Mitch (Luke Wilson) returns home from a less-than-pleasant business trip one evening to discover his wife, Heidi (Juliette Lewis), involved in a ménage à trois with two blindfolded strangers. Feeling less than welcome at home after this, Mitch rents a house near the campus of a nearby college; two of Mitch's old college buddies, Beanie (Vince Vaughn) and Frank (Will Ferrell), stop by to cheer him up. They soon become regular guests at Mitch's place, despite the fact that Frank only recently wed Marissa (Perrey Reeves), while Beanie and his wife, Lara (Leah Remini), are busy with two kids. Beanie decides to throw a housewarming party for Mitch, and since Beanie sells audio equipment for a living, he's able to trick out the big bash with a massive PA system and an appearance by Snoop Dogg. Mitch soon finds he's the not-entirely-willing proprietor of the school's leading party spot, which raises the ire of Pritchard (Jeremy Piven), a dean at the college who was the target of Mitch, Frank, and Beanie's abuse when they were all students. Pritchard arranges to have Mitch's neighborhood zoned into a student housing district, but Beanie and Frank respond by forming a fraternity and making Mitch's home their headquarters. Mitch, however, is not enthusiastic about the idea, especially as he's trying to impress Nicole (Ellen Pompeo), a beautiful divorcee who is less than enchanted with Frank and Beanie's "party hearty" lifestyle.

Why I’m Scared to Send My Daughter to School in America: Gun Violence by the Numbers

gun violence

I love this country. I love the state of New York, where I was born and raised, and where my husband and I are raising our almost-2-year-old daughter. When I see the images of Syrian refugees risking their lives to escape the terror in their native country or read about the Nigerian girls who were kidnapped from their school by Boko Haram, my heart aches, and surges with gratitude that I live in America. But with the news of each deadly mass shooting, the sense of security I feel here is falling away.

Even more disturbing, while my fear and my anger mount each time I learn that innocent lives were lost to gun violence—at church, on college campuses, at the movies, at the supermarket—I’m no longer surprised by the headlines. I remember the horror I felt in my gut when my mom called to tell me about the Newtown massacre as I waited for a flight at LaGuardia on December 14, 2012. Three years later, tweets and TV special reports announcing mass shootings are routine.

I worry for my own safety. Over the summer, when the lights went down at the movie theater where I went to see Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, I wondered for a brief moment: “Could someone here take out a gun and start shooting?” That’s what happened at a Lafayette, Louisiana, showing of the same movie, where a gunman opened fire into the crowd, killing two women: Mayci Breaux, 21, and Jillian Johnson, 33.

Far worse, I worry for my baby’s safety. More than once, when ringing the buzzer and waiting for the door to unlock at her daycare, a wonderful place filled with loving people and the wallpaper of children’s drawings, my mind has gone to a grim place: “Could the wrong sort of person slip in here somehow? Could she ever be hurt at this, or another, school?” It’s happened before, many times, in many places.

It’s tempting, and momentarily comforting, to tell yourself, It won’t happen to me. Like the jolt of panic you feel when your plane lurches with turbulence and you reason with yourself: What are the odds? But when it comes to gun violence and schoolchildren, that rationale isn’t working for me. The odds, as it turns out, are sickening.

I gathered the following statistics from the CDC, the FBI, and Everytown for Gun Safety, Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control group. (It should be noted that Everytown defines school shootings to include “accidental discharges of firearms, suicide attempts, and incidents in which no involved party was affiliated with the school.”) Unbelievably, or believably, since I began writing this piece in my head yesterday morning, and compiling these numbers, there have been two more school shootings in this country. A freshman killed one student and injured three more at Northern Arizona University; another student was fatally shot and a second person was injured at Texas Southern University. What is there left to say?

3 Generations Of Tight-Knit Family Have Worn This Sweater For School Picture Day

Figuring out what to wear for school picture day can be stressful, but this kid had his outfit picked out before he was even born.

In early October, Brady Gose, 7, from Brownsburg, Indiana, became the third generation in his family to wear the same sweater for school picture day. Five of the Gose males have worn the gray pullover for their first-grade pictures since the 1950s, and Brady took on the tradition with dignity and style.

“If we had a family heirloom, this simple store-bought sweater is it,” Chuck Gose, Brady’s father, told The Huffington Post in an email. “As Brady’s dad, it means the world to see his pride in wearing the sweater.”

Gose’s father and two uncles all wore the sweater for their first-grade pictures when they lived in Maine, simply because their grandmother thought it would be fun. That sentiment stuck, and Gose’s parents had him wear it for his own first-grade picture in 1982, in Springboro, Ohio, catching the attention of a local newspaper.

After his father’s death in 1999, before Brady was born, Gose had every intention of honoring both the tradition and his family.

“The sweater is a way for his memory to live on, not only to my son but also future generations,” he told HuffPost. “I know that he would be proud to see the grandson he never met carrying on the tradition.”

The sweet symbolism of the sweater has resonated with the family’s Brownsburg community, making the 7-year-old feel like a small town star, with a bright smile to match.

“I think it’s the simplicity of the story is why people have enjoyed it. It’s not fancy. It’s not glamorous,” Gose said. “It centers around a symbolic time like school pictures.”

Florida School Board Believes Principal is a Hypno-Witch

Before you read this post, you might want to read my post on why sensational stories such as this are almost always untrue. The context is perfect.

In Florida, a school board paid settlements of $ 200,000 apiece to the families of three students who died after being hypnotized by their principal. (In this context, “after” does not mean immediately after.) Two students committed suicide and a third ran his car off the road after getting a strange look on his face, according to his girlfriend who survived the crash.

The principal in question had hypnotized 75 kids for various reasons. The other 72 kids did not try to kill themselves as far as we know.

You might be wondering what I think of that situation, given that I am a trained hypnotist. Answer: 100% bullshit.

A Florida school board confused hypnosis with witchcraft. Literally.

Rule number one in hypnosis is that it is impossible to convince people to hurt themselves, or others, with hypnosis. A hypnotized subject is ALWAYS in their normal mind, just relaxed and going with the flow. There is no such thing as a hypnotic state where the subject can’t control himself. If I hypnotize you and hand you a weapon to use on yourself, you will laugh and hand it back, the same as if you were not hypnotized.

Hypnosis can’t convince a subject to harm himself or others. Researchers have tried that very thing and failed on lots of occasions.

The wrinkle in that sort of test is that if I hypnotize you and hand you a gun, you might assume the gun is a toy because no reasonable person would hand you a loaded gun and ask you to use it. So there might be some confusion involved, but no hypnotized subject would consider suicide or murder as a result of hypnosis sessions. That just isn’t a thing.

The principal pleaded no contest, but he knows he is 100% innocent, and indeed was probably going the extra mile to be helpful. You don’t hypnotize that many kids unless the word-of-mouth is good. The principal was probably helping a lot of kids cope. Hypnosis is an excellent tool for that sort of thing.

Three deaths in one high school does seem excessive. But ask yourself what kinds of kids ask adults for mind-related help. I would think the troubled teens would be at the front of the line. It should not be surprising that those 75 kids had more problems than the average. Still, three deaths in a short period does seem like a big coincidence.

But coincidences happen. You don’t hear about them unless you have a principal accused of witchcraft. That is essentially what happened here since only magic would produce the results in question. Hypnosis would not. Ever. And certainly not three times.

Why does the school board suspect hypnosis was part of the problem? Because three deaths in a short window is an unlikely event.

Why do I know the principal is 100% innocent? Because a hypnotist killing three kids is a far less likely event, essentially impossible. People die in clusters every day, by chance. But no hypnotist has ever caused a person to harm himself or others. I can imagine no scenario in which a hypnotist is helping a basketball player learn to relax at the free throw line and accidentally convinces the subject to kill himself next week.

It just isn’t a thing.

You might wonder why a skilled hypnotist would walk away from this sort of situation instead of hypnotizing the board to give him a parade and a big raise. The answer is that too many people are involved. It is an uncontrolled environment. His skills would be useless against the angry villagers with pitchforks, and it sounds like that was the situation. In his situation, I too would have pled no contest and walked away. The money is being paid by the school district, not the principal.

The ex-principal’s name is George Kenney. I only mention his name for the benefit of search engines. If you are reading this because you are considering hiring Mr. Kenney, or you wonder if he is safe around kids, let me say as clearly as I can that he was a scapegoat for a coincidental set of tragedies. Hypnosis – by its very nature – could not have been part of the problem. Mr. Kenney is a victim in this case. I say this with certainty.

