Kurt Cobain Collection Dropping Today

Kurt Cobain may be gone but he’s not forgotten.
The late Nirvana frontman, who took his own life in 1994, was an artist as well as a singer. Today, The End of Music LLC and Live Nation Merchandise will release the Kurt Was Here collection, which is based entirely on Cobain’s artwork.
This lineup of T-shirts and hoodies feature Cobain’s handwritten journal entries, sketches, paintings and drawings. Each item was curated and designed under the creative direction of Frances Bean Cobain, his 27-year-old daughter with Courtney Love.
The collection will be sold at Barneys New York, Selfridges and online. A percentage of the sales from KurtCobainShop.com will be donated to the Jed Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the emotional health and preventing suicide for teens and young adults.
Short-sleeve T-shirts will retail for $ 113, long-sleeves are $ 138 and a hoodie is $ 188.
A coffee table book and limited-edition fine art prints will be offered later this year. And additional product and retailers are expected to be added next year.

How a Gay Dad Comes out Today – and Every Day

“Titanium metal!” my son exclaimed. “Like a fast robot police sports car!”

“Pink!” my daughter excitedly squealed.

“And what do you think?” I asked my husband, as we were shopping for our new car. “You need to like the color, too.”

A salesperson in the showroom, overhearing our conversation, inquired, “Why does your brother need to like the color of the car you’re buying?”

Since coming out over 20 years ago, I’ve realized that coming out is not a one and done thing.

But now, as a gay dad, with a husband and two kids, coming out happens pretty much on a weekly, if not, daily, basis.

This September, my son started playing hockey, and I’m the assistant coach.

During our coaches meeting, many of the coaches in the room mentioned that we hadn’t received an email, inviting use to fill out one of the forms we were reviewing.

The reply?

“Your wives probably filled it out, without you knowing!”

I don’t intentionally come out every day. Or even purposely call myself a gay dad. No big announcements, no celebratory parties, no viral YouTube videos… well, okay… maybe oneor two

Yet, the reality is, I am a proud gay dad, whose family looks a bit different than the majority of families where we live.

Earlier this year, my husband I and were out walking with our kids, and new neighbors came up to introduce themselves.

After a bit of small talk, they then asked, “So… what’s going on here… Full House? — guys raising kids together?”

“Well, kind of, but in this case, we’re husbands,” we replied.

Them: “Husbands?”

Me: “Husbands.”

Them: “Husbands?”

Me: “Yes… husbands.”

Them: “Oh… you’re a same-sex couple! Honey — we have a same-sex couple on our new street!”

I know not every coming out moment is funny and not every coming out moment garners a positive reaction.

I also know that barriers still exist for so many LGBTQ individuals, and that some people still feel that they have to hide this part of their identity.

Personally, I’m inspired by those who have “come out” before me — who were visible on the first National Coming Out Day, 27 years ago, when it wasn’t easy to be heard.

Twenty years ago, the hardest words to ever come out of my mouth were, “I’m gay” — and unfortunately, the reactions weren’t as positive or as humorous as the reactions I get now.

For so many youth the reactions still aren’t favorable.

In fact, it’s estimated that 25-40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.

It’s one of the reasons why I want to live my life so transparent and so visible.

I know that I don’t have to come out in those every day moments but I do feel a responsibility to be visible and to be out.

I want to be a role model for those who aspire to be out, but don’t think they can.

I want to change perception of what families look like, and inspire those who think that by coming out, they have to give up their dream of being a parent.

I want to help LGBTQ youth so that they feel they can live their authentic lives.

One of the best notes I have ever received about one of my blog posts, was from a mother, whose son was having a hard time coming out. He was afraid of being rejected and he thought that by coming out, he would have to give up his dream of being a dad. After reading my post, her son had the courage to come out and to live his authentic life. This woman’s letter was so heartfelt, and showed me how important it is to be visible — because you never know who is going to be helped by your story.

I recognize how fortunate I am. I can be a dad to two incredible kids, a husband, a professional in business world, an assistant hockey coach, a blogger — and an out, gay man.

