Genre: Romantic Comedy

Publish Date: September 1, 2015

Publisher: Jenny Gardiner Books

Seller: Draft2Digital, LLC

It’s time to get your royal on with the first three books in the It’s Reigning Men series from bestselling author Jenny Gardiner, available together for the very first time! SOMETHING IN THE HEIR Sometimes a girl’s gotta sweep a prince off his feet… He’s a prince with a problem, she’s a commoner with a getaway plan. Modern-day Prince Adrian of Monaforte has a most old-fashioned problem: his demanding mother wants him wed to her best friend’s daughter, the hard-partying Serena. When his refusal falls on deaf ears, Adrian decides it’s time for him to slip away from his gilded cage and figure out his life, all on his own. As luck would have it, event photographer Emma Davison, weary of a revolving door of lost-cause men and tired of her outsider-looking-in career, is in need of her own escape clause, just in time to help a wayward prince in need. And she soon discovers that sometimes a girl’s gotta sweep a prince off his feet. For any girl that’s ever held out hope that some day her prince would come…or better yet, hoped that some day she’d come to him. HEIR TODAY GONE TOMORROW It's all fun and royal games until somebody's heart gets hurt In his line of work, royal heir Darcy Squires-Thornton has always been content playing second fiddle to close friend Prince Adrian, and happy, too, with whatever brief romantic encounters come his way. Especially one with carefree Caroline McKenzie, whose best friend is engaged to the prince, whose motto has always been "love the one you're with". But when the one she's no longer with is the one with whom she's fallen in love, what's a girl an ocean away to do? BAD TO THE THRONE Sometimes you can let your heir down a little too much… When wild-child Prince Alexander goes on a naked bender in a Vegas swimming pool, cocktail waitress Andi McDonough decides to preserve a shot of those family jewels on her phone. But when she’s fired for capturing the royal treasures, she heads off to find herself. After backpacking the world-over on a dime and a prayer, she finds herself in Rome, where a chance encounter with the wayward prince only reinforces to her that Prince Zander is indeed bad to the throne. And more than likely to her fragile heart as well.

Should I Stay or Should I Go? How to Know When It’s Time to Leave a Relationship

There are actually many signs, if we pay attention. But signs or not, we might hesitate to leave a relationship out of insecurity or uncertainty. We may doubt ourselves and wonder if it’s really the right thing to do. We wonder if we should give our partner one more chance, even though we’ve already given him a hundred before that. In a bad relationship, we can lose sight of our direction, get derailed from our life, disconnected from our friends, our family, and our work, and still find ourselves struggling to make that difficult and FINAL decision… even though in our heart of hearts… we know.

The truth is, if we get quiet within ourselves, and really listen, we always know if something or someone is right for us. Not only that, we probably have known right from the start. If we remember back to when we first met, we can remember that those doubts and concerns were there in the first two or three meetings. But as time went by, we may have downplayed those concerns, covering them over with hopeful thinking. But if we are really honest with ourselves…we knew.

Don’t feel badly though, that you may have put a soft filter on the state of the relationship. You are human after all. You were giving them the benefit of the doubt. You were giving them a chance. You were “waiting and seeing.” And that is only right. You can only discover what the nature of a relationship is by being in it. However, there can come a point in a relationship where you can see that it is clearly not working. And as you realize this, there comes from deep within yourself, a seismic inner nudge that is encouraging you, showing you, reminding you, sometimes even shouting at you, that it is time to take action.

Because of the complexity of intimacy and the intricate dance of relationship, we can be confused about what to do, when to do it, or even if we should. But once realized, the sooner is the better — like before you buy a house together, or conceive a child, or change your lives so radically that it is practically impossible to back up.

It is true; it is hard to always gauge accurately when things are not working — really not working. But once you recognize that the connection is not strong enough to hold, and that the two of you are not able to work through it, then it is time to let go of the relationship.

So, instead of prolonging or procrastinating, when you finally have the courage to know what you know, and really, to know what you knew all along — then it becomes easier to have “the conversation” that really was inevitable.

I could have titled this blog When to Let Go. There is an art to life, and one of the graces of life is to know when to let go. The longer you delay, the more suffering there will be. If a relationship is really not working and has become untenable, then for everyone’s sake you need to release it. This mindful act of conscious closure then, actually becomes a gift of compassion to both of you. And, by doing so, it sets you both free to find real happiness.

L.A. Reid On Not Bailing Bobby Shmurda Out: “It’s A Different Day”

Epic Records CEO L.A. Reid has been enduring some criticism for not bailing out breakout label star Bobby Shmurda after his arrest late last year on a bevy of charges. Reid explained his reasons for not bailing out the troubled rapper while explaining the times have changed.

Shmurda, who is currently awaiting trial, has been in jail since last December after investigators pegged him as the ringleader of a violent New York-based Crips gang known as GS9. Fellow rap artist Rowdy Rebel and other members of the GS9 gang have also been arrested and charged since Shmurda’s downfall. Reid has kept relatively mum about the developments in the case but shared more details in an interview with the good folks over at Rap Radar.

From The Urban Daily:

“Well, it made me feel like people don’t know anything about my business, right? It’s really not their business. That’s the truth about it, right? Um, we’re not elected officials here. And we’re not at liberty to disclose how we do business. It’s fair practice, I can tell you that. But, it’s not the industry that it once was. We seriously don’t make the money we used to make. That’s a fact of life, right?

“Bobby Shmurda is not the same as Snoop Dogg and Murder Was The Case, who’s coming off The Chronic and his first album. It’s a different era, ya know? And, we’re a publicly held corporation. We just aren’t in the same position we were in back in those days. So, it’s a different day.”

What It’s Like To Quit A Job, Travel To Another Country, And Search For Something Deeper

Reshma, a young Indian-American woman from Chicago, says she always felt like something was missing in her chaotic life.

“I just go to work, come home, eat dinner by myself, wake up the next morning and do it all over again. I don’t think God meant for us to live this way,” explains Reshma, 32, in the video above.