Teen Stands Up To School For Shaming Students Who Break Dress Code

When Lydia Cleveland started seeing young women at her school being shamed for their clothes, she decided to speak out.

According to the 17-year-old senior at James River High School in Midlothian, Virginia, the enforcement of dress code at her school is unbalanced and targets the young women more often than the young men.

Cleveland told The Huffington Post she has seen many girls at her school wearing a sweatshirt or sweatpants with the words “dress code” written on them if their clothes do not adhere to the dress code, which prohibits see-through clothing, backless blouses, sagging pants and other clothing. The teen said she hand-delivered a letter to her school’s administration on Sept. 18, in which she requested a clearer dress code, equal enforcement and a replacement for the sweatsuit.

Cleveland told HuffPost that students can either sit in detention or wear the sweatsuit if their parents are unavailable to bring them a change of clothes. She sees the second option as a tactic to shame students and finds the punishment “incredibly unreasonable.”

“If we think shaming someone is OK, how long before they bring back a dunce cap or something because this is basically what that is,” she said.

According to Yahoo Parenting, a PowerPoint presentation that all James River High School students received about dress code violations featured nine photos of examples of what girls could and could not wear and two photos of what boys could and could not wear. Cleveland told HuffPost she met with her school district a few weeks ago to discuss the dress code’s inconsistency and alternatives for the sweatsuit. She also has a meeting with her principal and school administration planned for Oct. 7.

Though Cleveland has received feedback from people claiming she simply wants to get rid of the dress code, she said she does recognize the need for it. She explained that she thinks plain sweatpants would be “more than enough” and would factor out the shaming element. She told HuffPost the county claims the words “dress code” are written on the clothes because students were not returning them before, though Cleveland finds that to be a “lame excuse.”

The high school senior also explained that the way her school’s dress code is enforced speaks to a bigger conflict.

“The fact that they’re just enforcing the dress code so fiercely against young women is telling them that their education comes second to the education of boys at my school,” she said. “Whether they mean to send that message or not, that’s part of the message they’re sending.”

As for the message it sends to the young men at her school, Cleveland told HuffPost it contributes to a major problem in our society today.

“And I think to young men, it’s sending the message that young women and their bodies are distracting and that you can’t help but be distracted,” she said. “It’s not your fault, it’s their responsibility to cover up. And I think to an extent that’s promoting rape culture and victim blaming in our society.”

The Huffington Post has reached out to Chesterfield County Public Schools for comment. We will update this story if we hear back.

Yuri, Piero, Noma, and Erin: Meet the Boys Keeping Public School Cool

public school male models

Who says girls get to have all the fun during Fashion Week? Public School may have already displayed their streamlined menswear looks during the New York Fashion Week: Men’s collections, but that didn’t stop designers Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne from adding a select few male models to their lineup for Spring. Utilizing a mix of brand favorites like Yuri Pleskun and Noma Han—both of whom have been appearing on Public School’s runway since the label’s debut—and emerging talents like newcomers Piero Méndez and Erin Mommsen, Public School’s boys provided an appealing menswear moment. Get to know the guys who brought a touch of cool to Public School’s catwalk.

Yuri Pleskun
Known for his cooler-than-thou nonchalance and bright blue-green eyes, Bronx boy Yuri Pleskun has been one of the world’s top male models for the past few years. Discovered on the subway back in 2008, Pleskun quickly became a favorite of everyone from Marc Jacobs to Steven Meisel. With his buzz cut and tattoos, Pleskun was one of the guys who helped bring in the trend toward atypical male models, and as the former face of Public School’s advertising, he was a clear choice for the show.

Piero Méndez
Since his debut opening Prada’s Spring/Summer 2015 menswear show, Spanish newcomer Piero Méndez has become an in-demand figure on the male modeling scene. With his full lips and lush curls, Méndez possesses a romantic beauty, but at heart he’s a jock. Méndez excelled as an athlete—prior to modeling, he pursued a career as a professional soccer player. Their loss: These days he’s too busy fronting campaigns for Balenciaga and Calvin Klein to become the next Neymar. Instead he spends his time traveling the world and documenting each new trip on Instagram.

Erin Mommsen
Androgynous and elegant with a memorable name, Erin Mommsen has been building a name for himself working for labels like Opening Ceremony, Kenzo, and Y-3. A skateboarder and an artist, Mommsen prefers to share paintings and drawings on his social media rather than selfies. His look has won a few very famous fans: Kanye West tapped him for his first Adidas presentation, and Lily-Rose Depp recently posted his pic to Instagram with a telltale emoji.

Noma Han
Good looks and a winning personality are a rare combination, but Noma Han is in possession of both. Signed to his agency after his photographer roommate submitted his photos, Han has been steadily working for fashion’s best and brightest since 2010. Always ready with a joke or comic backstage selfie, Han is a regular at Billy Reid, Dries Van Noten, and Public School. When asked what makes his longstanding collaboration with Osborne and Chow work, Han’s response was fittingly tongue in cheek: “Every season I think to myself, ‘Maybe this time they won’t want to use me!’ ”

Back to School: 3 Ways To Tell If Your Child Custody Agreement Is The Right Fit

Most co-parenting families with school-aged children have two basic parenting time schedules: one for school vacations and holidays and the other for the school year. If you and your former spouse separated or divorced over the summer, this month may be a crucial turning point as the two of you test out the “school year” portion of your child custody agreement for the first time. What can you expect from this new schedule, and how can you tell if changes are needed in order to help your children truly thrive in the coming months? Here are three ways to tell if the custody agreement you have in place is the best fit for your child, and for you.

Does Your Parenting Time Plan Reflect Realistic Expectations?
It’s natural for emotions to run high during a separation or divorce, especially when it comes to critical matters such as deciding child custody. Parents may initially make unrealistic custody grabs based on fear or insecurity, demanding full custody or the vast majority of parenting time, even if their work schedule or living arrangement makes this kind of plan impossible or even detrimental to their children.

If you veered at first towards making bold custody claims out of your hurt or angry feelings, hopefully you had an attorney by your side who was able to steer you towards making sound decisions for the sake of your children. If you were not so lucky, you may have a parenting time plan in place that might work in the short term, but down the road is at risk of imploding when schedules clash and you start showing up late for pick-ups (or not at all), or put your kids in situations in which they lack proper care and supervision.

Yes, it can take time for any co-parenting family to settle into a new school year routine. Still, take some time this month to give your parenting time plan an honest assessment. Does it reflect your need to punish your former spouse or your child’s needs to have a calm, stable school year with love and support from both parents? If your self-assessment reveals a parenting time plan that could use some tweaks, check in with an attorney to learn more about child custody modification, which you and your former spouse may be able to renegotiate on your own terms.

Does Your Parenting Time Plan Reflect Your Children’s Ages, Activities & Needs?
When you decided on a child custody arrangement, you probably took into consideration a number of factors such as your children’s ages, personalities and developmental needs; your careers and outside commitments; child care and the geographical distance between parents’ homes; and your children’s academic and extracurricular activities.

What is important to remember is that children can change, sometimes dramatically, in only the space of a few months. For example, maybe your child will discover their passion for soccer this year and now have practice and home and away games most of the week. Or perhaps your child will unfortunately hit a stumbling block in math and benefit from after school tutoring. Or maybe you will get a promotion at work with more pay — and more hours. On the other hand, perhaps your child is now in preschool or kindergarten and can handle more frequent transitions between parental homes. Or your child recently developed a health or medical need that makes staying in one home preferable.

As inevitable changes occur for your child (or for you or your former spouse), keep track of how they may affect your parenting time plan. For example, if your child has back-to-back tutoring and then sports practice after school, does it still make sense to schedule a dinner together on the same night? Or could a different plan benefit your child?

Parenting time plans are binding, so if you and your former spouse mutually agree to make permanent changes to the schedule that you believe are your child’s best interests, you will need to submit these changes to the courts. Also be aware that if you informally cede parenting time to your former spouse on a regular basis, your former spouse could go to court seeking to have these changes incorporated, with or without your consent.

Are You and Your Former Spouse Able to Maintain Communication?
Finally, a make or break issue for many parenting time plans is how well co-parents can communicate with each other to keep their schedule on track and workable for all involved. Something as simple as arranging to text each other with neutral comments to confirm pick ups and drops offs (i.e., “Will be at bus stop at 4 pm on Friday”) can go a long ways towards creating a positive co-parenting relationship. There are even divorce apps to help co-parents stay on the same page. All you need to do is upload your current parenting time plan and the app will send you both reminders of who needs to be where and when. Or go low-tech by using a notebook that you pass back and forth during custody swaps with notes on how your child is doing and other messages.