No one bats an eye or treats me differently when they find out that, no, I actually don’t have a wife. That tall, handsome, man I live with, he’s my husband and papa to our kids — and I love him dearly.

Oh… and the choice of color we selected for the car?

While there was a part of me who really wanted to choose pink… driving a fast robot police sports car is cool, too. Plus, it looks pretty awesome parked in our driveway beside the even cooler mini-van.

How A 6-Year-Old Viewed Her Parents’ Divorce — And How It Affects Her Today

Maegan Ellicott was about six when her parents divorced. She can barely recall a time when they were married and her family was all under one roof. What she does remember is how hard her mom and dad tried to put the needs of their daughters first after the separation.

“It wasn’t perfect and it was still a very difficult experience for me and my family but I know how lucky my older sister and I were to have parents that handled divorce the way they did,” Elicott, 29, told The Huffington Post recently. 

Below, the Alaska resident shares how her parents were able to keep the peace — and how the split affected her views on marriage and long-term relationships. 

Breaking The News:

“I actually don’t recall how they broke the news; I don’t remember them discussing it with me and my sister or my Dad moving out. I do remember my Dad finding an apartment about a mile from the house we grew up in. I’m not sure if my lack of memories of this time period is because of my young age or because I simply don’t want to remember. My sister was 12 when they divorced and has told me they sat us down in the living room and discussed it with us very calmly.”

The Custody Arrangement:

“My parents had a fairly odd custody arrangement — they really tried to keep it 50/50. I spent Monday night to Wednesday morning at my Dad’s house. On Wednesday afternoon I went home from school with my Mom until Friday morning. I swapped houses every other weekend. Of course changing houses mid-school week meant I left a lot of things at houses — this brought my parents into a lot of contact. They also traded most holidays. The only thing set in stone was my Dad had Christmas Eve and my Mom had Christmas morning. And they both were sure to attend my birthday parties.”

The First Few Years:

“The constant moving back and forth was very confusing for many of my friends (especially because this was before smart phones and quick contact!) but I really don’t remember having problems with it. Kids are very adaptable. I remember having friends and later step-sisters (when my dad remarried) that only stayed every other weekend with their dads. I felt bad that they spent so little time with them. My parents worked hard to have a good relationship; I am sure it was incredibly difficult and painful for both of them but I have no memory of them fighting ever. My parents never complained about the other to me and I am so appreciative of that today.

 My Dad remarried when I was 10  and my Mom did the same when I was 13. Each time I gained two step-siblings. I think the fact that I was so young when they came into my family allowed me to really bond with them and grow up with them. I appreciate how fluid and flexible my family is and how distinctions based on birth parents were never important.”

 The Impact:

“I’ve realized that some of my views on relationships were definitely influenced by my parents’ divorce. I don’t value marriage at all. I have no desire to marry and do not see it as something to aspire to. I don’t think I ever dreamed of my wedding day like they say little girls do. This is not to say I don’t think you can be in a committed relationship but I don’t find marriage any more special than a committed relationship. It could all be because of the divorce or it could just be me. I guess I just don’t see it as necessarily permanent. I know it can be — my grandparents have been married 60+ years and are still very happy.  I just don’t desire it for myself. If someday I meet a person to whom marriage is really important I would consider it but I would prefer to just elope or go to a courthouse if that happened.” 

Her Relationship With Her Parents Today:

“Both my parents have been in their second marriages for approximately 20 years now and I am so lucky to have such a wonderful large family that gets along. All my major life events have been celebrated with both sides of my family present. When I graduated from my Master’s program, my Dad, stepmom and Mom all flew from California to Alaska for my graduation. We then traveled around Alaska for about a week together. For me it was normal, but I realize that many people can’t imagine a man traveling with his current and ex-wife without there being tension.

I’m visiting my family in a few months and today I woke up to an email from my stepmother telling everyone in the family when I would be home and that they would be hosting a family night while I’m there — included in the email was my Mom and her wife. Things like that mean the world to me.”

