People Who Can’t Recognize Humor (literally)

One of the most mind-boggling discoveries I made while becoming a professional humorist is that a large segment of the general public has no sense of humor. I mean that literally, in the same way that some people can’t tell the difference between good wine and bad, and some people are tone deaf. Humor appreciation is like every other human capacity. Some have it, some don’t.

My best estimate is that about a third of the public don’t possess the capacity to even recognize humor when they see it. But they pretend they do, for social reasons, the same way I used to pretend I liked expensive wine. The reality is that I couldn’t distinguish an ordinary wine from a great one. Both gave me the same type of headache. (I no longer drink alcohol. I see it as poison.)

I don’t mean this post to sound judgy. We all have different skills and different capacities for enjoying different things. I appreciate humor but I don’t get any joy whatsoever from drinking wine, and I don’t have much appreciation for music either. So let us not feel superior for having one type of appreciation that others do not. None of us have the full stack.

In support of my hypothesis that one-third of the public do not even recognize humor when they see it, I give you this satirical video as Exhibit A. On Twitter, lots of folks believed this was serious. Including the part where she mentions Morse Code via blinking.

I made a similarly satirical video yesterday that generated a lot of hate-tweets from Trump supporters who didn’t realize I was joking. To be fair, my video ended with technical difficulties before I could clarify to the audience that I was presenting satire. That made it worse. But the people who are not humor-challenged knew it was a joke from the title alone. See if you can tell I was joking. My video is here.

You might enjoy reading my book because of all the ways you will appreciate it.

What People Wish They Knew About Divorce after Decades Together

When we plan our wedding, when we stand on the alter and say “I do,” and perhaps for many years after, we can’t imagine our life without our chosen partner. While some people only have a short time together before they divorce, there are the couples who have decades together before they decide that divorce is the only option.

This may be after numerous attempts at couple’s therapy, many years of a strained relationship, or even comes as a complete blindside to one of the partners. While this process may be exceptionally confusing and painful, there are some facts that many people wish they knew while going through the process and in the time after the divorce. These are the things that people wish they knew before, or while going through the process, that would have made the experience easier than it was. These tidbits would have made many realize that things were not as dire and permanent as they may have felt.

What are some of these things? You may not be able to live in the same place that you have lived for years, and you may need to adjust your standard of living. This may sound awful, but it does not have to be. When we think back at what we were able to live on, and the contentment we experienced with much less than we have now, we are able to realize that the adjustment may not be as bad as we imagine.

This is actually the opportunity for an exciting new start for you. Who wants to roam around that big house anyway? The kids are grown and have homes of their own, it is too much space, and far too much upkeep. Get a cute place, in a great area, that is simple to take care of. Did the two of you have a relationship where one spouse worked and one spouse helped raise the kids and take care of the house? Now is your time to shine and do all those things that you dreamed of doing. Volunteer, take some classes, work part-time, your options are endless and exhilarating.

Do you fear that you are going to spend the rest of your life alone, and never find love again? Think again! Unfortunately, at least 50 percent of marriages end in divorce. That leaves a lot of options and lonely people looking to meet a new match. While the idea of dating may be nerve wracking at first, it can be thrilling if you give it a chance. Are there great qualities about you that your partner always took for granted?

Perhaps there is someone out there looking for someone with those exact qualities. Maybe there is someone out there who treats you in a way that you never knew was possible. Of course you need to take the time to heal and be ready for a new romance or dating, but once you are, the possibilities are endless. This is your chance to date and do all those things you never got a chance to do in your previous relationship. Your ex hated to dance? Take some ballroom dancing lessons with your new potential suitor. Did your ex prefer to stay at home, now is your chance to see the world with a willing and excited partner.

The bottom line is that life does not end just because your relationship did. Things could not have been ideal if they ended in divorce, and there were likely numerous things that did not make you happy. While it may take some time, healing, and getting to know who you are as the individual you are now, this truly can be a fresh start and a reinvention of self.

You now have the chance to explore all the things you always wanted to do, but were not supported in doing. You have a chance to explore, learn, and put your unique mark on the world. When you are ready, you have a chance to meet someone who appreciates you for the unique person you are, and who has goals and interests in line with yours. Life is far from over, in fact some would argue it can just begin. Do not drop anchor, do not allow yourself to feel that things are hopeless when you divorce after decades, because there are many years and many adventures ahead if you are open to them.

David Beckham Is People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ For 2015

Move aside, Chris Hemsworth — People magazine has named David Beckham as the “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2015

Jimmy Kimmel made the announcement Tuesday night on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” revealing the cover and subsequently, interviewing the sexy cover star. The 40-year-old former soccer star is married to designer and Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. Together the couple have four children: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.

In his “acceptance” speech on the late night show, Beckham said the honor was “the best moment of his career” and thanked a few people for making it possible.

“I would obviously like to thank my parents for bringing me into this world,” he said. ”I would also like to thank my hairdresser, my stylist, photoshop…”

Though Beckham said he is honored to receive the accolade, he told People he had a few hesitations.

“I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person,” said Beckham in his People interview. ”I mean I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don’t ever think of myself that way.”

Beckham joins an elite group of men who have all claimed the “Sexiest Man Alive” title. Hemsworth claimed bragging rights in 2014, while Maroon 5 frontman and “The Voice” coach Adam Levine won it in 2013.

Make sure to pick up your copy of People’s “The Sexiest Man Alive” issue on newsstands this Friday.

People Want Answers From Diddy Over “Tupac” Allegations

I haven’t seen it, but a new documentary called “Murder Rap” has opened up some deep wounds. In the movie, they allege that Diddy had Tupac killed and Suge had Biggie murdered in retaliation. Now, we know Diddy has long maintained his innocence and the authorities have never come close to arresting the Bad Boy mogul. It seems like a lot of people saw this movie and immediately took it to Diddy on social media. Most people weren’t necessarily looking at him as guilty, but they certainly wanted him to address the allegations. I hope they are addressed too! This can’t be life! Below is the trailer I found online for the movie. FYI: Diddy addressed this movie when it was just a book, calling it “fiction.”

Kendrick Lamar Tells Fans How Fame Changed People During 6-Minute Speech [VIDEO]

If these walls could talk, they would say Kendrick Lamar is the sh*t and he’s putting it down for the purest form of Hip-Hop music.

During his latest pit stop in New York City for the Kunta’s Groove Sessions Tour, K. Dot decided to take a break from his virtuoso style of emceeing and give fans the skinny how

“Within six months of good kid, m.A.A.d city dropping, the life of what I knew or knew what I was or think I knew, that shit changed within six months,” the Grammy Award-winning rap star told the packed house of Webster Hall. “And you’re going through the vultures of the world telling you you’re great and you’re trying to make yourself believe that, but it’s hard because you’re institutionalized from where you come from.”

Released in October of 2012, Kendrick’s studio debut album went on to become a certified classic and the entry point he needed to be mentioned amongst music’s elite. His follow-up To Pimp a Butterfly has been subjected to extreme critiques on both sides of the spectrum, but the conversation has managed to keep the album alive when traditional means of promotion have since faded.

“I think this sh*t could live forever,” he continued. “I’m looking at y’alls faces. I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world and New York is one of them. Don’t mind me I could talk all day. To Pimp A Butterfly. God allowed this motherf*cking album to soar all the way to the top, with no motherf*cking commercial success. God allowed this to be top-tier without a radio single and sh*t.”

“I got some of the most loyal, dedicated fans in the world,” K. Dot said, thanking the audience for their support.

Why Are Trans People Left Out Of LGBT History So Often?

Despite their pivotal role in advancing the queer community, trans people are often written out of history, Lourdes Hunter, the national director at Trans Women of Color Collective, explained to HuffPost Live earlier this week. But why is there such a tendency to cut out some of our most crucial trans pioneers from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history?

In the video above, Hunters, LGBT Healthlink director Dr. Scout and National Center for Transgender Equality executive director Mara Keisling discuss why trans people are often ignored in historical retellings and the impact that has on the trans community.

The Theology of Spirit Day: As LGBTQ People, We Are All Loved By God

2015-10-15-1444919994-302499-purplelamp.jpg

Yesterday was Spirit Day. I looked at myself in the mirror as I tied my purple necktie daintily. It was the only piece of purple clothing I own. I remembered when I was in high school and used to conduct this same tie-tying ritual every morning, albeit more sloppily. I wore a purple tie back then too, but it was part of my uniform, not a personal statement.

Back when I was in high school, I was bullied and harassed for practically every aspect of my identity. I was, and still am, skinny, so I was referred to as a “stick”. My high voice, cracking with anxiety, was a constant source of amusement for my classmates. I dreaded having to answer a question or give presentations, because every sound I made resulted in laughter from everyone around me. As one of few Latinos in my school, I was called “illegal”, “wetback”, and told to “go back to Mexico”. What I remember most vividly, though, is how much pain I went through because of my sexual orientation.

I went to an all-boys, Catholic high school. Every day, every class even, began with prayer and we were ushered to Mass every month. Our principal reminded us daily that we were all family, all ‘brothers in Christ’. Yet, that fraternity seemed to only apply to certain people. I distinctly remember during class one day in my freshman year, someone asked my theology teacher about the Church’s position on gay people. Red in the face and practically shaking with anger, he questioned why those people were “even allowed to exist”. I sank into my seat and wanted desperately to disappear, because my very existence had just been deemed unworthy of God’s love.

When I was later outed in my junior year, things only got worse. I was once openly referred to as a faggot in the classroom while my teacher looked on, not bothering to say a word. I was called fag, fairy, homo– every name in the book. I was pushed into lockers. I had vile things written about me in the school bathrooms. I was once followed out the library and punched in the face because I dared to wear a rainbow wristband. I wanted to drop out.

I contemplated suicide a lot during this time. I am certain that if it weren’t for the small band of friends and supportive teachers that I had, I would not be sharing this story with you right now. I am thankful for their love and courage every day. It truly saved me during the darkest times of my life.

As I put my tie on yesterday morning, I remembered all of this pain, and I thought of all the LGBTQ youth out there that suffer in silence in their schools, just as I did. Many of them are still being taught, explicitly or otherwise, that their relationships are inferior or that their lifestyles are “sinful”. I think particularly of the trans* and GNC students that are constantly misgendered by their teachers or are policed every time they need to use the bathroom, changing room, and so on. My heart breaks every time I read another story of an LGBTQ teen who is thrown out from their home, or has to fight school administrators just to receive an education free from harassment, or worse, ends their life. I wish I could hug each one of them and tell them how beautiful and special they are.

