EXCLUSIVE: Crooked I Criticizes Black Rappers For Being Afraid To Talk About Social Issues (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) With police brutality being a national news story for over a year and the 2016 presidential campaign dominating coverage, some Hip Hop artists have used their status to address social/political issues. “I just hate the way that Black rappers are scared to talk about what’s going on in America,” said Crooked. “They’re so tune into syrup, pills, weed, cars, women. If you take those subject matters away from them, they don’t rap about sh*t.”

The Slaughterhouse member also mentioned he is thinking about no longer using the word “n*gga.” In Crooked’s view, non-Black people are over abusing the n-word.

“When I say I don’t think you should say that, they say ‘well, you say it’.’ You Know what? I have to give some kind of credit to that comment,” explained Crooked.

Bishop TD Jakes, Evolved and Evolving on LGBT Issues

On Tuesday, Bishop TD Jakes sat down on HuffPost Live with host and Morehouse College Professor Marc Lamont Hill to talk about his new book Destiny. Step Into Your Purpose.

A viewer online sent in the following question: Do you think the LGBT community and the black church can co-exist?

Bishop Jakes replied: “Absolutely… I think it is going to be diverse from church to church. Every church has a different opinion on the issue and every gay person is different…. to think [each] are all the same is totally not true.”

Marc Lamont Hill pushed Bishop Jakes a bit further, asking “Has your thinking evolved on this?”

Bishop Jakes revealed: “Evolved and evolving… where I am is to better understand. We (the church) bought… into the myth that this is a Christian nation… We no longer look to public policy to reflect Biblical ethics.”

Hill kept up the line of questioning, bringing Bishop Jakes back to the conversation in the pews and in church Bible studies across the country:

So, that covers what happens outside the church. Inside the church, has your thinking Biblically, scripturally, hermeneutically shifted at all? Is there a way to approach Christian tradition [and] Christian scripture in light of a new understanding on LGBT? For example, [in the] 18th century, there might have been a particular understanding of what slavery meant – in relation to Paul, to the New Testament, et cetera. That has shifted to the point that… irrespective of what text says literally, we don’t support slavery as a body… Similarly, is there room for that same kind of shift?

Bishop Jakes responded: “I think that shift has to go on behind the closed doors of the church because I think in the mainstream America, we have a derogatory name to call you and I think it oversimplifies the complexity of the texts…”

Bishop – we need this conversation in the public square. We need leaders like you to help take our faith outside the doors of the church and beyond our private Bible studies into the streets, college dorms and coffee shops. Fellow sisters and brothers in black, white and brown churches are longing for this kind of dialogue, too.

Bishop ,  I minister in Portland, Ore. — one of the whitest, gayest, most non-religious cities in America, and I have to say, we need your leadership on this important conversation. Your humility on air with Marc Lamont Hill is an extraordinary demonstration of Christian leadership. Gay and straight Christians are longing for this kind of honest God-talk. Your conversation, guided by Professor Hill’s excellent line of questioning, is also an extraordinary opportunity for public theological discourse, something this country hasn’t seen since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the Niebuhr brothers were featured in such notable publications like Time Magazine in the 1940s and 1950s.

Bishop ,  we might totally disagree on this in the end. I’m decisively pro-inclusion. That said, we are still brothers in Christ. And, I have to be honest, my white elders — evangelical men and fellow travelers in your generation — remain silent or straight up antagonistic about these matters.

And I need your help.

Let me tell you, I’ve spent much of the summer in conversation and pastoral counsel with many LGBT believers, and even though your response on HuffPost Live lacks the clarity (and full inclusion, I am assuming) that so many long for, your pastoral tone and sensibility are long desired.

We also need your help navigating these important matters as we seek to be a church on the move in the 21st century for transformation, restoration and justice. Wether it is helping guide people towards healthy spirituality, sound financial management, racial righteousness or helping the poor, matters of LGBT inclusion will remain paramount for the next generation.

As we seek to be relevant, dynamic Christians, witnessing to our faith in a world full of doubt, despair and debate, help us do so charitably and boldly. Come on out of the closet of the church and help us navigate these troubled waters.

Bishop, keep talking as you are evolving!

