10 Damn Good Pairs of Denim Jeans to Add to Your Wardrobe

Denim jeans are the ultimate closet staple. They’re rare in that they’re decidedly immune to color-mismatching blunders and seasonal faux pas. But landing those wear-me-everyday pairs of denim jeans can feel like an existential dilemma. Rarely is it simple, easy, or fun. Finding the right combo of fit, wash, and detailing can be as distressing as the intentional breaking in of the jeans themselves.

You’ve already bid farewell to the lightweight chinos, joggers, and linen pants of summer, so now’s the time to invest in some solid full-length denim to fill the void in your wardrobe. Our goal here is not to suggest a blind investment in our top picks, but to consider a range of styles and fits that—who knows?—could flatter you most unexpectedly.

7 Reasons to Love Leather: The Best Products to Own This Fall

Instead of nit-picking every feature, assess the holistic versatility of your potential purchase, like whether you can dress up that black pair with leather boots (yes!), or straight-leg selvedge denim with Blundstones (we’ll say yes to that, too!). At the end of the day, jeans are about utility and comfort as much as effortless style, and cherry-picked 10 denim jeans that match the mission, across a reasonable budget range.

1. Black Denim Houstons

The Houstons boast top-notch construction in a tapered fit that’s surprisingly roomy, but never slouchy. We love the indigo, but if you’re looking for a black denim pair for any occasion, this is the one.

2. Club Monaco Super Slim Denim

These slim-profiled jeans reflect the shades of fall in grey-olive—lightly faded for a more casual look. If you’re not a fan of raw denim because of its need-to-break-in ruggedness, you’ll appreciate the added stretch in these.

[$ 129.50; clubmonaco.com]

3. Pilgrim Blake Slim Fit Jeans

Williamsburg-based Pilgrim Surf + Supply specializes in swim trunks, but they also make killer jeans crafted from 100 percent cotton Japanese selvedge denim. The Blake has five pockets and sits higher on the waist, boasting the brand’s signature Pilgrim embroidery on the back pocket and a pennant on the waistband.

[$ 185; pilgrimsurfsupply.com]

4. Mr. Porter Mr P. Slim-Fit Selvedge Denim Jeans

Mr. Porter’s in-house brand, Mr P, succeeds effortlessly with its own denim line. This selvedge pair is “woven with a black warp and blue weft” for a darker shade, featuring a not-too-slender, but still slim, cut.

5. Ami Fit Jeans

Over time, these Ami jeans will distress—the material ever-evolving for a desirable effect. Slick without being rigid, these are versatile enough to wear any season of the year.

[$ 270; amiparis.com]

6. Levi’s 511 Slim Fit Warm Men’s Jeans

Levi’s really hit the mark with this one. The name that started it all has introduced a flannel-like “warm” version of their 511 slim-fit jeans that incorporates a subtle stretch element, making the lean cut unexpectedly comfortable. Just as attractive is the sub-$ 100 price point.

[$ 98; levi.com]

7. Nudie Jeans Steady Eddie II Dry True Distressed Organic Denim Jeans

Nudie Jean’s Steady Eddie organic dry denim jeans will make it hard to go back to the regular stuff. A slight taper at the ankles lets you dress up the pair with Chelsea boots or white kicks, looking just as good with a few rolls at the cuff.

[$ 185; nudiejeans.com]

8. FRAME “Fade to Grey” L’Homme Skinny

Grey jeans are a little unexpected but incredibly wearable, and FRAME’s “Fade to Grey” L’Homme jeans are as close to perfect as you can get. The five pockets, mid-level rise, and subtle stretch offer all-day comfort.

[$ 200; frame-store.com]

9. 3×1 M3 Slim Straight Jean

The Egyptian topaz and honey stitching on the M3 jean are complementary accents to this light wash Japanese denim from 3×1. A mild taper at the ankle also contributes to a slightly retro feel.

[$ 265; 3x1denim.com]

10. J Brand Mick Skinny Fit In Seriously Soft Primox

If you want something a little trendier, opt for a pair of denim with individually destroyed holes at the knees. J Brand’s Seriously Soft denim technology makes this pair, well, seriously soft. They’ve tailored the impossibly black Mick to be fairly fitted through the hip and upper leg, coming down slightly tapered at the hem.

7 Stylish and Sustainable Clothing Brands You Can Feel Good About Wearing

Great style shouldn’t come at the cost of sacrificing your ethical and sustainable values. The global clothing and footwear industries account for about 8 percent of the world´s greenhouse gas emissions, according to a 2018 study from Quantis, a group that studies sustainability. Of course, you don’t want to contribute to that number by buying a closet filled with short-lived, eco-depleting, fast fashion. On the other hand, that stained T-shirt and crusty flip-flops from summers past aren’t doing you any favors.