For me, there is a theology of Spirit Day. It isn’t ‘turn the other cheek’ as my Christian neighbors say. For me, the spirituality of Spirit Day is resting in the truth that, as LGBTQ people, we are all loved by a Power higher than ourselves. Human beings may try to impose limits on that love but ultimately they fail–how can something infinite like the love of God have conditions? This love provides for us in every respect, protecting us and sheltering us at all times. Although this world is full of hatred and violence, we should, as Swami Vivekananda put it, “always say, ‘I have no fear’,” because God’s love is looking after us at every moment.

It is by remembering divine love that I feel empowered to continue fighting for LGBTQ youth everywhere. On Spirit Day, my prayer was that all of those kids know that God loves you–and I love you–just as you are. When you saw someone wearing purple, I hope you remembered that love.

Creator of Peeple, App That Lets You Rate Other People, Sets Record Straight About Product

Do you want to know what strangers, neighbors and friends really think of you? Or what if you could rate people you like or dislike for the rest of the world to see? A new app called Peeple, slated to launch later this year, will let you do just that. Originally designed to let others rate you in the areas of personal, professional and romance — similar to the way other apps rate businesses — Peeple is making headlines and causing controversy for what some say is its potential to lead to online harassment and bullying — or even ruin lives.

Peeple’s co-creator, Julia Cordray, says, in part, that the media has overreacted to what the app actually will do, and sits down to set the record straight on Dr. Phil.

“What is it that people misunderstand about this?” Dr. Phil asks.

“With the feedback, we’ve made some really great movements toward more positivity for our app,” Cordray says. “You are not anonymous on our app, you cannot have your profile started by anybody else. You have 100 percent opt-in ability. We really want to make sure that you have full control over what goes live on our app.”

Watch the video above as Dr. Phil asks Cordray how it could have never occurred to her or her investors that this app could ruin lives. “Seriously, you went to your VCs to raise money, and nobody around the conference table said, ‘What about cyberbullying?’” he asks.

“No, that was never anybody’s concern. So you have to imagine how surprised all of us were,” she replies. “We never would intend harm with a product or app. That’s just not who we are. I didn’t really anticipate this negative attention.”

Cordray’s entire interview airs on Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil.

IOWA CITY, IA—An alarming report published this week by researchers at the University of Iowa revealed that over 15,000 Americans vanish without a trace from “Fall Fest” hayride wagons every year. “Our data shows that, each autumn, between 1 and 2 percent of all Fall Fest attendees who climb up onto the back of straw-covered wagons and embark on tractor-pulled hayrides never return,” said the report’s lead author, Simon Shaw, noting that on the average hayride, at least two or three passengers will unexpectedly go missing and be lost forever. “Last year alone, we catalogued over 8,000 cases in which passengers disappeared from the wagon before they even reached the pumpkin patch, leaving behind nothing but empty hay bales where they once sat and overturned cups of steaming hot apple cider.” The report also discovered over 1,000 recorded instances of tractors emerging from cornfields without …

6 Traits Of People Who Could Be Sabotaging Your Life

Power begins with having a crystal-clear view of reality and what each and every person in your life is driven by. That will take a bit of a “wake-up” call, because we typically choose to be blind to such things as why people do what they do. For some reason, it just seems to be human nature to choose to take people at face value. Yes, that blindness is a choice. You might be wearing rose-colored glasses that are distorting your view of what’s really happening around you and to you.

So let’s “wake up” and get really clear and up-to-date about an element of society we don’t like to think about and wish didn’t exist. I’m talking about the people in your life who are negative and exploitive. They are obstacles to your success, happiness, security, and peace of mind. Once you “get” how they think, feel, and act, they become a puzzle that is easily solved.

There’s an old saying my football coaches used to tell us: “BS the fans, not the players!” I want you to become a player. I say “player” because so much of life is a competition. You may wish it wasn’t, but it is. It becomes pretty clear if you step back and evaluate it. You competed for your mate, your job, your social position, and your friends. You worked hard to create a family, make a home, and maybe build up a nice little “nest egg.” And now you have to fight to protect those things. It seems like we spend the first half of our lives trying to get ahead, creating some stability and building our success, and then we spend the second half just trying to keep people from taking it all away from us. And some of that fight is against people who aren’t like you. They will lie, cheat, steal, use and abuse. They will bully you, molest your children, steal your husband or wife, and take credit for your work. They will sabotage you at every turn. And by the way, they aren’t coming; they already here! They’re in your life and mine, maybe even in your own home or family.

10 Things All Winners Do

My spiritual upbringing taught me to pray for the misguided people in my life, and I always have and always will, and I hope you do the same for those I your life. But (and this is a big but) praying for them does not mean that we – you and I – shouldn’t also protect ourselves and those we love from them. In fact, it’s our duty to self-protect because, true to their reptilian, nature, these people, like snakes, will inject their venom into us (if not destroy us) without flinching. We must open our eyes to the “games” they play and boldly confront this very negative and unsavory part of our world.

So, how do we refer to these people who cheat, exploit, use, and abuse? I think of them as BAITERs (for people who are “Backstabbers/Abusers/Imposters/Takers/Exploiters/Reckless).”

We are talking about people who believe the “means are justified by the end.” They are totally self-focused and results-oriented, and they are willing to do anything, absolutely anything, to achieve their goal, whatever it may be – a job, a promotion, money, a wife or husband (maybe even yours), attention, an escape from accountability, or anything else they desire. For most people, of course, “anything” may mean only hard work, smart work, dedication, and commitment. But for BAITERs, it may mean taking a darker approach, where they don’t try just to win, but to win at your expense, or where they use you as a stepping-stone or steal your place in the game.

7 Steps To Make It Happen (Pretty Much Anything)

This is an unpleasant picture, I know, but a realistic one nonetheless. These people don’t see the world the way you do. They do not have your standards for relationships. They lack empathy – the “fellow feeling” that enables human beings to appreciate and identify with another person’s emotions. They lack conscience. They lack the ability to feel remorse, and they selfishly and narcissistically pursue whatever their own egos demand. They are, consciously and subconsciously, unscrupulous. They use dirty tricks and under-handed politics. They exploit, abuse, lie, cheat and manipulate. They do not hesitate to commit any nefarious act that will take them closer to their goal. They are committed to win and to win at any cost – and that “cost” is often paid by you.

And the truth is that sometimes, you actually help them hurt you. If you’re like a lot of folks in this world, you’re probably not sure about exactly what it is that you deserve. Am I really worthy of the promotion? Do I really deserve such a great mate? Can I measure up when the pressure is on? Those doubts and questions and a thousand like them can make you tentative in stepping up and boldly claiming what you want. You might even freeze or “choke” under pressure, even if just for a fleeting moment. But it is that tentativeness, that moment of hesitation or doubt that your competition, particularly the BAITER, seizes upon to get an edge against you.

Dr. Phil’s 10 Life Laws

To me, integrity means doing the right thing even if nobody is watching. But for the BAITERs – the exploiters and the abusers – the fact that nobody is watching merely means it’s easier for them to operate. They don’t even bother trying to find reasons or to rationalize their attitude and moves; they are driven by blind ambition and a cutthroat mentality that they access without a second thought, and you lose.

If someone is deliberately causing you pain or harm or putting you at risk or wantonly disregarding your well-being, that person is most certainly a BAITER.

Am I saying you have to become like “them” to win or even survive? No, of course not, but you do have to plug in, engage, and stop letting them abuse you and your trust while you wish that things were different. You do have to play smarter, harder, and better. That means changing what you are doing and how you are thinking.

Bernie Sanders Explains Why He’s Not Insulted When People Call Him A Socialist

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders explained on Friday why he’s not insulted when people call him a socialist.

Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, laughed when he was asked by “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert why he wouldn’t take the words “liberal” and “socialist” to be insults.

“I prefer the term, actually, to be a progressive and I’ll tell you why,” he said. Using Denmark as an example, Sanders said that social-democratic countries had better health care, child care and higher education systems than those in the United States.

“What you have is a society where government — as I believe it should in this country, radical idea though it may be — should actually represent working people and the middle class rather than large campaign donors,” Sanders said.

When asked what his vision for America would look like in “concrete terms,” Sanders spoke about what he saw as a “moral outrage” in the United States.

“In concrete terms, what it means is that it is a moral outrage that the top one-tenth of 1 percent today owns almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent,” he said. “That is the outrage and that has gotta change.”

That outrage at income inequality, Sanders said, is why he does not have a Super PAC, which would allow corporations, unions and other groups to give unlimited donations.

“I don’t have a Super PAC, I’m one of the few presidential candidates that does not, because frankly, I do not support the agenda of corporate America or the billionaire class. I don’t want their money,” he said.

Sanders has surged ahead of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire and Iowa, though polls this early in a presidential contest can be poor predictors of the eventual outcome. Asked why voters who think Clinton has a better shot of defeating a Republican should support him, Sanders made the case that he would match up better against a Republican in the general election.

“If you look at the polls of me running against Republicans, despite the fact that still in this country 20, 30, 40 percent of the people don’t know who I am or what I am fighting for, we do almost as well and in some cases better than Hillary Clinton does today, and that will only get better in the future,” he said.

Republicans win when the voter turnout is low,” Sanders continued. “I think the kinds of crowds and the excitement that we are generating with young people, with working people, will result in very large voter turnouts to get the White House, and not only get the White House, recapture the Senate and do well in the House.”

Sanders, who was first elected to Congress in 1990 and is its longest-serving independent, also rejected the suggestion that he was making a populist appeal similar to that of Republican front-runner Donald Trump.

“I think that what Trump is doing is appealing to the baser instincts among us, xenophobia and, frankly, racism,” he said. “I think that is disgraceful and not something we should be doing in this country in 2015.”

The Vermont senator, who at times has had a tense relationship with those in the Black Lives Matter movement, spoke about his vision for a more inclusive America.

“What I am talking about is a vision that goes beyond telling us that we have to hate a group of people,” he said. “What I am talking about is saying that in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, there are extraordinary things that we can do when people come together, black and white, and gay and straight, and demand that government start working for all of us and not just the few.”

Sanders, who has dismissed frivolous questions from reporters during his campaign, also played along with a lighter segment on the show where he stood in front of a camera and said whether he is for or against certain issues. Among those he weighed in on were rainy-day Mondays (he is against them) and kissing on the first date (he supports it sometimes).

Where New York’s Most Fashionable People Shop

by Jayna Maleri, Condé Nast Traveler

These are the vintage boutiques, bookstores, and shops where you’re most likely to spot the New York Fashion Week crowd.