Tyga’s Alleged Transgender Mistress Issues A Statement, Outed As An Escort? [Photos]

While Tyga is taking legal action against the culprit who leaked his genitals all across the Internet, his alleged transgender mistress, Mia Isabella, is breaking her silence for everything that’s being hurled her way. Earlier in the week, it was heavily rumored that the porn star was seeing the Young Money rapper at the same time as his current girlfriend, Kylie Jenner.

Isabella recently released a statement to VH1 (hmmm…reality show on the horizon?) to defend her character but not really debunk the allegations that set the Internet ablaze.

10 Male Celebrities Accused Of Loving On Transgender Females

It’s very sad that the idea of a man loving a trans person has to be considered a scandal when all people are equal – love always wins doesn’t it? I live in a world in my mind where everything is a fairy tale of love. Saddening to see small-minded thoughts travel so quickly like wildfire not knowing if its true or not. It’s like wave crashing over me washing over me to see masses of humanity rise with pitch forks blindly following. Are we not all equal? Am I not an American with the right to love and live as I choose with whoever I choose? If a celebrated man loves a transgender woman or possibly did that’s news? It shouldn’t be news it should be normal for anyone and everyone to be allowed to love who they choose. This person is not the man that I love but I have loved a few incredible and celebrated men in my life. I live my live in the open courageous and brave in my truth. I’ve been blessed to live in a time where my freedom has allowed me to create the woman I am today in my own image. If only everyone could be so brave. Unconditional love is godlike spreading hate simply a set back for humanity itself.

Just so we’re clear, she and Tyga “were in love” before Kylie? The bigger scandal was indeed Tyga’s supposed cheating ways but Hip-Hop Wired has gotten reports that Mia Isabella allegedly isn’t exactly the LGBT champion she’s claiming to be.

According to Proxy Public Relations, the adult actress goes by many names (Michael Levelle Davis, Jr. aka Michelle Levelle Davis aka Michele Levelle Davis aka Mia Michelle) and has posted her “services” on in the state of Washington. PPR also accuses Tyga’s baby mama Blac Chyna and celebrity publicist Gina Rodriguez for being involved in the caper.

Joan Jett Issues Statement On Runaways’ Jackie Fox Rape Allegations

Joan Jett, iconic rock star and former member of the all-female band the Runaways, said she was unaware her bandmate was raped by manager Kim Fowley 40 years ago.

Jett spoke out in a Facebook post Friday night, her first public comments since HuffPost reported former bassist Jacqueline Fuchs’ account of being attacked at age of 16. Fuchs said Jett was present during the assault.

“Anyone who truly knows me understands that if I was aware of a friend or bandmate being violated, I would not stand by while it happened.” Jett, who still performs with the Blackhearts, wrote on Facebook. “For a group of young teenagers thrust into ’70s rock stardom there were relationships that were bizarre, but I was not aware of this incident. Obviously Jackie’s story is extremely upsetting and although we haven’t spoken in decades, I wish her peace and healing.”

Fuchs, who played bass for the Runaways from 1975 to 1977 under the name of Jackie Fox, revealed to HuffPost’s Jason Cherkis that she was drugged at a New Year’s Eve party during her time with the band, and was raped by band manager and music industry heavyweight Kim Fowley. The claim was corroborated by several witnesses, including former Runaway lyricist Kari Krome. Fuchs had never spoken publicly about the attack before HuffPost’s report, published on Wednesday.

Fuchs said the rape took place in a California hotel room in the presence of bandmates Jett and Cherie Currie, along with numerous other partygoers. Fuchs said she had been given a Quaalude and was brutally violated by Fowley as she slipped in and out of consciousness.

“I can’t move. I can’t speak. All I can do is look him in the eye and do the best I can do to communicate: Please say no,” Fuchs recounted. “I don’t know what it looked like from the outside. But I know what was going on inside and it was horror.” She last remembered looking up to see Jett and Currie staring at her.

Brent Williams, who was also present in the hotel room, told HuffPost that he was asked by Jett to deny witnessing anything if contacted by lawyers.

Jett had denied “witnessing the event as it has been described here,” when presented with HuffPost’s reporting prior to the article’s publication. Her representative referred further questions to Fuchs, “as it’s a matter involving her and she can speak for herself.”