Three Sustainable Clothing Companies That Are (Figuratively) Killing It

Thankfully, updating your closet and maintaining your consciousness is as easy as supporting companies that do good. These seven sustainable brands with out-of-the-box social, environmental, and ethical responsibility initiatives can elevate your style.

OluKai

Summer footwear can seem like an afterthought if you’re used to wearing a pair of forgettable flip-flops. But when you slide on a pair of OluKai slip-ons or sandals, not only will your feet get the support they need on the boat or beach, but your purchase will actually contribute toward the brand’s impressive social-responsibility mission. The California-based casual footwear brand inspired by Hawaii is a Certified B Corporation, which means it balances profitability with purpose and meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance and transparency. It even has its own Ama OluKai Foundation. Their foundation funds nine organizations with aims of restoring traditional Hawaiian culture and encouraging new growth with nonprofits for everything from at-risk youth, local arts organizations, traditional Polynesian sailing, and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association. This classic ʻOhana sandal pictured has custom artwork laser-etched on the footbed by Hawaiʻi artist Matthew Tapia.

Patagonia

The OG of sustainability and responsibility isn’t one to rest on its proverbial laurels. When it’s not suing the government to protect national parks, the Certified B Corp—which donated its $ 10 million tax refund to environmental groups this year—is consistently challenging the norm, protecting the environment, and creating innovative products. Their new Hot Weather Naturals Hemp Blends collection is the latest example. The Fair Trade Certified pieces are made with organic cotton, Tencel, and hemp (commercial hemp growing has been federally prohibited for almost 50 years in the U.S.). The result? A light, breathable, durable collection of shirts and shorts. The Trail Harbor Polo will keep you feeling dry and looking cool.

Outerknown

Plastic bottles and single-use packaging aren’t the only things hurting the environment. Tiny fibers from synthetic fabrics, like polyester swim trunks, enter our waterways each time they’re washed or worn in water—eventually to be consumed by sea life and later ingested by you. Outerknown, founded by pro surfer Kelly Slater (already known for making clothing from recycled fishing nets), has a new line of Australian merino wool trunks called Woolaroo that leave no trace. Before you imagine a thick, soggy sweater soaking up water, know that they’re woven with special technology to make them quick-drying, water-wicking, odor-resistant, and fully biodegradable. Bonus: They’re as easy on the eyes as they are on the environment.

[$ 125, Woolaroo Trunks; outerknown.com]

SOLO Eyewear

You’ll feel better sliding on these stylish sunnies that not only protect your eyes but also help restore vision to those in need: SOLO Eyewear donates 10 percent of its profits. The San Diego-based brand has helped more than 15,000 people in 32 countries see better by funding eye exams, eyeglasses, and cataract surgeries. The sunglasses are also eco-friendly, made from repurposed bamboo and recycled plastic, which has saved hundreds of pounds of new plastic from being produced each year. Even the sunglass cases and cords are thoughtful: They’re made by a group of female artisans in Panajachel, Guatemala. If that’s not enough, the startup also repurposes packing materials and defective sunglasses for parts.

[$ 89, Guyana; soloeyewear.com]

Courtesy Image

United By Blue

More than one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. And every year around the world, 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used. In addition to using organic and recycled fabrics, United By Blue takes their commitment to the environment further by organizing cleanups aimed at plastic pollution. Last year, it hosted 45 trash removal events in 21 states, removing more than 500,000 pounds of trash. But that’s just the tip of the pile. The Philadelphia-based company cleans up a pound of trash for every product sold—and currently it’s at 1,756,888 pounds. They don’t sacrifice style for substance, and these chambray shorts made from organic cotton and a blend of new and recycled hemp are proof.

[$ 62, Selby Short; unitedbyblue.com]

Courtesy Image

JCRT

Clothes headed to a landfill aren’t the only kind of waste that comes from fabric production. Aside from scraps of fabric left behind on the factory floor, the process requires significant amounts of energy and water. Not so with JCRT, makers of hand-crafted, limited-edition plaid shirts. The brand partners with Resonance’s Factory, which handles everything in its Dominican Republic space, rather than the usual method of sending pieces across the globe for completion. In addition to cutting back on environmentally unfriendly transportation, the factory’s advanced and very precise printing technology uses about two-thirds less material per garment, limiting damaging dye and water usage. Order online and your piece, like this cotton twill shirt, will be made on demand and shipped directly to you.