The Takeaway:

“Going from house to house was normal for me but my parents were also smart enough to get me in counseling very early and to continue it as needed throughout my childhood. It was so helpful. If you’re a parent reading this, know that while kids are very adaptable, it’s a good idea to find a child psychologist to talk to your children. It will help them work through all the changes in their lives.”

News: Single Woman With 3 Young Children Unaware She Subject Of 984 Judgments Today

LINCOLN, NE—Oblivious to the thoughts and looks directed toward her as she shopped for groceries, stopped by the post office, and ran several other errands with her three young children, single mother Karen Nichols, 29, was reportedly completely unaware that she was the focus of 984 separate judgments by strangers this afternoon.

According to reports, during the five hours in which Nichols was accompanied by her kids, Erik, Sadie, and James—aged 1, 2, and 4, respectively—to a variety of locations throughout the city, she was the subject of nearly a thousand negative assumptions about her financial situation, relative parenting capabilities, and general promiscuity.

“My God—that is just so sad,” thought 45-year-old local resident Rebecca Mueller, just one of 16 people in the local Stop and Shop parking lot who leveled a total of 29 judgments at Nichols as she struggled to secure her crying youngest child …

This Makeup Artist’s Monster Transformations Are The Scariest Things You’ll See Today

Special effects and makeup artist Emily Anderson’s Instagram page is one you won’t be able to unsee. But we’re not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.

The 23-year-old’s account is filled with hauntingly awesome makeup transformations turning Anderson into monsters, gremlins and villains. Armed with lots of water-based paints, highly-pigmented shadow palettes and patience, she’s morphed her upper body into three-dimensional versions of Doomsday, Medusa and Gizmo.

Anderson honed her makeup artistry skills at the Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles and on the sets of film, TV shows and music videos, including “Lizzie Borden’s Revenge,” “American Horror Story” and David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s “Hey Mama.”

She began dabbling with monster transformations back in 2014, and picked it up again in March. “I was inspired originally by body paint that pro wrestler Finn Balor had worn actually,” she told The Huffington Post. “I ended up having the chance to do his body paint for a match in San Jose for Wrestle Mania Weekend.”

To help seamlessly blend the makeup out into the crevices and folds of her skin, Anderson uses a total of four makeup brushes and sometimes the BeautyBlender. For more heavy duty long-wear makeup looks, she reaches for airbrush paints.

All of Anderson’s monster transformations seem incredibly complex to achieve. “The raptor was pretty complicated because of the angles involved, but some of the Disney scenes or Gizmo took more detail,” she said. “I try to challenge myself each time so they are all a little difficult or complicated for me to work out in some way!”

When it’s time to take it all off, she swears by soap and water for the water-based paints, 99-percent alcohol to remove the airbrush and alcohol colors, and Neutrogena makeup remover wipes for anything that’s left over.

Directed by Megaforce, the short horror film depicts Rihanna and her posse acting out a wild revenge plot on the wife of RiRi’s accountant who ran off with her money. Watch carefully and you’ll notice the video is replete with references to cult films such as Oldboy (that Goyard trunk in the first shot is just as haunting), Carrie, and even Weekend at Bernie’s. Needless to say, the video is NSFW because, really, would Bad Gal RiRi have it any other way?

June 26th, 2015: Gay marriage ended — suddenly, in a 5-4 Supreme Court ruling, it became just marriage.

I remember arguing so publicly 11 years ago on CNN and every other news network. Let’s revisit those arguments.



And now, it’s law, and nothing that man from Concerned Women was worried about is happening, will happen, has happened. Just the opposite. For most people in America, nothing really changed as each state legalized, and the patchwork of marriage began.

And now, that fight is over for good.

I remember its real beginnings. AIDS. I was there during the 1980s when a president wouldn’t mention the word, and a world turned its back on the sick. I remember ambulances not taking patients, doctors not touching people, nurses turning away and ultimately, funeral homes refusing bodies. In the 20th century, no less.

And I remember families shutting out loved ones. Couples that had been together 20 years — one would get sick and the other was locked out of the hospital room, and ultimately locked out of their own house by family who had claims. You see, no marriage, no claims to property, to visitation — nothing. Suddenly, when one got sick, the other lost their life and often their belongings. And it was legal.

