On to the Next: Vera Wang Still Going Strong After 60 Bridal Collections

“Deadly.”
That’s how Vera Wang sized up the two-and-a-half week-long lead-up to what is her 60th bridal collection. Seated in her Madison Park offices while lithesome models showed off her cool-girl wedding dresses, Wang said, “First there was ready-to-wear, then there was the Emmys in L.A. and then there was bridal. The investment in time, money, human resources and creativity is enormous on that kind of schedule. I can only compare it to maybe Pierpaolo [Piccioli] at Valentino, who has men’s, couture, ready-to-wear and then men’s again and couture. It’s a rough schedule if you do all of these collections.”
The milestone wasn’t ever a consideration for Wang, who said she is always up against it. “No, that didn’t even occur to me. I feel the same pressure every time I put a collection out. It doesn’t matter if it’s the 31st, 78th or the 16th. I pressure myself to be more creative, more of a thinker, and someone who is trying to envision things in a new way.”
From her standpoint, fashion’s always-on cycle asks a lot of designers, which is not the norm in other creative industries. “You don’t drop an album on schedule, but in fashion you are asked to be

Mustard might’ve dropped the “DJ” from his name but that doesn’t change the fact that the Grammy Award winning continues to grind like a disc jockey looking for that big break.

Today the LA representative links up with Future in the visuals for “Interstate 10” where they hatch a plan to pull off a bank heist only to show their faces and catch more enough bodies to spend the next few lifetimes behind bars. Wasn’t even no Popeyes Chicken Sandwiches to be had, b.

Miranda July’s New Scarves Are Your Next Wardrobe Workhorse

miranda july scarves

A year ago, author and artist Miranda July dipped a toe into the world of fashion design when she debuted her namesake bag for indie accessories favorite Welcome Companions. Now July is back with a new collaboration that should delight both the fashion set and her literary fans, having teamed up with Heart Heart Heart, the arty Parisian scarf brand (launched back in 2011) from Brazilian designer Iracema Trevisan.

After a chance meeting three years ago through their significant others, the duo stayed in touch; Trevisan was reading July’s recent The First Bad Man when creating the prints for her latest collection. (The designer cut her teeth designing textiles for Kenzo.) “She has this really dreamy thing about her work,” Trevisan tells Vogue.com. “She makes things seem real, but they always seem twisted in some way. People in fashion are always getting influenced by artists, but I wanted it to be something more [than just an influence]. I wanted it to be concrete, for people to be able to read things in the scarves.” After approaching July about the possibility of a collaboration, Trevisan was delighted to receive a speedy yes.

The writer, who dubs Heart Heart Heart’s aesthetic “a mixture of the mysterious and the mundane,” was sent an array of Trevisan’s designs, ranging from airplanes and question marks to chains and razor blades. “I almost approached them like little moments from movies,” July says. The resulting bite-size works that adorn the foulards are enigmatic and evocative. One reads: “Everything I said on the phone was a lie. I miss you horribly and there’s not a Japanese pro-skateboarder staying with me. Ok, there was, but it didn’t work out.” The shoppable goods aren’t the only winning result of the collaboration, to be sure: “We’re so lonely in our processes,” July laughs of the plight of so many creative types, “that it’s just fun—like, ‘Wow, we get to email with each other!’ when usually for both of us it’s a very solitary process from start to finish.”

Miranda July x Heart Heart Heart scarves will be available in December on heartheartheart.com.

ReThink Review: The Martian – Is Matt Damon the Next Tom Hanks?

Until seeing The Martian, it had never occurred to me that Matt Damon might soon be younger generations’ version of Tom Hanks. Both actors can handle comedy and drama, have been in a nice mix of Oscar contenders and crowd pleasers, do funny stuff on late night shows, and both display an effortless, non-threatening, regular-guy appeal that makes them easy to relate to and root for. But what really made me think about the similarities between the two actors is the fact that The Martian — about an astronaut (Damon) who gets stranded on Mars and the engineers, scientists, astrophysicists, and fellow astronauts trying to bring him home — can best be described as a combination of Apollo 13 and Cast Away, which feature two of Hanks’ most memorable performances. Watch the trailer for The Martian below.