So she quit her job, said goodbye to her family, and traveled to her spiritual homeland, India, in hopes of finding a deeper connection to herself, to other human beings, and to her religion.

Reshma’s search took her to the banks of the Ganges River for the Kumbh Mela, where every 12 years, millions of pilgrims flock to the river to wash away their sins and purify their souls. While she was there, Reshma says something extraordinary happened, which she reveals on OWN’s upcoming documentary series, “Belief.” Check local listings here.

“I had seen the ‘Planet Earth’ years ago on Discovery, and I wanted to be able to create for the spirit what ‘Planet Earth’ was for our physical world,” Oprah Winfrey says of her new series, which premieres Sunday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. “Reshma was one of those stories. There are a lot of people who feel disconnected from themselves, who feel like their life is not whole.”

For Reshma, the search was worthwhile. “I found connection,” she explains. “I really was looking for a sense of peace, and compassion, and love and connection to other human beings, and through that, I found the connection to myself I was looking for.”

This Is What It’s Really Like To Have A Late-Term Abortion

By Lindsey Averill

As #shoutyourabortion trends on social media, encouraging women to shed their shame over having chosen abortion, I have my own story to tell.

A little over a year ago, my husband, Randy and I were all smiles as the nurse in the perinatologist’s office called my name and then ushered us into an exam room. We were there for an anatomy ultrasound. I was 21 weeks pregnant. I already knew I was having a little girl. We were throwing around names like Madison and Lexi.

pregnant
Yay! Pregnant!

For so many, the ultrasound between 20 and 21 weeks is magical. This is the one. The scan where the abstract images on the little screen stop looking like a blob or a tadpole with limbs and start looking like a baby. This is the moment when you can see a spine, fingers, toes and facial features. This is the ultrasound photo that makes it to people’s Facebook feeds.

I don’t remember the technician’s name, but when she came into the room, Randy and I were chit-chatty and excited. I told her my dad was an OB/GYN, as she covered my belly in cool gel and then before I knew it, our little girl was projected onto the screen on the wall across from us. Cheerful and pleasant, the technician pointed out our baby’s details as she snapped frozen ultrasound pictures.

baby photo
A photo to record the moment we found out I was pregnant.

The tech pointed, “Ooh. There’s a little hand.” As an obstetrician’s kid, I’d seen my fair share of ultrasounds, but nothing could prepare me for this one. I looked to Randy — total rapture, smiling ear to ear. The tech pointed again, “Her feet.”

And then there was a shift. I felt it. The tech was measuring and re-measuring the baby’s head. It was taking too much work. She asked me to shift positions. She firmly pressed the transducer into my belly — so deep that it hurt.

“How many weeks are you?” she asked.

“Twenty one.”

“Are you sure?”

I was sure.

The ultrasound tech finished the scan and the machine printed out a series of pictures for us to take home. She handed them to Randy, smiled and said the doctor would be in to see us in a few minutes.

When were alone, I started babbling.

“Everything’s fine.” I said.

“We already ruled out all the really bad stuff,” I said.
“It’s nothing, right?” I looked to Randy. He nodded reassuringly, cradled the photos in his arms and tenderly rocked them.

It wasn’t fine.

Her brain wasn’t fully formed and there was also something wrong with her heart. As the doctor explained, I stayed solid. I asked questions – clinical, doctor’s kid questions – and then my voice started to shake as I asked, “So, there is no chance that this baby is healthy?” Then I apologized for getting upset. Ridiculous.

In true doctor speak he replied, “Well, there is always a chance — but if I had to make the call, I’d say this development is not normal.”

We left the doctor’s office in a haze. Within hours, I was surrounded by my family, and I had spoken to my OB/GYN, my father, and a neonatal neurologist. All of these people had looked at my ultrasound images and the consensus was nothing good. No one could or would give me details, but everyone kept saying that my baby – the baby I could literally feel moving in my belly – would not be anywhere near okay.

Together, Randy and I made the decision to not bring our daughter into the world.

Getting an abortion at 21-plus weeks in South Florida isn’t so easy. There is a clinic about an hour from my house that is surrounded by pro-life picketers daily. Devastated, heartbroken and every other word you can think of that means emotionally crushed, I couldn’t imaging crossing a picket line and hearing people scream hate at me.

Also, the procedure at this point in a pregnancy is a long process, complicated and potentially life-threatening. I wanted to be in a hospital, just in case. No such thing exists in the sunshine state.

I am lucky. I have the money to afford choices and people I could call, people in Connecticut and New York, doctors and friends. We made a plan. Within twenty-four hours, I had an appointment to begin the procedure at 1pm six days later at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, and a plane ticket to get there.

I tried to say goodbye to the baby in my belly and accept my choice, but I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. Sometimes it felt hard to breathe. Randy had the opposite reaction. He couldn’t stop sleeping. We were a mess. We went to the movies — we saw “Chef.” I was angry that it was happy.

The days passed, and I felt like my body failed her. I failed her. I felt like I was making an uninformed parental decision — and it was killing me. I had so much fear. I couldn’t stop searching the internet for statistics. How many people got a diagnosis like mine and went on to have a healthy baby? Was there a possibility that the doctors were wrong? Online there were testimonials. There were people who had frightening ultrasounds at twenty weeks and made the other choice and their babies were okay.

My mother was sleeping at my house – we were both getting on a plane to go to New York in a few hours, and I was crazed. There was no way I was having the procedure without a second opinion. I made another call, this time to my father – and with help from the Maternal Fetal Medicine doctor (MFM) at my dad’s hospital, I went to the best MFM at NYU at 7am on the day of the procedure for a second opinion.

The doctor in New York was certain. Part of my baby’s brain was missing, all the vessels into her heart were fused. She didn’t have a nose and her potential for life after birth was called both limited and painful.

I aborted my baby to end the pain, her future pain, my pain, my husband’s pain, the pain of the people who loved us. I aborted her because if I carried her to term she would have died and taken my sanity with her. I aborted my baby because it was the best choice. As far as I was concerned it was the only choice.

procedure
Relieved the procedure was over and I was safe.