Fowley, who died in January, had been accused of assault by numerous women, some in their teens at the time. He was openly attracted to teenagers and vulnerable females: “I’m like a shark. I’ll smell the blood,” he said of himself. Former Runaway singer Cherie Currie described him as “a beast [who] should not be allowed near young girls.”

“It was the abuse from Kim Fowley and our roadies that was so hard to take. We got such abuse on a daily basis,” Currie told The Guardian in 2010. In her memoir, Currie wrote of Fowley having sex with a women in front of the band.

Kari Krome, a former Runaway who claimed to have witnessed the rape of Fuchs, revealed to HuffPost that Fowley assaulted her at his apartment, and a fan backstage at a 1975 show.

Fowley denied ever sexually assaulting any of the Runaways. “They can talk about it until the cows come home but, in my mind, I didn’t make love to anybody in the Runaways nor did they make love to me,” he said in a 2013 biography of the band, according to Yahoo News.  He was never charged in any of the alleged assaults.

Fuchs said she was inspired to break 40 years of silence after seeing other high-profile sexual assaults made public, such as claims against Bill Cosby.

Kathy Valentine, formerly of the groundbreaking all-female band the Go-Go’s, expressed support for Fuchs. “Jackie is incredibly brave for finally speaking out about this. I told her, and I will say it here too: she has done FAR more for women by speaking out than the Runaways ever did,” Valentine wrote on Facebook. Valentine said she understood why witnesses remained quiet immediately after the assault, writing, “They were glad it wasn’t them. He was their ticket to being rock stars, touring, recording — living their dream. They thought this was part of rock and roll, that she got this messed up, too bad for her.”

Love Is Love as Last State Issues First Gay Marriage License

Louisiana, the last state to issue a same-sex marriage license, was off to a romantic start this afternoon. The first license was issued to a couple who work for the Jefferson Parish Clerk of Court and have been watching for the state to comply with the Supreme Court’s Marriage Equality ruling. After being together for almost 40 years, Celeste Autin and Alesia LeBoeuf made history by obtaining the first same sex marriage license in Louisiana.

Following closely behind was the first couple to wed in New Orleans, after obtaining a marriage license from neighboring suburb Jefferson Parish. Michael Robins and Earl Benjamin proclaimed husband and husband “under the laws of this nation and the State of Louisiana.” “It’s great that it’s happening in a state that we both love, louisiana,” Robinson told the assembled press. The waiting period was waived by the judge, and the couple said their next destination is Disney World.

In honor of Marriage Equality making it to Louisiana, New Orleans native John Boutte soulfully sings Love is Love in a track (full disclosure) written and produced by my husband Jeff with Three Cranes Productions, part of the proceeds going to It Gets Better. Artwork by L. Steve Williams, Jr.

As music critic Alison Fensterstock suggests: “Lie down in a meadow and hold someone’s hand while you listen. ” Or throw some rice at Louisiana’s new wave of newlyweds.

Why Couples Fight: The Top 5 Issues

I love to talk about love — even some of the darker parts of coupledom like arguments, fights and problems. After all, without the dark we wouldn’t have the light!

Most of us don’t realize that there are patterns to how we fight…and make-up if we so choose to work at it. Ask yourself:

Are you having the same fight over and over again?

Your arguments might be more common than you think. Can you relate to this awesome video?

The Science of Fighting

According to Marriage and Family counselor Dr. John Gottman, a true expert in this field, 69 percent of marriage conflicts are never solved. Yes, 69 percent!

That means that we are often having the same fight over and over again.

This is actually good news. Why? If we have similarities or patterns to our fights it means a) we are not alone and b) we can study, predict and course-correct our arguments before they explode.

Dr. John Gottman has over 40 years of research with over 3,000 married couples. He calls these unresolved issues ‘gridlocked’. Watch this video for more:

Gridlocked Issue: A common topic that comes up for a couple that cannot be resolved and typically devolves into a nasty argument.

The Top 5 Issues Couples Fight About:

What do most couples fight about? Here are the 5 most common issues:

  • Free Time

  • Money

  • Housework

  • Physical Intimacy

  • Extended Family

Fighting Solutions:

Here are some ways you can use the science of couples to help your relationship:

1. The New Mindset

How to Fight Better: I want us to shift the focus to fighting ‘better’ as opposed to fighting less. Why? Fighting better is about having discussions, not arguments. It is about respectfully hearing the other person when perpetual problems come up. It’s also a lot of pressure to try to fight less. We all want to fight less, but the point of this article is to deepen understanding and that can mean discussing more.