To write this review, I decided to revisit Apollo 13, Ron Howard’s film about the near-disastrous 1970 mission to the Moon that left three astronauts stranded in space aboard a crippled vessel. I remember very much enjoying Apollo 13 when I saw it in 1995, and the film definitely holds up twenty years later. But rewatching it, I was surprised that I had forgotten that astronauts Jim Lovell (Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton), and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) don’t blast off until 35 minutes into the movie, and it isn’t until 50 minutes in before “Houston, we have a problem”. Those first 35 minutes are spent explaining things like the astronaut selection process, the home lives of the Apollo 13 astronauts, the training for their mission, and the state of NASA at a time when America had seemingly become bored with space travel. It’s interesting stuff that’s important in setting up the era the film takes place in, but compared to the excitement and peril to come in a movie that stretches to 140 minutes, it can feel somewhat slow on a second viewing.

In comparison, The Martian (which clocks in at 141 minutes) hits the ground running with astronaut/botanist Mark Portney (Damon) and the rest of the Ares 3 crew (Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Aksel Hennie) already on Mars and quickly finding themselves in trouble as a violent storm forces an emergency departure from the red planet, with Portney left behind and presumed dead. Obviously, Portney has survived the storm (not a spoiler!) and must use every scrap of equipment he can find, as well as all of the scientific/technical know-how and emotional strength he can muster, to survive the years until the next manned mission to Mars can rescue him. In the meantime, the best and brightest minds at NASA (led by Chiwetel Ejiofor as the Ares 3 mission director) work feverishly to come up with ways to help Portney survive while the Ares 3 crew contemplates a dangerous rescue mission of their own.

Like Apollo 13, a lot of the joy of The Martian is watching smart people improvising and working tirelessly to find ingenious ways to solve seemingly insurmountable obstacles in a film that celebrates science, teamwork, and intelligence. While the achievements of the thousands of non-astronaut men and women who make manned space travel possible often go unrecognized, it seems like they get their moments to shine in space disaster movies where the best ideas and keenest observations win, regardless of who they came from. As a lover of science, it’s hard not to be excited about a film where “I’m going to have to science the shit out of this” and “I did the math” are the most badass things a character can say. And with the recent, seemingly uncoincidental announcement just days ago of liquid water being found on Mars, we’re going to not only need to inspire kids to be the NASA geniuses of the future, but also to convince future generations to support their missions (budgetary constraints for future space exploration is a theme in both Apollo 13 and The Martian).

But The Martian is also about a man who must survive for years alone in a hostile environment, just as Hanks’ character must do in Cast Away as a FedEx manager stranded on a deserted island after a plane crash. Instead of Wilson the volleyball for conversation, Portney has a video log he’s keeping in case he or his remains are ever recovered. Like Wilson, it’s a convenient device that helps Portney explain his thoughts and activities to the audience instead of just watching him work and think in silence. The log also provides an opportunity for levity as the wisecracking, increasingly profane Portney brags about his accomplishments and indulges in some gallows humor about his setbacks and the absurdity of the odds he faces.

Even with such a talented supporting cast — which includes Jeff Daniels, Kristen Wiig, and Donald Glover — all those Portney monologues could’ve become insufferable in the hands of almost any other actor. In fact, one of the only actors I can think of with the same mix of warmth, charisma, humor, intelligence, and effortless likability is Tom Hanks, who most likely would’ve played Portney if The Martian had been made twenty years ago or Hanks looked as young as the now 45-year-old Damon. But with Hanks about to enter his sixties, he’ll soon be moving on to more grandpa roles, leaving the title of America’s Favorite Dad up for grabs. Despite some recent potential gaffes, I think it’s a role Damon is uniquely suited for. He may not be as silly as Hanks can be, but Damon’s sly sense of humor feels more modern — a funny, cool, politically progressive dad instead of a Hanksian goofball who a teenager today might roll her eyes at.

And from a career point of view, The Martian shows that Damon has just secured a big part of a very Hanks-like filmography.

Rolling Stones To Record New Album Next Year?