[$ 95, The Wrinkle In Time Short Sleeve Shirt; jc-rt.com]

Courtesy Image

Tact & Stone

The amount of water it takes to create a single cotton T-shirt is pretty shocking—around 650–700 gallons. If you’re a number-driven kind of guy, you’ll appreciate Tact & Stone, an LA-based brand that launched in February 2019. They aim for all-around sustainability, with a modern collection that’s not only stylish but transparent (they share the names of the ethical factories they work with); low-impact (they use organic, recycled, and upcycled materials); and forward-thinking (they engineer garments for a second and third life). A Tact & Stone upcycled pocket T-shirt saves 538 gallons of water, and their French terry hoodie saves a whopping 1,197 gallons. And similar to the circular economy concept used by Taylor Stitch, Patagonia, REI, and The North Face, once you’re done with a Tact & Stone piece, send it back for upcycling and you’ll get a discount on your next purchase.

Following the mind-bending HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT, celebrated filmmakers Josh and Ben Safdie return to the mean streets of New York City with GOOD TIME, a hypnotic crime thriller that explores with bracing immediacy the tragic sway of family and fate. After a botched bank robbery lands his younger brother in prison, Constantine Nikas (Robert Pattinson) embarks on a twisted odyssey through the city's underworld in an increasingly desperate—and dangerous—attempt to get his brother out of jail. Over the course of one adrenalized night, Constantine finds himself on a mad descent into violence and mayhem as he races against the clock to save his brother and himself, knowing their lives hang in the balance. Anchored by a career-defining performance from Robert Pattinson, GOOD TIME is a psychotic symphony of propulsive intensity crafted by two of the most exciting young directors working today. Josh and Ben Safdie’s transcendent vision is an intoxicating portrait of desperation and destruction that will not be soon forgotten.

Life in the Army will never be the same after an unforgettable wake up call from Academy Award® winner Robin Williams (Best Supporting Actor, Good Will Hunting, 1997) in this smash hit comedy. Williams delivers a tour-de-force performance in the role critics agree he was born to play – legendary armed forces radio deejay Adrian Cronauer. Deployed to Saigon to host a morning radio show during the Vietnam War, Cronauer’s sidesplitting antics and rapid-fire wit make him an instant hit with the troops in the field but soon get him in hot water with his by-the-book superiors. An unforgettable supporting cast and a red-hot soundtrack of ‘60s hits make this the quintessential Robin Williams comedy.

Fabolous “We Good,” Uncle Murda ft. Future “Right Now” & More | Daily Visuals 10.28.15

The Last time we saw the F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S he was reliving the role that made Tupac Shakur a household name in the hood with his visuals to “Gone For The Winter.” Now Fab returns with another Hip-Hop cinematic classic with the Rich Homie Quan-assisted “We Good” re-enacting one of the more under the radar 90’s cult classics, Dead Presidents.

If Fab’s aim this year was to resurrect classic 90’s Hip-Hop cinema with his visuals then we’re kind of disappointed he didn’t take advantage of that flat-top he had and recreate New Jack City or House Party. Just sayin’.

Uncle Murda links up with Future and takes a stab at crafting some trap house music while up in the club in the visuals to “Right Now.” Luckily Uncle Murda had the good sense not to tattoo Future’s name on his person after hooking up with the ATLien for this track.

Check the rest of today’s visuals which include work from Obie Trice, The Posterz, and more.

FABOLOUS FT. RICH HOMIE QUAN – “WE GOOD”

UNCLE MURDA FT. FUTURE – “RIGHT NOW”

OBIE TRICE – “BLESS THE BOOTH”

OHANA BAM – “RED FERRARI”

THE POSTERZ – “BULALAY”

Greed Not Good

Get this. And get it straight. Gordon Gekko was wrong. Greed is not good. Greed is bad. Greed eats away the core of society like a golden parasitic leech the size of Manitoba. Or Saskatchewan. One of those Provinces or Territories or Protectorates or whatever they use in Canada to keep their license plates distinct.

And practicing and/ or defending greed makes you nothing but a blood-sucking tick no matter how fancy a suit you’re wearing. Or size of the diamonds around your wrist. Or how free-range the organic heirloom Chicken Florentine is on your plate.

The movie Wall Street came out in 1987. And after Vietnam and Watergate and an oil embargo and four years of scolding by Jimmy Carter, a little irrational exuberance may have seemed warranted. But that was 30 years ago. Too much is no longer not enough. Too much has gotten way out of hand. Today’s too much is much much too much.

In his UN address, the Pope said it best. “A selfish and boundless thirst for power and material prosperity leads both to the misuse of available natural resources and to the exclusion of the weak and disadvantaged.” You know what; he’s right. Got to love Papa Frankie. The guy is like a slightly older more lovable Argentinian Bernie Sanders. With the crank dialed down to a manageable hum.

Let’s be honest; what we’re really talking about here is that idiot CEO, Martin Shkreli who raised the price of the life-saving drug, Daraprim, from $ 13.50 a pill to $ 750 each, because, and I quote, he “needs to start making a profit.” A 5,455% increase: which if produce distributors did to onions would make a side of rings about 3 grand.

