This $31.1 Million Patek Philippe Is Now the Most Expensive Watch Ever Auctioned

How’s this for exclusive: On Saturday, Christie’s auctioned off a one-of-a-kind, never worn Patek Philippe watch, and the luxury timepiece sold for a record-breaking 31 million Swiss francs, or $ 31.1 million. That’s the highest price ever paid for an auctioned timepiece, and it beats the previous record by roughly $ 7.8 million, according to CNN.

Breitling and Crown & Caliber Just Made It Easier for You to Get a New Luxury Watch

The watch, a Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300A-010, was specially made for this auction. According to a statement from Christie’s, it’s the only version of the timepiece ever produced in stainless steel, and it’s reversible, featuring two dial plates made from 18-carat gold with gold applied Breguet numerals on the time side. There are 20 complications in total, including five chiming modes, a day/night indicator, and day/date on both dials. The case measures 47.7mm in diameter, and it’s held in place with a sleek black hand-stitched alligator leather band. And just in case you forget how rare this ticker is, it’s marked with the inscription “the only one.”

Here's the Versatile, Rugged Watch John Krasinski's Wearing in 'Jack Ryan' Season 2

An anonymous buyer purchased the watch on Saturday, and the final sale blew past the watch’s estimated price of $ 2.5 to $ 3 million, according to data from Christie’s. Interestingly, the previous record was also held by a Patek Philippe watch: That went to a vintage model made in 1932 that sold for 23.2 million Swiss francs in a 2014 Sotheby’s auction, CNN reports.

The Grandmaster was one of 50 timepieces auctioned during Only Watch, a biannual event to raise money for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease that causes muscle deterioration. Overall, the event raised over $ 38 million for the cause—the bulk of it coming from just one ultra rare, incredibly expensive watch.

The Most Stylish Vegan and Genuine Leather Jackets for Men

Leather jackets complete the holy trinity of men’s fall fashion (don’t miss our boots and denim guides). In the spirit of the season, we’re channeling Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph’s giddiness for “sweata weatha”—if you haven’t seen it, stop what you’re doing and watch their stupidly funny Bronx Beat SNL sketch—and leaning in to “leatha weatha.”

Of all the cold-weather essentials, you’ll definitely drop the most coin on this one—that’s just the nature of purchasing something that could very well last a lifetime.

The Best-Smelling Fall Colognes for Men

“Investing in the perfect jacket is right up there with the perfect boots—or even your next car,” jokes New York fashion stylist Seppe Tirabassi. “There’s a whole library of styles and fits out there when it comes to leather outerwear.”

The Fall Fashion Essentials Every Outdoorsman Needs for a Weekend Getaway

The iconic biker aesthetic (à la Old Hollywood bad boys Brando and Dean) might come to mind, but that’s just the first chapter. From a modern suede blouson that’s impossibly smooth to a vegan-friendly faux-leather puffer, Tirabassi’s curated 10 leather jackets that will last you many seasons to come.

Our 2019 Fall Fashion Preview, Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

1. Nate Clean Black Leather Jacket from Acne Studios

“With ultra-soft nappa leather, Acne’s biker jacket boasts classic design cues like a belted waist and cut along the collar, but the Swedish brand makes it feel contemporary with a slightly oversized fit,” Tirabassi explains.

2. Vegan Leather Hooded Puffer from Nanushka

“Nanushka wins with their all-vegan leather offerings, like this trendy puffer hybrid. With the quality and texture of the material, you’d never know it was made of faux-leather,” Tirabassi says. The puffer hood, deep pockets, and high collar will help you conquer frigid temperatures in style.

3. RRL Slim Fit Leather Jacket from Ralph Lauren

“Ralph Lauren’s RRL brand will give you the best well-worn finish, and this one gives you a head start with some of the black finishing already faded,” says Tirabassi. “It’s also lightweight enough to carry you through three seasons.”

[$ 1,900; ralphlauren.com]

4. Sidney Leather Jacket in Merino Shearling from Belstaff

The Sidney jacket is a statement piece with a soft wax coating and asymmetric fastening in the front. “You don’t need a motorbike to look badass in this Belstaff piece,” says Tirabassi, “I love the quilted shoulders and high snap collar, plus the shearling lining is key for winter warmth.”

5. Suede Western Jacket from Frame

“A suede jacket like this one from Frame is a must-have in any guy’s fall closet,” according to Tirabassi. “Western details like flap patch front pockets, polished hardware, and khaki tone will stand out from the pack.”

[$ 950; frame-store.com]

6. Bonded Suede Jacket from Club Monaco

“Club Monaco’s bonded suede jacket features a second layer of warmth thanks to a scuba interior. Yes, it’s the same material used in a wetsuit for insulation. The color is technically grey, but has a reddish undertone that’s pretty unique,” he explains.

7. Northwick Leather Biker Jacket from Allsaints

Tirabassi is a big fan of Allsaints’ leather goods. “Their jackets are affordable and made of quality leather—a good way to go if you’re on a budget. This biker fit has blacked out hardware to give a muted, youthful look that’s super stylish.” says Tirabassi.

8. Miles Tobacco Suede Trucker Jacket with Shearling Collar from Reiss

“The trucker silhouette and shearling collar on the Miles jacket are details that skew more casual, but are tastefully executed,” Tirabassi says. “The tobacco color is the perfect shade of brown to pair with other fall classics, like your favorite pair of jeans or boots.”

[$ 795; reiss.com]

9. Liam Faux Leather Bomber Jacket from Stella McCartney

Designer Stella McCartney (yes, that McCartney) is vocal about not utilizing animal products in her widely acclaimed collections, instead investing in extensive research to produce the highest-quality vegan materials. “Her men’s line is still pretty new, and she’s bringing in ethical vegan components to some stellar pieces. Even the shearling collar on this bomber is faux, but feels like the real thing.”

10. Leather Biker Jacket from Dunhill

If you’ve got the funds, tap this luxury British heritage brand for your leather needs. “Dunhill’s calfskin leather is incredibly supple, and they excel at incorporating refined finishes like the subtle stitch detailing on the arms, chest, and back,” says Tirabassi. “This is not your dad’s jacket.”

Fall Fashion Edit: The Most Stylish Eyeglasses You Can Buy Online

We’re a culture that thrives on instant gratification. Shopping is evidence of that. Why make a trip to a brick-and-mortar store when you can browse for everyday essentials from your couch, then have them delivered to your door in a matter of days? For some time there were exceptions to this convenience. For instance, buying prescription eyeglasses required multiple visits to get an eye exam, work with an optician to find a flattering pair of frames, then wait for them to be made before you could get prescription eyeglasses. But now, you can bypass the middleman. So long as you have a current prescription (yes, you still need a yearly eye exam), you can upload your script and get a pair of eyeglasses shipped right to you.

We spoke with Kim Nemser, vice president of product strategy at Warby Parker, the brand that started the craze, for some must-know tips and tricks. Once you’re armed with the necessary knowledge, check out our favorite new frames of fall 2019. They’ll give you the fresh start you need.