It was also a choice that I had access to only because of my privileges as the daughter of upper middle class, educated people and the personal economic advantages that such a life affords me. I was always pro-choice, but before this experience I was wishy-washy about late-term abortion — even with my adjacent medical knowledge. I wasn’t sure I agreed, but I could understand how people believed that late-term abortions were uncivilized.

I now find that I know the opposite to be true. I will forever be a voice willing to fight for why late-term abortions must remain legal.

Letting her go still hurts. And so far there is not a happy ending here — we haven’t gone on to have a healthy baby. But there is one thing that I am certain of. The option for a safe late-term abortion was a blessing for me. I feel no shame about the choice I made and I would never make a different choice, not in a million years.

Woman Photoshops Celebs Over Pics Of Her Ex, And It’s Hilarious

Photographer and TV writer Kaitlin Kelly has a lot of great photos of herself saved on her computer. Unfortunately, many of them include her ex.

Or at least they used to include her ex. When a friend jokingly suggested she swap celebrities into the pics, the 25-year-old was game for the challenge. Why let a perfectly good photo go to waste when you could have Jamie Dornan in it?

Or Tom Hardy and “Outlander” hottie Sam Heughan with their arms around you?

Kelly, who lives in Los Angeles, told The Huffington Post she was surprised how cathartic it felt to add the celebs into her old pics.

“Humor truly is the best medicine,” she said. “Seeing the photos makes me laugh and there’s nothing like laughter to make you forget bad memories or awkwardness.”

Soon, she gave the same treatment to pictures of her ex-girlfriend. Here’s a night out with Megan Fox!

And a cozy scene with Cobie Smulders:

Eventually, requests started coming in from people who appreciated Kelly’s Photoshop skills and wanted some pics of their own redone. Here’s one woman with her main squeeze, Lenny Kravitz … and her other main squeeze, Tyson Beckford:

Here’s someone else with her boo, Andrew Garfield:

If you’d like Kelly to work her magic on your photos, you’ll be happy to hear that she’s currently setting up an Etsy shop to field requests. (In the meantime, send a message through her photography website.)

“So far I’ve gotten hundreds of stories e-mailed to me through my website, telling me about horrible breakups and bad exes — sort of like a relationship confessional,” she said. “It feels really amazing to help people.”

See more of Kelly’s hilarious (and healing!) work below.

Junot Diaz On Why It’s So Important To Read Authors Who Don’t Look Like You

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Junot Diaz (The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao) has a very simple way of helping young students understand the complexities of the world.

The writer, of Dominican roots, stopped by “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Thursday night, and discussed several of his teaching methods as a Creative Writing professor at MIT and why he feels it’s so important for students to read books by authors of different backgrounds.

”You look at this country and you look at this world and you need to understand it in complex ways,” Diaz said, citing diverse gender and race perspectives as critical to that understanding. “And part of that complexity is, of course, questions of gender: If you don’t want to deal and relate and think about what it means to be a woman in this planet — you’re going to have serious problems. The same with dealing with the question of ethnicity and race.”

Diaz went on to explain how simply reading classics, like “Dracula,” through the lens of the “racial other” can make a big difference in how students view race.

The author criticized the lack of diversity in creative writing MFA programs in a piece for The New Yorker last year, noting that students also lacked “awareness of the lens of race.”

Diaz discussed the topic again in a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, in which he also spoke about how the Black Lives Matter movement showed the country’s struggles dealing with “the legacy of white supremacy.”

“I think that we’re in another moment where historically, periodically issues of race and the kind of panorama in which we live becomes more clear and comes into focus,” Diaz told The Los Angeles Times. ”But we also historically have a great habit of allowing these moments to dissipate; for the landscape to become murky; for the conversation to slip away. Our amnesia around this and our ability to change the subject is really unmatched.”

Watch the award-winning author’s interview with Seth Meyers above, during which Diaz also explains why he asks his students to watch “Star Wars” and read The Lord of The Rings before the start of the semester.

What it’s Like to Be the “Ross” of the Family

As my parents’ 35th anniversary approaches, I’ve been thinking a little bit about what it means to be the only divorced person in my immediate family (and most of my circles of friends, too). See, I come from a very conservatively religious family, one that takes marriage very seriously (as they should. I mean “until death do us part” isn’t supposed to be a punch line, right?). So divorce is pretty uncommon. In addition to my parents, my grandparents have celebrated over 60 years together, and my sisters are both 5 years into their wedded bliss. Despite the longstanding family tradition, divorce came calling at my door, and I, unfortunately, had to answer.

Since then, my dad has lovingly referred to me as “Ross.” If you aren’t familiar with the show Friends (for starters, I don’t think we can be friends), Ross is the only member in a group of twenty-somethings who has been divorced and is a single parent. Although Ross is arguably the worst character on the show, I can empathize with him. It’s not easy being the only divorced member of a group, even if that group is your own family. Here are a few observations I’ve made as my time as “Ross”:

  • You can’t expect people who haven’t been through it to know how divorce feels. They can sympathize, but they won’t truly understand the grieving process that accompanies the death of a relationship.
  • You can be completely happy for the couples in your life and completely envious at the same time.
  • Sometimes you’ll have your kids at get-togethers; sometimes you won’t. When you don’t, you’ll have to explain why (even though it is seemingly obvious).
  • People will take a very vested interest in your love life (usually harmless, often annoying).
  • You will have to keep your mouth closed when you witness other couples argue over whose turn it is to take care of a child or complete a household chore.
  • Some will wonder why you would even want to date or marry again after everything you’ve been through.
  • Like Ross, you might have to struggle not to be defined by your divorce. I am more than a divorcee–I’m a mother, daughter, aunt, writer, professor, friend, avid Netflix watcher–and you are, too.
  • Life will go on. For your friends. For your family. And for you. The waves of loneliness may hit at different times for varying reasons, but things will gradually get better.