The only way to rectify that was marriage, period, end of story. And the fight began.

Now, in the age of barebacking and PrEP therapies, younger gay men don’t remember the root of the struggle, how it came to a head, finally, in the 1980s with the advent of that terrible disease that still had no cure and no really effective, safe, long-term treatment.

We owe this day, those on the side of marriage equality, to the Republicans in more ways than one. First, there is the beautifully drafted 14th Amendment to the Constitution; one written at time of reconstruction, after slavery. It states:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

In other words, equal equals equal, and since marriage is contract law, you can’t discriminate based on gender, sexual orientation, race, or any other reason. Period.

Five of the justices got that. The other four, not so much, but like dinosaurs, they are falling in the tar pit of the wrong side of history, screaming and flailing about as they go. But going they are.

In one week the court has said yes, you can keep your health care America. Then the people said that a 150 year old flag was, in fact, bigotry and hatred. And now, the court again has said that gay people can marry in all 50 states. Not a bad week for Americans.

Reaction all day has been tears, hugs from strangers, congratulatory remarks. Finally.

I will save the nay-saying about gays in other countries and the atrocities that still exists. I will spare the fact that ENDA, which guarantees I can’t be fired for being gay, still isn’t the law of all 50 states.

Because today it wasn’t #LoveWins. Today #WeAllWon because that fabulous document and that great amendment did its job.

Justice Kennedy, bless you. May joy find you and may your family be blessed. Because today, you created so many families in one fell stroke.

To all of you out there that have fought, straight, gay, whatever, I love you. Thank you. Today you didn’t slap us down or make us feel second class. Today, we are Americans, one and all.

Access to Care Is a Way to Save Transgender Youth’s Lives Today

So far this year, the transgender community has seen a mind-boggling amount of violence and loss.

Whether it is Penny Proud in New Orleans, Louisiana, or Bri Golec in Akron, Ohio, in each case the circumstances are eerily similar: Trans women losing their lives unnecessarily as victims of brutal, violent crimes. Other high profile cases of suicides among transgender individuals, or cases of discrimination suffered by transgender people in either housing or the workplace have captured the nation’s attention by sharing the challenges that transgender people face by being marginalized, othered, harassed, hurt and misunderstood. Collectively these cases have created a rise in social media posts with a poignant and all-too-familiar hash tag, #translivesmatter.

Among all of this loss, it is the Leelah Alcorn case, and others like hers, that I cannot seem to shake from my head as a pediatrician. You may recall that Leelah was the 17-year-old transgender woman who chose to, or was driven to, end her own life. At the time, the case garnered national headlines with the main focus on Leelah’s public social media posts in the weeks preceding her death. These haunting posts discussed her negative experiences with conversion therapy to supposedly “cure” her of her transgender identity.

However, the undiscussed aspect of the Leelah Alcorn case is that access to healthcare, particularly for gender-affirming medical therapies may have saved her life.

Re-read some of her social media posts before she took her life, “I can’t wait until I am 18 to begin transitioning,” and “I can’t wait one more day.” These posts point to her inability to access appropriate healthcare as a potential immediate precipitating factor in her death; one that may have been 100 percent preventable.

I suspect this aspect of the story was not pursued with vigor out of respect to Leelah’s grieving parents, who the media chose to, understandably, not challenge with respect to the rationale behind the decisions they may have made or not made for their child. And it certainly is not my intention to unnecessarily stir the pot, create drama or inflict more pain for on the Alcorn family.

However, there is a larger educational point that needs to be said loud and clear for the benefit of other families and for transgender or gender nonconforming youth. That message is simple: For transgender youth, access to health care services saves lives.

Truth is that in many centers, including the Gender and Sex Development Program that I co-direct at Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, adolescents like Leelah shouldn’t have to wait until the age of 18 to begin engaging in gender-affirming care. Youth should and do have the opportunity to begin the process of transitioning in a way that allows them to live life as their authentic self.