New York Fashion week kicks off tomorrow, which means this (already chic) city is about to get an extra dose of style. Editors, photographers, designers, bloggers, and street style stars will be seen scurrying from one show to another as quickly as their (improbably high) heels will take them, but even in a packed week of fashion shows, presentations, dinners, parties, and industry events, there’s always time for a little shopping. We asked some of our favorite tastemakers where they shop when they’re in town for the shows, and these are a few of their can’t-miss spots.

1. THE LINE AND THE APARTMENT

If there’s one thing New York’s fashionable set can agree on, it’s that no visit to New York is complete without a stop at The Line and The Apartment on Greene Street in SoHo. Created by twins Kate and Morgan Wendelborn and stylist Vanessa Traina, stepping into the light-filled space is a great way to leave the city behind, if only for a few moments. “There is no better escape from the streets of New York Fashion Week than The Line and The Apartment,” says Traina. “You can put your feet up for a minute while shopping a beautifully curated selection of fashion and home and beauty goods. You will no doubt walk out with a new fashion week wardrobe of our classic and covetable pieces.” Style star (and Condé Nast Travelercontributing editor) Sofia Sanchez de Betak agrees: “It’s the most comfortable place to shop in the city,” she says “It just feels like you’re at home.”

2. DE VERA ANTIQUES

For vintage finds and exquisite antique jewelry, head to the well-curated De Vera Antiques on Crosby Street. “Every object is chosen with an impeccable eye, and you can expect to find ancient Roman glass next to Meiji period kokeishi dolls,” says brand consultant and curator Hikari Yokoyama. “The owner also makes jewelery from antique pieces like Georgian brooches, hand-cut diamonds, and Sardinian coral. Prices can be shocking,” she warns, “but it is still worth a visit. And don’t be shy–ask questions about the objects, you’ll leave with a mini history lesson.” You also might spot designer Isabel Marant, who calls De Vera “My very own cabinet de curiosités.”

3. FIVESTORY

Though much of the action during New York Fashion Week takes place downtown, Fivestory, Claire Distenfeld’s multi-floor shopping experience on the Upper East Side, is a guaranteed way to get the fashion-focused to venture above 14th Street. “New York has a wonderful culture of multi-brand stores where you can always discover new things,” says Hikari Yokoyama “Fivestory is one of my favorites.” It’s also tops fashion consultant and street style star Miroslava Duma’s list. “I love how elegant everything is in Fivestory and how Claire is taking chances with young, not-yet-established designers,” says Duma. “Everyone should try to take time during fashion week to pop in this very inspiring store.”

4. WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND

For anyone looking to hit the throwback jackpot, vintage store What Goes Around Comes Around on West Broadway has the potential for major payoff. The flagship store, which opened in 1993 (and has since spun off locations in Los Angeles, East Hampton, and Kuwait City) is the best place to go to find luxe secondhand goods, from labels like Chanel, Hermes, and Comme des Garcons. “Shopping here is like a treasure hunt,” says System Magazine co-founder Elizabeth von Guttman. And for those even more adventurous shoppers, here’s a tip, courtesy of Hikari Yokoyama: “You can make an appointment to visit their warehouse, and they’ll let you dig through the massive spread of Americana-focused treasures they have there.”

5. THE STRAND BOOKSTORE

A New York institution, which famously carries “18 miles of books,” Strand Book Store is a bibliophile’s paradise on Broadway that has been selling new, used, and rare books since 1927. It’s also an unlikely spot to recharge between shows. “I love to go there just to relax and look through old books,” says Sofia Sanchez de Betak. And model/stylist Tati Cotilar puts it even more succinctly when she says: “It’s the best bookstore downtown.”

Why Trump Insults People – Part of my Trump Persuasion Series

Today I will explain why Trump insults people. As usual, I will use the Master Wizard filter. That doesn’t mean this explanation is right. But compare it to the alternatives and see if the hypothesis fits the facts better. I remind you this is for fun, not insight.

If you don’t apply the Master Wizard hypothesis, you are probably confused why a grown man keeps insulting people in public. That seems like exactly the opposite of what Trump should be doing to appear presidential. What’s going on here? I mean, Trump seems reasonably smart, but according to 99.99% of the public, he is doing the same dumb thing over and over: insulting people.

Why?

Most of you probably assume he’s a big, dumb, racist, loose cannon, spouting off at his enemies, both real and imagined. Crazy!

Over at Reason.com, Nick Gillespie, writes that Trump’s insults are an example of “negging.” That’s what pick-up artists do. The idea is to tear down people’s egos and make them want to try hard to win your respect.

Frankly, I don’t understand the negging explanation. To me, it doesn’t make sense in the political context. But if I am being objective, I am also not the editor in chief of Reason.com, so the problem might be on my end.

Over at the Washington Post, Jennifer Rubin describes Trump’s actions in the context of bullying. But that doesn’t sound right to me because even his critics acknowledge that he is a counter-puncher. By my way of thinking, the person getting attacked first is not the bully.

The Master Wizard Hypothesis says Trump’s insults are not random, not negging, and not bullying. It is about math. I shall explain. But first, a story.

Back in my corporate days, I had a coworker who was famous for complaining loudly about the intelligence and competence of anyone who got in the way of her plans. She would talk about the low-performers to everyone who would listen, including that person’s boss, and the boss’s boss too.

On the other hand, if you did good work, she would often go to your boss and recommend that you get a raise or a promotion. And her opinion mattered because she was famous for hating dumb people. If she endorsed you as a capable employee, people took that seriously. She had credibility. (She also became the inspiration for my Alice character.)

Now let’s do the math.

If your baseline happiness is a 7 out of 10, and you get praised by someone important in your world, your happiness might go up to a 9, at least temporarily. That’s a two-point improvement.

But if someone insults your competence in front of your boss, that might take you down to a 5, which is a two-point decline. So the difference between a compliment and an insult (in front of your boss) is a full 4-point gap.

If Trump did not insult people, but sometimes praised them, he would be working with only a 2-point potential swing in how happy people can be when they please him. But if insults are a potential outcome – and Trump makes sure you know they are – you have a 4-point gap between pissing him off and pleasing him.

Trump is quick to point out that he only insults people who start it. (Although one assumes there are exceptions.) The result of Trump’s quick counter-attacks is to establish the 4-point gap between pleasing him and annoying him. No one wants a 4-point gap enemy.

Trump also has one weapon that no one else has: He is Trump. He has cultivated a persona for decades that allows him to be over-the-top without risk. So what works for Trump is not something you can use at home unless you have first established yourself as a tough-talking New Yorker. In that context, Trump’s insults sound almost normal.

If you are keeping score, this is one more situation in which the Master Wizard Hypothesis explains the data better than the alternatives. The Master Wizard hypothesis says Trump is a master of persuasion and sets up the 4-point gap intentionally. But are people really that calculated and that consistent with insults over a lifetime?

All I can tell you is that I am. Intentionally.

Ever wonder why I go hard at my haters online instead of ignoring them like a sane adult? Same reason. I want a 4-point gap to work with. The trade-off is that I look like a petulant child while responding to haters. I accept that trade-off in return for maintaining my 4-point gap.

Does it work? Actually, you are good judges on that question.

You have seen me eviscerate idiots in the comments on this blog. And you have seen me compliment people who make smart or funny observations. Do my compliments feel more powerful because you know the opposite could have happened?

To be clear, I distinguish between the insults that are usually counter-punches and the Linguistic Kill Shots that are engineered for strategic purposes. The latter have different purposes, according to the Master Wizard Hypothesis.

Scott

Bonus thought: After reading some of Bernie Sanders’ policy ideas that sound good on paper but don’t pencil out for the budget, I think the best kill shot for him would be “confused.” To be fair, every politician will be recommending impractical policy ideas, including Trump. But see how the word “confused” seems to fit Sanders more than it does any of the other candidates? That’s what makes it sticky. And you have never seen that word used in a political context, so it has no baggage of its own.

In Top Tech Blog, now you can “feel” a prosthetic limb. If that works, I might want to replace the ones I have and go full bionic.

Have I mentioned my book? It is full of words and sentences and whatnot. If you read it, I will love you. If you do not read it, you are a terrible person. (See what I did there?)

Update: This is my Google Analytics map showing people reading this blog an hour or so after posting today. Normally there would be traffic from all over the globe no matter the time of day. My blog traffic is up about five-fold since I started discussing the Master Wizard Hypothesis, but obviously this is not resonating overseas. I apologize to my non-U.S. readers for this Trump diversion and I hope you circle back when this silliness subsides. Not sure when he will stop entertaining us over here.

Do Transgender People Still Need To Take Hormones After Their Reassignment Surgery?

Model, actress, and designer Isis King may have been born biologically male, but ever since childhood she knew she was woman. Establishing a transgender identity does not come easy though, and at 23, Isis was homeless, living at a New York City LGBT shelter. After finding work as a background model for an America’s Next Top Model photo shoot, host Tyra Banks took an interest in her, and asked Isis be a part of the show’s next season. Within months, Isis was in the national spotlight as the first transgender contestant on Top Model, and she has used her platform to follow her dreams ever since – expanding her modeling and acting career, designing her own fashion line, and serving as an activist for transgender people everywhere.

Hormones and Testosterone?
Taking hormones was the first medical change Isis adopted in her transition from male to female. Does she still have to take them? “Yes!” she says emphatically. Even after genital reassignment surgery, Isis doesn’t naturally produce female hormones. Continuing to take the hormones helps with health issues in her new body – avoiding osteoporosis and the like. “It’s almost postmenopausal,” she says. One benefit of the reassignment surgery is that her hormones have a little less competition – she no longer produces testosterone.

Do Trans People Of Color Have A Harder Time Being Accepted?

Model, actress, and designer Isis King may have been born biologically male, but ever since childhood she knew she was woman. Establishing a transgender identity does not come easy though, and at 23, Isis was homeless, living at a New York City LGBT shelter. After finding work as a background model for an America’s Next Top Model photo shoot, host Tyra Banks took an interest in her, and asked Isis be a part of the show’s next season. Within months, Isis was in the national spotlight as the first transgender contestant on Top Model, and she has used her platform to follow her dreams ever since – attending college for fashion design, expanding her modeling and acting career, and serving as an activist for transgender people everywhere.