The Rolling Stones plan on recording a new album in 2016, guitarist Keith Richards told Rolling Stone magazine. “[A new album] looks closer,” he said. “Don’t know where, don’t know when yet. Michael Moore’s ‘Where To Invade Next’ Deserves The Nonpartisan Audience It Won’t Find

Michael Moore is the 21st century’s most famous documentarian, but not for the same reasons that Ken Burns and Werner Herzog and Errol Morris defined the genre in the previous century. Moore is hyper-aware of the platform he’s carved out for himself. It’s the same platform that got him booed at the Oscars and landed him on Time’s 2005 list of the globe’s most influential people. He galvanizes his core audience — liberals who criticize gun laws and long for universal healthcare — and alienates the non-choir folk who might actually have something to glean from his films.

That was blindingly transparent at Thursday’s opening-night Toronto Film Festival screening of Moore’s new documentary, “Where to Invade Next.” A packed house at the expansive Princess of Wales Theatre not only laughed at the movie’s many witty moments, but gleeful cheers and applause broke out at regular intervals as the film’s interview subjects pointed out the copious examples that prove America, however great, is culturally, politically and sociologically inferior t0 other countries. Sitting among the crowd, and agreeing with the bulk of their endorsements, I wondered whether what should be seen as a relatively nonpartisan doc would register anywhere outside of the admitted echo chamber that exists within the mainstream entertainment media. Will anyone who doesn’t already question America’s military industrial complex see this film? Aren’t proponents of women’s rights already aligned with the points Moore raises? Doesn’t anyone with half a brain think the country’s lack of paid-vacation laws is chintzy?

The answers to these questions, in all likelihood, are resounding affirmatives. That’s not to say that “Where to Invade Next” isn’t good. Its execution, in fact, is quite effective. It’s built on the guise of Moore assuming the Pentagon’s duties by “invading” — aka visiting — other countries to poach ideas that would make America a fairer, more hospitable place. Along the way, he learns that Italy provides citizens with eight weeks (!!!) of paid vacation. In France, school-cafeteria lunches are five-star affairs. Slovenia offers free college education. Portugal has decriminalized all drug use and seen its usage rates plummet. Women’s health clinics in Tunisia are government-funded.

Wouldn’t it be great if America emulated such policies? “Obviously,” the TIFF viewers shouted by way of periodic applause in response to the film’s talking heads, who blanch at the notion that the United States doesn’t offer the same advantages. The fact that “Where to Invade Next” is built with practical alternatives to America’s systemic flaws makes it a stirring work of political theater, and with only a gentle presence from Moore throughout, progressive audiences will continue to howl, just as they did at Thursday’s screening. But watching the movie with such a devout congregation was a living reminder that a Moore documentary serves constituents rather than the overall populace. With peachier projects like “Bowling for Columbine” and “Fahrenheit 9/11,” that was inevitable. With “Where to Invade Next,” which ends on a hopeful note and should be seen as Moore’s least parochial outing yet (there’s only one George W. Bush crack!), it’s just a shame. This isn’t a quote-unquote liberal movie — it’s a look at the decency that exists across the globe but is often undervalued on our home turf.

Harold Koda to Retire from Costume Institute Next Year

ON A HIGH NOTE: Like everything he does behind the scenes as well as in the public eye, Harold Koda, curator in charge of the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is meticulously preparing for his retirement in the early part of next year.
A Costume Institute spokeswoman declined to comment Monday, but Koda confirmed his plans. Having returned in 2000 at the request of former director Philippe de Montebello to oversee the Costume Institute’s de-concessioning, Koda’s first four-year run there was under the guardianship of his predecessor, the late Richard Martin.
Up to his elbows working on the upcoming Jacqueline de Ribes exhibition, Koda was far from wistful. Energized by the Met’s surging attendance for “China: Through the Looking Glass,” Koda said he, Andrew Bolton, their 30-person team and the institution are working closely to ensure that there is no disruption in the various programs that are planned. He also said — repeatedly — that the transition is set to be as seamless as possible.
“Incredibly fun” as the exhibitions and other publicized aspects of his job are, Koda said he actually prefers the behind-the-scenes elements or as he put it “sort of the unglamorous part.” Singling out the 2008

Infographic: Is The Nation Ready For The Next Katrina?