The Best Styles for Each Face Shape

Geometry plays a considerable role, but you ultimately want to pick frames that look and feel good. “Beyond considering your face shape, it’s important to consider the width of your face, especially with optical frames,” says Nemser. “Wide frames can overwhelm narrow features, and frames that are too narrow can result in an incorrect fit.” Here’s the quick and dirty on the most flattering frames for your face shape:

Round: “Try a graphic frame,” Nemser says. “Think: a rectangular pair with more pronounced angles and edges.”
Diamond/Square: “Juxtaposition is key,” Nemser explains. “With an angular shape, go with a style that has softer edges. Round-lensed frames balance out strong jawlines or cheekbones.”
Heart: “Heart-shaped faces can pull off the aviator style—a tried-and-true shape with smooth lines that complements a wider forehead,” Nemser says.
Oval: “An oval-shaped face is great for most frames, since the ratio of your facial features is balanced,” Nemser says.

Choosing Colors to Match Your Skin Tone and Hair

You’ve probably heard that cooler skin tones look best in blues and greens, while reds and oranges flatter warmer skin tones, but there’s no hard and fast rule with eyeglasses. “Frame color is usually a personal preference, based off what people are most drawn to,” Nemser says. “Green has been trending in the market, and we introduced a ‘rosemary crystal’ this August. We’ve also seen bold tortoises, matte colorways, and graphic two-toned acetates continuing to do well.”

Embrace Your Quirks, Know Your Fit

It’s easy to assume you just need to tighten the arms of your glasses in order to ensure a proper fit, but there’s actually more at play here. Here’s how to tell if you’ve found a pair of well-fitting frames, according to Nemser:

Pupils are near the center of each lens
Lenses don’t extend past the sides of your face
Eyebrows are above the glasses
Temples sit comfortably on your ears (and aren’t too tight or too loose)
When you smile, your cheeks don’t push the frames up

“We know how important it is to find the right fit, so we offer a few no-risk ways to try on frames before purchasing,” Nemser adds. “Through our Home Try-On program, we’ll send you five frames for free to try on for size. If instant gratification is your thing, you can try on frames virtually through our app on an iPhone X. Alternatively, pop into any one of of our retail locations, and our advisors are happy to help—plus we offer a 30-day, no-hassle return policy for any frame purchase.”

Note that brands have sizing options—like wide and narrow fits—depending on the frame. For instance, Warby Parker has “low-bridge” fit for people with low nose bridges (if the bridge of your nose sits level with or below the pupils), wide faces, and/or high cheekbones. “They help keep frames from sliding down your face, resting on your cheeks, or pinching,” she explains. All of those factors indicate an improper fit.

“We also offer variations in nose pads (for less tension and to reduce slipping), lens tilt (to provide space between the cheekbones and the frames), and curved temples (creating a roomy fit, reducing pinching and any pain).” That said, if you’ve struggled to find comfortable frames in the past, it’s worth going to a brick-and-mortar store rather than shopping online so a professional can help you optimize your frames.

Consider a Specialty Lens

For the most part, it’s always best to consult an optometrist if you’re unsure whether you want a specific lens. “We offer blue-light-filtering lenses for everyday wear, for those who want to protect their eyes from UVA rays, UVB rays, and blue light,” Nemser says. “They filter more blue light from the sun and other sources than standard polycarbonate lenses and can be added to any frames with or without a prescription. For those who wear glasses every day, our standard lens options are treated with anti-reflective, scratch-resistant coatings, and come standard with impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.”

Tips for the At-home, Try-on Process

“At Warby Parker, we usually recommend starting with the quiz to get a sense of what frame shape, fit, and colors work best for you,” Nemser says. “Once you receive the glasses, you have five days to try them on for size. We recommend wearing each pair for an hour or so to get a feel for the fit. Sharing photos or consulting a friend (or even our Customer Experience team) is encouraged when making a style decision.”

What to Do if Your Eyeglasses Need an Adjustment

“All Warby Parker stores offer free adjustments by trained opticians onsite to ensure your glasses or sunglasses are the perfect fit,” Nemser says. “If there’s not a retail location nearby, we’ll reimburse you the cost of one adjustment (up to $ 50) within 30 days of purchase.”

Oslo by ROKA

ROKA is ideal for guys who want a pair of specs that can keep up with active pursuits—be it boxing, cycling, or CrossFit. The brand uses a patented elastomer along the temple and nose pads that mimics the stickiness of a gecko’s feet, providing a no-slip grip no matter how sweaty you get. This round silhouette will flatter most, but it’s especially great for people with angular features—i.e. a diamond or square face shape.

Felix by Warby Parker

Warby Parker is your best bet for a variety of styles, colors, and materials. And as we highlighted above, pretty much guarantees you’ll love your frames what with their online quiz, at-home try-on process, and 30-day return policy. The Felix frame falls between a round and square style, so it’s a stellar match for most face shapes. The acetate comes in classic and trending colors—like Pacific Crystal shown here—and is brand new for fall 2019.

Zenni Optical is a one-stop shop for the guy who wants it all. Need a frame with lenses that block UV and blue light, or a clip-on pair that has a detachable sunshade? You’ll find it all here. You can also shop for kids’ frames, and the site has an exhaustive amount of information on everything from ordering glasses online to workspace progressives. Heart-shaped faces do well with aviator styles; the shape balances out a wider forehead.

Zenith by Ambr Eyewear

If you’re in the market for blue-light blocking glasses, select a style from Ambr Eyewear. Most brands’ options have orange-tinted lenses that can alter your color perception, but these look like typical eyeglasses (whether you’re wearing them or someone’s admiring from afar). The rounded shape of these Zenith frames will soften the angular features of a square face.

This magazine was created as an effort to highlight the activities of a select few African American creatives all across the country, and hopefully the globe. In an industry where our literacy of African American culture has surpassed outdated elementary school textbooks, we now have the chance to change the discourse of African American art not only for education purposes but entertainment as well. For years the the idea of African African creativity has been absorbed and consumed to the point of pure mass production, that some of the most talented, unheard of African American artists are overlooked due to a constant demand for a specific genre of "Black Entertainment." With this digital magazine, my ultimate goal is to change that perspective on black culture in the media. Not only do I want to showcase black creativity, but I also want to highlight the experience that comes with that creative intelligence; the conversations to be had about that intelligence. I want this to be a space for some of the most wanted entertainment in the world… so without further delay, enjoy.