This rapacious price gouge follows in the carnivorous footsteps of Gilead Sciences who developed a drug called Solvadi, a cure for Hepatitis C. The treatment regimen consists of 84 pills. Each one costing 1,000 dollars. That’s right. 84,000 dollars. But then you’re cured. And after all, how much is your life worth? Half of what you own? Everything? Your first born?

Gilead Sciences is publicly traded, but Turing Pharmaceuticals has no stockholders to report to. Just Shkreli, the former hedge fund manager. A group known for having the same conscience as starving hyenas in heat. These guys make a safari of lion-killing dentists look cuddlesome.

Remember the traders who advised clients to buy stocks that they themselves were getting rid of? Them’s our boys. The mindset of a hedge funder is whatever it takes to make the most money: lie, cheat, steal and worse. They rewrote the book on worse.

And now that worse includes letting people die for profit. We’ve moved beyond taxing hedge fund managers at the same rate as real humans and moved into deciding how long the season should be for hedge fund manager hunting. Bows? Shotguns? Anti-tank guided weapons?

What’s to keep these guys from creating diseases for which their companies conveniently have the antidote? Ethics? How often have Republicans lectured us: There is no ethical consideration, only business.

Speaking of ethically challenged, even Donald Trump called the price hike a disgrace and said Shkreli should be ashamed of himself. And when a man who sucks up to bigots and racists calls you shameless, it’s definitely time to rethink your priorities.

Mark Taylor knows his actions scream guilty—but he was only trying to stop the horrible terrorist attack. Instead, the government labels him an enemy combatant and throws him in the brig with no rights, no trial, and no way to prove his innocence. Mark's just a regular guy—a photographer—who finds himself in an extraordinary situation when an antique camera he buys at a dusty Afghanistan bazaar produces photographs of future tragedies. When he discovers that he can prevent the events in the photos from occurring, he can't live with the guilt if he doesn't try to stop the tragedies. When he sees September 11th, his efforts fail when no one listens to his frantic warnings. Then he learns that being an 'enemy combatant' means the government can do anything they want to him. Anything at all.

The Coolest Kids in Paris Don’t Have to Try Too Hard to Look Good

Paul Hameline

Away from the bolder-is-better statement looks of Paris Fashion Week exists a street style with a quieter edge—one that the native, baby-faced club kids preternaturally possess. Photographer Pierre-Ange Carlotti turned his lens on them recently, capturing their perfectly lived-in denim, distressed sneakers, threadbare tees, and oh-so-casually tossed-on outerwear, a uniform that lends itself to late-night antics and dancing until dawn. These stylish Parisians—designer Simon Porte Jacquemus among them—reveal the stylized collision of fashion, music, and androgyny in the City of Light.

Kenan & Kel Reunite For “Good Burger” Skit On Jimmy Fallon [VIDEO]

Jimmy Fallon is definitely eating this week and he invited all his 80s babies viewers for a late night snack at Good Burger. Yes, that Good Burger.

It has been nearly 20 years since Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell entertained Nickelodeon audiences with their fast food goofball film Good Burger (and much longer than that for its inception on the kid’s variety show, All That) and they reunited for an instant classic of a skit The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Kel returned to form as clueless Good Burger employee Ed as Fallon recalled his early days of earning an honest paycheck. Black Thought also made a great cameo appearance right before Kenan shocked the crowd as character Lester Oaks, completing the circle of golden nostalgia. The reunion was especially monumental, seeing the two longtime acting buddies have been enduring a cold war for many years.

Prepare to get your laugh on with Jimmy Fallon’s Good Burger sketch down below. For fries at the bottom of the bag, hit the flip to see Kel’s behind-the-scenes point of view.

Are Wayne, Baby and Young Thug All Good Now?

The first song on the new mixtape by Young Thug features Lil Wayne….

Nobody is saying a bunch, but inquiring minds are asking a bit of this and a bit of that. Folks believe it is possible that the trio may have found an amicable resolution. Then, they could have just had an old Wayne verse lying around. But…not a peep. Now…the silence can mean nothing or it could be “saying something” we can’t quite hear. Remember, this year these dudes have been beefing pretty heavily and Thugger has been doing a lot to f**k with Wayne like trying to call his album Carter 6. This is probably nothing since the song was previously released last year. BLAH!

Check out the mixtape.