Friday marks the 10-year anniversary of when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and many commentators have argued that not enough has been done over the past decade to address infrastructure and emergency response issues that could put coastal cities nationwide, including New Orleans, at risk of a catastrophe on a similar scale. Is the nation prepared for another Katrina?

  • Cities can adequately prepare residents for life after a natural disaster by razing low-income neighborhoods beforehand
  • Every household should have an emergency storm preparedness kit that includes an extra five stories of elevation
  • Learning from the humiliation of Katrina, FEMA has stockpiled almost 10,000 body bags to avoid any potential shortages
  • Every family should designate a fixed point to gather to watch disaster footage on TV
  • Citizens nationwide can prepare for disasters by having a stash of sympathetic Facebook posts and tweets ready to go
  • To avoid the most devastating …

Ben Higgins Named The Next ‘Bachelor’

Ladies, line up, because there’s a new Bachelor in town … and he’s a fan favorite.

Ben Higgins, who was “Bachelorette” star Kaitlyn Bristowe’s third choice, was named the new star of “The Bachelor” on Monday night’s episode of “After Paradise.”

The 26-year-old was pretty much a shoo-in to star on the upcoming season after Bachelor Nation supported his campaign following his exit from “The Bachelorette” on July 13. Although, Season 11’s Nick Viall did give Higgins a run for his money.

“I think he would be a great choice […] I have a lot of respect for Ben H. He is as sweet as everyone thinks he is,” Viall told HuffPost’s “Here to Make Friends” podcast earlier this month. “I might be giving myself too much credit, but Ben kind of reminds me of when I was 26.”

Higgins seemed to be everyone’s No. 1 choice. Even Amy Schumer called into “After Paradise” to wish him luck. “Find love, and then send some my way, OK?” she said.

The software salesman is excited to begin his journey on the show. “It’s incredible. People like me don’t get opportunities like this,” Higgins told Harrison. “I never thought that this opportunity would be something I could have.”

Higgins will be on “Good Morning America” to chat more about his upcoming season on Tuesday morning.

Donald Trump’s Red Plastic Cups Are Ready For Your Next House Party

For Donald Trump, campaign buttons and yard signage just don’t cut it (though, worry not, he’s monetizing those, too). The 2016 Republican presidential hopeful is getting into crucial housewares, selling “campaign party cups” in his online store. The 16-ounce vessels closely resemble Solo cups, the plastic classics that college kids around the country use for drinking games like beer pong and flip cup. One can’t help but to think a fratty demographic may be the product’s main target.

While any house party host can pick up a 50-pack of Solo cups at Walmart for less than $ 8, a three-pack of Trump’s slogan-stamped cups cost $ 3.

According to the product page, Trump’s cups are “proudly made in USA,” presumably in line with the candidate’s promise to “make America great again!”

For supportive sippers who prefer drinking straight from the can, Trump is also selling American-made koozies to keep beverages cool while screaming his name. A 6-pack of these goes for $ 20.

Trump is not the only 2016 hopeful making the most of the Foodie Generation, offering culinary accessories with which supporters can decorate their kitchens or guzzle beer. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has “Chillary” koozies available on her campaign site, as well as cookie cutters, pint glasses, coffee mugs and the “Grillary Clinton Spatula.”

GOP candidate Jeb Bush, too, has turned to the kitchen to earn support. His $ 75 guacamole bowl – er, “Guaca Bowle” — looks like it will last for years to come, no matter who wins this race.

I Got Divorced At 37 And Never Expected What Came Next

This Is Divorce At…” is a HuffPost Divorce series delving into divorce at every stage of life. Want to share your experience of divorcing at a certain age? Email us at divorce@huffingtonpost.com.

After 12 years, journalist Tracy Brown Hamilton and her husband both realized they’d become “really good friends” struggling to hold their marriage together.

At age 37 and with no children between them, Brown Hamilton and her husband decided to split.

“Within six months of our parting, we had both realized how happy we were with the decision and the gamble we took,” the writer told The Huffington Post.

Below, Brown Hamilton tells us more about the beautiful turn of events that unfolded after the divorce.

“My ex-husband and I ended our marriage over a beer, a decision we avoided for a while and for which we were both relieved — and sad and scared — to have reached.