It can be lonely, irksome, and even downright frustrating to be the “Ross” of your circle. You may feel like no one will ever understand what you’re going through. And you’re right–unless they go through it, they won’t; they can’t. And that’s okay. Because we don’t love people because they share all of the same experiences as us. We love them because, at our lowest, they look at us and say, “I’ll be there for you.”

What It’s Like For One Dad Whose Son Says: ‘I Want To Become A Woman’

Recently, a 22-year-old named Zach made a confession to his father, Gary: “I want to become a woman.”

“I actually lost my mind,” says Gary about his reaction when he heard Zach’s news. “I was completely caught off guard … He’s supposed to be a man!”

Gary, who is biologically Zach’s uncle but has been raising Zach since he was two days old and considers him his son, says he’s been unable to sleep or eat, and even feels sick to his stomach envisioning Zach as a woman. “It makes me feel like I failed in raising a man,” he explains. “I love Zach no matter what, but I don’t know if I can take it. It’s very tough. I feel like Zach has left me.”

In the video above, Dr. Phil asks Gary, “What do you say to yourself about this?”

“I failed,” Gary responds. “I just feel like I lost him, like he’s gone.”

When Dr. Phil asks if Gary has made any effort to educate himself about what it means to be transgender, Gary admits, “I don’t know how to understand it … It’s not OK. I love Zach, I don’t know how to take him as a girl. It just seems like I failed.”

On Thursday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Gary meets Zach as Steph – watch more here.

It's a mad, mad, mad mad farcical return to the days of the Keystone Cop comedies, on an Ultra Panavision scale, in this star-studded extravaganza. A multitude of people have been given a clue by a dying man (Jimmy Durante) as to the location of $ 350,000 in stolen bank money that he has buried. They cannot come to an agreement to seek out the loot as a cooperative unit, so they set out separately in a mad race to get to it first. They do not know that the state police are on to them and are simply allowing the loot-seekers to lead them to the stolen bucks. Miss America Kira Kazantsev: ‘It’s Not As Glamorous As People Think’

A new Miss America will be crowned on Sunday, which means audiences can look forward to seeing some stunning ballgowns, fun celebrity judges and a whole host of various talents.

But before the 2016 winner takes her crown, The Huffington Post sat down with Kira Kazantsev, the current Miss America, to get a behind-the-scenes look at what life is really like as the country’s most beloved beauty queen.

Kazantsev dished on what it’s like to travel 20,000 miles every month for a year, and how she juggles so many appearances while keeping things real, fun and stylish. And yes, we did ask about a “Miss Congeniality” reference that Kazantsev totally confirmed. Scroll down to read excerpts from the conversation, which have been condensed and edited for clarity.

HuffPost: What is a typical day like for you:

Kira Kazantsev: I travel 20,000 miles a month and I’m in a different city every two days. Usually I wake up, depending on the call time, about two hours before. I do my own hair, I do my own makeup. You know, it could be event one of five that day and I have to maintain [my look]. It’s a lot — it’s not as glamorous as people think.

HP: Who provides your clothing?

KK: My clothes are provided to me by Joseph Ribkoff which is really nice. They travel very well. But other than that I’m on my own.

HP: For the Miss America pageant, do they give you a glam squad?

KK: Pretty much the girls do their own hair and makeup, but they do have people there to help you, touch you up, whatever it might be. They won’t leave you high and dry — there will be somebody to help you out!

HP: Do the girls help each other backstage at all?

KK: Yeah! Absolutely. There’s so much going on — it’s 52 people squeezed into a pretty tight space. So there’s constant [chatter, such as], “Is your curling iron on, can I use that for a second? I can’t find my hairspray, can I borrow yours?”

HP: Do you really use butt spray?

KK: We do use butt glue! It does help for piece of mind. Nobody wants to see that when you’re walking across the stage. Just cement that down and you’ll be good to go!

HP: Who makes your dresses for pageants?

KK: My mom and a seamstress made my competition wardrobe both years for Miss New York. We went to Mood, got fabric for like 40 bucks, got rhinestones on eBay, and they concocted this thing, this amazing dress that I ended up winning Miss New York in.

I’ve always prided myself on being very frugal about it and showing that you don’t have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars. I’ve never spent more than $ 500 on a dress.

HP: How do you travel with your crown?

KK: My carry-on always has my crown, because if the luggage gets lost than you’re kind of SOL.

I also always have my makeup and an outfit, so for whatever reason if I get stranded and my luggage doesn’t make it, I have the essentials — my “Miss America kit.”

HP: What’s the most surprising item people might find in your closet?

KK: I don’t have a closet! That’s the thing I’m looking forward to most [when the year is over]. Just having hangers!

You can catch Kazantsev handoff her crown at the 2016 Miss America competition on Sunday, September 13 at 9 pm on ABC.

And as a bonus, check out Kazantsev performing “Cups” at HuffPost’s office. Kazantsev performed a similar red cup routine for her talent last year, when she won her title.

Was Kanye West’s VMAs speech perfect? Yes. Can something perfect be made even better? We thought the answer was no. But, thanks to the below video, which adds the “Seinfeld” song to the background of West’s speech, we now know the answer is a resounding yes.

Rentboy: For What It’s Worth

This past Tuesday, federal officers, largely comprised of Department of Homeland Security personnel and with the help of the NYPD, raided the offices of Rentboy.com in Manhattan. The CEO as well as five current and one former employee were arrested, either at the office or at their home. As Melissa Gira Grant reports for Vice, they are charged with “conspiring to violate the Travel Act,” a law that ups lesser charges for the illegal act of prostitution (generally a matter for states and municipalities) to the federal level when those activities cross state lines.