The Most Delicious Meals You Can Make With Grapes

By Vanessa Pisk
Recipes by Luigi F. di Biagio

BAKED GRAPES WITH A SPICED CRUMBLE

(Serves six)

300 g (10.5 oz) large purple and green grapes, 2 tbsp agave syrup (or acacia honey), juice of 1 lime, 120 g (1 cup) flour 50 g (1/2 cup) oat flour, 80 g (2.8 oz) lightly salted butter cut into cubes, 40 g (1/5 cup) granulated sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon, pinch ground ginger, vanilla ice cream

Put the two flours, sugar, spices and butter in a bowl, and work with your fingers until chunky. Rub the chunks between your fingers until crumbly. Line a baking pan with parchment paper, add the crumble and bake at 350 °F for about 25 minutes, stirring when halfway done. The crumble should be golden and crunchy. Lightly butter a baking pan. Cut the grapes in half and arrange in the pan. Sprinkle with the lime juice, drizzle with the agave syrup or honey, and cook under the grill for 10 minutes; the grapes should turn golden and be rather soft. Transfer the grapes to a serving dish or individual plates, sprinkle with the spiced crumble, and serve with ice cream.

BAKED CHICKEN WITH GRAPES, TARRAGON AND FENNEL LEAVES
(Serves four to six)

1 kg (2.2 lb) chicken parts 200 g (7 oz) pearl onions 200 g (7 oz) green grapes
30 g (1 oz) fresh tarragon and fennel leaves
1 clove garlic
1/2 cup white wine extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper

Rinse the chicken, pat dry, and season with salt and pepper. Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in an ovenproof pan with the crushed garlic. Add the chicken and brown on all sides. Add the wine and cook down. Add the onions and some of the minced herbs. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake at 350 °F for 20 minutes. Remove the foil, add the grapes, season with salt and pepper to taste, and continue cooking uncovered for 35 minutes; the chicken should be golden, and the grapes and onions soft. Sprinkle the remaining minced herbs over the chicken and serve.

LENTIL AND RAISIN SALAD WITH BEAN SAUCE

(Serves four)

200 g (7 oz) dried lentils, 2 cloves garlic, 1 bay leaf, parsley, 40 g (1.4 oz) raisins, 1 carrot, 1/4 red onion ,1 chunk celeriac, juice of a half a lemon, juice and half an orange, 1 tbsp white wine vinegar, 250 g (8.8 oz) boiled or canned beans, 2 tbsp plain yogurt, pinch of ground cumin, extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper

Rinse the lentils and put in a pot with a crushed clove of garlic, the bay leaf and the parsley. Cover with less than 1/2” of water, bring to a boil and cook on low for 30 minutes; the lentils should be soft but not fall apart. Drain the lentils and place in a bowl. Remove the garlic, bay leaf and parsley. Toss with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and set aside to cool.Rub the inside of another bowl with the remaining clove of garlic. Add the drained beans, yogurt, cumin, a little salt and pepper, 2 tablespoons of olive oil and the lemon juice. Blend until creamy using a stick blender, adding a little water if the mixture is too thick. Soak the raisins in the lukewarm orange juice for 10 minutes. Drain and set the juice aside. Mince the carrot, onion and celeriac, and add to the lentils. Stir in the raisins. Prepare an emulsion with the orange juice, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, the vinegar, salt and pepper. Pour over the lentils and toss. Set aside for 15 minutes and then serve with the bean sauce.

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE WITH CONCORD GRAPE COMPOTE
(Serves four)

130 g (4.5 oz) bittersweet chocolate (70%)
3 eggs
20 g (2.5 tbsp) powdered sugar about 1 tbsp butter
300 g (10.5 oz) Concord grapes
30 g (1/8 cup) granulated sugar juice and part of the zest of 1 lemon
1 vanilla bean
1 piece whole cinnamon

Scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean. Melt the chocolate with the butter and vanilla seeds bain-marie. Set aside to cool. Separate the eggs. Add the yolks to the chocolate mixture one at a time, beating well. Set aside. Beat the whites to soft peaks, adding the powdered sugar when the whites are foamy: you should have a soft meringue. Using a spatula, fold the beaten egg whites into
the chocolate mixture. Spoon the mousse into glasses and refrigerate for 2 hours. Cut some of the grapes in half and leave the rest whole. Simmer all the grapes for 15 minutes with the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice and zest, swirling the pan. Cool. Serve the mousse with the grape compote.

News in Brief: New Study Finds Box Still World’s Most Popular Container

PHILADELPHIA—Noting its ability to enclose, protect, and transport a wide variety of objects, a University of Pennsylvania study published Monday confirmed that the box remains the world’s most popular container. “We found that when something needs to be stored or moved—be it tools, jewelry, pizza, even ballots—people tend to put their trust in a box more often than, say, a bucket or satchel,” said the study’s lead author, Susan Kemmis, who highlighted the rectangular containers’ stackability and closable top as the key assets that set them apart from bags. “Whether the item or items to be stowed away are large, small, heavy, or light, there tends to be a box of appropriate dimensions and rigidity to adequately contain them. The same can’t be said of baskets, jugs, or barrels.” While later admitting that crates are the go-to container for shipping purposes, Kemmis emphasized that …

What the Most Stylish Women Wear to Work: Jewelry Designer Jennifer Fisher

jennifer fisher 9 to 5

While plenty of celebrities (Rihanna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Kim Kardashian West, to name a few) and other women in the know have clamored to dot their lobes, wrap their wrists, and clasp their necks with the covetable and edgy jewelry of Jennifer Fisher since the line’s inception in 2005, it’s also the designer’s enviable personal style that has piqued plenty of attention. As sculptural and experimental as her own statement-piece jewelry, the 2012 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist and working mom documents all on her lively Instagram feed, including her rotating inventory of outfits as she navigates the whirlwind schedule of manning her New York City–based showroom and stores. With a shock of color, a play on proportion and pattern, plenty of wit, and a stack of her own rings, Fisher shows her slew of followers that, just as with her own accessories, she’s all about the details.

But as the stylist turned jewelry designer recently explained, it’s all about a great base of denim and heels that gets her through a hard day of work and to any of the events she attends afterward. Here, Fisher reveals her favorite blues, why Fashion Week allows her to really experiment with her style, and how her jewelry dictates her workday ensembles.

The Charm of the Jewelry Business
Becoming a jewelry designer was not planned. After being a stylist for more than 10 years I was used to making custom pieces for clients when I could not find what they wanted, or I wanted, in the market. After the birth of my son Shane I scoured every high-end designer store to find the perfect piece of jewelry to wear to represent my son, and when I couldn’t find what I was looking for I went out and made my own. At the time, I was working on set and the response was so incredible that I started making similar pieces for friends and family. There was so much demand for my charm necklace that I started my own website selling the charms, necklaces, and bracelets directly from my bedroom, filling orders whenever I was not on set. It turned out there were thousands of women and men looking for the same bespoke pieces of fine jewelry and my business was born.

Daily Routine
My typical workday begins after I drop my children off at school and I’m usually in the office by 9:00 a.m., unless there is an out-of-office meeting. My day is a mix of different responsibilities. I am always working with my in-house PR team on what items are being pulled for certain celebrities and magazines. I always weigh in on the pulls. Because of my earlier career, I am familiar with what stylists need on set, so I like to always add a few extra pieces in the mix. Then there is a production meeting so I can be updated on the status of my designs for outside projects, collaborations, and, of course, planning for the next season.