I was 37 and we were living in Haarlem, in the Netherlands. We had no children — something I was never sure I wanted — but when you divorce at 37 it’s hard not to consider that you are closing the door on having a family.

Tracy in Paris a few months before her marriage ended.

After twelve years of what began as a romantic adventure but had started to feel like a Tom and Jerry cartoon, I thought perhaps I was too selfish to be a good partner.

Being single for the first time in what was then a third of my life, my options felt head-spinningly limitless. I could go anywhere and do anything. But mostly I sat alone on my balcony, drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.

A friend of mine — my first boyfriend, actually — was living in Shanghai at the time, and offered me his apartment while he traveled for the summer. He mailed me his keys and, in a bit of a mental fog, I went to China.

I did my best to be adventurous and open — sort of an Eat, Pray, Love cliché — but after a few days, I found myself sitting on my friend’s balcony, drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.

My only epiphany on that trip was that I wanted to go home. Ending my marriage didn’t necessitate a complete life overhaul; it just meant I had to get on with the new normal.

I returned to Haarlem, and on my first day back to work, I got fired. I spent a day in bed staring at the ceiling, wondering if truly I would end up living in my sister’s attic after all.

An English-language editor in the Netherlands, work possibilities were limited. A friend — a 50-year old Irish man– suggested I contact former colleagues in the states, and by the end of the week I had enough freelance work to sustain me.

And I got reminders from friends and former colleagues that I was competent, capable, resilient.

My Irish man and I started what we eventually called dating, but what was mostly going for walks and experimenting with cooking. We binge-watched HBO’s ‘Rome.’ We discovered and embraced our domestic selves.

We were partners. It felt good to be accountable, thoughtful, part of a team. Six months later, I was pregnant. When our son was 8 months old, I was pregnant again, and when our daughter was 8 months old, we were expecting our third child.

Tracy and her family.

I got divorced at 37, and by 40 was remarried, had launched a journalism career and had three beautiful children.

Divorce also enabled my ex and me to like each other again. We’re friends and I’m grateful.

For me, divorce at 37 meant I was equipped with enough ‘past’ — in the professional, relationship, and general maturity sense — to land on my feet, while still having enough ‘future’ to take life in a new direction.”

Is The Def Jam Story The Next Hip-Hop Biopic?

Does this look familiar to you? Do you remember Krush Groove?
Krush_Groove

This movie is called “Krush Groove” and it was supposedly the story of early Def Jam, made in 1985! Here is the description:

In the movie, Russell Walker has signed all of the hottest acts to his Krush Groove record label, including Run-D.M.C., Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde (Alonzo Brown), and Kurtis Blow. Rick Rubin produces their records. When Run-D.M.C. has a hit record and Russell doesn’t have the money to press records, he borrows money from a street hustler. At the same time, Russell and his brother Run are both competing for the heart of R&B singer-percussionist Sheila E. Also appearing in the film are LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, New Edition, the Fat Boys and some of their songs, as well as others from the likes of Chaka Khan, Debbie Harry, and the Gap Band. Members of the R&B group Full Force also make a cameo in the film as bodyguards.

Anyway, that was a long, long time ago – 30 years! The word on the street is that a revised, more truthful look at Def Jam Records as a movement. I’m thinking it could happen and be an epic story! Thoughts?

What Next on the Slippery Slope to Freedom?

One of my female friends has the view that monogamy is tantamount to slavery of men. Once you control a man’s access to sex, you own him.

This discussion requires some background briefing.

Fact: Men are happy when they are rubbing their penises on pleasant people or things. Or if they think they might soon. Or if they recently did. During other times, men are not as likely to be happy. But men are also human beings, and so they blame their bad moods on things like “stress” or a bad day at work.

Women can fact-check that claim by querying a man about his mood immediately before, during, or after sex. Now compare that answer to any randomly picked minute of the rest of his day. You might see a pattern.