Exclusive: Michael Ealy & Morris Chestnut Talk Good Vs. Evil In The Perfect Guy

Just in time for cuffing season and autumn date nights, Sony is unleashing the steamy thriller, The Perfect Guy upon audiences. The film splices just the right amount of chocolate box star power as Sanaa Latham stars as Leah, a successful professional who gets involved with a seemingly perfect guy Carter (Michael Ealy) after her longtime relationship with Dave (Morris Chestnut) hits a stagnant point. Unbeknownst to her upon their first date, Carter possesses a lethal alter-ego and when Dave comes back into the picture, an even more serious conflict is spawned.

The film combines the talents of director David M. Rosenthal and writers Alan B. McElroy and Tyger Williams alongside Ealy and Lathan in the executive producer chair. Hip-Hop Wired caught up with both of the leading men of the film and we broke apart their unique dynamic in The Perfect Guy.

Morris, if you had a dollar for every time a fan claimed you were “the perfect guy” how much money would you be holding?

Morris Chestnut: [Laughs] I thought you were going to ask me, if I had a dollar for every time some yelled out ‘Rickyyy’ [from Boyz n the Hood] I’d be a billionaire; I’d be richer than Donald Trump. Luckily I have people and fans who root for me but they don’t really tell me I’m the perfect guy.

You are pretty much the ideal good guy in every movie you play. How close were you to shaking things up this time around?

Morris Chestnut: The shake-up was when I came into the restaurant and had a situation with Mike’s character. That was the closest…and it was fun! Mike’s a really good dude; he’s a great actor and we had a great time shooting it.

Mike, you actually got to play the bad guy. Did you like doing this role?

Michael Ealy: I loved it. I loved everything from start to finish. In terms of coming on board to the project to producing the project and being part of the creative process and developing the script to where it needed to be. And shooting this movie was amazing.

The movie got shot in like a month?

Morris Chestnut: We shot it pretty quickly and it was pretty contained.

Michael Ealy: It was about two months for me.

Was this your first time executive producing, Mike?

Michael Ealy: Yes, the first and definitely won’t be the last. I could definitely see myself behind-the-scenes and transitioning as time goes by.

But the audience doesn’t want to see you behind-the-scenes, though.

Michael Ealy: Yeah…that’s alright [Laughs]. It depends on the content you give them and I think you got to share the love. Everybody has to get the shine in all aspects.

What was it like working with a first-time director?

Michael Ealy: David isn’t a first-time director. He’s a first-time studio director. He’s done independent films and I’ve seen his work and David’s sensibilities were exactly what we needed in this movie. Because he’s not in the studio system, he has more indie traits and once you’ve seen the film, you’ll understand that it’s not as polished as say a Think Like a Man. It’s not as conventional and that’s what we’re going for. It’s a genre piece and people know the genre but we shot it from a grimy sensibility opposed to relying on other troupes from other movies.

With a stalker tale like this, we’ve started to see it more prevalent in the news. Is there some sort of domestic violence message in this film?

Morris Chestnut: I definitely think so. I’d say the overall message is really trying to get to know the person [that you date]. Take your time and don’t rush into anything too quickly and really learn to understand them.

Michael Ealy: I’d say this story is bigger than domestic violence. I think domestic violence almost simplifies the script because it’s not a case of domestic or verbal abuse–that’s What’s Love Got to Do with It. This is a thriller–like a romantic, psychological thriller if you will–and it’s more about Carter’s goal. Carter’s goal isn’t to hurt Leah. Carter’s goal is to make Leah do what he wants, which is to love him. As long as she’s loves him, then she’s going to be O.K. and that’s the sociopath in him talking. It’s about control and power.

Is Carter setting light-skinned brothers back with this film?

Michael Ealy: You know…[Laughs]…no! People have made this comment and that’s not really the goal. And I feel like there will be a couple of light-skinned brothers that will be proud of this [Laughs]. But I don’t think being a sociopath has anything to do with the tone of anyone’s skin so that won’t apply here and people will see that in the movie.

Speaking of Ricky, did you get a chance to check out Straight Outta Compton yet, Morris?

Morris Chestnut: I haven’t! I’ve been working on this TV show, Rosewood and it’s been really hard for me to take out 2 1/2 hours for the movie. But I’m definitely going to see it real soon.

How do you feel about being on TV once again?

Morris Chestnut: It’s a blessing, to having the opportunity and I’m looking forward to it doing well. The good thing about a movie is you get a lot of time to sit in your trailer to get your character right. TV shows move so fast which could be a good and a bad thing. Some time you don’t get to get into a scene as much but it’s also good not waiting like eight hours just to shoot the first shot.

Both of you guys are part of a pretty tight-knit group of Black Hollywood. When you get a script and see that one or the other–like Sanaa Latham is on board, does it make an automatic go for you?

Morris Chestnut: For me, that was definitely one of things seeing both Sanaa and Michael were involved. I said, ‘Wow, these are two high-caliber actors and I want to be a part of it and add to the mix and see if we can make something special.’ And our characters never really worked together in the movies that we’ve done together so this was a chance for that happen.