The bottom line? Consider it your ongoing homework assignment this year to gauge how well your parenting time plan is working, and whether you are doing your part to make it work. One last point to keep in mind? The old “dog ate my homework” excuse doesn’t apply when it comes to parenting your kids.

TV and the Movies Go Back to School

High school is a universe of seemingly endless drama — with nuggets of comedy, too — as these 30 classic movies and TV shows set in the classroom perfectly illustrate. From the working-class students of 1967’s “To Sir, With Love” to the enthusiastic songbirds of modern-day “Glee,” high school characters have made us laugh, cry and beat a hasty path to our local mall — to scoop up the plaid skirts and knee socks of “Clueless,” the legwarmers of “Fame,” the hooded Bajas of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Who can forget Ferris Bueller’s white wingtips and Tracy Flick’s prim sweater vests and Jordan Catalano’s leather choker? And the hair — “Don’t touch the hair,” insisted Vinnie Barbarino of “Welcome Back, Kotter.” As millions of teenagers head back to school, here’s a look back at their most entertaining fictional counterparts.

Back To School Tips For Parents Of LGBTQ Kids

Back to school time is filled with the excitement of new backpacks, teachers, and reunions with friends. But for lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender parents and students that excitement can be accompanied by anxiety and fear. New schools, classmates, and teachers may also mean coming out again to unknowing peers. This may happen in stride for some LGBTQ parents and students; others have legitimate concerns as another school year begins.

The goal for all students, however, is to provide them with a safe, productive, and supportive learning environment. The climate around LGBTQ issues may not always be the sunniest, but even in school districts where progress needs to be made, these goals are something all parents and students deserve and should expect. Here are ways you can advocate for yourself and your child as you begin another school year.

Talk
Before your child enters the classroom, schedule a time to sit down with their teacher(s) or school administrators to be sure everyone is comfortable and informed about your family’s structure and identity. Give the teacher the opportunity to ask you questions. Understanding breeds knowledge, and sometimes it is our job to inform others. As long as conversations are mutually beneficial and respectful, open lines of communication are necessary.

Talk to your child too. Ask them what they need to feel safe and supported in the classroom and relay that information to their teacher(s). This may include the use of their preferred name, pronouns, or the allowance of a specific friend to be with them during transitions to reduce the possibility of harassment.

Revisit these conversations and check-in frequently. And listen. Your child and their teacher(s) have first-hand knowledge of their school day; be sure you are giving them the opportunity to talk to you too. Everyone must be on the same page for your child to feel safe and comfortable to tackle a new school year.

Provide Resources

Even the most well-intentioned teachers may not know how to support students of LGBTQ parents or LGBTQ students. There are many resources available and they will find wonderfully helpful information through Welcoming Schools, a Human Rights Campaign project, or The Stonewall National Education Project. Both sites offer professional development tools, lessons, and ways to make sure all students feel safe and important in the classroom.

Another valuable organization is Trans Student Educational Resources, which is a youth-led group focusing on creating a more trans-friendly education system. And Gender Spectrum is a great resource to learn how to create “gender sensitive and inclusive environments for all children and teens.”

Your state may also have local programs dedicated to educating teachers on the important ways to embrace diversity.

Ignorance cannot be an excuse; material is available. Show your child’s teachers where to find it.

Expect Acceptance
And then expect them to use the resources. If necessary, use the school’s mission statement as an argument to provide your child with a safe and inclusive learning space. Amanda Rodhenburg, Director of Advocacy at Outright Vermont gave examples when looking at two different elementary schools’ mission statements. One stated they “strive to develop cultural competency in our students.” Rodhenburg stated, “If a teacher were reluctant to be inclusive about non-hetero families, I would tie the necessity to that very line.”

Another school listed goals that every child should be supported in school, home, and their community. Rodhenburg, “Again, I would tie the imperative for inclusivity to the goal of students being supported in school and at home. Y’all came up with that directive, now you have to stick with it.”

Dr. Molly Fechter-Leggett, clinical psychologist, also reminds parents to use the school’s guidance counselor as an ally and professional trained in LGBTQ issues to help families and students overcome feelings of exclusion. Dr. Fechter-Leggett says, “Counselors are the go-to allies for many kids who transition. If there are barriers with teachers, counselors can often work to help educate them about the social and emotional aspects of the child’s experience.”

Posters, Safe Space stickers, inclusion of LGBTQ history into the classroom curriculum validate a child’s need for a safe learning space. Learning that a great author or famous scientist identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender is also very empowering to a child who has parents with these identities or who may be LGBTQ themselves.

The quality and quantity of books with LBGTQ characters and themes are increasing every day. Be sure your school’s teachers know about them and expect them to be available to your child. Check here for a list of books for all ages.

Find or Create Community
Joining or creating a community of other like-minded students builds confidence and safe places for your child at school. It also increases visibility and improves the school’s climate towards diversity. The Gay-Straight Alliance Network (GSA Network) and theGay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) are national organizations with local chapters. If your child’s school doesn’t have a Gay-Straight Alliance, encourage them to start one.

Safety is Non-negotiable
If you find out your child is being bullied by another student, the first step may be to talk to their teacher or the school administration. Contacting your local LGBTQ resource center may be helpful too. Workers at these centers and youth advocacy leaders can help educate your child’s teacher(s) on the best way to create a cultural shift in the classroom to help prevent future situations.

If the bullying or harassment is coming from a teacher or school administrator, it may be necessary to contact your state’s Human Rights Commission to report discrimination. More of your rights can be found at GLAD.org.

Bottom line: Safety is non-negotiable. You have every right to speak up and to be heard.

All of the fun and exciting aspects of a new school year should not be overshadowed by ignorance. You, your family, and your child deserve the same respect and opportunities as every other family and student. It may take a little more work and time in some cases, but the benefits of a happy and confident student are well worth the extra energy.

Good luck parents!

Twelve School Resources for your Transgender Binder of Awesomeness

2015-08-22-1440259743-5169206-11181280_10207004570968826_8900215724232914012_n.jpg

The Twinadoes started fifth grade yesterday! It was with a 60/40 blend of trepidation and joy that I dropped them off at the door of another new school. While homeschooling was easier than I expected, I was pretty excited to have the house to myself for the first time in 6 months. The kids were both really pumped to spend the day making friends, having recess, checking out a new school, and oh yeah, maybe learning some stuff.

As it has been in every school, the Little Miss was the first transgender student they’d interacted with. My husband and I met with the principal almost two weeks prior to the start of school to share our story and meet with someone who would become an important part of our lives. We shared our journey and some of the concerns we had for the upcoming year. Our principal is a wonderful person and I’m really relieved to be with yet another understanding educator who is eager to learn and create a safe space for all children.

Unfortunately, for the first time in her school history our daughter will have to use the unisex bathroom. The school system has a policy in place that dictates that all transgender kids will use a unisex bathroom instead of the bathroom of their affirmed gender. My heart sank when I was given this information, though it was paired with the statement that we would work together to get the right people the information they needed to make positive changes for this population of children.

At home that night, I watched as our daughter’s little shoulders, so high with expectation, slumped in shock when she heard that she wouldn’t be able to use the girl’s bathroom. For her, being forced to use the unisex bathroom indicated that the school didn’t believe her. It told her that the school thought she wasn’t really a girl as she would be denied the very basic right to use the bathroom with all the rest of the girls. By telling her to use a unisex bathroom, it set her up for questions from her peers, it put focus on an area of her body that already caused her distress, highlighted her difference from her peers, and set up the school as her largest source of stress instead of a safe haven for learning.

For a child who has always identified as female, this was both confusing and embarrassing. We explained how her hero, Jazz Jennings, went through similar struggles and helped pave the way for our daughter to use the girl’s bathroom at her previous school in Florida. Though it will be hard, she now has the opportunity to help create change in her current school system.

I want to be positive and see the tremendous potential that our daughter has to help create change here in our town. It was with mixed feelings that I gave her the positive spin of, “Go, be a trailblazer, young one.”

But, my heart hurts that the responsibility falls on her shoulders. It would have been wonderful to show up to a school system that was ready for a child like ours. I will say this, the hearts of the teachers in our school seem to be ready for our daughter and I’ve been told that the teachers are eager to learn. It would be the expectation I guess, for the next line in the story to say, “And the rest is just paperwork.”