2. Identify Your Issues

One of the most interesting discussions I have ever had with my husband was identifying our ‘perpetual issues’. We sat down and thought about the problems and topics that have come up recently and looked for patterns. Did any of them fall into the top 5 above? Were there any common threads or underlying themes to our arguments. The answer — yes. We didn’t realize it at first, but we were basically having the same 3 arguments over and over again with different dressing.

  • Sit down with your partner (or with a journal by yourself) and review all of the arguments you have had recently or any big blow-up fights over the last few months. Try to identify the patterns under the arguments.

  • Once you have identified your patterns, clearly delineate each partner’s side of the argument. Do this in non-judgmental terms. For example, an issue could be ‘spending.’ Husband likes to treat himself to little dinners out regularly, whereas Wife likes to save up for big treats. Neither is ‘wrong’ but this way you know where you both stand.

3. Localize Don’t Globalize

One reason that little arguments can erupt so quickly is because a small disagreement can be tagged onto one of your larger arguments and immediately explode into the big fight. You already know your issues and where the other stands, so it is very important to keep small arguments compartmentalized and specific to the situation. This can help you focus on the issue and keep the discussion as just that — a discussion. Since you know you have fundamental differences on the larger argument, there is no reason to bring it into everyday discussions.

  • Try to avoid globalizing the other person or their behavior. Try not to say “You always do this” or “This is your pattern” or “You never…”

  • Don’t call up past arguments or offenses. I know it’s hard, but it will only exacerbate an issue that is gridlocked (devolving into a larger fight).

And by the way, you aren’t the only couple who fights about your issues:

4. Start with Agreement

If a gridlocked issue comes up on a daily basis and you need to approach it, start with agreement. Dr. Gottman noticed that successful couples who have been together for a long time master gentleness. They present issues in a soft way by never starting with criticism. In fact, starting with agreement is the best way to avoid an argument and start a discussion. Find something you can agree upon and start there.

  • For example, if you have family coming in for the weekend and Wife wants a hotel, but Husband wants house-guests, Wife could say, “I know we can agree that family time is important and I know we can both get a little annoyed when we are overrun with nieces and nephews. Let’s try to think of a way to make this weekend work.”

5. Look Underneath the Argument

This is the hardest one, but the most important. Sometimes there are underlying issues beneath the gridlocked issue. I want you to think about what’s happening behind the argument. Are there value-based differences? You might actually be arguing about basic philosophical concepts like someone’s sense of self, power, freedom, care, what family means, what home means or control. Look at your gridlocked issue and ask the question “Why?” 5 times. *Be sure to get buy-in to do this from both people, so it is exploratory not antagonistic. For example:

  • Wife: I am very upset right now.

  • Man: Why?

  • Wife: I need more help around the house.

  • Man: Why do you feel that way?

  • Wife: I feel overworked and overwhelmed with the stuff that needs to be done.

  • Man: Why do you feel overwhelmed?

  • Wife: It just feels like it all lands on me at the end of the day.

  • Man: Why do you feel it all lands on you?

  • Wife: I don’t see you offering to help and that makes me frustrated.

  • Man: Why does that happen?

  • Wife: It makes me feel under-appreciated.

Ok, now they are onto something! Yes, help around the house is great, but it all boils down to feeling under appreciated. If the husband were to make the wife feel more appreciated — perhaps thanking her for what has already been done, that might be even more beneficial than helping. Combining help and gratitude could be the ultimate healer in this fight.

6. Acceptance

Knowing your issues and where you stand can help prevent you from having the argument over and over again. Agreeing to disagree and naming the issue can prevent arguments in the future. For example, I was walking a couple through this exercise and this process happened:

  • Common Issue: Vacationing with the in-laws. Husband doesn’t like to vacation with his in-laws, Wife does.

  • Localize: Trip to Hawaii over Thanksgiving

  • Agreement: We both know we need a vacation and we are due for an in-law visit.

  • Why’s: Wife learns that the reason Husband doesn’t like to vacation with the in-laws has nothing to do with them. He loves the in-laws! But he wants more couple time. “We are so busy during the work week that our vacations are the only alone time we get together.”