Michael Ealy: We had a good crew. Working with Sanaa was something I wanted to do for a long time and she didn’t disappoint because she’s just that good. And funny…so funny.

Trailers look like they give a lot of the movie away but they really don’t. What can people expect from The Perfect Guy?

Morris Chestnut: They give some good moments away but there’s still the journey. A lot of times what I find is when it’s a good movie that’s well-executed, you kind of forget the trailer and getting engrossed in the movie step-by step, so hopefully this happens with this one.

Michael Ealy: There is still plenty of good moments that haven’t been given away and I can’t wait for people to see those moments, seeing that the studio has been playing nice.

The Perfect Guy hits theaters tomorrow, September 11. Pre-purchase your tickets on Fandago.

With rumors brewing that Gatsby and JCA Beats Productions will be providing music for the upcoming “Pin Up: The Movie” documentary, it’s only a matter of time before the U.S. catches on to what they are dubbing “Swing Hop”. In the meantime, press play and enjoy the show.

New Annulment Process To Be Good News For Divorced Catholics

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis on Tuesday will release new streamlined procedures for annulling marriages after he — and thousands of Catholics before him — complained that the church’s current system is cumbersome, costly and often unfair.

Francis will release the new rules after a Vatican-appointed commission of canon lawyers spent the past year studying ways to simplify the process while safeguarding the principle of the indissolubility of marriage, the Vatican said.

Catholic doctrine holds that a church marriage is forever. An annulment is a judgment by a church tribunal that the marriage had some inherent defect from the start. Reasons vary, including that the couple never intended their marriage to last or that one of the spouses didn’t want children.

Catholics have long complained that it can take years to get an annulment, if they can get one at all. Costs can reach into the hundreds or thousands of dollars for legal and tribunal fees.

Without the annulment, divorced Catholics who remarry outside the church are considered to be adulterers living in sin and are forbidden from receiving Communion — a dilemma at the core of a current debate roiling the church.

Francis has already called for annulments to be free, saying all Catholics have the right to justice from the church. He has also said the church should take into account that ignorance of the faith can be a reason to declare a marriage invalid.

Francis has previously quoted his predecessor as Buenos Aires archbishop as saying half of the marriages that are celebrated are essentially invalid because people enter into them not realizing that matrimony is a life-long commitment.

Some of the proposals for streamlining the process have included removing the mandatory appeal for each annulment granted. A key member of the study commission, Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, has said he favors letting individual bishops make the decision rather than a full-fledged, three-member tribunal.

Many dioceses in the developing world don’t have annulment tribunals. The United States has so many that it often accounts for half of all the world’s annulments each year.

News in Brief: New Dating Site Suggests People You Already Know But Thought You Were Too Good For

SAN FRANCISCO—Saying love could be as close as a neighbor or colleague you’ve never once found yourself remotely interested in, new dating website OnSecondThought.com launched this week with a promise to pair users with people they already know but thought they were too good for. “On Second Thought uses a compatibility formula unlike any other site, drawing your personalized matches exclusively from those within your daily life who you’ve always considered beneath you,” said founder Layla Mufti, adding that the site’s easy-to-use interface allows members to get another look at the network of people they’ve written off in the past for not being attractive, intelligent, interesting, polite, active, hygienic, or stable enough to meet their standards. “One day you might get paired with someone from work who you’ve always regarded as mediocre-looking and kind of dumb, while the next it could be a …

News in Brief: Ted Cruz Worried All The Good Countries To Wall Off Taken By Other Candidates

TIPTON, IA—Following Gov. Scott Walker’s recent endorsement of building a fence along the Canadian border, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) reportedly worried Monday that all the good foreign countries to wall off from the U.S. had already been taken by other GOP candidates. “Sheesh, the rest of the guys snatched up the best countries right away and now all that’s left to barricade ourselves off from are a few crummy islands,” said Cruz, who appeared visibly distressed upon realizing that, in order to gain attention on the issue of immigration, he was now stuck with backing a plan to build a U.S. border wall in the middle of the Caribbean Sea to keep out undocumented Bahamian citizens. “Boy, I should have jumped on a better option when I still had the chance—it’s down to slim pickings now. Hmm, maybe I can say it would …

10 Reasons Why Having Your Campaign Poster Photo-Shopped Is A Good Thing

It’s election time in Canada and the Liberal Party of Canada has a new look for their campaign posters. They’ve been getting a lot of attention, particularly this modification of the candidate for Quebec’s LaSalle-Émard-Verdun riding’s poster, David Lametti.