But, it isn’t that simple. I foolishly thought that we’d be able to share our story, everyone would see how silly it is to keep our daughter (and kids like her) out of the bathroom of their affirmed gender, that I might have to point out the Department of Justice’s opinion on the matter, and that would be the end of it. But, no. There will be meetings, and education, and calling in reinforcements to help with the education, and making ourselves available to answer questions, and these things take time.

If you don’t already know this about me, I’m impatient on a good day. It’s not uncommon for my family to see me fuming at my computer as I wait for the little round spinning rainbow image to do what I’ve asked the computer to do. I’m even more impatient when it involves a process change (ask my family about the stress of my doctoral capstone project). When the issue causes my daughter to feel shame and makes her feel different, then the slow process of change is likely going to drive me insane.

I know that other families are going through this process too. So, I’m going to share the links to everything I had printed up in the Purple Transgender Binder of Awesomeness which I gave to the administration of our school district. I’ve also updated the resources page at Non-Conforming Mom to include these. And, because I write when I’m agitated, frustrated, happy, and bored, I’m sure I’ll be giving updates along the way.

Fashion Flashback: What Top Designers Wore in High School

They wore bell-bottoms wider at the hem than at the waist, shoulder pads a linebacker would envy, glittery butterfly hair clips, fuzzy boas, and, of course, a few “sewed-it-myself” looks. When WWD asked designers — from Tommy Hilfiger and Norma Kamali to Brian Atwood and Pamela Love — to share memories of their back-to-school fashion choices, we discovered some were preppy wannabes and others were fans of grunge, but most were just teens trying to find their own personal style.

‘Twas the Night Before School Starts

‘Twas the night before school starts
And I. Can’t. Even.
Contain my excitement
Because they’re all finally LEAVIN’!

Lunch boxes, backpacks, and shoes by the door
Filling summer days with fun my job is no more

They’re all finally in bed- bathed, brushed, and sleepy
While I’m over here feeling anything but weepy

Mom is so ready to finally get peace
The messes, the meals, they’re about to just cease

We boated, we swam, we drove and took trips
We’ve milk-shaked, and grilled and ate our body weight in chips

Summer was full of fun, pools, and sun
But now I just need it to really be done

It’s time for some structure, some routine and some math
and for mom to relax in a nice quiet bath

When the alarm strikes tomorrow, the kids they must go
There’s history and science and lessons to know

Of course I will miss all these kids and the happy
I will try not to think about memories and be sappy

Instead I will grin because summer, that’s a wrap
And now I can finally relax and take MY NAP.

So off you go kids, and have a great day
We both need this break, until roughly next May!

Just in Time for New School Year, Teen Choice to Set Hair Trends

You can already hear the high-pitched squeals! Teen Choice Awards are this weekend and we’re sure to see a train of beautiful trend-setting hair for a massive audience of eager young fashion mavens heading back to school.

Here are just a handful of the nominees. I loved their hair styles and can’t wait to see what these and other celebs bring to the red carpets leading into the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Sunday.

If there is one word to describe the “look” we’ve seen recently among the truly young and restless teens it is “variety” — cuts and color all over the place, but with lots of tailored individuality. Lea Michele is a perfect example. Nominated for a Teen Choice Award as a TV comedy actress, this Glee star has been wearing her hair in long layers with caramel highlights and soft bangs that draw attention to her distinctive eyes.

Lucy Hale does a lot of long brown layered wavy hair, and for good reason. She looks fantastic. She’s also done a ponytail with a deep side part and soft, face-framing waves, another great look for her. Incredibly talented Hale is nominated for a Teen Choice Award for her work in Pretty Little Liars as a TV actress in the drama/action adventure category.

Zendaya has done just about everything with her hair, including a layered bob with heavy bangs. Her deep, rich, dark brown color brings out her features beautifully. She’s up for Teen Choice award for TV actress in a comedy for her adorable, heart-throb role in Disney’s KC Undercover.

Can you believe how cool Shailene Woodley looks in a slick-back pixie? She’s nominated for a Teen Choice award for her gripping performance in the blockbuster Insurgent.

Demi Lovato has been wearing a deep side part, giving her hair that great asymmetrical look to frame her beautiful features. She’s been nominated for a Teen Choice female summer music star award. If there is one thing that has been consistent overall it is a trend of soft colors with subtle transitions.

Always, there are exceptions, but even in the new move toward silver hair with vibrant colors, a lot of the transitions are pretty soft and cool, not abrupt. I’m betting, and hoping, we see some color at the Teen Choice Awards Sunday. Maybe a new trend will emerge.

Cheers to the kids! Love change!

Few School Districts Have Anti-Bullying Policies Protecting LGBT Students

A majority of American school districts have no policies protecting LGBT students from bullying, according to a report released Wednesday.

Nearly 30 percent of school districts have no official anti-bullying policy, according to the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, which surveyed more than 13,000 school districts. Of the 70 percent of school districts that do have anti-bullying policies, fewer than half explicitly outline protections for students who get bullied because of their sexual orientation or perceived sexual orientation. Only about 14 percent of districts have protections based on gender identity or expression.

America’s LGBT community has made historic strides in recent weeks. In late June, the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage nationwide, using the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause to support the ruling. In early July, the U.S. Department of Justice sided with a transgender teen suing his school district because it will not let him use the boys restroom.

Still, the report found that many school districts fail to comply with state laws requiring anti-bullying codes, while others go beyond what their states mandate.

The report “illustrates the gap that can emerge between the intentions of a law and the actual implementation –- arguably the most critical component of the passage of any law,” said Eliza Byard, Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network executive director, in a press release. “There remain far too many school districts that have failed to institute policy protections, even in states which require them by law. As a result, these schools continue to fail our students.”

The organization analyzed the anti-bullying policies of every school district from 2008 to 2011.

The map below shows which states are most likely to have school districts with any anti-bullying policy. The graph shows which states have school districts with the most inclusive anti-bullying policies.

Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network’s annual school climate survey, which asks LGBT youth about their experiences in school, shows that “students who believe that their schools have LGBT-inclusive policies experience better school climates,” the report says.

The group’s most recent school climate report from the 2012-2013 school year found that of the 8,000 students surveyed, more than 55 percent reported feeling unsafe at school due to their sexual orientation.

A color guard/pop-music mash-up "doesn't quite fit a category that people can get their heads around," explains David Byrne. Which means it's exactly the kind of thing that would excite the boundary-pushing musician, artist and author. Color guard, which is popular in schools across the United States, consists of teams doing synchronized, explosive dance moves with props like flags, fake rifles and sabers, usually accompanied by marching bands at football games and pep rallies.

This Pet Duck Is Beyond Psyched To See His Human Bestie Come Home From School

Friendship knows no species — just ask these two BFFs.

Jonny and Nibbles are the best of friends. Nibbles is an 11-month-old duck, and Jonny is a 10-year-old human. BuzzFeed recently spoke with Jonny’s mother, Jamie Toschi, who posted a video of her son’s feathered friend eagerly awaiting the arrival of his BFF. In the video, Nibbles sits shotgun in the car while he and Toschi wait for Jonny to get off the school bus. And Nibbles gets totally turnt, quacking up a storm, when he sees his bestie. “I knew he was going to start quaking when he saw Jonny get off the bus,” Toschi told the site.

Nibbles is a Rouen drake who has had a special bond with Jonny since his birth, Toschi wrote on YouTube. Jonny was best friends with Daisy, Nibble’s mom, who died a month after she laid 10 eggs. When the baby chicks hatched, Jonny was the first person Nibbles saw. “Jonny was devastated when Daisy died and he held on to Nibbles and never let go,” Toschi wrote.

This special moment blossomed into a wonderful friendship. Toschi chronicles the growing bond between the boy and his duck on a Facebook page, “The Adventures of Jonny and Nibbles.” There, she describes Nibbles as Jonny’s BFF (BIRD FRIEND FOREVER). The photos show the two friends playing outside, riding in the car, and just chilling and watching TV together at home. You know, best friend stuff.

Nibbles has helped Jonny to come out of his shell.” Toschi told BuzzFeed. ““This duck has definitely made an impact on his life.”

Teacher Jennifer Caswell Guilty Of Sex With Student, Boy’s Father Says School Covered It Up

HOLLIS, Okla. (AP) — A former middle school teacher has pleaded guilty to having sex with a student, and the boy’s father says in a lawsuit that school officials covered up the crimes.

The Oklahoman reported Tuesday ( http://bit.ly/1IapVx8 ) that Jennifer Caswell pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree rape and other charges in Harmon County District Court. Sentencing was set for Aug. 31.