I always like to pop into the store space during client appointments to see what people are buying and what they would like to see added to the line—it’s the best way to gauge the marketplace and what direction we should be leaning in for the next season. I always try to design for at least two hours a day. We have many more pieces per season because of the brass and the fine line, so it’s necessary to keep up on both collections. These days I am attending dinners or events most nights, but I always run home after work to see my kids before I go out. I’m an avid cook, so I make most dinners for them and it gives us some time to spend together before I have to dash.

It’s All About That Bling-Bling
My workwear definitely changed with careers, but the shift was seamless. I have always been informal in dressing down designer pieces for day to night, so my wardrobe hasn’t changed much except I was a bit more L.A. when I started—now it’s moved into a more minimal New York feel. I always base my look off of the jewelry I want to wear for the day or night and go from there. I have noticed that over the last few seasons I have started to pull away from piling on so much jewelry, though. Lately I’m favoring one statement cuff and one finger stacked with multiple rings over a ton of jewelry everywhere.

I always rotate the fine jewelry I wear on a daily basis; for instance, I am constantly readjusting my signature charms onto different length chains. However, my go-to earrings are our diamond pin front and back earrings; they’re my favorite update to the daily diamond stud. I am also never without a stack of my customized burnished cuffs. I love to mix the fine jewelry with the brass jewelry. I’m loving the idea of the single statement earring right now, specifically my silver-plated brass version, as well as my Chaos collection from Spring 2016. One earring worn with an earcuff on the opposite ear and one finger with multiple stacked rings stacked is my favorite evening look right now.

A Denim Girl at Heart (and Work)
I love denim, so most days it’s denim for me, which ranges from either my favorite hand-painted pair from Trico Field to my long-cuffed wide-leg Chloé jeans to my high-waisted Gucci with gold military buttons, or my favorite Frame Denim Le Garcon high-waisted flares. I elevate them by wearing a Gucci or Chloé silk blouse. Adding one of those and a heel instantly changes the look and lets me go from day to night. I bought an amazing J.W.Anderson black-and-white velvet top, as well as a silver metallic top—these are my current two favorites for going out. With a pop of color from my new Loewe orange red wristlet, I’m good to go!

I’ve been adding knits from Tome and a red marketed knit from Balenciaga, which is my current fall favorite. I like knits that are chunky yet structured, which can sometimes be hard to find. I love this new Mira Mikati coat that the designer gifted me in Paris—it’s the perfect gray-green coat that has Hello and OMG in felt in multiple colors; it matches everything. I also purchased a few new Sacai jackets. I am a collector of Sacai—basically, anything Sacai goes in my closet. My jackets range from puffy bombers to leather and cotton army green swing coats. Also, The Row for simple black dresses, and Dries Van Noten and Marni for prints.

The Shoes, the Bags
I am never a flats girl—it’s just not my thing. If I have early meetings I will leave my house in heels and throw a pair of sneakers in my bag. For heels it’s all about Loewe, Céline, Chloé, and Vetements for fall. I just got the Loewe Column Ring ankle boots with the gray, white, and blue–striped toe and they are so comfortable and work day to night. I also keep a pair of Céline slides under my desk that are my work “slippers.” No matter what I’m wearing I always throw those on and off during the workday. I hate being formal at my desk, so changing is always a must. Sometimes I change in and out of an outfit a couple of times a day so I don’t have to sit in it! I have my own closet in the office that I hang everything in.

I always have a cross-body bag on me: It makes everything easier for days when I am on the move from morning until night. I have multiple colors of the Céline Cabas tote that I throw my laptop in, along with anything I need for the day. Right now, I’m loving the bright blue version. My new favorite is a Louis Vuitton that I picked up during Paris Fashion Week with silver hardware. I also keep multiple Edie Parker clutches at work—they double as bookshelf art for my office.

Beauty Lewks
In case I need to go to an impromptu dinner or event, I keep an extra cocktail dress and multiple pairs of shoes at the office! I also keep an extra set of all my makeup, plus a few good red lip options and beauty cleansing products at my office. Otherwise, my work beauty look is always clean and minimal. I use Chantecaille tinted moisturizer daily and Tatcha eye gel masks, regardless if I’ve been out the previous night. I hate the feeling of foundation or makeup on my skin while working, so my morning routine is very basic. Moisturizer, brows, done! I have eyelash extensions, which make you look more bright and awake instantly.

The Weekend Chill
I’m with my children all weekend shuffling them to their soccer and basketball games, so I need to be mobile. I tend to stick to sneakers during the day, wearing my Alexander McQueen version of the Stan Smiths, or the Adidas Originals I customized with gold backs. I love to use the weekends to experiment with fun sunglasses as they are one of my favorite accessories. Currently I have three pairs in rotation: my Illesteva collaboration Holly frames, Loewe, or the Céline bright orange red frames. Of course.

Fashion Week Is Another Story Altogether
Fashion Week is a time to play with clothing that I might not normally think of mixing. I always have a rack that I keep out in my dressing room with a week’s worth of options. I love to pull out old favorites and use new pieces: It’s almost like the “no fear” week and anything goes. Plus it’s a great excuse to purchase a few new pieces! I also always like to wear a beanie during Fashion Week—my favorites are from Marc Jacobs. I buy all the colors every season and even double up on a few of my favorites—inevitably one goes missing in a taxi or an Uber! I attended Spring 2016 London Fashion Week as an ambassador for Net-a-Porter’s The Net Set. As the only designer who is a member of their Style Council I was thrilled to have the opportunity to experience the collections in this way; I found the shows there incredibly inspiring. Christopher Kane, Emilia Wickstead, and Erdem were the highlights of the trip and opened me up to wanting to try and wear more floral and take more color risks for spring.

The Most Stunning Flowers of Fashion Month

best flowers fashion month

Flowers? For spring? Well, maybe not groundbreaking. But when the flowers are for the Spring 2016 collections, they tend to be of note. Looking back at fashion month in New York, London, Milan, and Paris, stunning blooms popped up at dinners, after-parties, and shows: There were artful installations at Erdem Moralioglu’s Green Carpet Challenge event, rustic arrangements at The Row’s presentation dinner inside a French château, and let’s not forget the enormous man-made hill covered in 400,000 delphiniums that housed the Dior show. While everyone must wait to wear their favorite pieces from the runway, these 14 standout designs can be replicated right away . . . though the Dior hill might take some doing.

News in Brief: Report: Increase In Gun Sales To Be Most Concrete Result Of Obama’s Pro-Gun-Control Speech

WASHINGTON—Researchers at the Urban Institute published a study Friday confirming that a sharp increase in gun sales nationwide would be the most concrete result of the impassioned pro-gun-control speech that President Obama delivered following yesterday’s mass shooting in Oregon. “According to our analysis, by far the most tangible impact of the president emotionally urging the nation to consider how their votes can prevent mass shootings like this will be a 17 percent spike in revenue for firearm vendors across the U.S.,” said report co-author Kyle Bieler, who found a direct link between the estimated $ 58 million uptick in gun sales over the next month and Obama’s use of the phrases “common-sense legislation,” “only advanced country,” and “not enough.” “The portion of the president’s remarks in which he asked for support from state legislatures and governors will, based on our projections, nearly double the number of …

The 7 Most Damaging Phrases In A Relationship

Sharing relationship concerns with your spouse requires a very deft hand. Some of us are better at communicating complaints than others — only an amateur, for instance, would dare to say “you’re overreacting!” in the middle of an argument.