  • Acceptance: This is a difference in preference — it is not an attack on the in-laws or a desire not to vacation together. A possible compromise to recognize the underlying need for alone time could be to go on vacation a few days early before the in-laws arrive.

  • Success!

You want your perpetual issues to be more like the crazy uncle who shows up unannounced and less like the hidden rabid dog in the closet. In other words, the more your issue is talked about, tolerated and discussed, the easier and less trap-filled it will be.

Sometimes it feels like talking about the nitty-gritty side of romance is taboo, but I think when we explore the issues we learn and benefit. Let’s bring the light to the dark.

Taryn Manning Says Laverne Cox Taught The ‘OITNB’ Cast A Lot About Trans Issues

Actress and LGBT advocate Laverne Cox has made quite an impression on her “Orange Is The New Black” co-stars.

Taryn Manning, aka Pennsatucky, stopped by “The HuffPost Show” on Friday and said that Cox’s wise words about gay and trans issues have helped many of show’s actors and actresses understand the nuances of the LGBT community.

“I’ve never had a big angle on [LGBT issues] until actually I met Laverne, really, because she’s a public speaker and she’s amazing. You can really learn a lot from her,” said Manning, whose new film “Cleveland Abduction” airs on Lifetime May 2nd.

As Manning explained, the cast would often sit with Cox to listen to her thoughts on various LGBTQ issues.

“Our minds would be blown, just to know how complicated it all is,” Manning told told co-hosts Roy Sekoff and Marc Lamont Hill.

Telling Women That Men Find Curves Attractive Is Not The Way To Solve Body Issues

One man thinks he’s found the answer to solving women’s body image problems: male approval.

Child health expert Aric Sigman told The Telegraph that in order to combat the “neurosis” young women have about their bodies — specifically about being fat — educators should be enlisting young men to tell their slightly younger female peers what they find attractive about women.

“Boys don’t have in any way near as rigid a view on what an attractive figure should be and they value many other physical qualities, including eyes, hair, and body language,” Sigman told The Telegraph.

“An increase in fat on hips, thighs and bottoms is not only natural but good for girls because it is appealing to males,” said Dr. Sigman. “It protects girls from heart disease and diabetes and the great news is that men like that body fat on women.”

Fact: Body dissatisfaction is at epidemic levels among young women. Research has shown that over 80 percent of American 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat, and a 2015 study showed that 80 percent of this same demographic have been on a diet.

Other fact: Using male approval as a short-term fix for these systemic issues is not the answer.

As The Guardian’s Hadley Freeman sarcastically put it: “If there’s one thing women around the world have been lacking, it’s men telling them exactly what they find attractive in a lady.”

Women learn from an early age that what matters most is how our bodies look. No matter how hard we try to control that image, and no matter what genetic lottery we’ve been dealt, it’s an impossible game to win. Real women have curves, but at the same time, nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. We are collectively, acutely aware that our wages, love lives and our overall value as women are impacted greatly by what’s on the outside.

And therein lies the real issue: We live in a world where the female body is the ultimate arbiter of worth. Tying the solution to women’s anxieties about their bodies only serves to reinforce the underlying problem.

Sigman’s ideas also seem to assume that a) all young women are attracted to men, and b) that young men don’t experience body dysmorphia. Spoiler alert! Young women who aren’t straight and young people who aren’t female still grapple with shame and stigma when it comes to their bodies. A 2014 study found that nearly 18 percent of boys expressed concern about their bodies or weight.

Luckily, there are plenty of men and women who do understand these nuances and are doing work that could really make a difference in these arenas. (Tess Munster’s Eff Your Beauty Standards project and Nikolay Lamm’s “Normal Barbie” are just two of many.)

Combatting body image issues requires more than assuring young women that random dudes in the grade above them may find them sexually attractive. We are more than our bodies. Let’s start looking for solutions to these issues that recognize that.

Science Fails Again (to communicate) on Gender Issues

As a clarification, I have little interest in the politics of gender discrimination in the workplace. But the psychology of it fascinates me like few things have.