The boy’s father says in a federal lawsuit that local school officials let Caswell resign and keep her teaching credentials. He is seeking $ 1 million for pain, suffering and his son’s mental and emotional anguish. The district denies wrongdoing.

“The district’s overall position is that they acted appropriately once they were aware of an issue,” lawyer Andy Fugitt told the newspaper.

The boy was 15 at the time of the crimes; Caswell is 29. She didn’t respond to requests to comment on the allegations and her lawyer was in court Tuesday and unavailable to comment on her behalf.

The father alleges at least two people saw Caswell engaged in sexual acts with his son in her classroom, when she taught under the name Jennifer Sexton. After she resigned in April 2014, she had sex with the boy in a vehicle, her house and the boy’s father’s house, according to prosecutors. After the woman followed him to Mississippi, where he had been sent to say with his mother, the boy began cooperating with authorities.

The Associated Press does not generally name victims of sexual crimes. It is not identifying the boy’s father to shield the son’s identity.

The lawsuit, filed in April, says the boy’s grades have suffered and he has become withdrawn and quiet.

Caswell appeared on a syndicated talk show last month and said she was “not a rapist.” She pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of second-degree rape, two counts of enticing a child and one count of forcible sodomy.

“I didn’t force anything. I didn’t manipulate. I didn’t take advantage,” she said on the “Dr. Phil” show. Her lawyer told The Oklahoman that she was paid for her appearance.

Caswell has since had her teaching credentials revoked.

Three men relive their carefree college years by killing off as many brain cells as possible in this over-the-top comedy. Old School director Todd Phillips knows more than a bit about the seamy side of fraternity life as director of the infamous unreleased documentary Frat House.

John Waters To Receive Honorary Degree From Rhode Island School Of Design

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — When the Rhode Island School of Design offered iconic filmmaker John Waters an honorary degree, he was surprised. After all, he got thrown out of every school he ever went to.

Known for quirky films that push the boundaries of good taste, including 1972’s outrageous cult classic “Pink Flamingos,” Waters is the keynote speaker at the prestigious art school’s commencement next weekend.

Waters will also receive an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree; recipients are chosen by the RISD community, and nominations are reviewed by a committee of students, faculty and staff.

“I don’t even know if I got a high school diploma. It’s very peculiar. I feel very flattered,” said Waters, who attended New York University briefly in the 1960s before getting kicked out for smoking marijuana on campus. “I feel like the scarecrow in the ‘Wizard of Oz’ when they give him a brain.”

RISD’s 2015 Honorary Degree Committee cited Waters’ body of films as an “enduring inspiration for RISD students seeking to break boundaries, challenge conventions, and define an expressive style,” said RISD President Rosanne Somerson.

“In the words of one nominator, he ’embodies the RISD ‘tude galore’,” Somerson said.

Waters will share a stage with three members of the band Talking Heads — two are RISD alumni — and New Yorker staff writer Adam Gopnik.

Waters has written and directed more than a dozen films over his decades-long career, many of them low-budget movies featuring a cadre of unconventional characters, including drag queen Divine, Waters’ longtime friend and muse. Waters saw mainstream success with 1988’s “Hairspray,” another cult classic that was adapted into a Broadway musical in 2002. He is also a published author and photographer.

“I shouldn’t have been in school. You go to school to figure out what you wanted to do. I knew what I wanted to do,” Waters said. “I wish I had gone to RISD. They would have encouraged my ideas. I could have made ‘Pink Flamingos.'”

Waters does more writing these days than filmmaking: The paperback of his 2014 memoir “Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America” debuts this month. Waters said he was inspired to hitchhike from his native Baltimore to San Francisco because his life is so scheduled and controlled.

“My inspiration has always been the same, which is human behavior I can’t understand, which is always my interest, always has been,” Waters said.

The filmmaker is looking forward to accepting his honorary degree, “Without irony, for one of the few times in my life.”

Under Five Million People School the World

2015-05-23-1432394679-1270948-ireland1.jpg
Click for a Great Irish Slide Show By Karel

A small island nation of under five million people in the North Atlantic just showed a country of 318 million, and a world over seven billion, a thing or two about equality by becoming the first country in the world to legalize same sex marriage via a referendum vote of the people. Yes, Ireland, a country and people I’ve had the pleasure of visiting over a dozen times, by an overwhelming margin voted for marriage equality on May 22, 2015 (Harvey Milk Day in the U.S.A., appropriately enough). They become the 20th country to legalize same sex marriage, but the first to do so by popular vote.

I knew if the people that I have met over the last 20 years showed up at the polls that the measure would win. Never once in Ireland have I experienced homophobia; well, there was one time in Matt Malloy’s pub in the West of Ireland, but the homophobes were from Nashville, TN, not Ireland. And yes, that always surprised me, as much as the Pope may be surprised today; you see, Ireland is a Catholic country — I mean, really Catholic. This is a country that didn’t get divorce until 1992, one that just decriminalized homosexuality in the last three decades and one that just allowed condoms to be purchased over the counter since I’ve been going.

It was a hard felt battle. When I was in Ireland March last, the “Yes” side felt pretty confident. Then the Catholic church poured millions in to the “No” campaign and went the whole family values route. But, the Irish didn’t buy it. At least not the younger ones, even many of the older by the amounts of “Yes” votes received.

I sat worried on May 22 in the U.S.A.. The New York Times ran an editorial stating what a huge step this would be world wide, an accelerant for GLBT rights across the globe. The converse would mean if it went down in flames, it would be a huge blow.

By 2:00 a.m. PST Saturday May 23, 10 a.m. Irish time, it was becoming clear that the “yes” votes would prevail. By 07:00 PST, 15:00 Irish (3:00 p.m.) both sides declared that the “yes” would carry the day with an overwhelming margin. In fact, as of this writing, no district has voted “no” yet.

“What do you say to the Catholic Church that wants a ‘no’ vote from you today,” one presenter asked a middle-aged woman on her way to the polls. “I think they should mind their own business, especially as of late,” she responded, “I’m taking my country in to the next century,” she added as she scurried off.

“You must remember, that compared to Americans, the Irish are screaming left-wing liberals,” presenter George Hook told me in our last interview. “We are a left leaning nation by far, which is often at odds with our religious roots in today’s world,” he went on. “And when we decide this, it will be decided. In other words, we won’t rehash it every year. It will be done, the law of the land,” Hook concluded.

And so it will be.

It’s the season of Gay Pride in America. Long Beach, Calif. just celebrated their Pride festival on May 16 and 17 and Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and many cities in between will continue over the next few months. The festivals were meant to celebrate the spirit of Stonewall, the spirit of oppressed people who had taken enough and stood up for their civil rights.

All over Europe Friday, straights, gays, bis, everyone stood up for GLBT rights and yes, it makes me cry right here, right now. Truly, as one of America’s openly gay media figures for the last three decades, I’ve debated this issue a lot on CNN, MSNBC, in print, in other countries, on BBC, RTE. And I’ve watched homophobia rise, not fall, of late. As singer, Sam Smith, just revealed even he, in the last year, has been hit and called a “faggot” while on tour. It’s still not easy being gay.

Tears. My lesbian niece in Seattle, WA, just texted me, she’s been to Ireland with me before, Uncle Charles, We Won! We Won! and my friend Steven Cabral already this morning, “Karel, we won, it passed; they said yes!”

Joy, happiness, true exuberance, it comes from feeling accepted, from winning long fought battles, from not being discouraged for a change. It’s a shame America can’t do this for all of its people, but Ireland is and that gives the GLBT community around the world hope. Yes, hope that people, including people in our country, their country, wherever they may be, that people can get this issue right. If a Catholic nation can do it, anyone can. And should.

Dublin Castle is alive and electric Saturday, May 23, as people from all around the world gather in anticipation of the final victory’s announcement (it should come at 10:00 PST, 18:00 Irish 6 p.m.) “I’m a gay Irish-Catholic American and I’m here to bear witness to history,” Jay Lassiter told the Irish Times on May 23rd while waiting the final count. And he wasn’t alone. The world was literally waiting.

An award-winning video directed by Karel about Marriage Equality that uses the Jefferson Quote about changing Constitutions

This vote changes the Irish Constitution. That’s right — they changed their document to be inclusive, to grant rights. How Thomas Jefferson of them, the spirit of one of his most famous quotes living and breathing today in Ireland.

“I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and constitutions, but laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind,” Panel Four on the Jefferson Memorial reads in Washington, D.C.

As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times.

We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors.