But it’s always a good idea to brush up on your communication skills. Below, relationship experts share seven phrases you should nix from your vocabulary and what you should say instead.

1. “I think you need to calm down.”

It can feel belittling and condescending when a partner raises his voice at you. But it’s equally condescending to tell him to “just calm down” in response, said Andra Brosh, a Los Angeles-based psychologist.

“This phrase aggravates a situation much more than it helps,” she said. “Telling someone to calm down is infantilizing and it sends the message that your partner’s feelings are intolerable to you.”

When your partner is upset, remind yourself that what he needs most in that moment is validation and compassion, Brosh said.

“It’s better to say something like, ‘I’m so sorry you’re so upset — let’s just sit down for a minute and breathe together’ or ‘I want to understand why you’re so upset but it’s hard to understand when you yell,'” she said.

2. “You don’t ever help out with the kids.”

If you and your partner have kids, there are going to be times where one of you feels like you’re doing more of the hands-on, day-to-day parenting. While it’s important you tell your partner she needs to step up her parenting game, don’t be blunt about it, said Detroit-based relationship coach Lisa Schmidt.

“Rather than saying something like, ‘You don’t ever help with the kids,’  try to focus on the positive,” she said. “Tell your wife, ‘Seth just loves it when you’re there to pick him up from practice. He really lights up when he sees your car.”

Then sort out the logistics of pickups and drop-offs on a weekly basis, Schmidt suggested. “Set aside 15 minutes each Sunday to plan the week, so both parents are getting in time with the kids.”

3. “You never listen to me.”

Actually, don’t ever use the word never.

“It’s a way of shutting your partner out while leaving them feeling hopeless. It creates a sense of finality which leaves no room for further discussion,” Brosh said.

Instead of saying, “You never listen to me,” for example, Brosh said it’s better to say something along the lines of, “When you’re on your cellphone during conversations I feel like you’re not listening to me,” or ‘”There are times when I’m not sure you’re really listening to me.'”

4. “Nevermind, I’ll just do it myself.”

This phrase is just as dismissive and damaging as the example above, said Schmidt.

“When you say ‘nevermind,’ you’re rejecting your spouse and not allowing him to listen to what you need,” she said. “But a relationship is a partnership, not a personal platform to martyr yourself. Don’t diminish the talents, input and assistance your spouse can bring to any given situation.”

Instead, say, “I could really use your help with (insert problem). That would be such a time-saver or load off my back,” Schmidt said.

5. “I’m not happy…I want a divorce.”

If you have any interest in keeping your marriage alive, idle threats of divorce won’t fly, said Anne Crowley, an Austin, Texas-based psychologist.

“If you don’t have plans to initiate a divorce, threats like this weaken the foundation of the relationship.  It creates uncertainty and insecurities,” she said. “If you are not happy in the marriage, it’s OK to say that.  But also think: what do I want to do about it?

If the answer to that question is, “I want to make this marriage work,” opt for a more constructive approach — one that doesn’t include the “D” word, Crowley said.

“It might be better to say, ‘I’d like to improve our marriage, will you go to therapy with me?'”

6. “Is there someone else?”

You’re spending less and less time together, you’re rarely intimate and you began to wonder if there might be someone else in your partner’s life. While you need to address your concerns, you need to do it carefully and avoid jumping to conclusions,  said Crowley.

“Asking directly if there’s someone else is a harmful phrase because it challenges the integrity of your partner and brings trust, respect and fidelity into question.”

Plus, the accusation will likely be met with disbelief or anger from your partner or cause her to withdraw from the conversation, Crowley said.

“A better way to express this thought is to ask for the reassurance. Say, ‘I know things have been different between us but you and I are still in this together, right?'” she explained. “It gives your partner the opportunity to give you what you need — reassurance — instead of pushing her farther away.”

7. “I hate it when you do that.”

It may drive you up the wall when he leaves stray beard shavings in the sink or she seems more interested in her phone than you on date night. But try to keep your composure when you tell your partner how much it bothers you, said Schmidt.

“Couples need to be mindful of the use of words like hate — it has such a strong connotation,” she said.”Instead, reframe what you dislike to something involving praise for what really helps you out” — like cleaning up the sink or actively listening when you’ve finally managed to squeeze in a date night.

The 8 Most Overlooked Threats To A Marriage

We’re all familiar with the common, harmful mistakes people make in relationships: failing to communicate, having an affair or running into financial problems — just to name a few.

But beyond the usual suspects, what other relationship-testing problems should couples be aware of? Below, marriage therapists and relationship experts share some of the most overlooked threats to a marriage.

1. Thinking honesty is always the best policy.

Yes, being transparent about how you feel is generally the best route when having one of those Big Relationship Conversations. But communicating your feelings to your partner in an aggressive or sarcastic way is not the right way to do it, said Bonnie Kennan, a Southern California-based marriage counselor.

“When partners assume they can say whatever they feel, in a completely unbridled way, they often unwittingly do great harm to their partnerships and sometimes it’s irreparable damage,” she said.

In other words, your “I just have to be honest about how I feel” excuse isn’t going to fly. When you do catch yourself saying something overly critical, try to offset it with some positive remarks. Marital researcher John Gottman found that a ratio of 5:1 is necessary for marital health: five positive interactions for every negative interaction with your partner.

2. Buying into the idea that marriage transforms people.

Cornell University professor Karl Pillemer spent five years interviewing older couples for his book 30 Lessons for Living: Tried and True Advice from the Wisest Americans. In that time, he learned one critically important thing: It’s a huge, inexcusable mistake to go into a marriage believing you can change your partner. Marriage won’t solve all your relationship problems or make the two of you more compatible, he said.

“Treating your potential or current spouse as a do-it-yourself project is a recipe for failure,” he said. “Take, for example, your sense of humor: What he or she thinks is funny is important because it’s one thing that is certain not to change — and you will be stuck with it for many, many years. If his idea of high humor involves practical jokes and yours doesn’t, rest assured that you will not find the hand buzzer or the whoopee cushion more hilarious fifty years from now.”

3. Believing you can change your family’s opinion of your spouse.

If your partner and your parents fail to make nice before you wed, it’s not likely that a bond will form after you marry, said Kennan. And it’s a big mistake to believe your spouse can control his or her family and get you in their good graces, she added.

“While spouses need to stand up for each other, it is unwise to assume the family members will change their minds — some parents will never think anyone is good enough for their child,” she said. “The couple needs to be pleasant and polite with the family, while not trying to change the rigid system. This can be a big challenge if the two partners aren’t willing to do the work of neutralizing it.”