This is not the first time the fed has taken down an escorting gateway: in June of last year, website myRedbook was taken down. More recently, Backpage has come under fire after allegations of sex trafficking from a sheriff’s department in Illinois. What is intriguing about the raid of Rentboy compared to those two examples is the excruciatingly gendered way that the complaint levied by law enforcement reads: thus far, the charges announced for Rentboy are illegal prostitution over state lines. In the case of Backpage, the charges for prostitution were levied along with sex trafficking, often in the same breath. Constantly, the two terms were paired together, as if to imply that the two distinct activities (both illegal, but the latter morally abhorrent) go hand in hand. This is not (at least, not yet) the case with the Rentboy complaint, a site primarily devoted to connecting male escorts with other men. It is likely that charges will change, though: money laundering was suggested by a few outlets, and there is the possibility of the feds finding advertisements posted by users under the age of majority in the servers now in their possession.

The government pointedly issued its lurid account of gay male sex for money in court the same day. For those who don’t pay for sex, it may seem like an outlandish practice, but if current events have any say in your sexual peccadillos, you’re running out of options besides the old religious standard of wedding and bedding one person for the rest of your life.

Perhaps you were one of the people who instead had an account on Ashley Madison, a website that advertises itself as a discreet tool for straight married men who want to hook up with people who are not their spouse; motto: “Life is Short, Have an Affair.” Ashley Madison was the victim of a hack and massive data dump of the information of 33 million users, and now media organizations are trolling through the information to try to find prominent individuals with accounts — some are obligingly offering up free services to allow people to find people they know (such as a spouse, potential employee, member of the legislature, etc.) who may have had an account on the website via an email or phone number search.

There’s no disputing that the raid on Rentboy and the hack are major clickbait. Putting aside the ad hoc puritanical moralism deployed in both cases (of which Glenn Greenwald of The Intercept opines in the Ashley Madison case that “busybodies sitting in judgment of and righteously condemning the private, sexual acts of other adults remains one of the most self-satisfying and entertaining — and thus most popular — public spectacles”), there is an overwhelming sense of one thing: there is a huge market for discreet sexual encounters, one that both sites once filled.

The growing government crackdown on an entire industry full of hard-working, whatever-happens-behind-closed-doors-is-our-business professionals comes on the heels of the Amnesty International board’s decision to make sex worker rights an issue of human rights, and part of their global advocacy efforts. The sentiment has been echoed, at the time of this writing, by several large LBGT rights organizations: the Transgender Law Center, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the National Center for Transgender Equality. Expecting discreet, professional and satisfactory sexual service from someone whose method of making ends meet is constantly under the jeopardy of being denied is a tall order. Despite moral opprobrium, subjection to second-class status, lack of affordable and accessible health care and housing, benefits of any kind and above being in legal jeopardy, many sex workers do a bang up job, and should be applauded and supported for it.

The message from the federal government has largely been a threat to the lives and livelihood of US citizens, who are, it must be said, under the law, criminals. More so, though, that the country is less invested in addressing larger, systemic issues of racial, economic and anti-LGBT injustice and more interested in criminalizing the individuals most marginalized by those systems. It should be clear that in the entirety of the complaint issued by the fed there is absolutely no pretense of victimhood on any particular person or entity’s part. Again, Rentboy is, at least not yet, charged with “trafficking.” As Scott Shackford put it in Reason, “there is absolutely nothing in the complaint that even hints at the idea that there is anything non-consensual happening, that so much as a single human being is harmed, even tangentially, by letting men pay for sex with other men.”

The potential for a money laundering charge in the Rentboy case is probably the most laughable — in the almost two decades that Rentboy has been operational, the total amount of money laundered in the United States by financial institutions is estimated at $ 5 – $ 10 trillion. This is a conservative estimate. The fed and NYPD seized $ 1.4 million from RentBoy, which, according to federal asset forfeiture rules, would likely be split among the agencies involved — not even a tiny fraction of a drop in the bucket for the US banking industry in a year, though perhaps a sizeable enough prize for the NYPD. Again, this was largely carried out by the Department of Homeland Security, whose “core missions,” according to their website, are to prevent terrorism and enhance security, secure and manage US borders, enforce and administer immigration law, safeguard and secure cyberspace and ensure resilience to disasters.

Now you might say: what about that Gawker piece, roundly and rightly criticized, on a sex worker who outed a wealthy but not prominent executive at a rival media corporation? An example of the type of person attracted to the sex industry, you might say. Fair point, perhaps, but I think it’s also safe to say that this particular sex worker’s well-documented history of conspiracy-theory hocking puts him safely in the “Florida Man” subset of humanity (that is, not representative of the whole but easy and fun for some to gawk at). Gawker’s approach to making things news is couched in the same type of moralistic paternalism that the Ashley Madison hackers used to justify their leak: “learn your lesson and make amends,” as the group put it. A family was ruined in the case of Gawker’s article, and, in the eye-for-an-eye mob justice approach commonly taken by the internet, the sex worker involved was quickly identified and had his personal information made public.

Perhaps you were part of the internet commentariat that joined in denouncing the Gawker article, but your outrage probably missed one thing: paying someone to have sex is illegal in this country (unless the sex worker is in a brothel in a very small number of rural counties in Nevada). To quote Charlotte Shane, “If you all want a world where men pay for sex without risking shame in the process, maybe don’t create one in which sex workers are reviled.” The vast majority of the time, when there are news stories involving the hiring of someone for sex, it is a part of your local police department’s news blotter, probably naming the individuals involved in the transaction (whom are both guilty of misdemeanors by state law). Occasionally yet far too often, it is because a sex worker was brutally attacked, raped or even murdered: the Sex Workers Outreach Project USA does the sad work of memorializing the dead. To be sure, stories involving sex workers are made far more public when there is some sort of social injury done to the john, as opposed to physical injury to the sex worker.

The same method of punishing the easiest to punish is sadly also being applied in the case of Rentboy. There can be no doubt that it is not just the defendants in the case levied by the federal government whose lives are turned upside down: the advertisers on the site are bereft of their method for making ends meet. I am colleagues with several of these people, and some are friends. They are scared. The government has access, in the seized servers, to all of their personal information, not to mention that of their clients. The number of lives wrecked by this move of the federal government is large, and now their work is pushed to the much more dangerous option of going back underground, or on to the streets, as was the case in the myRedbook and Backpage shutdowns. Many of these people lack the social and financial safety nets of criminals much further down the downright wicked spectrum in the United States, whose white collar crimes continue to go under-reported and under-punished.