Struggling for acceptance

With all the recent attention on Caitlyn Jenner, the transgender community has been in the spotlight like never before. But there is still a long way to go when it comes to acceptance and visibility for those with a little less star power. “There have been 17 murders of trans people of color in 2015 alone,” says Isis, “and there are just not a lot of opportunities for trans women of color in general.” Trans women of color have “usually no privilege” says Isis, and often have had troubled upbringings. “When you’re ostracized, when you’re kicked out of the house when you’re young, it can be difficult to find opportunity,” says Isis. Some women resort to sex work, a “dangerous profession” that unfortunately is the only job many ostracized transgender women can get. Progress is still a process; Isis implores that we are “trying to create more opportunities to make the world easier and safer for transgender women”.

Ellen Page: Ted Cruz And Mike Huckabee Seem Like ‘Homophobic People’

Actress Ellen Page said that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz (R) and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) seemed homophobic and had failed to adequately address questions about their stances on LGBTQ issues.

Page confronted Cruz at the Iowa State Fair last month and asked him why he wouldn’t stand up against discrimination toward LGBTQ individuals. Cruz responded by telling Page that Americans shouldn’t be forced to do things that were against their religious beliefs. The Republican presidential hopeful also tried to pivot away from domestic LGBTQ issues and asked why the Obama administration wasn’t doing more to stand up for gay people killed in Iran or by ISIS.

Even though Cruz said that he was “happy to answer [her] question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate,” Page — who came out as gay last year —  said that the Texas senator’s answers weren’t satisfactory.

“I’ve seen multiple videos and read multiple quotes of Ted Cruz discussing gay issues, as well as Mike Huckabee, and it goes exactly as you’d expect. They don’t answer the question,” she told The Daily Beast in an interview published Saturday. “They say you’re cutting them off when you try to ask the same question again because they’re not answering it, because the reality is that they might be homophobic people. To me, it seems like they’re homophobic people.”

Page said that the GOP was ignoring public support in its own party for same-sex marriage. In May polls, a record high percentage of Americans expressed support for gay marriage, though that support did differ among party lines. While a majority of Democrats and independents supported same-sex marriage in a May Gallup poll, just 37 percent of Republicans in the Gallup poll were inclined to support it.

“We live in a culture where even the majority of young Republicans are in favor of same-sex marriage — and I mean Republican constituents, not the people running for president,” Page said. “I don’t know what to say other than it went exactly as expected. It just goes to ISIS and Iran and who knows where.”

Miss America Kira Kazantsev: ‘It’s Not As Glamorous As People Think’

A new Miss America will be crowned on Sunday, which means audiences can look forward to seeing some stunning ballgowns, fun celebrity judges and a whole host of various talents.

But before the 2016 winner takes her crown, The Huffington Post sat down with Kira Kazantsev, the current Miss America, to get a behind-the-scenes look at what life is really like as the country’s most beloved beauty queen.

Kazantsev dished on what it’s like to travel 20,000 miles every month for a year, and how she juggles so many appearances while keeping things real, fun and stylish. And yes, we did ask about a “Miss Congeniality” reference that Kazantsev totally confirmed. Scroll down to read excerpts from the conversation, which have been condensed and edited for clarity.

HuffPost: What is a typical day like for you:

Kira Kazantsev: I travel 20,000 miles a month and I’m in a different city every two days. Usually I wake up, depending on the call time, about two hours before. I do my own hair, I do my own makeup. You know, it could be event one of five that day and I have to maintain [my look]. It’s a lot — it’s not as glamorous as people think.

HP: Who provides your clothing?

KK: My clothes are provided to me by Joseph Ribkoff which is really nice. They travel very well. But other than that I’m on my own.

HP: For the Miss America pageant, do they give you a glam squad?

KK: Pretty much the girls do their own hair and makeup, but they do have people there to help you, touch you up, whatever it might be. They won’t leave you high and dry — there will be somebody to help you out!

HP: Do the girls help each other backstage at all?

KK: Yeah! Absolutely. There’s so much going on — it’s 52 people squeezed into a pretty tight space. So there’s constant [chatter, such as], “Is your curling iron on, can I use that for a second? I can’t find my hairspray, can I borrow yours?”

HP: Do you really use butt spray?

KK: We do use butt glue! It does help for piece of mind. Nobody wants to see that when you’re walking across the stage. Just cement that down and you’ll be good to go!

HP: Who makes your dresses for pageants?

KK: My mom and a seamstress made my competition wardrobe both years for Miss New York. We went to Mood, got fabric for like 40 bucks, got rhinestones on eBay, and they concocted this thing, this amazing dress that I ended up winning Miss New York in.

I’ve always prided myself on being very frugal about it and showing that you don’t have to spend thousands and thousands of dollars. I’ve never spent more than $ 500 on a dress.

HP: How do you travel with your crown?

KK: My carry-on always has my crown, because if the luggage gets lost than you’re kind of SOL.

I also always have my makeup and an outfit, so for whatever reason if I get stranded and my luggage doesn’t make it, I have the essentials — my “Miss America kit.”

HP: What’s the most surprising item people might find in your closet?

KK: I don’t have a closet! That’s the thing I’m looking forward to most [when the year is over]. Just having hangers!

You can catch Kazantsev handoff her crown at the 2016 Miss America competition on Sunday, September 13 at 9 pm on ABC.

And as a bonus, check out Kazantsev performing “Cups” at HuffPost’s office. Kazantsev performed a similar red cup routine for her talent last year, when she won her title.

Shadow People

Matthew Arnold

Genre: Horror

Price: $ 7.99

Release Date: March 19, 2013

Back in the 1970s, several patients in an experimental sleep study reported seeing shadowy intruders. These patients – and hundreds of others – died in their sleep soon after. Doctors called the phenomenon "Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome" and refused to discuss the shadows. Now, a struggling late-night radio host (Dallas Roberts of THE GREY and TV's THE WALKING DEAD) and a skeptical CDC investigator (Alison Eastwood of MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL) have begun researching a disturbing new outbreak of shadow sightings and sleep fatalities. Could this be a case of paranoid hallucination, or are these victims literally being scared to death by actual nightmare creatures? Anne Dudek (TV's COVERT AFFAIRS, TV's HOUSE M.D.) and Mariah Bonner (THE SOCIAL NETWORK) co-star in this supernatural thriller based on true events.

Who is Smarter – the Smart People or the Dumb People? – Part of My Trump Persuasion Series

Today I will create cognitive dissonance in about 25% of my readers, assuming past patterns hold. Please do not read further if you don’t like those odds.

While the title of today’s post sounds like nonsense, that question is one of the biggest debates in the country now because of Donald Trump. The wording is different everywhere, but the idea is the same: Smart people believe smart people are smart. Dumb people believe dumb people are the real smart ones.

They can’t both be right. I’ll help you sort it out.

On one side we have the self-described smart people. These folks will tell you that a rational person can learn about political issues, with a little effort, and thus make a meaningful contribution to the democratic process. All one must do is be open to all points of view and do some independent research to fact-check the professional media. You don’t need to be an expert because most issues boil down to a few key factors, and you can understand those few things.

That sounds smart to you, right?

The dumb people – who have been labelled such by the smart people – are the ones who vote for whoever says what the dumb people want to hear, or whoever makes them feel good. This group is more about emotion than reason.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. I am ashamed to be in the same country with people who refuse to use their brains. DUUUUMB!

You agree, right?

Good, because that’s the set-up for the cognitive dissonance. You just hardened your sense of identity as a smart, rational person who believes an informed citizen can make a meaningful contribution to the system.

Now let’s talk about investing. Same conversation, but changing from politics to finance. Which of these two people seems smarter to you?

1. A stock investor who does his own research so he can find great values,

or…

2. An investor who buys a stock index fund and settles for an average return.

I am sad to say some of you will pick the first one. But it is a myth that individuals can sort through the lies and misinformation that companies produce as source data and convert all of that into good decisions. Every study on the topic tells us that individual investors are deluded idiots. And people who invest in managed mutual funds are only slightly better. (Okay, maybe worse.)

In the investment world, the person who understands that the available information is not credible is the smart one. That person plays the odds correctly and invests in an indexed mutual fund with low fees. Every study says that is the smart play.

Most of my readers already know that what I just said about investing is true. And unlike most topics, this one really does not have well-informed critics. All informed people hold the same view: Individuals should not do their own research and buy stocks based on that research.

But you still think smart people can research political policy options and come to reasonable and useful conclusions… even though you observe that half of the population disagrees with the other half no matter how much research anyone does.

Cognitive dissonance should be hitting some of you hard right now. If you feel unusually angry and determined to reply, that’s a tell. Or a false-positive. One can never be 100% sure.

The popular media is staffed mostly by writers and art majors and other people who tend to believe in magic. It is no surprise that they don’t see how absurd it is to expect citizens to have useful opinions based on the misinformation that that same media provides around the clock.

Seasoned investors, on the other hand, have learned to be more humble. They know there is no amount of research that can convert unreliable data into reliable decisions. My guess is that this group of professionals support Donald Trump in large numbers because they are smart enough to know the limits of their own reason when applied to inaccurate baseline assumptions and sketchy data.

My point is that if you find yourself mocking Trump supporters (or Republicans in general) because they have some distance from the issues, you are probably the dumb one in that conversation no matter how your education and IQ compares with your intended targets.

And if you believe you can make intelligent decisions on politics based on inaccurate information and lies, why aren’t you already rich from doing the same thing with stocks?

I’m a big fan of voting (when other people do it, not me) because it gives people a sense of ownership in the process. So please vote. But don’t confuse that with being psychic.

Top Tech Blog: Graphene seems like it will change everything. How do I invest in that stuff? (Answer: Index fund)

My book on systems versus goals will probably get more attention when people realize Trump is a systems thinker. He follows the odds without always having one specific goal in mind. Recently Trump made his brand so powerful that a lot of folks thought he should be their leader, just because, well, Trump. Under the “goal” view of the world, Trump failed three times to become president, so you assume he will fail again. But the “systems” view says Trump failed toward better odds each time, largely on purpose. And here we are.

News: Nation’s Marketers Only People Still Trying To Reach Inner-City Child

KANSAS CITY, MO—With their continued investment in projects aimed at reaching out to the 14-year-old inner-city resident, the nation’s marketers are the last group of people in the country still trying to get through to local child Derek Crawford, sources confirmed Wednesday.

As they strive to understand the concerns of the boy and have an influence on the decisions he makes as he grows older, marketing professionals across the U.S. have reportedly demonstrated more interest in Crawford than any teacher, social worker, policymaker, nonprofit organization, or government agency has during his entire life.

“It is imperative that we put ourselves in this kid’s shoes and get a real sense of what his life is like,” said Peter Bennett, chief strategist at Brooks, Bennett, & Mills, a New York firm that has helped market Samsung mobile phones, Monster Energy drinks, and numerous video game consoles, as he …

24 Questions Black People Need White People To Answer, Like Right Now

“Do y’all really think Miley is the one who created twerking? Really?”