I doubt I have seen worse arguments on both sides of an issue. Most people identify as either a man or a woman, so the “my team” problem overwhelms our rational capacity. No one, including me, can come anywhere near objectivity on this issue. So how do you make rational decisions on a topic in which no human has even the slightest potential to be rational?

I like the challenge. And few people would be reckless enough to go where I plan to go on this.

Every time I see an article on the Internet about gender issues in the workplace, I see these two opposing comments:

1. There are many studies that show gender bias. For example, teachers give better grades on math tests to male students, but the difference vanishes when the tests have no name on them. Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In, has lots of references to similar study results, or so I hear. And Vivian Giang got some of you riled up with examples here

2. Another set of folks (all men) invariably point me to studies that suggest there is no pay difference between men and women once you adjust for experience and time on the job. And I hear there are studies saying there is no difference for younger women just entering the workplace.

How can both views be true?

So I declare a link war.

I appoint myself the judge in this contest. Give me links to studies that support your point of view. I will assess those studies and pick a winner. Or I might declare that the studies are not clear when viewed in total. I will ask any interested parties (including Vivian Giang) to comment on the reliability and usefulness of the studies.

I have no idea how this will turn out. But I think you need to know my starting bias to assess my judging skills.

Keep in mind that the POINT of this is my ignorance. And my bias. I put it on full display for you because I think that is helpful on this issue. If you don’t know what others are thinking, you can not hope to communicate effectively. So as a public service, I present my biased, ignorant, male perspective. But I am open to revising my opinion based on data. Would you ask any more of me?

Here is my starting bias:

1. Gender discrimination in the workplace is a big problem, according to some types of studies and countless first-hand accounts. With so much smoke, I assume there is fire.

2. The problem of gender discrimination is curiously invisible to men, and that includes me. All I see is a confused ball of incomplete thinking on all sides. But that tells us nothing about how big the problem is. Cognitive dissonance is a reasonable hypothesis for why lots of folks fail to see the obvious. I see no reason to exclude myself from the ranks of the deluded.

3. My working hypothesis is that studies showing gender bias in controlled tests don’t translate into the workplace as pay differentials — at least in this country — because educated adults are on the alert for gender bias. So we use our reason to compensate for the bias, if for no other reason than to avoid lawsuits. Any time I am involved in hiring, the risk of unintentional bias is always top of mind. And since men have a biological impulse to be successful and powerful to attract quality mates, hiring the right employees (and avoiding lawsuits) is in our best interest.

4. Some men are bullies and assholes. And most men are assholes at least some of the time. When men are bullies and assholes to each other, we interpret it as exactly that. But if I observe those same bullies and assholes mistreating a woman, I interpret it as sexism. I assume others see it the same way.

5. I have also blogged that I think women should have a few superior rights to men because they handle the vital function of reproduction. In general, society grants extra rights to folks who take on extra responsibility. That’s why cops can speed, soldiers can kill, and so on. One example of extra rights in this context is that I think only women should have a vote on abortion laws.

Things get thornier when you are talking about a workplace with pregnant women, potentially pregnant women, and moms. Big companies can absorb some extra friction for the larger benefit of society, but small ones do not have that option. If you own a small business, you don’t want to have two of your three employees out on maternity leave at the same time, to pick a worst-case scenario. A rational small business owner will discriminate in that case and hope to get away with it. And a rational victim of discrimination in that case will sue. That part of the story seems clear to everyone. And I have not heard a proposed solution. But if a proposed solution provided superior rights for women without hurting small businesses, I can imagine that working for me.

6. The other day a good friend who works as a massage therapist was describing a time in her past she was a victim of gender discrimination. The story sounded convincing to me. Then I asked if she knew I would not have considered her as my massage therapist if she were a man.

Cricket noises.

Personally, I have willfully discriminated by gender in my business dealings at least … oh, a hundred times. And every time it was in favor of women, simply because I prefer the energy. I spend way too much time with men because of shared interests. I need balance in my life, so I bend the rules to get it. I have never considered using a male real estate broker, for example. I get the same service from a woman and it is a great break from the dude-centric rest of my life.

My larger point today is that any discussion of gender in the workplace is like two blind people standing on an elephant and arguing whether the elephant is a sandwich or a bar of soap. Both are 100% wrong. That includes me.

Evolution did not give us brains that can comprehend our reality. All we have is the type of brains that did not get our ancestors killed. So our brains create delusions of reality and we try to force reason onto them. That’s why men and women are looking at the same elephant but one sees a bar of soap and the other sees a sandwich.

Is it possible to get to a clearer view of this topic? THAT is the interesting part to me. This is in the category of things that cannot be communicated, which is a big interest of mine.

Part of the problem is that anyone dumb enough to engage in this topic becomes a target for the angry villagers with pitchforks. The only reason I can be this reckless is that I already made all the money I will ever need and I feel as if getting some clarity on this topic would be a public good. And seriously, who else would even try to be objective on this topic in public? This is a suicide mission.

And if you think any of this is good for traffic to my site, you would be wrong. There will be a two-day traffic bump followed by 5% of regular readers swearing off this site for good. That is the usual pattern for a hot topic here.

Ladies and gentlemen, please provide your links and your insights on gender bias and discrimination in the workplace. I will compile them in summary form and give my verdict.

Long-winded comments will be ignored unless the first sentence or two are awesome.

Let’s do this.

In other news, a start-up called EnChroma figured out how to make glasses that correct color blindness. As a bonus, the glasses also make colors pop for everyone else too. Will spectacles start replacing contacts and laser eye surgery because the color you see with these glasses is so much better? Could happen.

And what about a finger-attached device for the blind that reads aloud what they point to on a page? This is a good year for people with vision problems.

Sha Money Issues Statement, Epic Records To Bail Bobby Shmurda Out

Bobby Shmurda’s label has his back, as Epic Records has decided to bail the rapper out of jail.

A lawyer for the rapper revealed that the legendary label would get him out of the jail as the 20-year-old faces a number of charges that include drugs, gun, attempted murder and murder.

Sha Money XL, the Epic executive that signed Shmurda, was present at the time of the arrest. He expressed his disenchantment with the whole ordeal and also cleared up some rumors.

“I was not arrested. They held me until they searched the studio then let me go. I signed these kids to give them a better way in life not to be dragged down by the media and gunned down by the 40 cops that raided the studio and pointed guns at me for working my job. You have no idea how this makes me feel or look when I’m one of the only few black men signing black artist from the streets and giving them a chance to do better in life.”

Dean Meminger, a reporter in the New York area, said there were multiple task forces working to bust Shmurda and company.

Producer Gary Janetti Talks New PBS Sitcom Vicious and LGBT Issues (AUDIO)

2014-07-02-HuffVicious.jpgThis week I talked with writer/producer Gary Janetti (Will & Grace, Family Guy) about his fabulous new PBS sitcom Vicious. Legendary openly gay actors Sir Derek Jacobi and Sir Ian McKellen play Stuart and Freddie, partners who have lived together in their central-London flat for nearly 50 years. Behind the façade of hilariously snide remarks regarding each other’s age, appearance and flaws, a deep love for one another is revealed. This groundbreaking sitcom tells the story of an older gay couple and their longtime circle of friends as they struggle to maintain their visibility and significance in our youth-oriented world. The ensemble cast also includes their feisty best friend Violet, played by Frances de la Tour, and Ash, played by Iwan Rheon, their young, impressionable upstairs neighbor.

I talked with Janetti about taking on relevant aging issues in this comedic format, and about his spin on LGBT equality. When asked what he would like to accomplish with this show, he stated:

What I want to accomplish is not only that this is a gay couple — the fact that they were gay was always besides the point — it’s also a couple of a certain age. We don’t see couples in their 70s together not as an archon to the young couple on the show but as the main focus of the show. And their world is also populated by people around the same age as them, and they are the people we follow. We’re inside their world, and it’s unusual, and I don’t think it should be unusual. There was something about that I felt really good about accomplishing. Also that they were a gay couple of a certain age and within the gay community. These are men in their 70s, and they have been clearly out, certainly to each other and their closest group of friends, for 50 years. What does that mean 50 years ago? How difficult was it to be out 50 years ago, to live with another man at that time, in the 1960s? And I think these people and those stories we don’t often hear a lot of, they’re heroic, to give center stage to a couple that might sometimes seem anonymous, these couples that you see at times on the subway, or walking down the street, or in a little restaurant, and you wonder what their life was like. This is an opportunity to kind of go inside, and for better or for worse, you see what this relationship is.

Gary Janetti co-created, wrote and executive produced Vicious for ITV. It was shot before a live audience in the UK and has already been renewed for a second season. Vicious can be seen on PBS Sundays at 10:30 p.m. Janetti and his partner, celebrity stylist Brad Goreski, have been together for 13 years.

Seth Rogen Charges Macklemore with Anti-Semitism, but Fails to See the Issues in His Own Film

I wish that we could stop talking about this. Contrary to popular belief, black people really don’t enjoy protesting and complaining about every act of racial offense that comes our way. I know I don’t. And because we live in a country with such a history of racial injustice as the United States, which still refuses to deal with much of that history and its present effects, to get up in arms about every offensive incident would be to remain in a constant state of distress.

That’s why, when I was confronted with the use of the dreaded n-word at an advanced screening of Seth Rogen’s comedy Neighbors, I was hesitant to respond. In the movie, comedian Ike Barinholtz fires off the word twice in his improvised lines — once when reciting the lyrics to an Outkast song and again when mimicking, of all people, President Barack Obama. Not only did the lines seem unfunny in that white-guy-trying-too-hard-to-be-edgy sort of way, but it was also unsettling to see this character use a racial slur on screen with such abandon, knowing that this film will eventually make its way overseas and millions of people will see it when all is said and done.

Perhaps you could argue that since some black people use the n-word themselves, this isn’t a big deal. But whether you feel that the word should be used by anyone, there’s no denying that it’s a generations-old racial slur, widely considered off-limits for white folks, and offensive to the point of being censored on national television.

Here’s the thing. I’m not a humorless activist. I get that entertainment, and especially comedy, can be risqué and should be seen in context. So immediately I wondered if people would catch Barinholtz’ lines, and whether they would care. As it turns out, a lot of folks are easily impressed. Christopher Rosen of the Huffington Post applauded Barinholtz’ use of the word, as well as cracking a rape joke, saying, “That Barinholtz manages to navigate those tricky waters, landing big laughs in the process, is a credit to his comic dexterity.”

When The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Neighbors star and producer Rogen about Barinholtz’ “boundary-pushing humor,” he responded:

On set, you have to do stuff that makes people uncomfortable. You have to always shoot stuff that’s less than that. I don’t mean genuinely uncomfortable, but there’s something in your head that says, ‘This is f—ed up’… We’ll always push the envelope. If we have an idea and it makes us laugh, we’ll film it.

Given this logic, it came as a surprise when rapper Macklemore recently donned a costume that was considered offensive to Jews, and Rogen was among the first to accuse him of anti-Semitism. For a surprise performance at EMP Museum in Seattle on Friday, Macklemore reportedly “thought it would be fun to dress up in a disguise and go incognito to the event,” and wore a getup with an oversized nose, dark wig and beard that many thought looked like a Jewish stereotype.

Rogen apparently thought so, and lashed out via Twitter:

Some may not see the connection between these two situations, but I’d argue that Barinholtz using a slur that offends black folks, and Macklemore donning a getup that offends Jews, are strikingly similar. The difference is that according to Macklemore, he had no idea that his costume would be perceived as offensive, whereas Barinholtz, Rogen, and most of those affiliated with Neighbors knew what they were doing and chose to forge ahead anyway, even patting themselves on the back for doing so.

The other difference is in how we respond. Macklemore has been taken to task and has since apologized for donning his offensive costume, but there’s been no such stir over Neighbors. Sitting in a darkened theater of mostly white audience members, I had to wonder why, when a term offensive to my people is tossed around for comic effect, it’s met with uproarious laughter. I had to wonder why it either slips past people entirely, or worse, gets commended as edgy or innovative; but yet when there’s even the perception that something is offensive to Jews, it’s suddenly time to take a stand against racial insensitivity.

Why Seth Rogen, is it wrong to offend your people, but not mine?

Or maybe the more troubling question is, why does a racial slur against my people not even count as offensive?

Again, humor is a layered and complex thing, and should be considered in context. But in this case, the hypocrisy is abundantly clear. You don’t get to celebrate racial insensitivity towards one group and condemn racial insensitivity towards another. If we’re ever going to realize the “post-racial America” that so many are claiming, we have to learn to fight ignorance and insensitivity towards everyone.