2015-08-19-1439996483-8493487-LamettiGowron.PNG

Yup, that’s the Klingon leader Gowron, the son of M’Rel and the leader of the Klingon Empire. Quite the comparison!

Lametti’s been having fun with the attention this has been getting (the man who first created the poster even has a twitter handle: @liberalgowron), and so I thought I’d ask him, in the vein of David Letterman, to give us his Top 10 Reasons Why Having Your Campaign Poster Photo-Shopped is a Good thing. Here are his answers:

10. The photo-shopped posters create dialogue. People are talking about our posters, and the Liberals invite debate, discussion and dialogue.

9. People are more creative with our posters than with the other parties. Our posters are not bland, they stand out. With that we get people who will either love them or hate them, and people are at least being creative and interactive with the liberal posters, instead of just ignoring them like the NDP or Conservative ones.

8. The humour decreases the intensity of the poster. Some people have commented that the posters look too intense. I don’t agree with that, but having some fun with them certainly balances that out.

7. Having more and better hair than I’ve had before.

6. Free publicity. Thanks @liberalgowron

5. It shows that the Liberal team has a sense of humour. We take this in stride and laugh about it.

4. Ups Canada’s potential for a strategic alliance with the Romulans.

3. My former students would say I’m a tough marker but at least I’m not a Klingon.

2. Comic con’s been calling.

1. I’d still vote for a Klingon over Prime Minister Harper.

Maybe he’ll live long and prosper.

Was The Movie ‘My Own Private Idaho’ Good For The Gay Community?

If you’re going to make a movie about queer people, you’re likely going to get a divisive response. Does it reinforce negative stereotypes? Does it provide an accurate cross-section of the diverse LGBT community? How many think pieces will it incite? In this regular column, we’ll look at depictions of queers in cinema and ask, Was It Good For The Gays? Today we look at Gus Van Sant’s classic entry into the New Queer Cinema movement, My Own Private Idaho.

News in Brief: Recent Graduate Figures She Might As Well Do Good In World Until Economy Picks Up

BINGHAMTON, NY—Saying it seemed like a perfectly fine way to bide her time, recent SUNY Binghamton graduate Brenna Novich told reporters Thursday that she might as well do some good in the world until the economy picked up. “It’s really tough to find any positions in the publishing industry right now, so I guess there’s no reason I can’t make a positive impact on the community while I wait for something to open up,” said Novich, adding that she would probably teach underprivileged children or advocate for an environmental organization while keeping an eye on job openings. “No harm in giving back to society until hiring gets going again. I doubt it’ll take more than a couple of years at most, but there’s plenty of opportunities making a difference in other people’s lives to hold me over.” At press time, Novich was relieved …

This Parody Of Bollywood ‘Party Songs’ Is Too Good, Yaar

Any behemoth industry has its lazy side. In Bollywood, this has to be the “party song,” a seemingly requisite scene in a certain kind of blockbuster, governed by a crude formula that audiences still, somehow, go wild for.

There’s so much to satirize about the genre, from the requisite objectification of women (water must always meet clothing) to the reliable co-opting of black culture — with an always sub par rap interlude, à la Rebecca Black’s “Friday,” that belies the culture’s prejudices (against dark skin, and African-origin people, subservient in the insidious hierarchy that still lingers from colonial times).

Thankfully, India finally has satirists up to the task. In the long but worth it video above, the popular sketch comedy troupe All India Bakchod teams up with scene-stealer Irfan Khan  – you know his scene thefts from “Namesake,” “Life Of Pi,” and “Jurassic Park” — for a parody that perfectly skewers Bollywood’s particular hypocrisies.

Based on “Party All Night,” a hit song from 2013, the satiric version calls out everything from censor boards (Bottles! Girls! Because this is a song, censors will let it go!) to cynical producers who know the music-leading structure of the industry means they can make a hefty salary off a movie with a single catchy song and little else of note. Even for those unfamiliar with Bollywood, the tropes should feel relevant, given that every American party anthem music video engages in parallel ones.

As a side benefit, it’s fun to see Khan — a hidden gem in Bollywood’s thicket of Ken-doll clones — playing diva, in the leisurely intro. “I don’t want to brag about myself, but I … can … do … anything.”

Respectfully requesting a parody of Indian cable news next.

News in Brief: Good News Kept From Parents Out Of Fear Of Proving Them Right

DANBURY, CT—Saying she wants no part of the conversation that would inevitably result if she broke the good news, local medical billing technician Jenny Comers reported Friday that she’s keeping word of her recent pay raise from her parents out of fear of proving them right. “If I tell them about the raise, they’ll immediately attribute it to the advice they gave a while back about how being assertive and clearly stating what you want yields positive results—there’s no way I’m giving them that satisfaction,” said Comers, who earlier this week requested a one-on-one meeting with her supervisor, directly asked for a pay increase, and within a matter of minutes received a bump in her salary, a course of action she had previously dismissed as futile and “completely ridiculous” when it was proposed by her mother and father during a phone call three weeks …

Good News, Wizards! J.K. Rowling Reveals Hogwarts Is Free

Forget that trip to Gringotts, people. Hogwarts won’t cost you one Galleon.