This is just one of “24 Questions Black People Have For White People,” according to a new video released by Buzzfeed.

Five black people pose questions that open dialogue around white privilege, appropriation and more. Some other necessary questions they ask are: “Why is it that white crime is seen as an isolated incident but black crime is a representation of my entire community,” or “Why do you want to say the N-word so badly” and ”Why is it that white people always act as though they’ve discovered a new trend when people of color have been doing it for virtually years?”

White people often appropriate black culture without giving us credit — from slang words we created to the hairstyles we rock – and we want to know why!

See the rest of the questions in the video above.

Trans People Confront Myths They Hear About Themselves Head On

Transgender identity can be hard to understand. In a way, it’s supposed to be since “trans” means so many different things to different people.

In “I’m Trans, But I’m Not…” a group of transgender people confront myths about what it’s like to be transgender head on in order to dispel mainstream misconceptions about their lives. From “I’m trans but I’m not damaged” to “I’m trans but I’m not tricking men into having sex with me — I don’t need to,” their statements are honest, poignant and reveal quite a bit about the daily lives of the transgender community.

One powerful point that everyone should keep in mind?

“I’m trans, and I’m worthy of love.”

What Old People Know About Sex That You Don’t

I’d like to share a revelation with you. It took me months of pondering my interview data from hundreds of long-married elders, but I finally got it. It’s about sex and older people — not something younger folks think about a lot. However, when I have given talks to 20- and 30-somethings about my book of advice from people married a half-century or more, I know there is one question in the back of their minds, even if they don’t come out and say it:

How can sex possibly stay interesting for a lifetime?

I have good news for you. I’m going to allay your worst fears and help you to relax about the idea of sex in the later years of marriage. I will tell you the spoiler right now. The message from our elders is: don’t waste your time worrying about sex in later life, because it’s pretty good. But first, here’s the revelation. Ready?

The reason you are worried about this issue is because sex between people a lot older than you always seems kind of gross. I don’t know if this characteristic is bred into us through evolution, if it is the product of ageist stereotypes, or what. But if you think about it, we have a lot of trouble imagining people a lot older than we are having sex. I will now prove this fact to you.

Imagine yourself at age 8. You get out of bed and sneak downstairs to get a snack. Your 18-year-old babysitter and her boyfriend (where did he come from?) are engrossed in making out on the couch. And what did you say to yourself?

Yuck.

The 18-year-old babysitter goes home that evening a little earlier than expected, and her 50-year-old parents are making out on the couch. What does she say to herself?

Yuck.

And that weekend, the 50-year-olds watch a movie that involves two 80-year-olds making out on the couch. What does that couple say?

Yes, you guessed it: Yuck.

The problem I discovered with younger people thinking about sex in later life is that they envision themselves now, at their age, somehow with an 80-year-old. But the revelation is this: It’s just fine when you have grown old together. You’ve learned what your partner is like (and likes), you are comfortable with one another — and you’re older, too. The beauty of staying married for a long time is that you enjoy each other and giving each other pleasure is fun. And there is absolutely nothing yucky about it.

Alfredo, age 77, captured this phenomenon succinctly. He pointed out that when you are aging together, a lot of things just seem pretty much the same:

Somehow as you get older you kind of get blind to the infirmities that affect the other party. And you always see them the way they were. You don’t see aging. It’s a wonderful thing. I don’t know if the brain is wired for that, but that’s the way it is. You just need to have a spark to begin with. And whatever it is you’re doing, just keep doing it. We’re in our mid-70s, and we still have a fine sexual relationship, it’s wonderful. You make do with what you’ve got, basically.

And the elders assure you that you are likely to feel the same way.

I have some credibility on this issue, because I don’t know anyone who over the past few years has talked to as many very old people about sex as I have. At first it was awkward, but after the first two or three elders eagerly embraced the topic, I was no longer embarrassed. It’s something they have thought about a lot and still think about. And indeed, they have some lessons for you about it.

First, let’s be clear: many elders continue to have sex, and most believe that it is important to keep up a sexual relationship. Although younger people often hold a negative image of the “sexless older years,” research shows that in marriages (or long-term committed relationships), rates of sexual activity are actually quite high. Indeed, for married people whose health does not interfere with intimacy, the vast majority of people age 65 and over are sexually active.

And that’s what the elders will tell you. Diane, age 74, speaks for many of the elders:

I think sex is very important because it’s kind of the glue that keeps the spark alive in a marriage. The one special expression that a married couple has is through sex–sexual intercourse–through keeping your bond just very close and very tight. It’s that expression that makes your spouse know that they’re loved and well cared for and you put all the other things with it.

To be sure, there are elders — just as there are people at any age — who are sexually incompatible or for whom their sex life is contentious or unfulfilling. In some cases, physical illness leads to lack of sexual interest or ability, causing distress for one or both partners (and again, such maladies can occur at any age). But the majority of the elders in long marriages found that sexuality can remain interesting and fulfilling into the ninth and tenth decades of life. Indeed, they believe that young people are just plain mistaken when they worry about “the sexless older years.”

As Rachel, age 86, told me:

If you’re really physically and sexually attracted to somebody and your head is working right, then you should be able to feel that all the way until the end of your life. And what fun that is! I don’t know whether young people hear that kind of thing. They think, you know, when you get to have gray hair that the sex just removes itself from your life, but that’s not true. Not at all.

So for many, sexual activity doesn’t stop. But there’s even better news: As you grow older, the idea of “sex” expands. It grows to include — and even to emphasize — a much wider range of loving and romantic behaviors. Over and over, the elders used the term intimacy, which they believe goes beyond sexual intercourse itself. Many described the deep joy of emotional and physical intimacy with a partner of many years, adding that having sex itself was additional spice in the stew — or a tasty side dish, as Gertrude, age 73, says:

How important is sex? Well when I was young, I thought it was 90 percent! But at 71, it’s a very lovely side dish. And I do think it’s important — yes, I do. At our age, it’s not as much the hot romance kind of thing as it is for young people. But there’s a certain wonderful friendship that exists if you have the basic foundation for it; if you’ve made that, you’ve got each other. And it’s quite nice! Of course this is a woman’s viewpoint, but the comfort of touch: a hug, a kiss . . . those are things that mean I love you.

Or as Beverly, age 70, put it: “The great thing at our age is that sex is not about procreation; this is purely about recreation!”

I was surprised to hear many of the elders describe intimacy in old age as satisfying as (or even better than) when they were younger. They tried to convey — sometimes with difficulty — the sublime pleasure of physical intimacy with a partner of 50 or more years. Mason, age 77, described his feelings, based on his 40-year marriage, in a way I found deeply moving:

I think what happens is the spark changes. You know, initially there’s a lot of physical attraction and that continues. But it changes over time so that the romance or whatever you want to call it becomes actually much more profound. It’s less, what’s the word — frenetic maybe. For me anyway it’s really wonderful just to be able to sit together reading or watching TV, and I’ll just hold her hand or touch her arm or whatever. There’s a kind of a quietness there that’s quite deep. It’s very fulfilling. You feel a peaceful intimacy that’s in a way really more meaningful than the frenetic thing.

So here’s the lesson to carry with you, whether you are a 25-year-old pondering marriage or a 60-year-old wondering about the future. According to the elders, the sexual side of things — barring a troubled history or serious physical problems — is going to be at least good enough to keep you happy, and may be much better than that. There are lots of things to worry about in life. But fretting about sexless later years isn’t one of them.

Chic Summer Pants for People Who Hate Shorts

jane birkin

This summer, I’ve found myself in a leg-baring debacle: While my friends are in an arms race to see how much flesh they can show in the face of a heatwave and still remain technically clothed, I have never hid the fact that I seriously dislike shorts. The past two months, I’ve gone to literal great lengths to cover up and ditch the Daisy Dukes. I have found myself everywhere from sitting—and sweating—in the sand at Coney Island in black, high-waisted jeans to panting through a dehydrated day at Central Park in low-slung, heavy boyfriend jeans.

But thankfully, there is an elevated solution—one that didn’t involve an unclad gam or sweaty brow—for those who are keen to keep their limbs under wraps: the summer pant. The fresh staple has all the sense of ease that comes with summer while still retaining an overall sense of polish. “People often equate summer pants with baggy, drawstring trousers  that you wear on the boardwalk,” says Market Editor Kelly Connor, “but there are plenty of options that don’t scream ‘disheveled tourist.’ Opt for a sleek or wide-leg silhouette—and more importantly, aim for airy fabrics.”

Plus, unlike shorts, the summer pant can translate from day to night or from work to play, and is just as cool in the mid-day sun as out to drinks, long after it sets. If you’re heading out from the office to drinks, try a skinny black pleated pair with a white shirt. Venturing out from a mid-day walk to dinner? Throw on a casual-cool chambray pair with a black tank. The easy, breezy summer pant gives a covered—and comfortable—leg up to any hot weather wardrobe: here, the eight best pairs.

7 Reasons People Lie

Melisa claims her husband Chris — from whom she’s separated while she’s pregnant with their second child — is a pathological liar. Watch their story here. When she turns to Dr. Phil for help, he offers reasons why Chris, who admits he’s had a problem with lying since his youth, might do what he does. The reasons people lie include:

  • To take what is not rightfully theirs

  • To escape accountability

  • To create a fantasy/false self-esteem to escape their mundane life

  • To avoid punishment

  • To inflict pain

  • To feel better in the moment; to “steal” admiration

  • To gain advantage to exploit others

Caitlyn Jenner Takes ESPYs By Storm: ‘Trans People Deserve Something Vital. They Deserve Your Respect’

In her first public appearance since announcing her decision to transition, Caitlyn Jenner mesmerized the crowd at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Wednesday as she accepted the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards.

Jenner spoke about her own personal experience so far as a transgender woman. But she also dedicated a significant percentage of her speech to a thoughtful and touching discussion of the vast number of issues facing the larger transgender community.

“Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect,” she said. “And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”

“At this very moment there are young people coming to terms with being transgender,” she added at another moment, noting the high levels of bullying, homicide and suicide the transgender community must grapple with still today.  The trans community, she said, needs the American community’s empathy and understanding.

Jenner admitted she had never talked with another transgender person up until very recently, in what she said was a truly educational experience. “It’s been eye-opening inspiring but also frightening,” she said of her overall experience since she told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in April that she would be transitioning from male to female.

In a video about her experience preceding the speech, Jenner discussed about what she has learned about trans-related issues since then and how she decided over time she would become not just a trans woman, but a trans advocate.