Our Gender Program’s multidisciplinary team and other programs models across the country are complete with pediatricians, nurses, child development specialists, mental health providers and endocrinologists all committed to working with youth and families who are seeking advice or guidance in confronting the challenges of raising a gender non-conforming or transgender child. In many instances these individuals are not familiar with sources of support in the community or options related to medical therapies and interventions.

The Endocrine Society and World Professional Association of Transgender Health Professionals (WPATH) have what are now considered widely-used clinical care guidelines that support the use of pubertal blocking medications in certain gender non-conforming children or early adolescents based upon pubertal and developmental age. They also support the initiation of cross sex hormones in transgender young people as young as 16 years of age (and in some case and some centers even younger).

It is not unusual for teams such as ours to encounter parents or families of children that do not initially support these medical interventions — often due to a denial about the child’s authentic gender identity, a lack of education about the safety of potential medical interventions or a deeply rooted personal, religious or cultural objection. In the overwhelming majority of these cases (but certainly not all), we can work effectively with families and individuals to find a common path moving forward, or at the very least finding a path that ensures the safety and well-being of the child or adolescent.

Centers like ours strive to dispel myths that label being transgender as an affectation or pathology as opposed to the stable identity it represents for most individuals. We also work with families to see their children through a broader and more realistic lens than the spectrum of dysfunction that is too often the focus of negative media attention.

For, while it remains true that too many transgender youth are the victims of hate crimes, and too many become homeless or contemplate suicide, this spectrum of dysfunction does not capture the strength, perseverance, pride and resilience that in my professional opinion more accurately captures the spirit of the young transgender people I see each and every day.

Alongside educating families, it is important to educate the adolescents themselves about their individual rights with regard to medical decision-making particularly as it relates to mature minor statutes on the state level or legal emancipation as a last resort for those who may be at the point of crisis or self-harm.

In essence, for many individuals like Leelah, access to one of the many centers across the country that care for gender non-conforming children or adolescents could literally be a lifeline to a future as their authentic selves.

And most importantly, access to care at these sites can save lives starting today.

3. Rainbow’s End at Marco de Vincenzo: Marco de Vincenzo’s fall 2015 show took place in the Teatro Franco Parenti, with a glass-fronted set (all the better to build the anticipation!) created by the artist Patrizio Travagli, and it felt both uber-hip and entirely perfect for his latest buzzy offering: from sleek, slinky lurex looks in rainbow tones looks to imminently covetable footwear (chunky boots came with thickly braided heels, bicolored heel versions called to mind the uber-chic equestrian and strappy stiletto sandals with that same braided velvet; a good night out).

4. The Margot Tenenbaum movement picks up steam: From Alessandro Michele’s beret-clad Gucci girls to Veronica Etro’s mink intarsia wrappers, it’s been a full-on Milanese lovefest for the Wes Anderson–created Margot Tenenbaum. Bally had its own take on the Gwyneth Paltrow character, imagined at its presentation as sporting an electric purple moto jacket. (And can’t you just see it?)

Proenza Schouler’s Abstract Black Eyeliner and Sporty Headbands: The Beauty Look We Loved Today

The Proenza Schouler woman has always been pretty particular about her beauty routine.  She knows what she likes: namely, clean skin, no frills, and the undone downtown hair to match. For fall, however, designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez took their girl on a day trip to the museum—The Whitney, to be exact, which showed its last uptown exhibition in October in anticipation of its move to the Meatpacking district in Lower Manhattan this spring. Back home again, and feeling inspired by a spin through its abstract expressionist works, she dipped into a bold new makeup palette: “They’re still the [Proenza] girls,” backstage pro Diane Kendal said, referencing the look of models like Liya Kibede and Binx Walton, who boasted the same clean skin and muted lips of years past. But this season, Kendal was adding a surprising element to the face in the form of a painterly swipe of MAC Chromacake in Black, which she applied with her ring finger in a single smudge from the inner corners outward along the lid.