It appears the Irish agree with Jefferson more than many Americans.

The Irish vote is a huge step for GLBT rights around the globe, and it comes at the time the progress of those rights are celebrated here in the U.S. It’s a lesson that a country can have faith, and believe me, the Irish have faith. This is not a vote saying they are a godless nation. On the contrary, many Irish believe that god and gays are fine with each other, that god is love and understanding and wants families to come together, not be torn apart — all families. It’s a country that struggles with the confines of its faith, but one that puts human rights tantamount to all else. Because they’ve suffered. I mean, they’ve really suffered in that country. Tyrants, plague, famine, Viking invasion — you name it, they’ve had it.

And yet, their hearts remain open to all people.

In 1999, I went to Ireland afraid because of violence in the North and the fact that it hadn’t even been a decade since being gay had been made legal. From the first step, the feeling of welcome was felt then, and over the years, I have always felt like a welcomed visitor in their country. I have brought my partner to meet their President, danced with my late husband in pubs all across the Temple Bar in Dublin, and walked the Moors hand in hand with a man. And never once did anyone say anything to me except “Hello!” or “Welcome.”

A small island nation in the North Atlantic is schooling the world on equal rights. I want every member of the GLBT community, and those allies, to remember Ireland when you are spending vacation dollars. Support this country, these people, who have made such a bold statement to the world, and to their church.

Religion and civil rights can exist side by side; good, god-fearing Catholics can be gay or accept them, and devastation won’t happen when equality is granted.

Thank you to every “yes” campaigner in Ireland. From a 52-year-old gay American, I feel very, very Irish today. As a country and as a people, you have my continued love. As an example to the world today you shine like no other.

Sláinte! What you’ve done is brilliant! I’ll see you in September, and until that time, thanks for giving millions hope around the world in your one, simple vote.

A Gay Dad Sounds Off On The School That Canceled ‘And Then Came Tango’ Play

By Rob Watson | The Next Family

There was a significant hearing this week on Tuesday about same sex relationships and whether to ban them. You likely missed this one because you were focused on that OTHER hearing in front of the Supreme Court, the one on whether all states in the union should perform and recognize same sex marriages.

No, this hearing was smaller, with less attention and could have been held in what might be described as a wholly alternative universe.

This hearing was in front of a school board in Catheys Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was held in a place where same sex marriage legally exists without question.

Unlike the Supreme Court, which was surrounded by folks waving banners of equality, tolerance and the love that creates families, this hearing was full of people who wanted none of that and took offense against anyone who did not look and act like them.

The case before the school board was this: the Sierra Charter Foothill School was scheduled to host a performance of the play, “And Then Came Tango,” based on the true story of two male penguins who hatched and orphaned egg and raised the chick as their own. New York Theater Now describes “Tango” as: “Emily Freeman’s timely play for young audiences, shares the tale of six chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo — and the people who care for them. More specifically and touchingly, Freeman zeroes in on Roy and Silo, two males who form a penguin bond akin to their male-female-paired peers, engaging in mating rituals and trying to hatch a rock. Even more touchingly, Lily, the young Junior Keeper, convinces Walter, the zookeeper in charge of the exhibit, to let Silo and Roy incubate an orphaned egg — which they do to loving fruition.”

The booking of the play had been in place for a year with the Fresno State Theater Troupe. The school regretted having missed out on the previous year’s performance of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” so put in their reservation early to get on the schedule for “Tango.”

Once the play’s synopsis was sent to them, the administration wretched over what they perceived as a “gay theme.” They immediately made attendance voluntary and sent out “warnings” to all their parents. This effort was not enough for many in the community who demanded that the ability to opt out was not enough. They insisted that the school needed to cancel the production all together or they would boycott it for the day.

The force of the vitriolic response shocked the administrators who then threw the decision of the play’s fate to the school board. Meanwhile, some of the students who wanted to see the play began passing out rainbow ribbon bracelets out to those willing to wear them. This “radical” action was also quickly shut down by the administration. The school leaders took on a “road theater” of their own and went into classes to perform skits. Their theme was about how trying to inspire acceptance of others was actually a divisive act. I am not sure what the reviews of the “Divisive Act” skits were, but in any case, they successfully shut down the distribution of rainbow ribbon bracelets and the “perpetrators” apologized.

At the same time the first and second graders were putting the final touches to their creative writing and a story called “Hannah’s Adventure” which was headed to a writing festival in Meced. Hannah was undoubtedly “safe” because she apparently did not have two moms. So, full steam ahead.

Mariposa County life for “And Then Came Tango” was not so fortuitous. The school board voted conclusively to end its run long before it got started.

While the first and second graders of Sierra Charter Foothill wrote their piece, I wrote one of my own. Here is my open letter to the school and the community it serves.

Dear Sierra Charter Foothill School Community,

I was horrified to read of your recent actions around the play called “And Then Came Tango,” which depicted two penguins who loved each other and then saved, hatched and nurtured an orphaned egg. Your principal stated that the play “does cross the line for what parents think is appropriate for school.”

At the school board meeting, parents made comments like “It’s about two men. They raise a baby and I don’t agree with that.” Your community members described the family image in “Tango” as “social engineering” and “promoting” homosexuality. The consensus was “I want to teach my kids what I believe in my home that’s it.”

The family depicted in “And Then Came Tango” is mine.

We are not penguins, and my sons were not hatched, but aside from those set-decorating changes, it is us. My oldest son was born six weeks prematurely to a heroin-addicted mother. My younger son was found abandoned by his drug-addicted mother in a trailer where he had been uncared for two days. My spouse and I had so much love between us that we wanted to extend it further. We adopted these two babies who needed us.

The love I have for my sons is the most profound I have ever known.

That is our story, and it is reflected in the factual story of the penguins in the play. The penguin real life story occurred in 1999 at the Central Park Zoo, and they met with the same intolerant attitude that your community is exhibiting. Homophobic people rose up and demanded that the penguin family be broken apart. They felt what had happened naturally was somehow “sending the wrong message.”

The “Tango” story is about love. My family’s story is about love. We are people, we are not ideas or theories for you to “agree” or “disagree” with. My sons are not experiments nor are they part of some agenda to “promote” a brand of sexuality. I would never disrespect your children by characterizing them as “talking points of heterosexual sex acts” and I expect the common decency from you to not classify my sons similarly.

Just for the record, my family is not alone. There are thousands like us in the state of California. We are your neighbors. Just like the orphaned egg in the story, there are also thousands of kids who have been abused or neglected in our state. A Cambridge study found that there is only one parental profile family that chooses to create a family using foster care/adoption as its first choice — that profile is a two male led household.

My sons are both wonderful boys — bright, charming, caring — and have both been taught to be good citizens in their school community. Even though it is clear that they would not be welcome, your school would be fortunate to have two such as them within it.

All your kids are going to come to school and share with others about how they came to be in their families, LGBT kids do the same. My sons, like other kids from differing family structures, fully grasp the concept of mutual respect between families. It is the principle where we listen to each other and find common ground, not a focus on our differences.

It is a concept that you have just voted down. It is a lesson you have yet to learn.

As for “Tango,” theater arts are meant to illustrate, illuminate and shake their audience from pre-conceived notions and feelings. This play was brought to you not so you can judge and censor it, or the families like mine that it represents, but so you can watch and grow from finding out about us. It asks you to consider that a family is driven more from the hearts of its members than it is from their genitals.

Last year, your school was upset that it missed out on the road tour of a production of the classic “The Velveteen Rabbit.” I wonder if you would have caught the message of that play and how it too affirms the creation of families such as mine. I am sorry you did not see it, as you might have taken a glimpse of what it means to be a “real” family. You would have heard this:

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real…It doesn’t happen all at once…You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

Tango was not seeking your approval, it was a gift for you so that you could start to see things more broadly and appreciate the diversity in this world. It was ready to show you what is truly real, something like my family.

By your actions, you have shut down a great educational opportunity.

That opportunity was not for your kids, it was for you.

DVDs: Film School Or Criterion? You Decide

Every once in a while, a great director or screenwriter will offer up a list of their favorite films. Martin Scorsese just did it, sort of. (Actually, he gave an interview and talked at length or briefly or just referenced 89 films, which was immediately turned into The 89 Films Martin Scorsese Says Every Filmmaker Needs To See!) It’s fun. You see the list, you check off the ones you’ve seen, make a note of the ones you haven’t and scoff at a few you wouldn’t include yourself. (Though of course Marty surely has some insightful reason for every film on the list — like maybe an innovative production design or great camerawork as opposed to, you know, the movie as a movie.)