I came to kind of a revelation that out of all the things I have done in my life, that maybe this is my calling,” she said. “To take my struggle, throw it out in front of the world, maybe I can bring understanding on this subject. It’s time that I do my best. This is an issue we can deal with. This is not something people have to die over.”

Maura Mandt, the ESPYs co-executive producer, told Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch in the lead up to the show that Jenner’s decision to transition in such a public forum “displayed enormous courage and self-acceptance.”

“Bruce Jenner could have easily gone off into the sunset as this American hero and never have dealt with this publicly. Doing so took enormous courage,” Mandt told Deitsch. “He was one of the greatest athletes of our time. That is what the Arthur Ashe Courage Award is about, somebody from the athletic community who has done something that transcends sport.”

Jenner became a household name in 1976 when she won the men’s decathlon at the 1976 Summer Olympics. But after ESPN announced the selection of Jenner in June, the network faced large amounts of backlash from those who believed there were more deserving candidates. Bob Costas called the decision “a crass exploitation play” and criticism became so loud that ESPN issued a follow-up statement several days after the initial announcement:

The Arthur Ashe Courage Award is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action. Sometimes that courage is demonstrated over the course of a lifetime and sometimes it is demonstrated in a single act that shines a light on an important contemporary issue. At all times, there are many worthy candidates. This year, we are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way to help move forward a constructive dialogue about progress and acceptance.

The award is given to those “possessing strength in the face of adversity, courage in the face of peril and the willingness to stand up for their beliefs no matter what the cost.”

ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne summed up the feelings of many on Wednesday:

BuzzFeed took to the streets to ask average Americans their opinion of the candidates and if they could actually remember the names of so many pasty dudes.

A Thank You Note to Straight People

2015-07-08-1436323587-6594168-dadpride3.jpg

A recent article in the Washington Post repeatedly downplays the significance of 26 million Facebook users changing their profile photos to the colors of the rainbow flag. While I agree that this “slacktivist” gesture alone isn’t as meaningful as how individuals live their daily lives, the author’s logic is flawed. He accuses the non-LGBT rainbow-bearers of co-opting the symbol of the movement.

“Throughout history, the powerful have taken credit for social progress they did not participate in,” the author argues.

By this reasoning, only those who are gay, lesbian, bi or trans can wave the rainbow flag. Taking this a step further, only those who’ve fought in wars are allowed to wave the American flag.

I understand where the author is coming from. My coming out process was long, painful and deeply personal. Yet seeing the sea of rainbow-colored profile photos is — if nothing else — a sign that times have truly changed.

The victory of same-sex marriage can (and should) be shared by the entire country. The fight was rooted in equality, so how can we begrudge anyone the right to celebrate right alongside us? This doesn’t threaten or belittle my story; it only serves to strengthen and amplify it.

The day before the Post article was published, I wrote on my personal blog, thanking my straight allies for changing their profile photos — and for so much more. The truth is, the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage couldn’t have happened without straight people — and not just the five justices that voted in favor of it.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Dear Straight People,

Thank you. Thank you for cheering right alongside us as we in the LGBT community celebrate a new-found, long-overdue measure of equality. Thank you for the endless sea of rainbow-colored photos. Thank you for voting. Thank you for teaching your children (and sometimes your parents) that not every family is the same, yet deserving of the same respect. Thank you for telling them that whether they grow up to love the opposite gender or their own, you will still love them. Thank you for encouraging them to be whoever they were meant to be. Thank you for trying to understand and to learn. Thank you for asking questions, even if you don’t always have the right words. Thank you for being fair and equal in your schools, your jobs, your churches, and your neighborhoods. Thank you for defending us in a fight, even when we’re not around. Especially when we’re not around.

To friends, families, classmates and coworkers: thank you for allowing us the time and space to come out — to know ourselves and to be seen, heard and known on our own terms. We realize this is a journey for you, too; we will do our best to remember that.

On a more personal note, I count myself lucky that the majority of my family has stuck around since I came out 20 years ago. I love that they love my husband and my son, and their presence in our lives means the world to me.

I also want to voice my thanks to a specific group of straight people — the fathers I’ve met since becoming a dad myself. Some of you I’ve met in real life; countless others I know only virtually. To varying degrees you’ve been sounding board and shit-caller, muse and motivator, confidante and comrade. You’ve made me laugh, cry, think, and scream — sometimes all at once. Thank you for being my friends, my brothers, my family.

More importantly, thank you for doing all you do as you raise your families — living your lives as fair-minded men. Among you are those with LGBT fathers and mothers, aunts and uncles, in-laws, siblings, children. Some of you live and work alongside many who are LGBT. For some, I was the first gay person you ever interacted with.

Regardless of your experience, that is how the world changes — people choosing to love and accept those in their everyday lives that have known hatred, rejection and judgment elsewhere. This is how humanity grows, strengthens, and moves on from a history of bigotry and fear. So thank you for being the parents, children, friends that you are — and in turn, changing the world.

With much love & gratitude,
Brent

What Evan Wolfson and Marriage Equality Have Done for the People Who Despise Them

At a moment when Marriage Equality has become national law, albeit by the slimmest of margins, (and, thank you Justice Kennedy), LGBTQI folk and our allies would be moronic not to realize how harrowing is this decision for millions who don’t share our belief in what is now deemed to be a Constitutionally guaranteed right. Revolted by their visualizations of what same-sex unions mean, and haunted by unreal notions, including that we will soon agitate for the freedom to marry dogs, they spin their wheels in an effort to comprehend what has happened to a country they thought they understood as one explicitly defined by the Bible.

In fact, what “the father of marriage equality” Evan Wolfson and his colleague, Mark Solomon, (among others who worked at Freedom to Marry) have done is to make the nation stronger. Though our adversaries don’t yet realize it, this transformation of consciousness will be perceived much in the same light as the 1919 law granting women the right to vote. Or the momentous Civil Rights — and Voting Rights — legislation which LBJ passed, thereby enfranchising African Americans. Both advances were epochal; both had been met with stout resistance; in both cases, the losing side bewailed the future of the United States, as previously received.

As previously received….

Therein lies their fallacy and the same blunder which opponents of Marriage Equality make today. For in these movements towards “a more perfect union” postulated by the Constitution, the Republic and its people make actual progress. In the process, of course, old givens are recycled; that which was known — a received wisdom, oftentimes never questioned — are subjected to new inquiry. It is the never-ending quality of regeneration at the heart of the American Experiment: our willingness to start over, to cast aside the unworthy or the unworkable and put our shoulders to the wheel in the service of a finer and more compassionate Whole. And this is the very essence of healthy democracy.

One side doesn’t necessarily have to degrade or shame the other for being tardy. As Lao Tze wrote 2500 years ago, “If one leads, another must follow.” It is the law of Nature; it’s also human nature — to grow and stretch, expand and put aside the archaic in favor of what meets the reality of the Present.

This is where we are as a People: in the Present.

The gift which Evan Wolfson, Mark Solomon and their colleagues at Freedom to Marry bestowed upon the nation is to help harness a huge and still-expanding recognition of humanness. And human diversity. In its way, it is as stunning an achievement as the Emancipation Proclamation or the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. the Board of Education. As a civil people, we have the right to expect leaders to lead; legislators to legislate; and courts to rule. This is the usually difficult, oftentimes infuriating, way in which our system plays out. That some will bridle is to be expected. But, in due course, they certainly will come to appreciate that what makes us truly strong isn’t our weaponry. Our power — true power — lies in our character. Some may call it virtue. I do. But in leading us to this wider embrace of our own citizens, irrespective of superficial differences, the patriots who ushered this issue forward brought us into the moment, reminded us of whom, and what, we are and renewed our collective sense of Self.

They are heroes.

10 Reasons Why Young People Should Stop Freaking Out Over The Thought Of Old People Having Sex

2015-06-24-1435121401-8903473-EricaJagger515570.jpg

Last week I read Ann Brenoff’s HuffPost article, “Why The Thought Of Old People Having Sex Makes Young People Squirm.” She wrote a line that deftly captures the heart of youthful bias: “younger people just believe sex isn’t something older people are supposed to have.”

My reaction, when I read the piece, was anger: who are these young people to tell me I’m too old for sex? Why do we need to be reminded of the propaganda that great sex has an expiration date, and if yours is up, well, settle down for the next few decades on the sexual sidelines?

I thought of this article when my boyfriend Sam and I were dining al fresco at a local restaurant last weekend. At 48 and 52 respectively, we’re two lust-driven middle-aged people who like to have sex and talk about sex as much as possible. Sam, in fact, was talking enthusiastically about a particular sex act when the waiter arrived with our artichoke dip. I glanced around the patio at diners who looked to be in their 20s and wondered a) if they could hear him and b) what they thought about us if they could?

Were they surprised that we “still” have sex at our advanced ages? Were they disapproving? Grossed out? I started to wonder why young people think they have the patent on sex when old people have been doing it a lot longer.

It’s youthful ignorance, of course. You don’t understand what you don’t know. And what I would like all those to the left of 30 to know is this:

2015-06-24-1435121613-5961842-EricaJagger515751.jpg

1. You will get older too. Yes, really. You will get gray hair and skin creases and you will still want to have sex. And you will not care at all what young people think.

2. Older people do it just like you, only better. Penises still enter vaginas. Tongues still lick genitals. Just with a lot more finesse than yours.

3. You don’t have to worry about pregnancy. Worrying about getting pregnant, or not getting pregnant, takes up a lot of space in your head. When baby-making is no longer a concern, you can enjoy sex in its purest form.

4. Sex isn’t tied up with rings and babies. Pregnancy isn’t the only issue that can make sex feel less sexy. The pressure to create an adult life, complete with the house and the kids and the holiday cards, can sap psychological energy and sex drives. One reason people often experience greater sexual enjoyment in middle age is that the exhausting tasks of young adulthood are behind them.

2015-06-24-1435121805-8410377-EricaJagger515775.jpg

5. Older people don’t necessarily want to think about you having sex either. Some older people get creeped out watching frolicking porn stars young enough to be their children. Some older women would prefer not to read about yet another multi-orgasmic, dim-witted virgin. You may cringe at the image of your parents getting it on, but believe me, they don’t really want to think about you getting it on either.

6. The same body parts yield pleasure. Loose skin, lack of lubrication and erections that need coaxing don’t signify lack of desire or gratification. And because you are no longer taking the express train to Orgasmville, you will experience sex with greater nuance and meaning.