Some recent online debate has called into question the actual price of tuition at Hogwarts, which is supposedly more than $ 43,000 per year. This obviously caused worry among wannabe wizards, but after a fan tweeted at J.K. Rowling about the issue, the Harry Potter author squashed all concern like a bludger.

Mic, which caused some of the initial debate with an article on the actual cost of attending the school, accepted Rowling’s explanation and got a hard dose of wizard reality from the author.

Even though none of us are actually going to the real Hogwarts, the news still feels like a monetary weight just got lifted off our shoulders, Wingardium Leviosa-style.

Image: TheTVMouse

Yeah, that’s what we said, Hermione, LeviOsa. (Ron’s right, she needs to sort out her priorities.)

Still, according to Rowling’s tweet and as seen through Harry Potter’s visits to Diagon Alley, it appears things like books and wands may not be covered by wizard financial aid. So how about it, J.K.? Can we get some additional coverage for that, too? And as long as you’re doing that, can Universal’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park be included as well? Then it’d be free roller coasters and butterbeers for everyone!

Ten points to magical government programs!

“Good Morning Children, Time to Open Up Those Eyes and Let the Sunshine Come in and Fertilize Your Brains!”

Growing up my family had a habit that was viewed as crazy by some, off the wall by others, and obscene by the truly informed.

My father had a very high work ethic. As CEO at the local Coca-Cola Bottling Company, he would sit in meetings with supervisors, listen to their reports….but tended to rely more on the information that he got directly from the route men, the ones that were in the stores, the ones that heard comments by store managers and floor managers….
comments often not passed on in a more formal meeting with somewhere higher in rank.

Thus he began the habit of being at the plant no later than 6 AM each morning so that he could walk among the trucks as they were being loaded, asking questions, listening for important information.

But Daddy had another peculiar habit…he liked to have breakfast with his entire family and Mother…a total of about 8, depending on the year and who had been born or come to live with us.

4:45 AM found Daddy going up and down the hallways…SINGING! Yes, Singing!

“Good morning children, time to open up those eyes and let the sunshine come in and fertilize your brains!”

As Daddy was not a singer, the tune would change each morning, but the words were always the same. He knew the first chorus would not be enough to get us out of the deep slumber and start to stagger into the kitchen where Mother was cooking breakfast, so there would be a second round of that melodious wonder.

If that didn’t work, Mother would go to each room, turn on the overhead lights that each had a 300 watt bulb in both outlets and scream at the top of her lungs, “GET UP.” Wanting to avoid that unpleasant ear-splitting scene, we usually responded to the second chorus. It was just so much more pleasant.

There was a 95% chance it was the same breakfast each morning….scrambled eggs that had been in the pan so long that they were very close to dust…you kept them out of a direct breeze from a fan as they would scatter on the table. Bacon was a crapshoot. It could have Mother run one of her lighters up and down the outside of each piece and thrown them on the platter, or it might have been in a pan, cooked down to pieces so hard that they would give beef jerky a three legged race to the undertaker as to which was harder to chew. Toast was usually decent…there is very little you can really do to toast.

Surprisingly I look back on those times as good ones…but most people thought we were nuts. What Daddy didn’t know was that as soon as his car left the driveway we all went rushing back to bed and get in an hour or two more of sleep, then rise and go about our day.

The thing that continues to amaze me is that Daddy would even WANT to have breakfast with so many young, unpleasant, snarling children in the first place. Since there were so many of us, I suppose he looked at it as the one time he could have all of his chickadees in one place at the same time….and since we were on the edge of incoherence, he had a captive audience and could talk about all sorts of things.

The other thing is that he loved us. And on that count there was never any doubt.

“Good morning children, time to open up those eyes and let the sunshine come in and fertilize your brains!”

How to Take a Good Bikini Photo

Selfies and bikini shots get a bad name—they’re a little cheesy, and maybe a little braggy, but the fact of the matter is, they’re a fun record of our youth, whether we’re 21 or in our mid-40s with two kids. Some of them will be bad, and thanks to digital film (and hopefully good friends), most of those will get deleted. Some of them will be just meh, and we’ll look a little BBQ-and-beer-bloated in them. It’s OK that there are a few crummy pics of you out there in the world, though, especially if there are others where you look relaxed, happy, flattered, and damn sexy. So how do you get those photos? We asked three top bloggers for advice on poses and poise.