That’s the Moist Robot idea in a nutshell. Our bodies and the environment jack our body chemistry, the chemistry changes what we think and how we feel, and the result is our moods. The more common view of the world is that our moods are somehow a mind-generated problem that can be fixed by thinking better, resolving annoyances, or by taking prescription meds. But sometimes the world is simpler. I can’t speak for women, but most men are going to be in a good mood if you offer them a sandwich and oral sex for lunch. Even if they say no. It just feels good to be asked.

And ladies, if a guy thinks he has a chance of getting that sort of lunch now or any day in the infinite future, and you ask him to hand-wash your car, he will probably rearrange his schedule and maybe power-wash your driveway too. Just in case. Because it might be a good investment in the future.

Hence, some people would say monogamy is male slavery disguised by words such as soul-mate and “good man.”

The man might tell himself that he does nice things because he is a nice guy, or that no one can wash cars as well as he can. But in reality the man just loves sandwiches for lunch and he doesn’t want to die lonely. He’s not a liar; he just doesn’t know that his body is driving his moods, not vice-versa. We are all under the persistent illusion that our bad moods are caused by the “problems” in our lives as opposed to the chemistry inside your skulls.

But here’s the interesting trend I see emerging. This is where we get to the good part.

Monogamy and marriage made economic sense when the family model involved a working (or hunting) dad and a child-rearing, cooking, mom. In this arrangement the man gives up his option to pursue multiple sex partners and in return he gets the benefits of a mate who can do the things he can’t. The two halves of the marriage make a whole. Plus you get the soul mate thing, love, heirs, and other good stuff. And obviously married women are also giving up their options for lovers and whatnot as well.

Fast-forward to 2015 when gender distinctions are narrowing. The economic value of spouses has been reduced because of the rise of alternatives. Today women can do all the hunting and working they want. A man can hire a surrogate to carry a baby to term. A woman can go to a sperm bank for a father. The man can hire nannies, drivers, tutors, cooks, and more. So the job of “spouse” is simply less important than at any time in history. Women don’t need spouses for income or protection, and men no longer need a spouse to carry a baby, so long as a willing stranger wants to do it for money. And obviously there is adoption.

Today only the rich can afford to outsource the work of an entire spouse. But most of those “spouse functions” will soon be automated and less expensive for all. Food will arrive at your door by inexpensive drone, with perfectly balanced meals customized to each person. Self-driving cars with cameras are probably the safest way to transport a kid, and someday probably the cheapest. And I expect apps to come along that match bored senior citizens with neighborhood kids that need to be watched while a parent works. My point is that the option to outsource a spouse – either male or female – is moving down market quickly. I think it will be a middle-class option in ten years.

And then what happens to monogamy? Obviously many people will prefer monogamy and the traditional family unit for personal or religious reasons. It has its advantages. But monogamy will no longer be the economic and social necessity it once was. And at that point you might see a social movement to free men from the biological oppression of monogamy so they might seek happiness for the first time in modern history.

Everyone is different, but generally speaking, men aren’t happy without a sex life. And monogamy usually leads to a sexless future (typically defined as sex once per month or less.) Science tells us humans lose sexual interest in a mate over time, and no amount of magical thinking can stop biology’s slow march.

In 2015 men have the option of either giving up happiness to monogamy or being lonely and childless. I think we will see better options emerging now that the majority of adults in the United States are single. I predict that you will see an emergence of more complicated multi-person virtual “tribes” of single people who are taking care of each others’ needs in various areas so a spouse is unnecessary.

The only gating factor I see is the added health risks of multiple partners. But I’ll bet science can fix all of that in ten years with nano-robots, stem cells, and Indogene* skin. And let’s be honest about the negative health impact of a sexless marriage, recognizing there are trade-offs in all things.

Scott

In Top Tech Blog, here come the nano devices to play doctor inside your body.

And it raises my usual question: How many nano devices can a human have inside its organic frame and still remain a human? A few nano devices is no big deal. But if the nano technology evolves in time from simply fixing health problems to making your body work better in general, you might be gulping handfuls of nano robots for breakfast. You’ll be more nano device than human at some point, offloading the tasks of your internal organs and eventually even your mind to the tiny robots that are, collectively, you.

In time (decades) I would expect the nano robots to handle your body’s basic needs better than your natural organs, thus making your human parts unnecessary one organ at a time until we are mostly robot and a little bit of skin.