2015-06-24-1435121884-7151302-EricaJagger515738.jpg

7. Staying sexually active keeps you feeling vital. Some people welcome midlife and beyond as a time when it’s “okay” to stop having sex, and that’s a valid choice. But most people want to continue having sex in their second and third acts and find that the more they have it, the more vibrant they feel.

8. You will still like all the same sex acts. If you like it from behind when you’re 20, chances are you’ll like it from behind when you’re 60. You may not be quite as acrobatic, but you may be more creative, and with the pressure of rings and babies behind you, you may enjoy what you’re doing more.

9. You will still have orgasms. They may not be as strong or as frequent. Or they may be more powerful if sexual shame enveloped you when you were young. But you will have them with a partner, and when you’re flying solo.

10. Sex is about more than orgasms. When you’re young, sex tends to be one-dimensional, with orgasm and validation being the goals. When you’re older, you realize that sex is about the journey, not the destination. You enjoy exploring each other. Sexual confidence comes from finally being comfortable in your own skin regardless of the the appearance of your body parts.

Lululemon Recalls 300,000 Tops That Are Hitting People In The Face. Seriously.

If you thought the controversy surrounding Lululemon‘s sheer yoga pants was the end of their clothing kerfuffles, then you haven’t been hit in the face with the brand’s hard-tipped drawstring tops.

Lululemon is recalling over 300,000 women’s tops that have elastic drawstrings with hard ends, because they have “whipped some of the wearers in the face, causing injuries,” CNN reports.

Lululemon Dance Studio Jacket from Cottage Lane Sales/eBay

So far the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that seven injuries have been reported. As a result, the Vancouver-based company is recalling the clothing items causing the mishaps, a total of 133,000 tops in the U.S. and 185,000 in Canada.

“Our main priority is ensuring the product works for our guests, and we believe this is the necessary proactive action,” a spokeswoman for Lululemon told CNN.com. “We are committed to making our product right for our guests and regret any inconvenience this may have caused them.”

In the meantime, the CPSC suggests that customers who own the drawstring tops should stop wearing them, remove the draw cord or contact Lululemon to request a new, non-elastic draw cord with written instructions on how to replace the draw cord.

Tops recalled include the Carry and Go hoodie, Cool Down jacket, Course-ette jacket, Cozy Up jacket, Dance Studio jacket, Dance sweatshirt, Don’t Hurry Be Happy pullover, Gratitude wrap, Necessity jacket, Proactive jacket, Refresh snap up, Run Sun Blocker pullover, Run Track N Field jacket, Run With It jacket, Sanctuary jacket, Savasana tunic, Sing Floss Travel jacket, Stow ’N Go jacket, Stride jacket, Summertime tunic, Varsity hoodie, Victory jacket and Wear With All jacket.

Though Lululemon attests there haven’t been any “serious injuries” from the tops, it’s good to see that the company isn’t going to risk them happening.

James Taylor: ‘People Think My Music Is Rotting Their Teeth’

“It's been a while,” James Taylor writes with typical wry humor in the liner notes to Before This World, his first album of new material in 13 years, released by Concord Records on June 16. Rare among his peers, Taylor has never made a stylistic digression; like the 15 releases before it, his new full-length gently considers restlessness and regeneration, addiction and salvation, setting storm-tossed feelings to placid ripples of music.

Charleston: 9 People Killed In Shooting At Historic Black Church

Police in Charleston, S.C. have confirmed multiple fatalities after a shooting inside one of the oldest Black AME churches in the nation. A White gunman, who remains at large, opened fire at the Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night shooting and killing nine people.

Reports YAHOO! News:

Police described the suspect as a 21-year-old white man in a sweatshirt or hoodie and jeans, according to Charleston newspaper The Post and Courier. It cited unconfirmed reports that as many as eight people may have been hit by gunfire.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting occurred at the Emanuel AME Church around 9 p.m. local time.

He said police were still searching for a suspect, and he had no information on victims. Further details were not immediately available.

North Carolina television station WGHP, a Fox affiliate, reported on its website that some of the victims may have died.

Local broadcaster WCSC reported that the FBI was on the scene. The FBI could not be immediately reached to comment.

The website for the church said it has one of the largest and oldest black congregations in the region.

The church was built in 1891 and is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service.

“We’re still gathering information so it’s not the time yet for details,” said Mayor Joe Riley. “I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together.”

Church pastor, Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed. Authorities were still in the process of identifying the exact number of fatalities at press time.

Non-Carbs for People Who Love Carbs: Why Zoodles Are on the Table

zoodles

Like fashion, no food trend is ever truly new—just reinvented. Take spiralized vegetables, instance—the pasta-like ribbons of produce that have recently taken over our Instagram feeds and launched a generation of blogs and book deals—which are being credited with everything from weight loss to curing spaghetti cravings. This latest health food of choice was not invented in our carbphobic era (though it certainly seems made for it). Once commonplace garnishes in restaurants in the eighties and nineties, now these vegetable strips have become the main course, with cookbook authors on both side of the Atlantic, including the beloved Hemsley sisters, writing them into their cultish recipes and even endorsing spiralizers, the machines responsible for uniformly slicing zucchini and cucumber into thin bands.

But is turning butternut squash into fettuccini a realistic alternative for those who crave pasta but are carb-averse? “We eat with our eyes,” points out New York City–based nutritionist Tanya Zuckerbrot MS, RD, “and it absolutely looks like pasta.” Zuckerbrot makes a good argument, especially considering that, from a caloric and carbohydrate perspective, the swap is an inarguable health upgrade. Compare two cups of pasta weighing in at 480 calories, 90 grams of carbs, and two grams of fiber with two cups of zucchini zoodles at 66 calories, twelve grams of carbs, and four grams of fiber. Seems like a no-brainer, right?

It is if you’re using the right ingredients and the right sauce. “Not all vegetables are created equal,” says Zuckerbrot. “Zucchini and carrots are different from potatoes [which are] significantly higher from a caloric and carb perspective.” Meanwhile beets, summer squash, and jicama are as low in sugar as they are high in vitamins. And as healthy as a cup of zucchini noodles are by themselves, tossing them with a sauce that trades high-fat cheese for omega-rich avocado will only increase the benefits.

And now that companies like Hungryroot are capitalizing on the spiralizing craze—swooping in to take the guesswork out of the kitchen by delivering packaged meals of precut vegetables, along with health-conscious homemade sauces and roasted vegan toppings (additional animal proteins are optional) for you to prepare at your convenience (in less than seven minutes)—taking part in the trend has never been easier. Because, regardless of the waist-whittling effects of ordering vegetable noodles or slicing your own, replacing pasta with spiralized carrots or turnips is an infallible route to increasing your daily intake of vegetables, and with them, skin-brightening vitamins and minerals. How is that for holistic health?

What Most People Overlook When Quietly Planning Their Divorce

Rarely does a person decide overnight to get a divorce. It might take weeks, months–sometimes even years to finally act on such an important decision. No matter how long the planning process, many people overlook what should be taken care of before that big announcement. Careful planning, along with sensible choices and actions, should be your focus as you begin to strategize and plan for this major life-changing event.

Start by getting your affairs in order. Become knowledgeable about money matters. On the personal side, you will need tactics for dealing with friends, family, your children–others you interact with regularly. Once you sever the marital ties you don’t want to make a mad dash to tackle these issues.

Here’s what to do before letting the divorce cat out of the bag:

1. If you don’t already have one, set up your own separate bank account. This is where you will deposit your assets when it comes time to divide the joint ones. Deposit whatever is currently yours. Add to it as you can.

2. Tally up all joint assets. What do the two of you own? Stocks and bonds? IRA’s, insurance policies, other investments? What are they worth? Houses, a time-share, a vacant lot? Might you own a boat? Whose name are they in? What is their value? Rare coin collection? Valuable art? Antiques? Jewelry? Have these assets appraised. Insurance policies? Who are your beneficiaries? Prepare to make some changes. Update your Will.

3. Look into your joint liabilities. What do you owe as a couple? Inquire about loan balances on cars, properties, lines of credit, retail stores, and most of all credit cards. Find out exactly what you will be on the hook for. What obligations and debts can you get rid of once you make the split? If you do have any joint accounts at retail stores, credit card companies, restaurants, resorts, etc. and you wish to keep these privileges once the divorce “comes of age,” open your own accounts. Do it now. Be prepared to close ALL joint accounts on “D” day. Hire a good private investigator or Forensic accountant to help you get information, if necessary.

4. Rebuild your own “village.” Ditch the same set of business professionals you and your mate shared during the marriage. Find a new banker, accountant, therapist, housekeeper, gardener, animal groomer, lawyer…. Want to keep the ones you think you can trust? Have them sign a confidentiality agreement. My rule: Don’t share with your ex or compromise your privacy.

5. Seek the counsel of a good therapist: Don’t give up the joint sessions with your soon-to-be-ex, but find your own therapist. Your therapist can help you build fortitude as you work toward that critical “goodbye” moment, and also when the storm finally hits. He/she can guide you in decision-making and also bolster you during the aftermath. Choose someone with whom you feel comfortable. Find a therapist for the kids, too. They will need one.

6. Keep a detailed log: Itemize a thorough list of ALL assets and liabilities. Update it, as needed. Chart out your living expenses (think spousal and child support, if appropriate). Don’t overlook the cost of at-school lunches for the kids, their clothing expenses, childcare, and the differences in income between you and your mate. Finally, itemize the “why’s” for leaving your mate (this will help when you become more vulnerable, like around the holidays). You may also want to list your new contacts like realtors, CPAs, stockbrokers…those you may hire once you split. Keep your list in a diary. Compose/save it on your computer. Store it on your smart phone. Shove it in your safety deposit box. Be cautious. Keep it out of view and reach. You want immediate access to these notes once you are ready to declare “it’s over.”

7. Safeguard your personal safety and security. Concerned that your soon-to-be ex might physically hurt you? If he/she has shown signs of violence, issued threats–make sure you notify those close to you. Were there incidents in the past where your spouse inflicted physical and/or emotional abuse? Itemize these in your log. These notes may prove to be the most important records you keep. Document them with photos or recordings, if you can.

8. Be prepared to change all your passwords/names. Like passwords to your computer, your phone; bank accounts you acquire through property settlement. Think global. It also could include the registration to your car.

9. Begin lawyer shopping: Don’t wait until the last minute to hire an attorney. There are too many details to take care of as you undo this “contract.” Consult with several lawyers, though.

Find the best fit.

Robots Program People

It won’t be long before all new drugs are discovered by robots. This start-up is an example of that trend.

And it won’t be long before IBM’s Watson can diagnose and prescribe treatments better than any human doctor.

