Morgan. The star of 30 Rock was involved in a serious car accident in 2014 where he suffered numerous injuries. Morgan took the stage at Microsoft Theater to hand out the award for Outstanding Drama Series.

“I missed you guys so much,” Morgan told the crowd as they gave him a standing ovation. “Thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my family, my beautiful new wife, I’m here… standing on my own two feet.”

Other winners at the 67th annual Emmy Awards included Uzo Aduba (Orange Is the New Black) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Regina King (American Crime) for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie, and Reg E. Cathey (House of Cards) for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.

The HBO film Bessie starring Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique took home the award for Outstanding Television Movie. HBO also won the two biggest awards of the night. Game of Thrones received the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, and Veep was awarded Outstanding Comedy Series.

Viola Davis Is First Black Lead Actress To Win Emmy Award [VIDEO]

Well it’s about time. Tonight (Sept. 20), Viola Davis became the first Black lead actress to win an Emmy award for her performance on ABC’s How To Get Away With Murder

Davis started her moving acceptance speech by quoting Harriet Tubman.

“In my mind, I see a line. And over that line I see green fields and lovely glowers and beautiful white women with their arms stretched out to me over that line,” she said. “I can’t seem to get over that line.”

She added, “The only thing that separates women of color from anything else is opportunity,” to a round of applause.

Davis beat out actresses including Taraji P. Henson (Empire) and Claire Danes (Homeland).

Also winning an Emmy award tonight was Uzo Aduba for her portrayal of “Crazy Eyes” on Orange Is The New Black.

Needless to say, the Internet reacted with plenty of celebrities giving their kudos. See below and on the flip.

The 15 Best Moments of the 2015 Emmy Awards

Amy Poehler and Amy Schumer Emmys

The 2015 Emmy Awards proved we’re very much living in the Golden Age of Television. Here are our fifteen favorite moments from the ceremony, including the best acceptance speeches and Andy Samberg’s funniest jokes.

1. Musical opening numbers are tricky, but Andy Samberg pulled it off pitch-perfectly. The bit expressed what so many of us feel about today’s TV-saturated world: too many good shows, too little time. (And apparently a lot of the shows are about wives.) But seriously though, it would take a lot longer than a year to get through them all.

2. Samberg’s musical number was followed by a bold and laugh-out-loud monologue, the best jokes of which had nothing to do with television. Kim Davis and Donald Trump were skewered, of course, but that True Detective dig got the biggest laugh. How long until he’s hosting the Oscars?

3. It was lovely when Transparent creator Jill Soloway thanked her moppa (the inspiration for the show’s lead) and Goddess in her acceptance speech. It was even more moving when she reminded everyone that there are still 32 states where a transgender person can be discriminated against. “We don’t have a trans tipping point,” Soloway said, “we have a trans civil-rights problem.”

4. Fans of Arrested Development must have been overjoyed to see Jeffrey Tambor and Tony Hale take home statues tonight, for best actor and best supporting actor, respectively. Like Hale, we owe Mitch Horowitz a big thank you for giving him his first job as the unforgettable Buster Bluth.

5. Even though Julia Louis-Dreyfus has won for best actress in a comedy award four years in a row now, she still brings it when she delivers an acceptance speech. “What an honor it is for you to honor me,” she said, supposedly quoting the writers of her show, Veep, before adding, “No, wait, no, I’m so sorry, Donald Trump said that. It’s getting trickier and trickier to satirize his stuff.” Bonus points for taking a selfie with Mel Brooks on stage when the series won for best comedy.

6. You have to hand it to James Corden—he’s really the only person capable of getting a standing ovation from the audience for the accountants of Ernest & Young.

7. On Twitter, the most popular commercial of the evening was by far Apple Music’s delightful ad starring a dancing Kerry Washington, Taraji P. Henson, and Mary J. Blige. Who else is dying for an invite to their next hang?

8. Leave it to Samberg, the guy who started SNL’s viral Digital Shorts, to bring the night’s weirdest bit of comedy, with the sketch “Emmys Can Kill.” Of course Jerry from Parks and Rec would be the one to take the fall.

9. The spoiler-heavy “In Memoriam” piece for this year’s dearly departed shows not only gave away the endings to some of the series in your Netflix queue, but it also proved which series went out with a bang (Jon Stewart, Colbert, Mad Men), and which ones barely registered a whimper. (We’re looking at you, Two and a Half Men.)

10. The Amys said it best: Awards shows are typically an excuse for the Internet to ignore talent and weigh in only on how actresses look. So it’s pretty refreshing to see Frances McDormand pick up award after award for Olive Kittridge in a clean face and simple ponytail—a reminder that you don’t have to win the red carpet horse race to actually win at the Emmys.

11. Still, it was nice of Amy Schumer to thank her makeup artist for that perfect smoky eye in her acceptance speech for best comedy sketch show. Also, who else was left wondering what a “stupid sex talk show that nobody wanted” from Schumer would look like?

12. It took only sixteen nominations, eight of them for his role as Don Draper, for Jon Hamm to finally win an Emmy. Here’s hoping he wins another for the proposed prequel, Dick Whitman: Horny Hobo.

13. There were a lot of great acceptance speeches tonight, but the most powerful came from Viola Davis, who became the first African-American woman to win for best actress in a drama, then opened with a quote by Harriet Tubman. “The only thing that separated women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” she then said. “You cannot win Emmys for roles that simply aren’t there.” Amen.

14. We weren’t the only ones surprised to see Tracy Morgan return to the stage after his devastating car accident: Many in the audience were visibly overwhelmed. It seemed like this was going to be the first time we saw the serious side of Tracy Morgan, but it took only a minute before he was cracking jokes about impregnating more than a few women at the after-party.

15. Seriously, can we get Andy Samberg to host everything? The man ended the show a minute early!

Cookie’s Empire: Taraji P. Henson Earns Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Nomination

Taraji P. Henson snagged herself an Emmy nomination this morning (July 14) for her role as Cookie Lyon on Empire. Henson is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The 44-year-old Washington D.C. native’s Emmy competition is pretty serious with Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Claire Daines (Homeland), Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Robin Wright (House of Cards), and Tatania Maslany (Orphan Black).

This one could go either way, but Henson seems to be the front runner just based on Empire’s success, what her character means to the show, and how big it is on social media.

Lee Daniels On “Empire” Emmy Snubs: “F*ck These Motherf*ckers” (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) The Emmy nominations came out yesterday (July 16). Fox’s megasmash Empire earned three nominations, but only one in the major acting categories (Taraji P. Michelle Dockery, 'Downton Abbey' Star, Auctioning Emmy Awards Gown To Help Syria War Victims

LONDON (AP) — “Downton Abbey” star Michelle Dockery is selling the eye-catching gown she wore to last year’s Emmy Awards to help victims of the Syria civil war.

Christie’s auction house says the Prada dress, featuring a red halter-style top and burgundy skirt, will go under the hammer in London on June 20. Proceeds will go to humanitarian organization Oxfam. The gown is expected to fetch between 3,000 pounds and 5,000 pounds ($ 5,000 and $ 8,400).

The actress, who plays Lady Mary in the costume drama, visited a Syrian refugee camp in Jordan last year. She said she hoped the buyer “will get as much pleasure from it as I did when I wore it to the Emmy awards and that we can raise as much money as possible to support the Syrian people.”