“I’m just dipping my finger in water first,” Kendal continued of the obsidian watercolor effect, which she was perfecting herself on each individual model. “[Jack and Lazaro] wanted to push the look a little this season,” she explained of the directive from McCollough and Hernandez, which also made its way to hairstylist Anthony Turner. “I’m using a lot of product,” Turner laughed of the layers of Bumble & Bumble Prep, Thickening Hairspray, Surf Spray, and CitySwept Finish Spray to create a “kind of punk, very matte, and very anarchic” texture. Just before they took the runway, he made use of another kind of wide black line altogether by positioning a thick fabric headband low across the forehead. Perfect for urban girls about to embark on an afternoon of gallery hopping—or a late night of clubbing.

3 Surprising Facts About Family Today

The world and our lives are changing at speeds never before experienced. The family, like everything else, has been doing its own kind of changing.

There are three facts about today’s family that many of you may not know about.

1. The traditional Mom and Dad in the house raising the kids no longer
represent the majority of families in the U.S. As of 2014, the majority of families are made up of stepfamilies, singles and families living together outside of marriage.

2. Two out of three people have a step-relative. The Pew Research Center determined in 2014, 40 percent of married couples with children are stepcouples. In comparison, only 13 percent of families in 1960 were stepfamilies.

3. The divorce rate among remarriages that involve children is high: 62-74 percent .

Surprising, right?

You wouldn’t know about this new shift in the family by watching mainstream TV and movies. The nuclear family is often presented as the norm although that’s changing with shows like, “Modern Family.” Yet, even in this show, the stepfather (Jay Pritchett) doesn’t have to worry about walking on his stepson’s father’s toes because the father lives out of the country.

Gloria is happily accepted by her new husband’s adult children and doesn’t have the challenges most stepmothers have. Today’s modern stepfamily usually paints a much more complex picture. Biological parents who are both very involved and often clash about parenting styles, stepparents who try to parent reluctant kids and kids who are going back and forth between two homes, trying to figure the whole thing out. The list is endless.

Unfortunately, many family therapists treat second families like first families. Given the biological differences in combined families and all the moving parts that don’t exist in first families, this is a colossal mistake.

Longitudinal studies that focus on stepfamilies are pathetically sparse but we know enough to say that children almost always naturally feel more loyal to their biological parents.

As a therapist who specializes in working with stepfamilies (whether the adults are married, living together or dating) I’ve witnessed the many painful complications these families experience. Simply put, it’s not easy to be in a stepfamily. Whether you’re the kid that has to go back and forth between two homes, the parents who have to split their parenting time 50/50, or the stepparent who comes in to a ready-made system.

The jury is still out about how this new shift in family composition will ultimately impact the culture. One thing we know for sure is that just because a family becomes instant, an instant family it does not make.

“Blended” family myths, stepparents who parent before making solid relationships with their stepkids (which more often than not takes years), poor boundaries between exes, too much contact with exes, not giving the kids enough time to adjust to the new family, stepparents, especially stepmoms, who are treated like yesterday’s news…all conspire to make these families very difficult to be a part of.

Friends and family don’t help. One complaint from a stepparent, a complaint that would be normal and natural coming from the mouth of a biological parent, is met with, “You knew it was a package deal.” In order words, put up or shut up. In other words, not helpful.

Education and support for all stepfamily members is key, not only for these combined families, but society as well.

The Glass Can Be Half Full

Stepfamilies don’t need to be doomed before the bride and groom say, “I do.” There are many ways to work towards having a healthy remarriage and combined family. Here are just a few tips to get started:

1. All members of the new stepfamily need to be given time to adjust to new people and new dynamics. This often takes 4-6 years. The Brady Bunch was a TV show, not a model for stepfamilies.

2. Get rid of the term” blended” families. What does that even mean? It creates an unrealistic expectation and using the term “stepfamily” works just fine.

3. Stepparents, especially stepmoms, need to stop being demonized and minimized. The new couple should operate as a team with the biological parent being the disciplinarian when possible.

4. Parents need to find partners who support rather than compete with their relationships with their children.

5. Children need to be prioritized appropriately and with patience, when it comes to accepting the new members of their family, especially their new stepparent.

The nature of life is change and we don’t need to be afraid of this new face of the American family. We just need to know how to adjust and adapt to the diversity, different households and family units that currently make up contemporary family life.