As to why now, why this crackdown on internet-enabled sexual commerce is occurring so recently, that is an excellent question. Not being a journalist, I have the blessed privilege of being able to wildly speculate. Since this is the internet, let me do so now, in order of most likely to least likely:

1. Money: Rentboy, though a decidedly small fish when it comes to making money in the sex field, was perhaps a large enough fish to fry that it was a juicy target for the NYPD. It is highly likely, considering the efforts already involved in Operation Choke Point (which targeted industries where money laundering is most likely to happen and includes the adult entertainment industry), that operations like Rentboy were under increased government scrutiny with an eye towards their finances and the potential fallout or lack thereof that could result from seizing said finances.

2. Politics: It is election season, one in which gay marriage has been approved by the Supreme Court. In the face of homophobic voters likely to cast ballots for Republicans, this could be a show of force by the Obama administration on sexual deviancy. The idea that sex workers deserve the rights afforded to other workers has a home only on the extreme ends of the political spectrum (far left and libertarians), and would be unlikely to upset most Democratic voters while reassuring some Republicans. Add to that the fact that these sex workers were gay men, practicing all sorts of perversions, such as diaper play or BDSM (as outlined by Grant), selling their sex, and you’ve got the makings of an easy victory for the moral majority.

3. Vengeance: The previously mentioned Gawker article came out in mid-July. Considering that parts of the testimony by the federal government include contact with Rentboy at their Hookies award ceremony in December of 2014, it is impossible that this led to an investigation. It is not impossible, but maybe improbable, that a well-connected victim of this article’s outing was able to make a few phone calls, and for a federal agency to exact a type of retribution on intel already gleaned, per point 1 above. Not to mention that of all of the occupations most in the loop on the misdeeds of Very Important People, sex workers are by far the most vulnerable.

As a current sex worker and someone who advertised on Rentboy himself stated, “The people at Rentboy weren’t doing anything wrong — they were doing something illegal.” It is a law affecting a large segment of our economy that has always been there, and one that it is high time it changed. The most prudent path, the one that benefits the most people, would be to make laws against sex work a relic of the past, much like laws against gay marriage should be. This is more than the battle for current sex workers — this is a cause that anyone whose decisions regarding what they did with their body and their sex were circumscribed by the law should take up for the battle cry for. Whatever your opinion of sex work, though, we should at least be able to agree that our government has more important issues to tackle.

The Problem With Television Isn’t the LBT, It’s the G.

When Russell T. Davies’ Queer as Folk launched itself onto UK television screens, it inspired me to tell stories. Following the UK show, the stateside equivalent found its own voice, an audience and went on to explore and develop the gay community — working hard to tackle topical issues and push boundaries.

Then, there seemed to be nothing.

Two years ago, HBO commissioned Looking — billed as a “Gay Girls,” the short-lived drama dared to be different. Unfortunately, it was cancelled, but not before causing an extremely heated debate. I spent many hours reading all of the reasons why it fell short and ultimately was taken off the air. The only thing that keeps coming up (apart from ratings) is that it wasn’t supported by the gay community as much as it could have been.

Over the last couple of years we have seen a beautiful influx in LBT television and drama — something that makes me overjoyed. Now, Orange is the New Black, tackles lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes in abundance and the reaction couldn’t be any further from the opposite. Transparent has done the same — but this leads me to the question: Why? Do these shows not portray multitudes of diversity within their own niche community? Are these representations not always positive? Do they have a broader crossover potential into “straight culture?” Or is it simple: the lesbian, transgender and bisexual characters have the support of their target viewing audiences, but when the gay male community are given their own, they spend a lot of their time dragging their heels. So to speak.

I am not saying that LBT’s are all happy with the way they have been represented within television shows of late, merely that the support of these kinds of diversity has been overwhelming positively, and the gay male community should be doing the same.

Andrew Haigh, creator of Looking, said that one of the reasons he believed it wasn’t as successful as it could have been was down to the fact that gay men want to be represented — but only in a good light. But this leads me to another critical question: Why?

Queer as Folk didn’t shine a great light on our community at all times. Yes, it diversified in the way the stories were told — but didn’t Looking do the same? It seems more possible that as a gay male community we feel we have come a lot further than what Looking had to offer — but the reactions to the show lead me to believe that we really haven’t at all.

I watched both seasons of Looking and read many pieces on it during and after. I didn’t feel I was “one specific character,” but I was more of an amalgamation of multiples. I also see that it had flaws — like many other shows out there. But the flaws on those shows, which represent LBT culture, caused no size of uproar as much as Looking did.

I’m going to be bold and say that it wasn’t the Looking creators who went wrong, but the gay male viewing audience who tied it to a cross and let it burn. However, unbeknown to us at the time of burning, we actually created a bigger problem: Gaining further representation on television and in film.

Recently, I have been going through multiple creative processes and forms of storytelling around gay and straight characters. However, my concern is that in writing these stories and creating these gay men, I will eventually reach more impenetrable roadblocks like the ones I have already met. Could this be because of the unspoken “caution” on gay male characters that the community has essentially placed on itself?

Due to gay male character ensemble shows off-screen not gaining support, we are now in a position where it is difficult to gain it on screen. It wasn’t the creators of Looking who failed us — we failed them, and in turn we closed the door for widespread representation in our own faces. Now, we may have a long time to wait until one brave broadcaster is willing to open it again and take that “risk.”

We can’t cry out for representation and then spit on it when it arrives. We can’t lap up other shows dealing with our cohort’s problems and lives and stamp on our own because we feel like we’ve been given the short straw. We can’t decry characters that trade off sex for information, or hurt others, or don’t fully show who we as individuals are. That mentality in itself — from the gay male viewing audience — is not helping the fight for gay male rights.