4. Ignoring what your partner said he wanted before you married.

When your partner tells you he or she doesn’t want kids or can’t wait to move out of your current state of residence, believe them. You’re not likely to change their minds on the important issues once you marry, said Becky Whetstone, marriage and family therapist based in Little Rock, Arkansas.

“Maybe when you were dating, your future life-mate told you things like they wanted to move out of state or weren’t that into sex,” she said. “You heard these warnings, knew they were out of sync with what you wanted, but went ahead with the relationship. The reality is, you can’t get them to change their mind.”

5. Expecting marriage to be easy.

Repeat this to yourself before even considering walking down the aisle: Marriage is hard work — worthwhile, valuable work but still hard work. Few engaged couples really take the time to absorb that before saying “I do,” but the reality is, it’s what needs to be foremost in their minds, said Pillemer.

“To stay married for life requires resilience, spirit, and discipline. It also requires an acceptance of predictable stressors and unexpected difficulties, without giving up,” he said. “Like many good things in life, the immediate gain sometimes has to be sacrificed for a long-term payoff — like winding up still in love with someone after a half century.”

6. Putting your spouse on a pedestal.

You go into your marriage thinking your partner is really something special. (Otherwise, why would you say “I do”?) But idealize your spouse a little too much and you risk disappointment when you find out they’re only human, said Whetstone.

“The problem with over-idealizing someone is that sooner or later you’ll realize they aren’t the infallible person you thought they were and they’ll tumble down to reality,” she said.

7. Not setting boundaries on what is shared outside the relationship.

If you’re an oversharer and your partner likes to keep his personal life under wraps, it doesn’t bode well for the relationship, said Kennan.

“If one partner is very comfortable turning to friends and family members for support when he has a problem and the other is not, it creates a pattern where partner B is nervous about being candid and shuts down the flow of sharing,” she said. “At the same time, partner A may feel stifled and lonely without a support system.”

To address the issue, Kennan said couples need to anticipate this issue and set up rules for disclosure of information to people outside the marriage.

“You’ll probably have to operate outside of your own comfort zone to accommodate your partner’s needs and feelings,” she explained.

8. Putting too much stock in the belief that opposites attract.

You’re a left-leaning introvert whose ideal weekend is a good “Masterpiece Theatre” binge-fest. Your partner is an Republican-voting extrovert who loves to travel and tries to maximize each weekend. While it’s nice to believe opposites attract and love conquers all (hey, it worked for Mary Matalin and James Carville!), it’s a mistake to invest too deeply the idea, said Pillemer.

“I interviewed couples who’ve been married for years and their strongest recommendation was simple: Marry someone a lot like you,” he explained. “Marriage is difficult for anyone, but it’s much easier with someone who shares your interests and background. Small differences can spice up a relationship but what has to be almost identical are core shared values on money, career goals, child-raising and sex.”

Where New York’s Most Fashionable People Shop

by Jayna Maleri, Condé Nast Traveler

2015-09-18-1442600951-2740581-1.jpg
Courtesy The Line

These are the vintage boutiques, bookstores, and shops where you’re most likely to spot the New York Fashion Week crowd.

New York Fashion week kicks off tomorrow, which means this (already chic) city is about to get an extra dose of style. Editors, photographers, designers, bloggers, and street style stars will be seen scurrying from one show to another as quickly as their (improbably high) heels will take them, but even in a packed week of fashion shows, presentations, dinners, parties, and industry events, there’s always time for a little shopping. We asked some of our favorite tastemakers where they shop when they’re in town for the shows, and these are a few of their can’t-miss spots.

1. THE LINE AND THE APARTMENT

If there’s one thing New York’s fashionable set can agree on, it’s that no visit to New York is complete without a stop at The Line and The Apartment on Greene Street in SoHo. Created by twins Kate and Morgan Wendelborn and stylist Vanessa Traina, stepping into the light-filled space is a great way to leave the city behind, if only for a few moments. “There is no better escape from the streets of New York Fashion Week than The Line and The Apartment,” says Traina. “You can put your feet up for a minute while shopping a beautifully curated selection of fashion and home and beauty goods. You will no doubt walk out with a new fashion week wardrobe of our classic and covetable pieces.” Style star (and Condé Nast Travelercontributing editor) Sofia Sanchez de Betak agrees: “It’s the most comfortable place to shop in the city,” she says “It just feels like you’re at home.”

2. DE VERA ANTIQUES

For vintage finds and exquisite antique jewelry, head to the well-curated De Vera Antiques on Crosby Street. “Every object is chosen with an impeccable eye, and you can expect to find ancient Roman glass next to Meiji period kokeishi dolls,” says brand consultant and curator Hikari Yokoyama. “The owner also makes jewelery from antique pieces like Georgian brooches, hand-cut diamonds, and Sardinian coral. Prices can be shocking,” she warns, “but it is still worth a visit. And don’t be shy–ask questions about the objects, you’ll leave with a mini history lesson.” You also might spot designer Isabel Marant, who calls De Vera “My very own cabinet de curiosités.”

3. FIVESTORY

Though much of the action during New York Fashion Week takes place downtown, Fivestory, Claire Distenfeld’s multi-floor shopping experience on the Upper East Side, is a guaranteed way to get the fashion-focused to venture above 14th Street. “New York has a wonderful culture of multi-brand stores where you can always discover new things,” says Hikari Yokoyama “Fivestory is one of my favorites.” It’s also tops fashion consultant and street style star Miroslava Duma’s list. “I love how elegant everything is in Fivestory and how Claire is taking chances with young, not-yet-established designers,” says Duma. “Everyone should try to take time during fashion week to pop in this very inspiring store.”

4. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

For anyone looking to hit the throwback jackpot, vintage store What Goes Around Comes Around on West Broadway has the potential for major payoff. The flagship store, which opened in 1993 (and has since spun off locations in Los Angeles, East Hampton, and Kuwait City) is the best place to go to find luxe secondhand goods, from labels like Chanel, Hermes, and Comme des Garcons. “Shopping here is like a treasure hunt,” says System Magazine co-founder Elizabeth von Guttman. And for those even more adventurous shoppers, here’s a tip, courtesy of Hikari Yokoyama: “You can make an appointment to visit their warehouse, and they’ll let you dig through the massive spread of Americana-focused treasures they have there.”

5. THE STRAND BOOKSTORE

A New York institution, which famously carries “18 miles of books,” Strand Book Store is a bibliophile’s paradise on Broadway that has been selling new, used, and rare books since 1927. It’s also an unlikely spot to recharge between shows. “I love to go there just to relax and look through old books,” says Sofia Sanchez de Betak. And model/stylist Tati Cotilar puts it even more succinctly when she says: “It’s the best bookstore downtown.”

Real and Simple No. 3: Answers to Your Most Basic Etiquette Questions

Number three on my list of most-asked etiquette questions includes both business and social quandaries, with answers to help you move gracefully through your day.

When applying for a job, is it okay to ask about salary range? As a job candidate, you are within your rights to ask about salary range. It’s not okay to ask how you measure up against other candidates.