The robots don’t need to conquer us. We will evolve into them as soon as they do a better job than our natural organs.

The good reviews keep coming for this book.

How Model Helena Christensen Is Taking Danish Super Juice to the Next Level

helena christensen juices

Leading a healthy lifestyle has never been a fad for Helena Christensen—clean eating is embedded in the Danish native’s Nordic culture. But those spending today wandering around Copenhagen on the heels of the city’s fashion week may be surprised to learn that she has bottled her balanced approach: Five years ago, Christensen signed on as the creative director of Seimei, the company that produces Wish juices, and set to work developing a range of organic fruit–based blends with an eye on next-level purity. The result is a range of cold-pressed, sustainably made, non-GMO juices with a mission: Arriving in five flavors ranging from apple-strawberry to raspberry (Christensen’s favorite), “it’s like an drinking straight from an orchard,” she says of their authentic, uncontrived taste. And what’s not included—concentrated purees, colorants, xanthan gum, or synthetics—is as important as what is. There is no waste involved in their production (even the leftover pulp is baked into fruit chips) and ingredients like fresh black currants and gooseberries are locally sourced from farmers. With every bottle bought, a portion of the sale goes towards a charity of the customer’s choice. Think of it like the cherry, or rather, the organic cherry, on top.

Bridget Foley’s Diary: At Balenciaga, the Who’s Next Watch Begins

Designer departs from storied house. Hasn’t Kering been there and done that recently, when it replaced Gucci’s Frida Giannini with Alessandro Michele? Yet here we go again, with Alexander Wang leaving Balenciaga after what seems like a truncated stay, despite completion of his three-year contract.
Whatever the reasons behind the split, it’s safe to assume that if both sides had been delighted with the relationship, they’d have found a way to continue on despite Wang’s understandable interest in building his own brand and seeking the revenue with which to do so. (WWD reported this week that he’s close to signing a deal with General Atlantic, the growth equity firm headed by William Ford.)
Wang is now on to the rest of his life and career, an extremely talented and still-young designer. He got a bit of a raw deal from the moment the ink was dry on his Balenciaga contract, not from Kering but from the legions of onlookers who opined about the gravitas of the house codes and whether a guy with a youth-oriented, street-centric aesthetic could rise to the occasion. Suddenly, Wang wasn’t a gifted, savvy designer who’d launched his brand within a strata that made sense for his audience,

After Marriage Equality, What Will We Create Next?

After Obergefell v. Hodges, the first decision from the Supreme Court of the United States that broadly affirms the lives of lesbian and gay people and provides us with vital recognition for our intimate relationships, many national organizations and leaders quickly pivoted from marriage equality to workplace and public accommodation protections. The stark reality that a gay or lesbian person could marry in the morning, be fired in the afternoon and evicted from an apartment or restaurant in the evening, echoed across my screen as people shared these messages on social media.

I support federal legislation to protect LGBT people at work and in public, of course, and I recognize how crucial federal legislation is for people who do not live in states or cities that already provide these protections. At the same time, I want time to take a deep breath and savor marriage equality before moving to the next national issue.

The struggle to recognize loving, committed relationships of same-sex partners has been a long struggle. While Justice Scalia’s words in the Lawrence v. Texas dissent in 2003 portended this victory in 2015, gay men and lesbians have been talking about relationship recognition for decades. Before Genora Dancel and Ninia Baehr in Hawaii, there was Jack Baker and Michael McConnell in Minnesota; before them, there were discussions about marriage in The Ladder and One Magazine, and before that, there were other gay men and lesbians thinking about how their relationships could be recognized in the worlds where they lived. Lesbians and gay men have imagined the day when they could be fully, completely, and legally married for a long time–decades, even centuries. Savoring the decision honors the work and dreams of those who came before us.

Savoring the decision also gives us space and time to recognize the importance of imagination and creativity in our movements for social change. How do we create and promote communities that value imagination and creativity? How do we nurture the minds and spirits of people who help us imagine a different world and defy the conventions of the day to envision this new world and take steps to create it? How do we affirm the significance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender creative production? In particular, how do we carve out space for queer creativity amid increasing mainstreaming of LGBT people and identities? Thinking about and answering these questions is as urgent as workplace and public accommodation protections. Without imagination and creativity, our community cannot envision the changes we want to see. From our creativity, from our imagination, come the visions of the worlds we might create.