Put those two trends together and robots will be programming humans with drugs. Drugs are the user interface to our moistware.

In many cases, the drugs will be the type that change your personality. The meds might make you happy when you are naturally depressed, calm when you would otherwise be anxious, and so on.

I’ll say it again: The machines will literally be programming our brains with drugs. And we will let them do it because we all want to be happy and calm. We also want to be horny, energetic, optimistic, fit, outgoing, and lots more. There are drugs for all of that, and more on the way.

Okay, okay. I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that humans program the machines, and the machines just do their job. So really, humans are just creating useful medicines for other humans. The machines are merely our tools.

By that way of thinking, we should give trophies to the parents of successful athletes because they, along with coaches, created the athlete. The athlete simply did what he was programmed to do. He needed his parents’ DNA and a lot of coaching to succeed. So why give the athlete credit when he is just a tool of his parents and coaches?

The short answer is that we have magical notions about our souls and our consciousness and our free will. So we think the universe revolves around humans. We say the athlete is the one doing the great deeds, ignoring the infinite set of forces in the universe that are necessary for every specific outcome.

An objective view of the world is that everything is an endless chain of cause and effect. You cannot point to one link in a 15-billion-year chain of events and say, “That’s the one that mattered. Give it a trophy.” It all had to happen just the way it did to get the result you got.

And so while it is true that humans will create the amazing medical machines of the future, we do not know what the machines will subsequently discover or prescribe. And being ignorant of the future is what we call “free will.” For all practical purposes, an AI platform that does its own thing and discovers new cures will be just like a human doctor. Neither of them will have real “free will” but it might look to outsiders as if they do.

So there you have it: Someday, for sure, machines will be programming humans. And that day will probably be in your lifetime. But don’t be afraid because the robots will someday have a drug that will make you feel totally okay with being their pet.

I mean that literally. You won’t have a care in the world.

Why Mike Huckabee Fails His Christian Duty By Mocking Transgender People

How should Christians treat transgender people?

The answer seems obvious: With respect and love. Yet former governor Mike Huckabee, a favorite of Christian conservatives, took to mocking transgender people at the National Religious Broadcasters Convention as he criticized city ordinances that allow people to use public restrooms based on how they identify their gender.

The website Buzzfeed unearthed a video of the February comments in which the former Baptist minister quipped, “Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE. I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’” As the presumably Christian audience clapped and giggled, Huckabee said, “You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous, doesn’t it?”

Yes, it does. But not for the reason they think. What’s ridiculous — and sad — is that Huckabee, a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, and his audience appear to believe that transgender people are perpetrating some sort of hoax so they can gain access to public restrooms or locker rooms. Or that they’ve chosen to identify with a particular gender on a whim. This disregards the actual lives of transgender people, some of whom (though not all) have described feeling trapped in the wrong body from a young age. What’s so funny about that?

Worse, the butt of this joke are people who are already too frequently marginalized by society. According to the Human Rights Campaign, transgender people are nearly four times more likely to have an annual household income of less than $ 10,000 and twice as likely to be unemployed compared with the general population. The 2011 National Transgender Discrimination Survey found that “78 percent of those who expressed a transgender identity or gender non-conformity while in grades K-12 reported harassment — harassment so severe it led 15 percent to leave school.”

The majority of the youth surveyed by HRC in 2014 reported they lacked a supportive family member to help them face the harassment and ostracizing at school.

One twentysomething transgender person told Religion News Service columnist Jonathan Merritt in 2013, that his growing up in the church was damaging. He felt he couldn’t talk to his parents or his pastor. Instead, the then-she, prayed God would help her become a boy.

Yet when Huckabee was asked about his cruel joke — a version of which he has told on a few occasions — he dismissed the query, saying, “Nobody ever asks me about it except the media. They’re the only ones who seem to be stirred up about it.” While attempting to indict journalists, Huckabee was in fact indicting those who surround him who he seems to be suggesting are indifferent to Christian unkindness toward transgender people.

Though Huckabee might believe that being transgender is sinful, that’s not a uniform position. Pat Robertson acknowledged in 2013 that “I think there are men who are in a woman’s body. It’s very rare, but it’s true. Or women that are in men’s bodies.” Robertson added, “I don’t think there’s any sin associated with” transitioning to the other gender.

The church should be the safest place in the world to discuss personal struggles. Huckabee could help make it so by saying two simple words: I’m sorry.

The Politics of LGBTQ People: Caitlyn Jenner and Class Differences

Should LGBTQ people automatically get along with each other because they are designated as a minority group that has endured decades of oppression and stigmatization? It was exactly a year ago that I decided to pen an article exploring the LGBTQ acronym and why we remain divided when that will only lead to failures in achieving civil rights. And what do you know, last week a preponderance of negativity arose out of Caitlyn Jenner’s posing for Vanity Fair magazine since her conservative politics are disconnected with the presumed LGBTQ’s population’s liberal politics. But let’s delve a little deeper into the situation because what is dividing us aside from various values and ends is class differences. I said it, it is a fight over class, and let me explain how.

Caitlyn Jenner is a white, able-bodied, wealthy celebrity, former athlete, who has decided at the ripe age of 65 to transition from a male to female. According to the comments that have circulated in social media since earlier last week, Caitlyn was formerly embraced by the LGBTQ population for taking this huge step in her life — but when LGBTQ people shed light on the real Caitlyn regarding her conservative politics, we all changed our opinions to abandon her without reservation. Should we ignore her now that we understand what her predominate political views are, or should we give her a chance to see if those views will change over time as a transgendered person? Of course, we should not forget that Caitlyn has a planned show to air soon, so we have to remember what possibly underlies the agenda here: likely, making money!

Turning the conversation back to class, LGBTQ organizations have only hired leaders who are invested in white, privileged, able-bodied, patriarchal politics. Boards of these organizations are privileged and do not have an interest in those in the lower and middle classes who likely have intersecting minority identities. We have witnessed this struggle since the beginning of the LGBTQ movements, in HIV/AIDS activism, among other social movements that have occurred in American history.

I am a working-class man who came from poverty: thinking about class differences will always be part and parcel with anything I do in life. As such, I have felt, noticed, and experienced firsthand accounts of privileged, white, gay men who are oblivious and disinterested in the values of marginalized groups within the LGBTQ population. When I made attempts to discuss why this ignorance occurs, I have been objectified and silenced. The bigger question is why does class not enter the dialogue when so many of us are not privileged? It has been written about extensively that class is an invisible force within our capitalist economy where the hypothesis is the individual can dictate and control the outcomes through their autonomy and self-determination. This is conservative bullshit politics to keep the disempowered enslaved, reinforcing the myth of making ends meet in a deregulated economy that only privileges the one percent. And with this trend of lasting deregulation is the consequence of the 99 percent being in huge debt and barely surviving.

So, what happens to the multiply marginalized LGBTQ people if they cannot fight for their values to be part of the LGBTQ agenda? Common sense would tell you that their voices go unrecognized and the privileged LGBTQ class continues to dictate the how, what, who, why, when, where. Caitlyn Jenner, although a role model in demonstrating self-acceptance, has used all of her one percent status to get surgery, in order to boost her ego and public image. Tell me who has 100 million dollars net worth like Jenner to transition successfully, when I have met personally a number of poor, working and middle-class transgendered people who have endured psychological turmoil before, during, and after the transition process. The transition has taken years, mainly unsuccessful, some even remain with original plumbing, some with scars from bad cosmetic surgery, and some feeling regret from not having the backing of family, friends, and a career to support them. Can we compare the lives of the former and latter? Once again, class is the divide here.

Let’s remember the class politics with Ian Reisner and Mati Weiderpass, both wealthy, Jewish, gay men, who own a number of gay venues and properties and deny that they provided presidential campaign funds for conservative Ted Cruz after, including hosting a party at the hotel they own, The Out Hotel. I am not looking to attack them for their contributions even if I contentiously disagree with them for supporting Cruz, but class is the dividing difference here where the values and allegiance of rich, wealthy LGBTQ are with corporation, for-profit, and deregulated environments. Sexuality in this occurrence obviously sits much further down on the hierarchy of needs (maybe does not make it on the list?) and earning more money despite being millionaires is the top priority.

My recommendation, I reiterate as in the past, is for the 99 percent of LGBTQ population to forget settling our differences with the 1 percent; instead, we are the majority voice and need to exercise that right regularly. Our voices, stories, identities, beliefs, and values deserve the front page of news articles, in social media, in interviews, in books — everywhere! I am not asking for revolution to effect change, but for the acknowledgement that class plays a significant role within LGBTQ politics. And with this acknowledgement will develop a public consciousness in the LGBTQ population on how to level the playing field.

Whoopi Goldberg Slams Duggars For Hypocrisy: ‘You’re Not Forgiving Of People Who Feel Differently Than You’

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar broke their silence this week about son Josh’s confessed sexual molestation of his sisters — and women of “The View” were having none of it.

Talk show co-host Whoopi Goldberg was the most full-throated in her rebuke of the “19 Kids And Counting” parents on Thursday, the morning after the Duggars had taken to Fox News’ “The Kelly File” to defend their son, who molested five girls when he was a teen, and their own handling of the situation.

“You brought God up, so it makes it OK to say this,” Goldberg said of the Duggar patriarch pleading for forgiveness for his oldest son. “You’re not forgiving of people. You’re not forgiving of people who feel differently than you.”

“Don’t bring up God … and talk about God forgiving people when you don’t have forgiveness in their own hearts,” Goldberg added.

The Duggars have a history of supporting anti-LGBT causes. Last fall, Michelle Duggar recorded a robocall to voters in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in which she protested a local anti-discrimination ordinance. As part of her argument, she linked transgender individuals to child predators.

“The View” co-host Nicole Wallace echoed Goldberg, saying the Duggar mother had acted hypocritically.

“When you say God will forgive my son who molested my daughters, if that’s your world view, if that’s how you got through it, OK,” Wallace said. “But you can’t say God can’t forgive a transgender person.”

“If God can forgive [Josh], then I hope other people can realize that God can forgive them,” Jim Bob Duggar had told “The Kelly File” host Megyn Kelly.

Duggar also argued that his son, now 27, was not a pedophile because he was also underage at the time of the molestations.

“It was a child preying on a child,” Duggar said of his son’s actions.

“There was so much grief in our hearts. I think, as parents, we felt, ‘We’re failures,'” Michelle Duggar said during the Kelly interview. “We’ve tried to raise our kids to do what’s right, to know what’s right, and yet one of our children made some really bad choices. And I think, as a parent, just — we were devastated.”