When out to lunch on a job interview, is it okay to order a sandwich? Job interview food can be tricky. It’s okay to order a sandwich, but steer clear of spaghetti. No one wants red sauce on his or her white shirt. The best choice would be grilled meat or fish.

Is it okay to serve liqueurs during lunch? Liqueurs are not served with lunch unless the event is a formal diplomatic affair.

Should children be admitted to live theatre? Of course children are meant to attend theater staged expressly for them, but as a general rule they should not attend live theatre for adults; they are simply too fidgety and can disturb other patrons.

Do you have to RSVP when you cannot attend an event? It’s always courteous to respond, whether the answer is yes or no.

In the English style of service, is the food presented on a platter then plated at a nearby table? This style of service is Russian. The English style is when food is presented on platters and you serve yourself (see Downton Abbey).

To engage in small talk, do you only need to read the headlines of a newspaper? A good rule is to know a little about a lot of things. Read anything and everything, not just the headlines. And don’t forget the sports section!

When setting the table with place cards, should you add the person’s honorific? You may add Dr., as in Dr. Samuel Johnson, but not academic degrees, as in Samuel Johnson, Ph.D.

After listening to a speaker, is it okay to ask questions? Most speakers appreciate an audience interested enough to ask questions. If you are responding to something the speaker said, repeat the remark before you ask your question.

When taking a telephone message, should you always ask a person why he or she is calling? No, the reason for the call should not be asked. The person answering the phone should simply ask the caller’s name, repeat and confirm the message, and ask how the call can be returned.

One Of The Most Important Parenting Decisions You Can Make

An all-new season of Dr. Phil premieres September 14!

Do you have goals for your children? Would you recognize what a good outcome for him/her is as an adult? One of the most important and exciting decisions you can make as a parent is to define success goals for your child, tools that serve as guidance systems for you and you children. Once you decide the goals that will serve as the measure of your child’s success, those goals will help you make decisions throughout the child’s trip to adulthood. Choosing, communicating and pursuing clear and age-appropriate goals for your child will give them a sense of purpose that brings them the experience of mastering their world as they achieve the designated benchmarks in their life. It will also bond you and your child, bringing you together and energizing you both.

Loving parents choose to take responsibility for their child’s direction in life. You must determine both the path and the destination for the adult you are raising, or prepare yourself to deal with potentially disastrous consequences down the road. As you learn more about your child, as your child learns more about himself or herself, you become partners in defining success in life – and in designing the plans for pursuing it. Until then it is your job, and you need to do it.

Parents need to discipline themselves before they can discipline their children. One of the most important parental self-disciplines is forcing yourself to move from the general to the specific. Rather than saying, “I just want little Susie to be happy,” you need to define clearly what sort of happiness you are talking about. Happy as in giddy with laughter? Or happy as in living an authentic and fulfilling life? Does happiness mean that little Susie has good friends, close family or an outstanding academic record? Maybe it’s all of the above. Whatever the heck it is, the parents need to define it so they can cut a path to it and know it when Susie’s got it. First, you decide what your destination will be, and then you look for the best route to get there.

Clear guidelines make it much easier for your children to make their own decisions and, in the process, develop their problem-solving skills while using your criteria. That is what parenting with purpose is all about.

Most adults have a basic grasp of goal-setting, but sometimes they need ways to measure and monitor their child’s progress. I have designed a short audit to stimulate your thinking about the goals you want to set for your child. Take a minute for this short questionnaire to see where you are and where you need to be.

Select one of the two descriptions from each set:

1. Your goal is trying to deal with each crisis as it happens.
2. You are achieving at least one step toward a goal every day.

1. You feel that you are happy if the kids don’t create a crisis today.
2. You feel some accomplishment if you can see some steps toward a goal today, even if there is a crisis, because there are times when crisis serves as a step.

1. You think a goal is to keep your child from causing a disruption in your plans.
2. You feel that if your child doesn’t create a challenge, that you are not fulfilling a goal of expression and authenticity.

1. You want your child just to be quiet and accept your rules with no question.
2. You encourage your child to ask questions, even if they challenge your ideas.

1.  Your motto is: “Children should be seen but not heard.”
2. Your motto is: “Children grow into life by being respected and acknowledged.”

1. You had the idea that your child would be a source of glue for the family.
2. You had the idea that your child should receive your attention for his or her individual abilities and interests.

1. You are committed to controlling, directing and maintaining an environment that is described as excellent by your ideals or some other authority, like your own parents, social group or community.
2. You are committed to the protection, socialization and authentic development of your child, regardless of the external sources that might define these for you.

1. You have not defined what your goals for your child are, other than to get them through their teens without drugs, pregnancy or flunking out of school.
2. You have definite goals for your child, such as learning empathy, finding resources and personal goals or working toward discovering skills for success.

1. Your usual goal for the day is to have the child complete his or her assigned tasks and stay out of your way.
2. Your usual goal for the day is to see some learning in your child about himself or herself that promotes better understanding of abilities or insight in the world.

If you selected ANY of the statements listed first (1.), I want you to decide immediately to develop a plan with specific goals. For each first statement (1.) you circled, add 10 percent to the probability that you will have major problems with your child by the time of 17.

If you notice, the statements listed first (1.) are descriptive of those behaviors that do not immediately and deliberately lead to goals of success for your children. Those listed second (2.) confirm that you are on course toward your goals. It might be helpful for you to retake this little exercise every week or so to monitor your progress.

The Most Romantic Labor Day Escape Is Closer Than You Think

date night museum

Sure, it’s Labor Day weekend—the last stretch of summer before the AC-blasted return to the sterile cubicle. You’re probably feeling tempted to skip town with the beau and enjoy a hair-tossing adventure in the Hamptons or a last-minute frolic on the Burning Man playa. Hell, you may even book a long weekend to Ibiza and call it a year. But the idea of those FOMO-fueled, Instagram-inspired jaunts can be exhausting. What’s so attractive about capping the hot weather season off with jet lag and a suitcase full of dirty laundry? Consider this: Maybe your escape is much closer than you think. Maybe it doesn’t require a suitcase, a time change, traffic, or the TSA pat-down. Maybe it’s a museum! The romantic nature of the exhibit-trawling outing is not to be underestimated—there’s an intimacy to wandering huge, beautiful spaces together, your voices hushed in respectful tones. You’re exploring, you’re learning something new, and also, it may be worth noting, you’re in the AC.

Need some inspiration? At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the record-breaking “China: Through the Looking Glass” exhibition is extended until September 7, along with late-night hours tonight and tomorrow. A wealth of fashion (ranging from the traditional Manchu robe to contemporary Chinese-inspired designs by Tom Ford and John Galliano) combines with a deep visual history, including Ming furniture and ancient perfume bottles for something that exists nowhere else. So why not take advantage before it ends?