I actually prefer Scorsese’s list of 39 international films everyone should watch; it seems less haphazard. And Akira Kurosawa had a pretty great list of 100 classics that his daughter made available to the world.

So people display the lists, name the directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Quentin Tarantino and countless others who never went to film school or quit and basically educated themselves on VHS or laser disc or DVD by watching the movies referenced by their favorite directors. As they say, you could do worse…. Mind you, I’m almost certain it would be useful to learn practical stuff like how a camera works and the different lenses and Avid and so on. Actually that’s a good argument for learning everything from craft services to acting if you want to direct (just like every reporter should start in copy or fact checking).

But forget ALL of that. Forget film school. Forget lists by favorite directors. Forget reference books like The 136 Films You Should See Before You Die. If you really want a great and eclectic film education, go to the School Of Criterion. Sure, the benefit of a quirky list by Scorsese is precisely that it’s quirky. Anyone can make a list of 100 movies most people would agree are classics. So you want some personality, some oddballs to give your education spark. Criterion has that: most of their movies are classics. But they also dig into the nooks and crannies of cinema. They champion current directors. They reveal some passion projects. And literally everything released by Criterion is worth a look. (Except for The Rock. That was a mistake, but they could use the money and it became their best-selling release ever, so shame on us. And at least it IS the best movie associated with director Michael Bay.) But it gets better: Criterion releases often get released with commentary tracks, making-of features, brief celebrations of the film by admirers — which is like having a major director come in and share what they love about a film before your class screens it — and more. It’s truly an education about each particular film. Yes, they’ve released hundreds and hundreds of titles by now. So to be clear that we’re not cheating, start with the first one hundred, from Grand Illusion to a compilation of Beastie Boys videos and you’ll see what an awesome education it would be. Then watch the next one hundred. And then the next one hundred after that.

And when you’re ready for your post-graduate level work, dive into the Eclipse series.

SILENT OZU: THREE CRIME DRAMAS ($ 44.95 DVD; Criterion’s Eclipse)

Eclipse is the “no frills” line of releases by Criterion. What they lack in bonus features, they make up for in eclecticism. The prints are always of a solid quality and the range of offbeat, fascinating and downright revelatory movies that are included have me more excited for the latest releases from Eclipse than from Criterion itself. I’m thrilled to get great new BluRay editions of classic films like The Thin Blue Line and recent movies like Moonrise Kingdom. But Eclipse takes me to school in the best sense of the word.

Here are three early films from Yasujiro Ozu, one of the greats. If you’re like me, you know Ozu as a master of quiet, contemplative family dramas. Now his earlier work is getting a better hearing in the West and we’re discovering gems like I Was Born, But… and now three gangster-ish movies. How can you not get excited by That Night’s Wife, a noir all set during one fateful evening; seeing Kinuyo Tanaka of The Life Of Oharu get fiercely jealous over her gangster boyfriend’s new female pal in Dragnet Girl (awesome title!); and watching an everyman forced to commit a brutal crime in Walk Cheerfully? School is in session, the prints look solid and I’ve never been happier to have homework.

2015-04-21-1429598630-8446454-Missing.jpg

THE BABADOOK ($ 29.99 BluRay; Scream! Factory)
THE MISSING ($ 54.99 BluRay; Anchor Bay)

Nothing is scarier than a threat to your child. Two new works — a horror film and a miniseries — explore that terror from different angles. The Babadook is more a work of suspense than a full-on horror film. Don’t look for maniacal blood-letting from this one. The horror starts within as a single mother and her son struggle to make a life for themselves. You keep swinging in your sympathies and your suspicion: first the mother seems like she’s losing it and perhaps mentally unhinged; then the little boy seems disturbed. It kicks into high gear when a mysterious picture book about The Babadook appears on their doorstep. Don’t read it! Indeed, don’t read any creepy picture books that appear mysteriously; it’s just good advice. As the mom, Essie Davis gives a very good performance and the project overall is an impressive calling card for director Jennifer Kent. I look forward to what she does next.

The Missing is very different. It’s a UK miniseries about a family torn apart by the disappearance of their son. A supernatural demon would actually be welcome to them; at least, they could name the terror and fight it. All they have is an absence, an absence that tears apart their family and haunts everyone, including the police involved with the case. A clever structure makes this drama especially compelling. It takes place over eight episodes and this is a genuine miniseries, with a beginning and middle and end.

2015-04-21-1429599229-1432816-CooleyHigh.jpg

COOLEY HIGH ($ 29.95 BluRay; Olive Films)

I don’t think Cooley High is on any of Martin Scorsese’s lists of notable films. but Quentin Tarantino would be smart enough to include it on one of his lists, not to mention rattle off facts about the making of the film or detail the careers various actors went on to have that would enlighten me. Churned out by the exploitation label AIP in 1975, it was clearly an attempt to cash in on the success of American Graffiti by creating an all- black version. Set in Chicago in 1964, Cooley High is episodic and sweet and sad and — though it was probably the last thing on AIP’s mind — a gem. Screenwriter Eric Monte went on to help launch the TV shows Good Times and What’s Happening!! (nominally a spin-off of the film). Director Michael Schulz did Car Wash and Greased Lightning and god help us the Bee Gees movie Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (plus a lot of TV). This is the one they’ll all want to be remembered by.

2015-04-21-1429600042-8062038-Sondheim.jpg

THE STEPHEN SONDHEIM COLLECTION ($ 129.98 DVD; Image)

Every season on Broadway, the highest compliment a new show can get is to be compared to composer Stephen Sondheim’s work. Just check out the reviews for Fun Home! Classics are rethought in his honor as well. The King And I, critics say, is revealed to be complex and a worthy precursor to Sondheim. (Needless to say, Sondheim would extoll the greatness of Rodgers & Hammerstein before anyone else could beat him to it.) Off Broadway, a stripped down and acclaimed new production of Into The Woods just received some end of the season nominations for top awards while the feature film version just became one of the highest grossing musicals in North American history. Gypsy just opened in London starring Imelda Staunton to such raves I’m thinking of selling a kidney so I can fly over and check it out.

In other words, anyone who loves Sondheim can’t get enough of him. So buy them this: it’s a six disc collection of six stage productions filmed for TV, concert productions and a birthday celebration. You get the legendary performances of Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters in Sunday In The Park With George from 1986. You get the recent 2011 edition of Company with Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Colbert. I’ll take the 1990 Into The Woods capturing of that show over the feature film any day. Like most people (that’s the nature of theater), I didn’t get to see Patti Lupone and George tackle Sweeney Todd, so the 2001 concert with the San Francisco Symphony is a treat. (Sometimes, cast albums aren’t enough.) Toss in the all-star performance of Follies from 1985 that may be the show’s ideal version and a tribute to the composer with countless legends, such as Elaine Stritch doing “I’m Still Here” and you’ve got yourself a whole lot of Sondheim. It’s not enough. It never is. But it’s a start.

2015-04-21-1429600807-2064960-JAG.JPG

JAG: THE COMPLETE SERIES ($ 119.99 DVD; CBS TV?Paramount)

The TV drama JAG haunts the dreams of every TV executive. Whenever they pull the plug on a TV show, some little part of them hesitates and wonders with fear if someone else will pick the show up. Will it win Emmys? Will it hang on long enough somewhere else — maybe in first run syndication — to be considered a hit? Will canceling it make them look bad? One has to pity the poor fools at NBC who kicked JAG to the curb. It was a solid performer but decidedly uncool and NBC was still very cool in 1995: it was airing Frasier, NewsRadio, Friends, Seinfeld, ER and Homicide: Life On The Streets. It had Law & Order as a durable programmer and that one at least got good reviews. No one paid attention to JAG. It ranked 79th and NBC cancelled it and CBS picked it up, probably thinking the show might provide some good filler come mid-season when the inevitable holes appeared in its schedule.

So CBS picked it up and the show found a home on Friday night. Critics still ignored it (think Tom Selleck’s Blue Bloods, also a big hit on Friday night now). But it grew and grew and became a massive hit around the world, airing for ten seasons and producing 227 episodes that made everyone a LOT of money. As if that weren’t bad enough, it spun off NCIS, which became the #1 show on primetime and spun off NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans and counting. Dumping JAG was literally one of the biggest and most expensive blunders in TV history. So don’t give this boxed set as a gift to any executives at NBC. It’s the sort of show that doesn’t really need to be seen in order (which is why it was so successful in syndication). But for fans — and JAG has many — this compact, less expensive boxed set is not as fancy as the original collection put out in 2005 but it’s a lot more affordable. And JAG was always a meat and potatoes show anyway.