Imagination transforms worlds. Nurturing imagination and creativity is crucial. What can we do to nurture LGBTQ imaginations? How can we envision worlds where LGBTQ people can live and thrive? Considering these questions and answering these questions are an important part of our political worlds today. The imagination of a world transformed, the imagination of a world with marriage equality helped to create the world that we have today. How can we ensure that imagination and creativity are a part of the forefront of LGBTQ communities as we move forward?

Yes, attorneys and legal strategists were crucial to marriage equality. Yes, we need political strategies to win new federal, state, and local victories that make the daily lives of lesbians, gay men, bisexual, and transgender people better. We also need transformative imaginative capacities in our community. I want to hold space for creativity and imagination in our new world where organizations and individuals reorganize their priorities after marriage equality.

My greatest hope is that new resources will flow to organizations that build and celebrate LGBT culture in the aftermath of marriage equality. Tending to our culture, building on the rich and vibrant cultural tradition of LGBTQ communities, promoting queer creativity and imagination is for me an opportunity for LGBTQ people in this new world of marriage equality.

We’ve Laid the Foundation for Equality: Here’s What’s Next

The Supreme Court’s decision granting all Americans the freedom to marry instantly made me think fondly back to the day I wed, which was one of the happiest days of my life and incredibly meaningful to my daughter and our family. Now, young people like her — especially lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth — will grow up in a country where they can marry the person they love and where they are equal under the law — something so many of us never dreamed possible in our lifetimes.

As the Executive Director of Equality Federation, the strategic partner to the state-based equality movement, I am humbled by my role in the decades long struggle to push love to the forefront and win equality, one step at a time. But, we are not done.

The ruling solidified the foundation: now we have to build the house.

More heavy lifting is needed to achieve our vision of a world free of all forms of discrimination: a world without racism; a world without violence against transgender and gender nonconforming people; a world where everyone has the health care they need; and a world where all of us are able to live without the fear of being fired from our jobs or kicked out of our homes simply for being who we are.

As the LGBT movement charts its path forward, we should reflect on how we got here. The pathway to this historic victory felt long and arduous, but in the arc of history was quite short. We learned and adapted quickly as the public began to support our families.

Equality Federation was formed to partner with the state-based equality organizations. So much of the national progress we see today began with efforts at the local and state level. Examples abound. MassEquality became the first organization to lead an effort that resulted in a super-majority of state legislators supporting the freedom to marry. Equality Maryland made history when they led a successful campaign to win marriage equality at the ballot box. Equality California showed great courage in the Proposition 8 battle, and the many lessons learned from that valiant effort continue to inform our work.

State-based equality groups throughout the country worked tirelessly — amplifying the heartwarming stories of couples, lobbying legislatures and so much more — alongside the legal teams who fought marriage bans in the courts and brought down the Defense of Marriage Act. Our community owes enormous gratitude to all these organizations and, of course, the thousands of people who participated in the lawsuits, campaigns, lobbying, canvassing and storytelling.

We also honor all of the couples and families who simply lived their lives openly and authentically day in and day out, even when it was uncomfortable or dangerous. There are insights to be gleaned from the aunt who held signs at her local farmer’s market or the college student who collected signatures on campus.

In order to harness the momentum of this great win, it will be important to remember that equality is not achieved by relying solely on one person, organization or strategy. We found success by collaborating and sharing lessons learned in unprecedented ways, and that is what we must continue to do in order to ensure all Americans are protected from discrimination.

In the coming months, Equality Federation will continue working with our partners in the state-based equality movement — with even more vigor — to pass over 30 statewide nondiscrimination laws to include protections for LGBT people, and to struggle against racism, violence and injustice.

As during the early days of the marriage movement, many people are already doing their part. People have been sharing their stories of being fired from their jobs and kicked out of their homes simply for being who they are. Leaders in towns big and small are passing nondiscrimination ordinances. Now is not the time to rest — coming off of the marriage victory — we need to push forward so that no one is left behind.