As for the night at the museum attire? Half the fun’s in dressing up. Take inspiration from the guests of this year’s Met Gala and elevate your wing-hopping look. Maybe it is something à la Beyonce with a polka-dot, curve-skimming frock. Or maybe take some editorial cues from a Mario Testino–lensed Joan Smalls and opt for a white pantsuit. And when in doubt? Keep it classic with a polished jacket and skirt set—plus a pop of color derived from an accessory. After all, plane tickets come and go—but this exhibition is once in a lifetime. Dress accordingly.

The Most Outrageous Outfits At The 2015 VMAs

When it comes to fashion at the MTV Video Music Awards (aka the VMAs), we never quite know what to expect.

The awards show is by far the craziest of the year, as celebs go all out and nothing is off limits. (We all remember Rose McGowan’s infamous chain dress circa 1998).

And this year didn’t disappoint. Miley Cyrus stepped out wearing next to nothing, Britney Spears left little to the imagination in a short, tight, sheer number, while Serayah looked shredder-chic in a white dress.

Below, check out the most outrageous outfits of the night.

News in Brief: Department Of Labor Study Confirms Your Job Most Demanding

WASHINGTON—Noting that the level of mental strain associated with the profession was far and away the highest recorded, a federal study on workplace conditions and occupational stress released Thursday has confirmed that your job is the most demanding career in the entire nation, and that none of your friends or family fully understand how hard it is. “Following a thorough review of every occupation cataloged by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we found that your job and yours alone exceeds all others as the most professionally strenuous and personally taxing choice of career, which creates levels of stress far beyond the comprehension of any friend or family member,” said Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez, who noted that while your career may share certain similarities with those of siblings, roommates, or acquaintances, none of their complaints about fatigue or anxiety remotely measure up to yours given the extreme complexity and …

Vogue Editors Pick the Boyfriend Jeans They’d Most Like to Borrow

editors pick boyfreind jeans

The continued prevalence of menswear-inspired womenswear means now is the time to take things one step further with pieces literally borrowed from the boys—in fact, straight from their closets. This is nothing new when it comes to occasionally nicking an oversize button-down or pair of boxers from the man in your life, but denim? That’s a bit trickier, and for many, entirely uncharted territory. Modern-day boyfriend jeans, while indisputably stylish, can feel one-dimensional, with most pairs offering the same effect: a roomy silhouette that’s a touch masculine, a touch undone—but a bit familiar.

In search of a pair that feels fresh for fall, we asked a smattering of Vogue editors which boyfriend jeans throughout history they’d most like to borrow. Patchwork jeans, flared silhouettes, washes from white to deep indigo, and distressed, paint-splattered denim all made the list, as well as classic variations found on the usual suspects. From Jimi Hendrix’s famous snake-hipped flares to Martin Sheen’s fitted straight-leg jeans in Badlands or the modern-day distressed white jeans worn by Kanye West, it seems, when it comes to boyfriend jeans the options are endless—we just need to look in the right, unexpected places.

Real and Simple No. 1: Answers to Your Most Basic Etiquette Questions

Oprah may have her list of favorite things, but I have my list of “most asked” etiquette questions. If you want to be in the know, or simply want to know the right thing to say or do in different situations, life just got that much easier.

• If I am at at a private home and I break something, should I offer to replace it? Accidents at parties are common. If you break something, it’s basic etiquette to offer to replace the item, even though breakage is considered to be a price of home entertaining. The guest is ultimately not responsible.

When in a synagogue, am I required to wear a yamaka if I am not Jewish? Even non-Jewish men are required to wear a yamaka (a skullcap, also known as a yarmulke or a kippah) at a Jewish ceremony. Women may or may not be asked to wear one. But only Jewish men wear a tallit (a prayer shawl).

Is it okay to eat berries with my fingers? Berries are eaten with a spoon if served without stems. Berries with stems, such as strawberries, may be eaten with the fingers.

If someone accidentally uses your bread plate at a dinner, should you ask the waiter for another one? Don’t ask for another plate, as this will crowd the table. The easiest solution is to use the rim of your dinner plate.
• How many times is it appropriate to go back and forth with an email for business? Three times is the rule; then pick up the telephone.

• Is it okay to attend a Catholic funeral if I am not Catholic? Yes. Non-Catholics may attend Catholic funerals and other Masses, although they may not receive Communion.

Is it okay to take my seat if I arrive late to a talk or lecture? If you can slip in quietly, do so; otherwise, stand in the back of the room until the presentation is done.

If an employee issue arises, should I handle it myself or ask a higher authority for help? Never attempt to go to a higher authority unless you cannot take care of the problem first yourself.

How should I introduce my boss to a client? The rule is to say the most important person’s name first. In business, the client is considered the most important person, even though your boss is your superior. Simply say something along the lines of “Mr. Client, I’d like to introduce Mr. Boss, my manager. Mr. Boss, this is Mr. Client, our new client.” It doesn’t matter if the client is younger than your boss or if your boss is male or female; always introduce the client first.

Most Americans Don’t Think Divorce Is A Sin

(RNS) In a summer of celebrity splits — Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Miss Piggy and Kermit — a question comes up for many Christians.

Is it a sin — cohabitating Muppets aside — to break up a marriage?

If you’ve got a good reason for divorce — adultery, abuse, addiction or abandonment — fewer than 1 in 4 Americans would call that a sin, a new LifeWay Research survey finds.

The survey of 1,000 U.S. adults finds only a minority would call divorce a sin even when:

  • There’s adultery (39 percent).
  • The two people no longer love each other (38 percent).
  • One spouse has abandoned the other (38 percent).
  • One spouse is abusing the other (37 percent).
  • A spouse is addicted to pornography (35 percent).

However, 37 percent say divorce is not a sin in any of those circumstances.

People who identify as Christians were slightly more likely to see sin in those divorcing over abuse (43 percent) or abandonment (43 percent) or pornography addiction (39 percent).

And more than 4 in 10 Protestants (43 percent) think it’s sinful for couples to split over a lack of love, according to the survey, which has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

“Hopefully, they are basing their view of what is sin by what the Bible says,” said Scott McConnell, vice president of LifeWay Research.

“Clearly in Scripture, God indicates that he doesn’t like divorce. But Jesus did have things to say about this.”

In Matthew 19:6, Jesus tells the Pharisees: “What God has joined together, man must not separate.” However, Jesus adds an exception in verse 8 — “sexual immorality.”

A second survey, of 1,000 Protestant pastors, found that 61 percent saw sin in couples giving up a loveless marriage.

The surveys of all Americans and of pastors were conducted in September 2014, when celebs Lambert and Shelton, Garner and Affleck and the Muppet couple, about to star in a new TV show, were all presumably still together.

Last week, Miss Piggy squealed about her breakup on Facebook in a perfect parody of celebrity split announcements:

“After careful thought, thoughtful consideration and considerable squabbling, Kermit the Frog and moi have made the difficult decision to terminate our romantic relationship. Our personal lives are now distinct and separate, and we will be seeing other people, pigs, frogs, et al. This is our only comment on this private matter … unless we get the right offer.”

It would appear they no longer love each other. No sin in that, many would say.