ANTARCTICA: A YEAR ON ICE ($ 34.95 BluRay; Music Box)
THE RIVER ($ 39.95 BluRay; Criterion)

Sometimes you just want to wallow in beauty and both these films offer that, to say the least. Antarctica is a documentary film about life at the bottom of the world. You’ll like it more if you haven’t already seen director Werner Herzog’s typically quirky project Encounters At The End Of The World, which covers the same territory in a more quixotic, offbeat manner. This one has a fair amount of humor as well, not to mention some stunning images. Similarly, Jean Renoir’s first film after World War II and his awkward time in Hollywood is a visual stunner. It tells a simple tale about life on the river for three young women in India who all fall hard for a handsome soldier now home minus a leg and his self-confidence. Renoir captures an entire world with this gorgeous film, a paean to man and nature that looks particularly stunning on BluRay. Typically, Criterion pulled this print from an excellent 2004 restoration and includes extras like a one hour documentary, comments from Renoir and even comments from Martin Scorsese (again!). I can’t wait for the restored Satyajit Ray Apu trilogy to open up in May. The River is the perfect movie to tide me over until then.

Russian Institute Lesson 20: The New School Girl

As punishment from her father, Alice, an attractive 19 year old student, is sent to the Russian Institute, an extremely ‘selective’ educational establishment where the discipline is particularly tough. Whilst there, Alice meets the principal who, although she is a gorgeous woman with a voluptuous figure highlighted by her black suit, is nevertheless one of the strictest people that she has met throughout her education. Experiencing wet fellatio in the woods, lesbian embraces among friends in the dormitories at night, and anal experiences with the teachers, Alice, the new girl, will eventually manage to carve out her place and realise that, all things considered, life at the Russian Institute is extremely enjoyable…

Gender Fluid Generation: Evolving Gender Norms at School

2015-03-06-1425608182-1918305-IMG_0200.jpg

Originally published on Youthradio.org, the premier source for youth generated news throughout the globe.

By: Nanette Thompson

The first time I learned that gender could be fluid was in sex ed in the 9th grade. I remember the teacher mumbling under her breath that some people don’t identify their gender with the biological sex they were born with. At the time it didn’t phase me because I’d never known anyone who’d talked about it or felt that way. But now, three years later, I have a 16-year-old classmate who’s trans. His name is Jace McDonald.

“That is the name I have chosen,” said Jace. “It’s what my parents would have named me if I was born biologically male.”

Jace McDonald was born female. But says he always knew there was something different about him. He didn’t like so called girl things, and more than that, he felt like a boy. At 13, he started identifying as transgender, and has become something of an activist.

“Never ask someone who’s trans what their real name is,” he said. “That is so offensive. My real name is Jace. And my birth name is none of your business.”

Jace has thick glasses and short brown hair, and he’s outspoken at school. One time in English class when a teacher stumbled over gender terminology, Jace stepped in to clarify and ended up teaching a whole lesson himself. He sometimes finds himself fed up. “High school is hard enough as it is,” he said.” High school as someone who is non-gender conforming just makes it harder. How many times today am I going to be called a girl?”

In many ways, it seems like gender non-conformity awareness is at all-time high. Last week Congressman Mike Honda announced via Twitter that he was the “proud grandpa of a transgender grandchild.” And according to new polling out last month, young people increasingly see gender as not just limited to male and female. But the torchbearers of gender fluidity aren’t just celebrities or politicians, but kids. But schools are still catching up with the needs of gender nonconforming students. Last year, California’s first law protecting gender nonconforming students went into effect. It gives Jace the right to use the bathroom of his choice.

Last month, Jace and I walked down the hall of the high school that we both attend. He stopped and pointed to set of doors that are our main bathrooms on campus. He says when he uses the bathroom between classes that kids occasionally give him strange looks.

“So if I walk in there are there are people already in there, I’m more likely to hold it and just go to my next class,” he said.

It seems rough, but Jace says this is way better than he used to have it. He’s a junior now, and this is his first year at my school. He’s gone to two other high schools and left because he was taunted and called names like tranny. He says, the schools didn’t let him use the boy’s bathroom, and insisted on keeping his birth name on the roster. At my school, he says he finally feels safe.

Third grader Tomás Rocha, 8, in the hallway of his elementary school. Tomás is often asked if he is a boy or a girl. “Sometimes I say, does it really matter?” he says. Photo Credit: Brett Myers/Youth Radio>

Just a few towns away at Malcolm X Elementary School, teachers start addressing gender identity at a young age, with the goal of making school more safe and inclusive. One of the students there, third Grader Tomás Rocha has shoulder length hair and long bangs. He’s wearing a turquoise My Little Pony t-shirt  with black flats. A lot of days he wears dresses, and last year he started using the girls bathroom. Tomás says people regularly ask him if he’s a boy or a girl.

“I just really think i’m really both,” said Tomás. “I really don’t care what people call me . Sometimes I say I’m a girl. Sometimes I say I’m a boy. Sometimes I say does it really matter?”

However, it mattered to his mom Amy. She struggled with Tomás’s gender bending. And at first hoped it was a phase. “His first grade teacher told me that, ‘Yeah I don’t know if this is a phase,'” she said. “And so that scared me because I wanted it to be a phase, because I didn’t want to have to have my child hurt. I wanted him to be what society wants a baby boy to be like when they’re born. You know, tough and want to play sports.

Her concerns came from her fear of Tomás  might get bullied. It’s something Tomás’s teacher Julia Beers also thinks about. Beers was Tomás’ second grade teacher last year — the first year he started wearing dresses to school. When students question Tomás, Beers tries to assume the best — that her students are curious and not trying to be mean. Like when she overhears a student say to Tomás, “Did you know you were wearing a dress to school today?”

“If a student is laughing for example, I might say,  ‘Hmm what are you thinking when you laugh like that?'” she said. “And by opening up that question, it can often help that student kinda dig deeper and realize ‘It just seems weird’ or ‘I feel uncomfortable’ or ‘I’ve just never seen someone do that before.'”

According to the Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network, 82 percent of transgender young people say they don’t feel safe at school.  Struggles, like the ones my high school classmate Jace has been through, are the norm.

For Tomás though, his elementary school’s efforts seem to be working. His mom says his grades and behavior improved after he was given more freedom to be himself.

Mississippi School Board Fights To Block Gay-Straight Alliance From Forming

A Mississippi school board has rewritten the district’s rules on school clubs after a student expressed interest in forming what the superintendent called “gay clubs.”

According to the Clarion-Ledger, a student at Brandon High School in Rankin County approached a teacher about starting a Gay-Straight Alliance chapter, which is aimed at creating safe spaces for students regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. According to the teacher, the student sent the proposal for the new club to school administrators.

On Wednesday, the Rankin County School Board voted to require students to get permission from parents before joining clubs. Officials deny that they knew about the club before making their decision, although superintendent Lynn Weathersby met recently with county administrators and the school board attorney to discuss how to legally “limit organizations like that on campus that we don’t want to endorse and don’t want.”

Brandon High School did not return The Huffington Post’s request for comment.

The school board’s decision was quickly condemned by advocacy groups and civil rights organizations.

“This policy sends a harmful message to LGBT students in Rankin County that they are not welcomed within their classrooms, at school functions or on the bus,” said Mississippi’s Human Rights Campaign director Rob Hill in a statement. “The board’s actions tell LGBT students that they should be ashamed of who they are and that their lives are valued less than their peers.”

“I was greatly disturbed when I heard what was said by the superintendent and his board attorney, because he should know better,” American Civil Liberties Union Legal Director Charles Irvin told WAPT. “What I want to see changed is that you not try to hide behind abstinence only to say that is the rationale for keeping students from being able to assemble.”

Though school board officials stated that the new restrictions apply to all clubs and are not unlawful, Rankin County School Board attorney Freddie Harrell also claimed that a GSA club might violate the state’s abstinence-only education policies. Courts have rebuked school districts that have made similar arguments in attempting to block GSAs from forming, finding that clubs are dedicated to promoting tolerance and raising awareness of prejudice in schools.

According to the ACLU, 15 federal courts have upheld students’ rights to form GSAs under the Equal Access Act, which prevents schools from discriminating against clubs based on the content of the meetings.

Mississippi is one of nine states with restrictive laws that maintain strict goals for teaching students about sexuality and essentially bar teachers from educating students about LGBT issues.