My experience as a gay man is in no way the same as someone else’s. Sometimes, I am not a good person. But that’s not because I am gay. It’s because I am human and we all make mistakes no matter who we wake up next to in the morning. For me, any gay character on screen whether I relate directly or not is just as important as the last. Instead of rallying when it’s too late — we should be more active as a gay male community in the entertainment business, but also in support of other gay males who dare to be different and take a stand in showing off our wonderfully unique opinions, characters and world.

I don’t want myself or fellow writers to be limited in terms of who we choose to write. I have a voice, and like countless more I intend to use it. I will continue to write all forms of gay men — because I believe that’s how we should be seen. I will never make any apologies for doing so.

I’m a gay man and I want to see it. Any form of representation, beats absolutely none at all.

Taylor Swift Sings ‘Smelly Cat’ With Lisa Kudrow And It’s Glorious

Taylor Swift has brought some unexpected guests on stage during the course of her “1989” tour, but bringing former “Friends” star Lisa Kudrow up to sing “Smelly Cat,” well, that’s just genius.

For her fifth show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Swift and Kudrow sang a simple, but beloved song of a smelly cat, and it was glorious:

Here’s the original:

For her final LA show, Swift didn’t skimp on the special guests. In addition to Kudrow, the pop star also brought out her BFF Selena Gomez to sing “Good For You,” and Justin Timberlake to sing “Mirrors.”

A Simple Way To Know When It’s OK To Ask A Woman If She’s Pregnant

Mom Carrie Saum was fed up with people assuming her “squishy” belly was a “baby bump,” so she made a helpful video and flowchart to let people know when it’s OK to ask a woman if she’s pregnant.

According to Saum, there are only two scenarios when it’s appropriate: If she tells you she’s pregnant and you respond, “Really? What? You’re pregnant?” or if you’re in the room where she is giving birth and see the baby crowning or witness the C-section taking place.

“The bottom line here is that women’s bodies are not your business,” the mom explains, adding, “If a woman wants you to know, she’ll tell you.”

John Oliver Says It’s Time To End Discrimination Against Gays

John Oliver says it’s time for the federal government to finish the job when it comes to gay rights

Speaking on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday, Oliver pointed out that while gay couples now have the right to get married, they don’t have many other rights in much of the nation.

In some cases, they have no rights at all.

Now Oliver is calling on the feds to extend basic civil rights protections to the gay community.

“States have a checkered history when it comes to civil rights,” Oliver said. “Just look at Arkansas right now. Not only do they not have any anti-discrimination ordinances, earlier this year they actually passed an anti-anti-discrimination ordinance that prevents any city or county from extending civil rights protections to gay people.”

As Oliver pointed out, that’s the opposite of progress.

“It would be like if Apple suddenly introduced the iPhone 7 and it was a flip phone,” he said. “That’s still not as dumb as the Apple Watch… but it’s dumb.”

Check it out in the clip above.

The Saddlebag Makes a Comeback! Why It’s the Essential Late Summer Accessory

saddlebags

Leave it to the last weeks of summer to induce a carefree mood among us all. The best way to sartorially translate that breezy feeling of the dog days? Start with your bag—but sans the baggage. Leave the tote at home (too heavy), toss the clutches (let yourself be hands-free!), and forget the top handle (too stuffy). Instead, opt for the laid-back symbol of the hot weather season: the saddlebag. Its charming shape is compact enough to not get in the way—but large enough to hold the essentials—and comes complete with a long strap to leave your palms burdenless.

And it’s no surprise that the conveniently cool carryall has made a comeback. The piece dotted the retro-redux runways of spring 2015, with Chloé reintroducing the piece in miniature size, while Michael Kors kept his classic in a sheeny leather. Throw further back to the chicest seventies heroines of sprawled summers past, like a devil-may-care Jane Birkin and a polished Jane Fonda who slung on fringed and embellished versions.

As for now? Our favorite brand-new choices range from tawny and engraved with a colorful Western motif, to pale blue with hints of a messenger satchel, or rendered out of slick crocodile. But whatever you choose in this era—don’t hold your horses—snag one to wear now and beyond.

The San Francisco Giants Made Their Own ‘Full House’ Intro And It’s Perfect

San Francisco and “Full House” go together like peanut butter and jelly.

But while the Tanner family may have reigned supreme during the 1990s, the Giants have laid claim to the city’s hearts more recently, with World Series titles in 2014, 2012 and 2010.

And now the team is paying tribute to the Golden Gate city’s finest, creating their own version of “Full House” and totally nailing it.

Behold, “Full Clubhouse.”

The mastermind behind this video is not only a genius, but clearly a “Full House” super fan, because each scene is on point. If you need a refresher (What?) you can watch a version of the show’s intro to prepare, because …

THIS

IS

ABSOLUTE

PERFECTION.

The “Full House” reboot hitting Netflix in 2016  will feature most of the original cast, but can we PLEASE petition for the Giants to appear on a regular basis? So good.

Hey, Nightlife. It’s Not You. It’s Me.

Dear long nights and irrationally expensive tabs,

“If you love somebody, let them go.”

It’s not you, it’s me. I love my couch too much. I love the way my Blu-ray sparkles in the living room light. I love how I have my very own food court just feet away. Is it heaven? No, it’s my house. So, I guess yes. Yes it is.

I apologize if this has caught you off guard, if this appears to be a shock, I know we have had a solid relationship over the years – that one time after prom, those moments in college, the times when I’ve attempted to be social as an adult. Really, you’ve been great. More than great, in fact. You’ve taught me how to stay calm in tense situations. You’ve taught me how to conquer uncomfortable situations. You’ve taught me how to deal with inconsiderate houseguests. You’ve taught me that it is possible to spend that much money on Taco Bell. But I feel as if we’re growing apart, I feel as if you’re not invested in our relationship – that you’re not meeting me half way.

I don’t want to make this a big deal…On a scale of sleeping through an alarm to the possibility of Donald Trump being president, it’s probably a ‘the waiter got my order wrong at a restaurant’ type of thing. I just feel like honesty is the best way to go. So, here it is.

My issue starts even before “going out.” Pregaming is stressful (but necessary). I have to make a playlist? Then get judged on every song? No thanks. Oh, you’re bringing a +1? This isn’t an effing wedding. I don’t want to meet any new people.

Fast forward…looks like the pregame is over, please leave everything for me to clean up in the morning, I love that and it gives my life meaning! Now go have fun while I stay and lock up. And there’s more. Then the night actually begins. OK not so fast – one of your friends has to stay back with your other friend who is crying for some stupid reason.

Continuing on.

I’m sick of the long lines. I mean, what the f*ck? I don’t want to feel like I’m at Disney World every time I want to buy a drink. Also, what’s up with making me run into people from my past who I clearly don’t want to see? It’s like A Christmas Carol but with my exes. I HATE that. I mean, I reallllyy hate that.

And the small talk? God-awful. How can I concentrate on singing along to Ed Sheeran when I have to pretend like I care about what others are saying?

What twisted soul came up with the idea of a bar anyways? “Do you like strangers? Do you like standing awkwardly close to those strangers? And also paying money for things? And spending half the night deciding how to split the cab fare? Great! You’re going to love it here.”

That’s why I found a new, cool, progressive bar. It’s called my house. Everything is free, you are encouraged to wear sweatpants, only people I like are allowed in, there are unlimited movies, there’s a dog somewhere, you won’t lose your wallet every. frickin. night, and there are (literally) tubs of ice cream. Did I mention there is a cute dog that runs around? Oh, and beds are within walking distance, so you can get your steps in. Did I just change the party scene forever? You’re welcome.

What I’m trying to say is that there’s still hope for us, but if you want to make this work I’m going to need to see some effort. The least you could do is play some good music, not that top 40 B.S. Regardless of what happens we should totally stay friends, though. Ya know?

With sincerity (and in sweatpants),
Someone who is over “it”

Amy Schumer Rewrote Her ‘Star Wars’-Themed GQ Cover And Now It’s Perfect

GQ declared Amy Schumer the ”the funniest woman in the galaxy” when they released their cover and accompanying photo shoot for their August Comedy issue on Wednesday.

We have to admit, we were surprised the magazine chose to promote Schumer’s sexy “Star Wars”-themed photo shoot without a single quote from the forthcoming interview. But on Thursday, that all changed when GQ released Schumer’s take on the cover, which the magazine offered up as a fun assignment.

Per GQ:We also asked Amy if she wanted to take a shot at writing her own cover lines for an alternate version. She maybe got a little carried away …

The cover lines are hilarious (how does one get abs like Pax Jolie-Pitt? Does Pax Jolie-Pitt have abs?) and we have to say the photo seems like a better fit than the real cover that has the comedian sucking on C-3PO’s finger.

The mock cover is an interesting task for Schumer, who hasn’t been shy about her experiences with the magazine industry. She’s taken aim at women’s magazines repeatedly in her standup routines, sketches on “Inside Amy Schumer,” and in June she spoke of how refreshing it was to work with Glamour compared to her previous experiences.

“Any comic in the room knows that when a female comic does a photoshoot, they’re like ‘Oh, cool, can you hold this plastic dick over your head? We’re going to shoot actual cum out of it,” she said, explaining that Glamour was the first magazine that just asked her to smile.

She hasn’t let men’s magazines off the hook, either. Schumer plays a writer at fictional men’s magazine S’Nuff in “Trainwreck,” and when she spoke to GQ last year, she explained the magazine setting in the film was born out of personal experiences.

”I’ve been doing a lot of press in the last couple of years, and I knew it would be a fun place to satirize a little.” Like how? “Well, there’s a little bit about how, when they profile a girl, it’s always right on the precipice of, like, ‘We almost fucked.’ Like, ‘She walked in, and her nipples were just a little hard, and she ordered a whiskey because her throat hurt.'”

So while there’s nothing wrong with Schumer’s sexy “Star Wars” photo shoot — the comedian even thanked GQ for putting her on the cover — her version just seems to actually live up to the title of “funniest woman in the galaxy.”

It’s Official: A Selena Quintanilla MAC Cosmetic Line Is Coming In 2016

Thousands of Selena Quintanilla fans’ hearts exploded as news of a MAC cosmetic line inspired by the slain Tejano singer broke on Thursday morning.

The cosmetic’s company delivered the news to fans via their social media accounts, including Twitter and Instagram.

The company’s decision comes nearly six months after fans first began to rally online for a MAC collection inspired by the late singer. Las Vegas-based make-up artist and Selena fan José Antonio Figueroa was the catalyst to the movement after he photoshopped an image of Selena on a MAC liptick and posted the photo on Instagram in January.

The image included the hashtag  #SelenaQuintanillaForMAC and quickly went viral.

Patty Rodriguez, a producer for “On Air With Ryan Seacrest,” then started a formal petition on Change.org to make a full collection a reality. Rodriguez initially hoped to recieve 5,000 signatures in support of a limited-edition collection in the singer’s name. By the time MAC announced the line on Thursday morning, the petition had accrued nearly 38,000 signatures.

MAC originally responded to the petition in April, bringing hope to many with a statement acknowledging the “enthusiasm” of Selena fans and assuring them that all their feedback would be taken into consideration as new collaborations are planned.

The company came through Thursday morning.

“The talent and beauty, both physical and internal, of Selena has caused a significant and colorful impact on the world that has continued to grow during the last two decades,” James Gager, Creative Director for MAC James Gager, told People en Español. “We have paid attention to the passion and enthusiasm of her fans and whole heartedly recognize that her legacy personifies MAC’s philosophy.”

Gager also told People that the collection will debut in the second half of 2016.

Rumors that the company had reached out the Quintanilla’s sister, Suzette, to collaborate on the collection were also confirmed on Thursday. The singer’s sibling and bandmate spoke to People en Español exclusively on the collection.

“Helping create this collection takes me back to those late night chats on our tour bus, when [Selena] use to talk about some day having her own make up line,” Suzette said as part of her statement to the website.

Take a look at some of the ecstatic reactions from fans online:
